- The WWF / WWE Intercontinental Championship was introduced with a South American Tournament... That Never Happened. However What If it did? Join Me for some Fantasy Booking as I travel back to the 1979 to book a 16 Man Tournament for the I.C. Strap and showcase What Could Have Been. It's That 70's Episode on Dave Knows Wrestling.
I want to add Iron Sheik , Larry Zbyzsko , Harley Race , Terry Funk , Dusty Rhodes , Ric Flair and Jack Brisco
"Dusty sucks eggs". Best shirt ever. Wait.. "I broke Wahoo's leg" is pretty rad too
Good one.. and yeah Greg Valentine's shirt is the better one for me too
The Tiger Mask gimmick didn't start until 80 or 81. He could be replaced with Seiji Sakaguchi.
New subscriber...it's so nice to see a wrestling RUclipsr who knows his history (and speaks more than passable English). I'd love to see more on the territories...I started watching MidSouth when I was around 8 years old (before your time, I know)...the few DVDs they've put out bring back great memories, but since Vince doesn't own their library, there's not a lot out there. Dibiase was HUGE in MidSouth, when he was quite young...
I've always like young Dibiase and I think he doesn't get enough credit... in case I didn't make it clear enough in this video. Thank you so much for the kind, supportive words. It's always nice to be appreciated. I'm very glad to see a subscriber who knows their history and leaves such nice comments. Welcome Aboard!
Dr. Jeff Kersh Mid South Wrestling & Ted Dibiase were Great! Do you have the WWE Network? There is So Much Classic stuff on there from the Glory days including a whole bunch of Great Original Mid South shows...Complete Episodes! You will Love it!! 😎 I thought Vince did buy the Library rights?
Remember when Ted D & Hacksaw Jim Doogan were a Team?? It used to Drive me Crazy when the commentators in Mid South pronounced his "Doogan" instead of Dugan! It's like how Jericho Mispronounced everyone's names except Y2J did it on purpose & it was Funny!! "Now challenging for the Title, HOOK SAW JOOM DOOGAN" 😁🙋🙅[
@@DaveKnowsWrestling I started getting into wrestling like watching WWE matches and oldschool TNA stuff around 2008 but started watching Impact! & WWE RAW and SmackDown around late 2011, but I love to go back and look at old wrestling matches from attitude era ruthless agression era, and sometimes 80s wrestling. I love old school TNA! It would be awesome if you could do a video on old school TNA. It would make my day. Not like NWA-TNA old. But like stuff with like old school AJ styles, old school Jeff Hardy, Abyss, Main Event Mafia, Aces and Eights, Curry Man, Shark Boy, Black Machismo, Suicide {eventually being called Manic). That era of old TNA I'd like to say I started watching WWE And TNA around the time of LATE (keyword LATE) WWE ruthless agression era (like when WWE was transitioning out of the R.A. Era but not fully PG era either.) But that's mainly because of when I used to watch RUclips videos about wrestling and like matches from that time, I felt like I was there for the moments of the era but I really started watching WWE in like late 2011 and got in to "WATCHTING" TNA (like actually tuning in to Impact! Every week) in like late 2012 maybe some time in 2013. I do have a huge love for TNA especially old school TNA when it was hardcore and was a viable competitor to WWE and not the shity Indie fed on a TV network no one's heard of using recently released WWE talent that NJPW couldn't turn into Gold for us Smarks. Old TNA had WWW guys coming in and out all the time but they actually had good runs then and it was guys that had there biggest name in WWE but we're established out of WWE and most old WWE+TNA guys did between in TNA like AJ styles, Jeff Hardy (If you compare Jeff Hardy in TNA to Jeff hardy after his most recent return), Bobby Roode, Austin Aries. Like Cristian and AJ styles are the two best examples. Now TNA just takes the Recently released WWE guys and does nothing while not establishing any original stars either. Back in the day TNA had original stars that could compare to WWEs top talent. Abyss for example was like early silent and masked Kane and Cactus Jack at his most hardcore rolled into one. Or Bad influence. A great tag team that got Kaz and Christopher Daniels to have fan established popularity. Aces and Eights and Main Event Mafia. Some great mega stables that weren't built up just to be shot down out of nowhere like the WWE did with the Nexus angle. Samoa Joe did WAAAAYYY better in TNA & ROH. He was a monster heel and an athletic spot monkey rolled into one. WWE needs a version of an X division. It would make smaller gusts easier to build up and give more athletic big guys a way to showcase a rare but beautiful mix of big man look with a cruiserweight wrestling style.
I was there in Rio when Patterson won it was the greatest tournament of all time.
And I thought Vincent Vega only went to Amsterdam

Your videos are awesome;,very enjoyable
Thank you
yes, by all means - a 32-man tournament would be absolutely amazing
Try 64.
Didn’t Pro Wrestling Illustrated do something along these lines? I seem to recall a kayfabe article with photos showing several wrestlers, including Pat Patterson of course, facing off in a “Brazil” arena. But it had completed brackets and everything. It may have been an 8 man tournament. Now for the life of me I can’t recall who the other participants were.
Very good insightful historical amazing funny entertaining smart timeless great title with great wrestlers video
I'm glad you think so highly of this, thank you
My pick is mil mascaras after defeated tiger mask in the final.
Viva mexio!!
That would be really good to see
As a kid, this was my favorite belt. Shame to see them turn it into what it is now. Loved when Ultimate Warrior had one with the white leather and then changed it to the yellow leather. It was so cool.
Love it! Would like to see more tournaments! This is how I think it would go
Patterson beat Tiger Mask
Dynamite beat Furnami
Parisi beat Portier
Garea beat Apollo
Mascaras over Putski
Andre over Volkoff
Fuji over Brito
Inoki over DiBiase
Patterson over Dynamite
Garea over Parisi
Andre over Mascaras
Inoki over Fuji
Patterson over Garea
Inoki over Andre
Inoki over Patterson
We ain't no jive turkeys might be the best thing I heard all month
well the fact that Andre had a 15 year straight undefeated streak hands down it would be Andre
The 15 year winning streak wasn't a thing until they decided to make it up for WM3. So that wouldn't effect this, but good reference
I’m pretty sure Andre was undefeated in a WWF ring. Far as I know, all his pinfall or submission losses came when he was on tour. Since this tournament is by definition a WWF ring, Andre would have to lose by count out or DQ.
Oh man this is great ! Im a fan of all this old stuff. Loved the NWA video. Think You can do one of the origin of WWWF?
I did briefly touch on it... ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=7yHRKW61svg
Did you see this video? As mentioned in it, I do have plans for more. Always glad to know what is in demand
Dave is channeling Kiryu in this video
Knowing that Mil Máscaras would have been awarded a world title he would be my favorite to win it all
Yeah man, nice pick... but Dibiase was also slated to be a world champion too
I would nut
I'm not going to lie when you said Dynamite Kid I wanted him to win I wanted Dynamite Kid to win the Intercontinental Champion I think that would be amazing.
I do feel he is an odds on favorite.. as he should be
I love how exept for a couple of guys
Pat is easily the weakest wrestler here
Lol not in a million years
Dave.... I would have added Sgt. Slaughter to the mix.
Haha, THIS VIDEO TOTALLY REEKS OF AWESOMENESS!!!!! You Have Surely Become My Favorite RUclipsr!!!
Thank you so much! Thank is always welcomed high praise!
Dave is DOPE👊
Since Patterson becomes IC Champion after taking Dibiase NA Title, a Patterson-Dibiase Final would have made sense. Dont get me wrong your bracket here looks good.
That's kind of what I had in mind for the finals myself
A little off topic, but what would you think of an Elimination Chamber Match for the Intercontinental title where each of the 6 participants was from a different continent, especially if it was for a vacant Intercontinental title?
6 Superstars. 6 Continents. 1 Champion.
It's a good idea for now. But back then it was def not fitting of the times
And the guy from north America would win 9 times out of 10
I’m going with Pat. He won the fake one so he’d be booked to win anyway
A purest
I'd replace Tiger Mask and Andre The Giant with The Great Hussein Arab (The Iron Sheik) and Larry Zbyzsko. In addition, I'd have Pat Patterson drop the North American Championship to Bob Backlund to unify it with the World Heavyweight title. Therefore phasing out the North American title to make room for the IC belt.
Very interesting. As I said, there is definitely enough to make a 32 man tournament on this. Those two were definitely in consideration. But what's your beef with the IC belt?
Dave Knows Wrestling No beef whatsoever. I guess there was a bit of a misunderstanding. Instead of unifying the NA title with the fictitious SA title, phase it out in a title vs title match against Backlund's WWF Championship belt. Just introduce the IC belt in a tournament at the Madison Square Garden. Btw,keep up the good work. Love the video
Cool. Thanks Man
Eric Da Bronze the masked superstar was snubbed I'm offended and no nick botwinkle?
If Mil Mascaras wasn't booked to win it all he def wouldn't have participated...same thing goes for Inoki.
P.S. Mil Mascaras is no El Santo.
Andre or Dibiase, I can't decide which!
Very tough call
Pat patterson is prolly my favorite legend
Clutch answer... I think he doesn't get nearly enough credit... he also invented the Royal Rumble
No way in hell Pat Patterson would win this tournament lol
The odds are tough in this
Andre for sure, he's unstoppable
Another vote for Andre
I realize this is fantasy and all, but Andre would never be used in a tournament like this.
The things one could get away with before the internet...
Seriously... can't hide that anymore
Well to be fair some people would fold their arms and say "whatever"
But yeah no one would full on belive it
Andre vs Fujinami in the finals. Andre wins in a babyface vs babyface match and they shake hands after the match.
I wouldn't mind seeing that as the ending
Will you do a vid on Memphis
I will say Memphis does deserve a video all unto itself
Dave Knows Wrestling yeah there's such a great history there from the Kauffman angle to the first appearance of heel vince and everything in between
Would have loved to see Rocky Johnson, Bad News Allen, Ernie Ladd or some kind of representation but it is actually factual I don't think WWE started letting blacks hold the Intercontinental title until the mid 90's so ................
I believe Antonio Inoki
would win
Nice answer
@@DaveKnowsWrestling *THX* and nice video

Which one was your favorite?
Shouldn't an Intercontinental tournament involve the champions of all of the continents?
Be pretty hard to find that Antarctic champion
Dynamite Kid would be my choice
Great pick
Andre the Giant or Brunno Sanmartinno
Mil mascaras
Andre the Giant hands down.
Hard to beat Andre, no matter who you are. Thanks for the vote
I would actually say Tatsumi Fujinami vs Mr. Fuji and Fujinami win
A pretty good finals right there
Fuji is the dirtiest guy here so he would use his good wrestling skill and tricks to get that far
Fujinami would rely on pure skill to beat dynamite kid and tiger mask
Now the fight against fuji would have fuji trying his dirty tricks
Early one but fujinami
Would spot every one
Forcing fuji to confront him head on
And fujinami would easily outwrestle fuji
Anyway thats not my pick but that is what i think would happen
Andre would of won hands down
Andre would have won had there actually been a tournament and he was put in it I doubt he would have been put in it though since he was an attraction but that is here nor there I never understood why they never had that tournament Tournaments aren't any more expensive then other shows,it could have made a whole heck of a lot of money Just get rid of that Brazil foolishness and have it here or in Canada if they absolutely have it out of the US.
First, I do wish they had the tournament and I do love tournaments... however, sadly, there are logical reasons why they don't do them often, especially back in the day. With a tournament, you have only a handful of wrestlers working multiple times in the same night. This keeps other wrestlers off the show who want to work and get paid while other wrestlers work several matches just for one show. If you spread it out over several nights, the sales for different shows can fluctuate and before National TV and the internet, people lose track of what happened in prior rounds. It all comes down to money and while I want tournaments anyway, I do understand the reasoning.
I always felt they did things that wasted money in wrestling Like traveling for RAW and Smackdown They could have both shows in one place like the old RAWs in New York and there are too many house shows All that time WCW was kicking their ass what did they have like 4-5 house shows a month? For those other reasons I get but a tournament wouldn't exactly break anyone's wallet.
I am a sucker for locations being synonymous with a show, but the math shows that traveling and diversifying audiences makes for higher profit. Again I am not a money being the "end all be all" kind of guy. That's just how they see it. I do agree with you on House Shows though. Audience figures are dropping for House Shows and it just makes them wrestle way too much, adding to injury probability which leads to less drawing power for future shows
I guess I'm just stuck in the 80s Jim Crockett having the hour show on Sunday 2 hours Saturday Night show 3 ppvs a year and 90% of their business being between Baltimore and Philadelphia lol They did compete with Vince for 3-4 years though that format lol
I’d have Ted Dibiase win. However, I’d swap out André the Giant with some other foreign face.
DiBiase is a good answer. Who would you swap out
I’m not sure. I would have said the Iron Sheik, but he wasn’t known by that name at that time. However, I would have put him (or whoever, since I’d have them lose in the first round) in Inoki’s slot and put Inoki where Andre was placed. That way, it could be DiBiase and Inoki in the semi-finals.
I’d also have Patterson lose to Dynamite Kid in the quarter-finals, with the final match being Dynamite Kid vs. Ted DiBiase.
Quarter-finals:
Patterson vs. Dynamite Kid
Tony Parisi vs. Tony Garea, Battle of the Tonys
Mil Mascaras vs. Antonio Inoki
Mr. Fuji vs. Ted DiBiase
tony parisi will win be cos is italian italian ouesi won viva italia
