Out Chasing Feral Goats || Game On

- I'm out on on a local contract shoot today chasing Feral Goats.
The biggest challenge chasing feral goats on this property is the steep terrain and dense bush.
The goats pass through here occasionally and crossing paths with them is really a game of chance.
Generally, my plan of attack is to send up the drone and see if they are about.
With a large mob of goats spotted on the far side of the property it was time to close the distance.
I set off with my rifle, tripod and camera. The hunt was on.
Running my Sako .223 topped with the HikMicro Panther PQ50L V2.0 thermal scope.
First obstacle was to avoid the farmers friends, (sticky beaks/ Cobler's Pegs). These things stick to you like glue and can be quite uncomfortable.
I had only walked roughly 80m and I could smell the goats already.
If you've crossed paths with an adult Billy, (male) they absolutely stink. Unfortunately they had made their way into the dense scrub on the hillside. Not surprising as it is fairly late afternoon and they generally bed down in the thick stuff before nightfall for safety.
I decided it was now or never.
Ditching the tripod as I pushed through the near impenetrable bush to get close.
Shooting off the shoulder I managed to drop 4 goats in quick succession, the 4th goat running almost up to the end of the barrel, big mistake. It was mayhem, with goats taking off in all directions.
With quite a few of the goats heading up higher I decided to give chase.
Well, definitely not as fit as it thought I was. Puffing and panting, I managed to catch up with a breakaway group near the ridge-line.
Only had the opportunity to take one more before they were out of sight.
5 goats culled in total, not quite as many as I'd hoped for but thats just how it goes sometimes.
In Australia, feral goats have been estimated to cause losses to livestock farming of $25 million per year, not including their impact on the environment or pasture degradation. Feral goats also negatively affect conservation values and biological diversity by damaging the vegetation and competing with native animals. - Развлечения
People don't realise the effort you guys go to making these videos. Shooting, recording, narrating .... well done to you.
Also, a great example of using thermal during day light hours. Tough conditions and makes us all realise, not every trip will be 47 foxes!
Btw, LOVE the comment and smile about ".... doing it for a job" - You nailed it right there and then Rod 👍🏻
Really appreciate the positive feedback mate. Been wanting to do a video like this for ages. Something that shows a bit more detail about what we do rather than just bang flop all the time. Hopefully it gives a bit more of an insight into our line of work. 👌
@@RJMHuntingAustralia you’ve shown what most of us (and likely you too) go through most trips.
Hard slog, little reward at times …. but a positive impact on the environment and rural businesses.
….. unless of course you are Nathan “Hollywood” Stuart who has ‘extras’ furnishing him KFC off camera 😉
One of only a few channels I give a thumbs up for the video before even watching it, great shooting as always, thanks for taking us along.
Thankyou mate. You're a good man. 👊
Keeping the Aussie bushman lingo alive rod😂, grouse shooting mate.👌👍🦘🦘🦘🐊🐊🐊.
Thanks champion 👊
Love the anatomy lesson.. the head end or the arse end. 😂 Keep the videos coming 🏴
Lol. Just keeping it simple mate 👌😅
As South Oz Hobby Hunter calls them a Texas Enema. 😜.
🤣
Thanks Rod, what a crap area, you must be disappointed that couldn't take a piece of goat home. As you know it is lovely eating. Cheers,
Always next time mate 👍
as always, excellent editing, video lay out and explanation of the hunt. Production quality. Good job mate!!
Thanks heaps mate. Really means a lot. Not many people realise the many hours involved in punching out a watchable video.
Awesome as usual
Thank you! Cheers!
"This place has shit-tonne of farmers friends, I probably look like a walking kiwi fruit!" All time RUclips quote of the week 😀 Classic Aussie shooter this bloke 🙂
cheers mate 😉
Yeah I laughed at that too,
I found that I could smell them before I could see them 👍🏼🏴
Yep. No mistaking the smell of a stinky billy from a mile away if the wind is right. 🤮😅
Such hard work ethic
Always love your marksmanship
Such a shame you did not get more on this outing. Keep uploading your adventures in the outback keeping the pests at bay ! Some what .
Thanks mate. Will do 👊
Excellent video, Rod. Thanks a lot and best of luck for your efforts.
Cheers mate 👍
Cracking video, great work Rod, looking forward to the next one 😉👍👏
Thank you mate 👊
You may be getting older, but you are a really are a genuine Skippy. It comes out in your "technical descriptions" of things. Great work as usual Sir.
Thanks Michael.
Certainly proud to be an Aussie mate. Thanks for watching. 👊
Love these sort of programs, they tell how and show it is, it is well done, we enjoyed your hard work.
Thanks champion 👊
Excellent work yet again Rod, take it easy old mate.
Thanks Daniel 👊

Came close a couple of times mate. 🤣
Best job in the world 👍
Can't argue with that 👌
Top work Mate, love the vids.
Thanks champion 👍
Thank you Rod. That's doing it the hard way cobber but it has to be done. You did it well mate.🤠
Cheers Daryl, appreciate that mate 👍
Great video !
Thank you 👊
Baaad day for old Billy to be headbangen.👍
Certainly didn't work out that well for him. 🤦♂️👌
Great work Rodney as always,I’m sure the owner would be appreciative.
Always nice to get a result Michael. Thanks mate 👌
Great shooting, impressed with the night scope through the day. That lantana looks like hard yakka. keep at it mate we love the vids.
Thanks buddy 👊
Great job as always 😃, The John Wayne of Australia 😋
Haha. Well thanks "Partner"... 😅
good work mate it's good getting a few on the deck
Yeah thanks mate. Not bad considering the terrain. 👌
As usual mate, very entertaining. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it buddy. Thank you 👊
Another great video mate 👍🏼
Thanks champion 👊
Good looking dog. 👍
Thanks. She's learning fast. Good company too
Nice work as always :)
Cheers mate 👍
Great video mate. There are all sorts of videos to watch on the net. Your videos are very relaxing, I always take half a breath as you aim,,,, Old grunt habits.. love the Australian bush. Really appreciate the efforts you put in. All the best from Lismore NSW
Appreciate that mate.
Hope you guys are doing ok after the recent wet weather. 👊
Love your vids you put lots of effort into your vids keep up the great work!❤
Much appreciated mate. Thankyou 👊
Great video Rod 🔥
Thanks Ian. 👌
Thanks for lugging the camera along so we can experience what you do.
No worries mate 👌
Enjoyable Video, 1st time viewing a Goat Plinker.
Thanks mate 👍
I envy u Rodney, i wish i was out hunting, love your vids cheers
Really appreciate that mate. Thankyou 👊
Nice shooting it’s not easy when your lugging all the gear about and trying to shoot as well..great vid as always👍🏻
Thanks for that mate 👊
Great example of how hard it is sometimes to earn your shots, even edited down you can see the huge effort needed to secure the opportunity, well played 🍻
Thanks mate.
Very rewarding when you get a result on the tougher jobs. 👌
Great footage mate
Thanks buddy. Glad you enjoyed it
Definitely a good case for eye protection.
After three lots of eye surgery, mine are standard wear when I'm outdoors.
New sub mate. Ps love how you outline the hunt and gear in the transcript
Thanks Mark.
Nice to know someone actually reads it. 👌👊
Great work dad
Dad???
I hope this is who I think it is.??
Otherwise I might have some explaining to do. 🤣
I didn't think you would reply but I'm not your son lol 😆 😂 🤣 😅 I just had to tho great shooting/video. Dad 😆 🤣 😂
Another good video Rod. You would think the land owner would be doing more to get rid of the lantana as per legislation.
They've actually been doing really well with their weed management. This place is several hundred acres of steep country which was totally covered in weeds. They've been hard at it for a couple of years now and have sorted more than 50% of the property. The goats add to weed spread from neighbouring properties which doesn't help.
Tough job yet well done champ. Great long shots there, I heard is hard to get close to goats and one has to move against the wind not to be noticed.
Much harder when they're out i the open. Pretty easy in thick cover as long as you're quiet and have the wind in your face 👌
This was a fascinating, informative video!! I loved seeing the work you do to get your targets!! I’m sorry about the scratches, of course, but I appreciate your attitude; them varments aren’t gonna waltz up to you, are they? Your comments on your fitness was entertaining; thanks for the honesty 👍! I’m a fat 70 year old lady, so I get you about the fitness angle 😂! I can barely walk to the mail (post) box and back without getting all out of breath 🤭😬
Thanks again for this great video! Could you please do more like it? Your marksmanship is top notch, but I like seeing your bush craft, too; you’re no slouch on the stalk! Wonderful!❤❤
Haha. Thanks very much Donna.
I'll see what I can do 😉 👌
Ashame you couldn’t get a compound bow in there. Great vid as usual..!
Yeah. Don't own one anymore.
Would have lost a shit load of arrows. 😅
@@RJMHuntingAustraliathey’re dearer than bullets too, happens to the best of us hahaha
That's for sure 💯
Great stuff mate honestly people think cleaning up goats is an easy task but from my experience you work hard to get into a protective shooting spot but you only get 2 or 3 before it’s all over so I think you done well mate cheers
Totally agree with you there Michael 👍
Great real world vid. Thanks for uploading. As I know goat meat is worth a bit, if the farmer has such a problem with goats, I am surprised he doesn't try hearding them for harvesting. Know a lot of farmers were doing this the NSW side of the Vic/NSW boarder (well within 100km of the boarder). 2018 they were getting $75 a head minimum.
Not anymore mate prices have dropped big time!
Thanks mate. Unfortunately the arse has fallen out of the market mate. Not to mention it's not the best terrain for a dog team
@@RJMHuntingAustralia Agreed about the dogs. So, what was an asset is now a pest. Amazing how things change. Funny how the meat values hasn't changed for the consumers...lmao I look forward other vids. Find them interesting and teaching me what to expect when I finally get a chance to get out there and have some fun ! To be honest I cannot wait !
Glad ur enjoying them mate. 👊
@@darrensmith4661 same thing happened with deer in the 90s in Queensland. Market died and a bunch of farmers found themselves with animals that cost more to feed than they were worth, so suddenly there was a rash of escapes from kids joyriding in tractors, who'd run through a fence and the deer would all bolt. "Ah too bad about that. At least the cops came out and gave me a case number so I can lodge an insurance claim... Let's look into alpacas and ostriches".
RJM. Good video. Difficult vegetation to work through. When they are in a group, it's almost like you could use a machine gun, but even in the US a person has to have a special permit for that, even then not sure the powers to be would allow shooting animals even if they are a pest like the wild hogs in Texas and other areas. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing. Take care.
Probably not the most ethical of control methods mate. 😉
I'll just keep chipping away. Certainly made a big dent in their numbers over the last 2 years
@@RJMHuntingAustralia You're correct. Just keep working at the way you should. I had not heard of feral goats before. I know we have a lot of feral pigs that tear up farmland. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate
Steady as she goes Rodney
Haha. Too right mate 😉
Lovely rifle
DANG...I would be eating like a King...That is some great meat left behind....I should move out there...lol
I'm a lot more partial to lamb than goat. The odd young goes pretty good in a curry though.
Don't worry about the fitness to much Rodney, were all getting older 🤣
Don't I know it mate. 🤣
💚💚💚💜💚
Thanks
You need an assistant Rod to help carry all the gear but great shoot and yes it was thick Shit to navigate through.
Maybe I just have to harden up. 😉
sweet!
Thanks
Those goats might start to get the feeling that you don't want them around. Looking at the brush and terrain, it must be very difficult to make a big dent in the population. Good video.
They'll generally move off for a week or two and then make their way back. Removed close to 150 goats of this place in the last 2 years.
@@RJMHuntingAustralia That's a lot of goat stew. A LOT of goat stew.
The drone footage looks cool. Was waiting for some grenades to be dropped into the middle of the pack...
Lol.
I think you play too many video games. 🤦♂️😅
@@RJMHuntingAustralia very possibly kinda guilty! ;)
Bạn bắn súng tuyệt vời lắm. Những con thú hoang khó thoát khỏi tay bạn hi 🇦🇺👋.
Thankyou champion
Looked like a hard day at the office, mate. You need an apprentice to chase after things through the thick stuff. 😃
Yeah. You're spot on there mate. 🤦♂️🤣
Nice shot say maybe try camping there .
I get contracted for a set amount of hours mate. With the goats being so transient, I try to spread those hours out as much as I can.
Leave them there they eat weeds😜 great video 👍
Can't do that mate
Good stuff Rodney. Always a 👍from me
Can the drone be used to drive the mob toward you?
Awesome as always!
Did you have your dress shoes on???? 😂🤣😂🤣👊
Had my trusty RJM Williams. Oops, I mean RM Williams 😉
Great content as always Rod. But when will we see the Taipan X in action?
Not till I can get back out on the pigs again mate. I run the bolt actions for the fox and goat work
G'day mate! Ummm... did u hear them goats call ur name? Da'da'daaa dy 😂
Lol. That's terrible 🤣
The property i go for goats musters (traps) them twice a year and does quite well from it. Its easy as pie to trap them. Only problem for me is theres rarely any trophy class heads. If any.
Backstraps marinated with a bit of curry powder and yoghurt,, you can't go wrong
Another great video of course. I wonder if goats would enter a feeder pen with a remote door trigger and cameras etc. Good way to catch the whole troop but I dont know anything about goat behavior.
Unfortunatelythey have an abundance of feed. It all comes down to time, location and money.
Thanks for the vid mate...may I ask please - where did you get the hunting/rifle head for your tripod?
I'm running a Sirui K30x camera ball head to arca swiss plate on the rifle. Fairly accessible online.
THose goats had worse battle scars than you. Excellent job.
Lol. Thanks mate
Great job mate. Do all the small white pixels that we can see in the thermal clips show up in the thermal scope while you’re using it or are they just part of the recording?
Running a prototype device atm.
Yes, the pixels show up on the device too. It has been sent back for repair. The new audio in it is awesome though.
All part of the field testing process 👌
5 is better than none!
Certainly is mate 👍
Are goats a daylight or dusk project Rod...very good work...dry lantana is serious
Really depends on the temperature and location.
Hot days, it's certainly early morning or late arvo.
During in winter the window of opportunity is much greater.
Great video...what is your choice of ammo you were using?
Thanks mate.
I using Adi World Class factory ammunition with the 55gr Sierra Blitz Kings
Hello. Lâu rồi mới gặp lại nhau. Chúc bạn vui vẻ Hạnh Phúc và an lành nhé. Bạn OK 🇦🇺👍.
Thanks buddy 👊
Do you think the new 8.6 Blackout would be over kill for hunting goats? Just a question.
Certainly not mate.
Overkill is a myth in my opinion mate.
Nothing unethical about a quick clean kill.
If only you could off the side of the road just outside of Nyngan, there is hundreds of wild goats within 100m.
At a rough guess, I could be way off though, there would have been 80 - 100 goats for every 5km
That's crazy mate.
Shame the arse has fallen out of the live goat market.
Nuxe work definitely not easy
Thanks mate. I do enjoy the challenge though. 👌
Love goats, but if they are feral, causing damage, they have to go. Could they be harvested for meat, wool, horns??? The terrain there looked a proper challenge. Nice job.
Trapping is not really an option due to the terrain and limited access mate
It's a tough job but someone has to do it
I love it mate. Very grateful I get to do something I'm passionate about. 👊
Rough terrain in that bloody lantana, Rod. I hate the shit with a vengeance. It drew blood mate, but that's o.k. You've still got a few pints left. O.o
Have you had any lung infections recently Rod? You were puffing and panting like an old bellows, we don't want to see you busting a boiler out there mate.
Great action in close on those goats, that thermal really came into its own there, shame it wasn't just a little more open. I reckon you'd have had a field day. Take care.
Yeah, not a fan of it either mate.
Hard to catch the buggers out in the open.
@@RJMHuntingAustralia In NZ years ago in my youth? Hunting in the wilds of north west Sth IS. (Now all National Parks) We used to lay behind a log, scream like a (kid) baby goat in distress, the others would come out into the open, and up we would pop, 4 or 5 of us. All goats gone. Job Lot. Bit like a fox call mate. O.o
I'll have to practice my goat calling 👌
Do you take your drone with you, to see if the target pest animals have moved ?
They're pretty switched on to the drone now. Usually leave it in the vehicle if I can park close enough
Goodonya RJM! I was under the impression that the goats ate the vegetation that livestock didn’t necessarily eat..? Is this a the case ?
Generally the case but they also eat a lot of the new natives that have been planted. Introduce weeds, cause soil erosion o the hills and damage the fencing
Do you feel like this exercise is Mission Impossible, looking at the terrain trapping is out of the question. Do you collect and sell the carcasses?
Great shooting.
Not allowed to sell the carcasses without the relevant permits and access to a chiller.
Purely pest control mate. 👌
@@RJMHuntingAustralia Good to know, thanks.
Easily one of my fave hunting channels alongside “edge of the outback”. Do you bow hunt much?
Thanks mate.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to draw a bow due to a shoulder injury several years ago mate.
@@RJMHuntingAustralia keep up the content. Love it
I'd like to know the information on the thermal imaging scope you used.
It's the HikMicro Panther PQ50L V2.0 mate
@@RJMHuntingAustralia Thanks! If I'm around for the full meltdown of society I want to make it thru at least the 1st week! 🤣
You and me both mate 😉
What sort of issues do these goats cause .??
What's with the possum or bird nest in the tree at about the 5:04 minute mark.
It's all about providing breeding boxes for various native species mate. Part of the biobanking and regeneration agreement.
what do you do with the goat carcass leave them or eat them
Purely pest control on this property mate so they are generally left in situ.
Waking up hill with 30 lbs of gear is a lot of work.
I just need a bit more match fitness mate. 😅
You would have thought that those goats were a benefit to the farmer by eating all the pest weeds.
Trouble is that they also eat all the new native tube stock, spread weeds, cause soil erosion on the sloped areas and damage fencing.
I am on your page. I have personally seen the damage that you've mentioned in my own hunting pursuits. Finding the right balance is almost impossible. Controlling their numbers is the only way.
Spot on mate 👌
How do the feral goats get on the land ??
Feral goats originated as escapees from farms. They form mobs in the Australian bushland, breed up and roam freely.
@@RJMHuntingAustralia thank you
Perhaps get the goats to eat the lantana.
The bastards eat everything, not just the weeds unfortunately 😉
You ever used a judas billy goat to bring in the ferals to you ?
No mate, don't have the means nor the gear
How can you tell the wild ones from the farm ones
Easy, They're not supposed to be on this property and they don't have ear tags
Do you eat anything you kill?
Sometimes mate. Most of the time it's purely pest control
Lantana gotta love it NOT well done
Cheers Mark 👊
Hey man, would love to come out and hunt with you if you ever consider let me know
Appreciate the offer mate, however due to insurance restrictions it's not something I could do.
