I've recently bought 2 ZXA1 Subs and 2 ZLX12p's, I did a gig last night, very large room 350 people, which is the largest event I would typically do, and the system sounded great, although I had to push it hard. Most gigs I do are under 200 people and smaller rooms, this system is perfect for that. I'd say that 2 of these subs does sound ALOT better than 1, I did another gig the week before with just 1 sub and it wasn't enough bass for that gig (200 ish people). I have to fit my set-up into a car so these subs are great for that. I had an RCF 15" beast previously and although it sounded great it was just to big and heavy, I don't want to end up with a crippled back by the time I'm 40!!

Brian, Ive done a party with 200 with this little sub, and had more than enough bass. I had the ELX118P, and this thing SMOKED it !

Correct. People, sofas, carpet, etc change accustic properties in any room. I have sound checked & performed in this room for several years, so i do have a point of reference here. This system would work fine with this room at full capacity doing exacally what it's supposed to do, which is create dance floor hot spots & conversation area cool spots.

... got me two of them to pair with my Yamaha StagePas 600i... at first it was strange... the praise of this sub was so convincing, that i wondered, why they don't sounded any good at all... but... my mistake, by being so giddy as a schoolgirl and sooooo thrilled, that i forgot to test the polarity and how they [EV's] are compatible with Yamaha SP600i... welllll... the solution was so simple, just flip the polarity switch on EV's, and let them roar... boy'o'boy, what the boxes puts out for that size ...
... my buying decision was partially thanks to this video, so, THANK YOU, and to the fact, that actualy there is not much choice of sub's that size and performance... i wanted, that my setup fits in to a small car, that i can it set up on my own and that all my setup's power draw under load is under 3Kw... soooo... two of the ZXA1 Sub's can be found in Latvia [english is not my native language]...

I currently have a behringer b1500d-pro sub, it's too damn heavy for me to deal with with my bad back anymore. Would one of these be anywhere near as powerful sounding as my b-1500d? If not, would two of them be as powerful? if not more? I know the wattage is 300rms less per sub than my behringer, and the woofer is smaller, so I assume I'd need two. I'm just talking power, I know sound quality on this is supposed to be waaaay better on these than the behringer.

Good morning Brian, I am a big fan of this sub but i dont like the wobble that i get when pole mounting tops on these. do you think using an aftermarket m20 adapter would be a good idea? this is what i have found so far on-stage SSA20M. Looking forward to your reply.

I use one of these with 2 RCF 310As top cabs and its a good combo. Talking event with 150 people with a dance floor of 50-100 people at any given time. Its not super low end but I don't need that with most types of music for corporate events , house parties and weddings. I do need to push the system to get the energy up but its totally adequate once I've hit that level. Its comfortable SPL that people can feel but not hurt ears. I'm thinking of adding another to the setup with one more 310a top cab and then I won't have to push it so hard and it will fill the room even more nicely and take it up to 150+ people on the dancefloor floor with quality vs ear punishing sound. If you are an R&B , Hip Hop or Deep house dj and fanatical about deep bass then of course go a bigger sub. But if you want to add warm , musical punchy low-end to live performance pop and dance then this sub is a good balance of size, portability and performance. Fits in my hatchback car nicely too as it is very compact. Hope the above helps. Ps. Brian thank you for your vids. So professional and informative. Hope you're well.

I agree. I get online and everyone is like "oh you want to do the etx 18" but I just sold my 18's because they were just way too big. That box is like just as big as my old subs. I'm thinking just one kw181 and two k8's. A nice compact system but has a nice compact sub too that can hit some lower frequencies than a 12. There is a k8's with ksub system but idk... I wasn't too impressed with the ksub. Though maybe I could tweak the settings and be able to get more out of it. I just tried it at guitar center. I'm having a real hard time deciding. HELP!

Hi Brian, I wanna say fantastic demo-video on this sub. I liked it so much, I purchased the ZXA1-Sub. I really need your help with an issue I'm having with this sub. I have the older Pioneer DJM-600 connected to this sub. I also have my line at 0db or +1db my fader at five and from there I can't even get close to -5db on the master volume without it clipping hard. I can't even put the gain on the back of the sub at 12 o'clock because I will get a solid yellow on the limit light. I have to set gain at 10 o'clock position to avoid that. The farthest I can go without it clipping is about -10db on the master. I reached out to others on youtube who own this sub about this issue I'm having and they said that the sub may be defective. I've seen other videos where the zxa1 sub was performing way better than mine. Can this sub go a little more in volume without it clipping so easy? Thank you

Thanks for the vid. I'm looking into these subs, I'm currently using two Carvin LS1801A that I like crossing over at 80Hz so I'm not sure how I'm going to like crossing at 100Hz but may find out soon enough. I'm looking for something a little smaller for small to medium sized gigs and so far these are my choice.

Hey everyone, need some guidance. I would like to have a sub to help monitor low frequencies in my productions. I purchased the Electro-Voice ZXA1-Sub 12" Powered Subwoofer initially for DJing private events and was wondering if this sub is appropriate for production purposes. I have a pair of KRK Rokit 8's and was wondering how anyone sets the cutoff frequency so that the sub just handles the sub frequencies and sends the rest to the KRKs.
I have completely muted the sub to see what frequencies the monitors were still processing and the KRKs were still putting out bass frequencies. I understand the sub might not even be appropriate in this setting but wanted to provide you all with what I have already attempted. Thank you.

Hi Brian, Nothing wrong about the EV sub, but many people make the mistake to work with the wrong tops. The EV sub has a lowpass filter, but he will not cut the low freq. to the top cabinets. The EV has a direct (chain) output. Active tops will get the full freq. response. That means small cabinets will run out of breathe. EV tops have a knob to choose between full range or work together with a sub. When you choose to work with a sub, in that case the tops can handle more power because everything beneath 100HZ the sub will do this job. If you have active tops (the brand is not important), look for this button on your'e top cabinet when it is a active model. Otherwise it is useful to work with a Separate active cross over like a DBX rackdrive.

As always, thanks for all of your vids... I am planning to order a pair of EV ZLX12P tops, and a single ZXA1 Sub on Monday. Later I would like to add to that, wish EV had a 15" sub.... would a pair of the ZXA1 Sub be good for around 200 people? I'm wondering if I will want a second 12" sub or if I will just want to use the 12 for small gigs and when I expand go with larger 15"-18" subs. I always liked 12" speakers, so I will have to just listen to it when it gets here I guess. I will be getting 4Play CL, a second Mini Kinta with DMX cable to master/slave it to the one I have already, and a slimpack 56. Also a fog machine. I know you're an ADJ guy, but what do you think of that for a starter lighting setup? Later I would like to add a small laser or something for a centerpiece, along with more wash/uplighting and a DMX controller for the whole lot. Any suggestions on lasers or centerpiece lights would be great. I was thinking a Micro Galaxian and/or Min Laser RBX. Along with these speakers and lights, I'm picking up stands, cabling, cable wraps/ties, and a few other bits. I am also upgrading my Serato Intro controller to a new Serato DJ controller. I will be pre-ordering the new Reloop Terminal Mix 8, it looks to be the best bet for me as far as Serato controllers that are available right now. I like the wall powered aspect, the long pitch faders, large jogs, RGB pad setup, and similar layout to my Mixtrack Pro 2 but with more features and the 4Ch. mixer section. I think this will let me grow and learn and should serve me well for at least a few years. If you'd be into helping me get this venture off the ground I would really appreciate it, I have questions about things like business insurance, reasonable goals for growth and setting up pricing and all sorts of stuff. Any input you could give would be great! Thanks again!

I would only use this for small gigs of 50 people or so. You so 150 people but that's not a 150 person hip hop party. Also the room you are in is loaded with echos. However if you keep adding more subs you can do larger events. It looks like you can stack them. I would love to see two stacked per side for a total of 4 subs. Maybe we get up to 250 people for hip hop. I like the flexiblity of this sub. For weddings, yes you can get to 150 people with a single sub. Heck, you often don't need any subs for weddings.

  • @Quiggers1981

This is typical of EV, they use long throw drivers meaning you can move air with needing a large diameter driver, they do their acoustics and transducer design and make great gear. Hence the 700w amp, the driver can handle that power. Good to see you back solo gigging Brian,

    Hi Brian
    Thanks for this information.
Can I ask why you dont use the RCF sub to match your RCF 408 A speakers.
And also vis versa why not use the EV tops to match the EV Sub.
I am s vocal singer using backing tracks mainly and audiances are between 150 to 200 what would you recommend. Thanks keep up the good work.

3000w is 1500w a side into 4ohms, most subs are 4ohms but some peavey subs are 8ohm, it'll tell you on the back, anyway the amp is twice as powerful as your subs, and if you turn it up it will trigger the speaker protection, sometimes this lamps the level, sometimes it blows a little fuse inside the speaker cab, either way you dont want to do it,a 1500w amp would be perfect but i would recommend buying a 2000w, only ever turning it up 3/4, this is how i run all my amps, even in active speakers.

  • @dandrewsDJ
    @dandrewsDJ 12 лет назад +1

2 18s will be better, no doubt. But having 2 ZXA-1s will be darn near close. You will most likely just end up using your 2 ZXA-1s instead of the ELX118P. I run 1 EV ZXA-1 sub with 2 ELX112P Tops, and I can easily do a large room. Planning to add another sub this fall however.

  • @briansredd

Well of course, but there is that peleminary test you need to do that's not in front of an audience. You don't need the surprise of things just not working out during a gig. This system will do fine though. Done with people spooking me to the system's capabilities dispite what info and tests I've gathered and done

The tweets are twice as powerful & there is a 100 hz crossover with 700 watts dedicated to sub bass. What the 312A's alone would give you that this system dosen't is more mid bass because of the 12 inch woofers, however you would loose sub bass. I prefer this system's overall sound opposed to just a pair of 312A's

In this video your saying that the cross over in the sub only sends from 100 hertz up to your top speaker. That information is WRONG... the crossover sends full range to the top speaker... I know this because I bought one after watching your video the crossover frequency in the bin is 100hz it doesn't split the signal that's sent to the top.
