9:06 I was at Niagra Falls a few weeks ago, and that SAME stupid LED Casino sign on the New York side building was there. It should NEVER have been allowed to be put up! At certain points of the day and night, depending on where you're staying, it can be a real eyesore to something that is supposed to be pretty. But some greedy businessmen just HAD to install a gigantic LED flashing sign on top of the building. I think there is one like it placed vertically on the Canadian side, as well. It is too bad. Other than that, great video! Nice information!
What great footage. Thanks so much for posting this. It is awesome to watch all that water falling but you don't really realize the scale until at about 5:52 you see the teeny people walking about on the viewing rock. Just a question... why does the water make a circular pattern/whirlpool in that one spot by the dock? Is the bottom rock scoured out there and creating a current looping back or is it something about the bank that makes it? Finally, two things: One, it may look like an ice bridge to you but I think the footing looks a bit treacherous and I wouldn't want to walk over all those giant cracks, and Two, there may be an American side and a Canadian side but it all looks like (lots of) the same kind of water falling on both sides. Wink.
It's the river current looping back, a reverse eddy which becomes a swirl. Also, the river bank below the water is steep, and the middle of the river is deep with a stronger current, creating an endless undertow which forces the 'shallower' and slower water nearer the banks to flow the other way, opposite to the main current.
The Ice Bridge usually seems to form in a time period say very late Dec or early to mid Jan. It's hard to pinpoint, Some years, it freezes, thaws, in a month or so, and then refreezes again. Some years, it doesn't freeze, or stays frozen only a short time. And yes, the Christmas light displays are set up for the holiday season around the parkway, and of course the falls themselves are nicely lit all the time
Thanks for such a great video and included descriptions! We just got back a couple days ago.

awesome, approx. how early in the fall does the ice start to freeze on Niagara? and does Niagara still put the lights on in the winter months?
