Out Chasing Feral Goats || Game On

  • I'm out on on a local contract shoot today chasing Feral Goats.
The biggest challenge chasing feral goats on this property is the steep terrain and dense bush.
The goats pass through here occasionally and crossing paths with them is really a game of chance.
Generally, my plan of attack is to send up the drone and see if they are about.
With a large mob of goats spotted on the far side of the property it was time to close the distance.
I set off with my rifle, tripod and camera. The hunt was on.
Running my Sako .223 topped with the HikMicro Panther PQ50L V2.0 thermal scope.
First obstacle was to avoid the farmers friends, (sticky beaks/ Cobler's Pegs). These things stick to you like glue and can be quite uncomfortable.
I had only walked roughly 80m and I could smell the goats already.
If you've crossed paths with an adult Billy, (male) they absolutely stink. Unfortunately they had made their way into the dense scrub on the hillside. Not surprising as it is fairly late afternoon and they generally bed down in the thick stuff before nightfall for safety.
I decided it was now or never.
Ditching the tripod as I pushed through the near impenetrable bush to get close.
Shooting off the shoulder I managed to drop 4 goats in quick succession, the 4th goat running almost up to the end of the barrel, big mistake. It was mayhem, with goats taking off in all directions.
With quite a few of the goats heading up higher I decided to give chase.
Well, definitely not as fit as it thought I was. Puffing and panting, I managed to catch up with a breakaway group near the ridge-line.
Only had the opportunity to take one more before they were out of sight.
5 goats culled in total, not quite as many as I'd hoped for but thats just how it goes sometimes.
In Australia, feral goats have been estimated to cause losses to livestock farming of $25 million per year, not including their impact on the environment or pasture degradation. Feral goats also negatively affect conservation values and biological diversity by damaging the vegetation and competing with native animals.

People don't realise the effort you guys go to making these videos. Shooting, recording, narrating .... well done to you.
Also, a great example of using thermal during day light hours. Tough conditions and makes us all realise, not every trip will be 47 foxes!
Btw, LOVE the comment and smile about ".... doing it for a job" - You nailed it right there and then Rod 👍🏻

@@RJMHuntingAustralia you’ve shown what most of us (and likely you too) go through most trips.
Hard slog, little reward at times …. but a positive impact on the environment and rural businesses.

They've actually been doing really well with their weed management. This place is several hundred acres of steep country which was totally covered in weeds. They've been hard at it for a couple of years now and have sorted more than 50% of the property. The goats add to weed spread from neighbouring properties which doesn't help.

Market died and a bunch of farmers found themselves with animals that cost more to feed than they were worth, so suddenly there was a rash of escapes from kids joyriding in tractors, who'd run through a fence and the deer would all bolt. RJM. Good video. Difficult vegetation to work through. When they are in a group, it's almost like you could use a machine gun, but even in the US a person has to have a special permit for that, even then not sure the powers to be would allow shooting animals even if they are a pest like the wild hogs in Texas and other areas. Rough terrain in that bloody lantana, Rod. I hate the shit with a vengeance. It drew blood mate, but that's o.k. You've still got a few pints left. O.o
Have you had any lung infections recently Rod? You were puffing and panting like an old bellows, we don't want to see you busting a boiler out there mate.
Great action in close on those goats, that thermal really came into its own there, shame it wasn't just a little more open. I reckon you'd have had a field day. Take care.

@@RJMHuntingAustralia In NZ years ago in my youth? Hunting in the wilds of north west Sth IS. (Now all National Parks) We used to lay behind a log, scream like a (kid) baby goat in distress, the others would come out into the open, and up we would pop, 4 or 5 of us. All goats gone. Job Lot. Goodonya RJM! I was under the impression that the goats ate the vegetation that livestock didn’t necessarily eat..? Is this a the case ?

    • @RJMHuntingAustralia
      @RJMHuntingAustralia  2 месяца назад +1

Generally the case but they also eat a lot of the new natives that have been planted. Introduce weeds, cause soil erosion o the hills and damage the fencing
