Thank you for making this tutorial. I'm an experienced sewer and this pattern was difficult for me. I really appreciated having your video to refer to when I was stuck on a step.
I'm so happy this exists. I've only ever made my own patterns so far (because youtube is my teacher lol) so I bought this thinking it might help me learn something, but opening it up I was overwhelmingly confused 😅 can't wait to follow along with your video, thank you!
My daughter wanted a version a dress similar to this dress and I ordered this pattern after watching your video. I’m a novice sewer but your tutorial was so clear and helpful and we were able to make the dress, with our own custom modifications even! The bodice lining would have been impossible for me based on sewing pattern directions alone, but your video tutorial made it clear, especially when sewing the back to the front. So helpful! My daughter and I thank you for a great video!
So much yes in this comment! 🙌🏼 Im so I’m happy you were able to bring your daughters vision to life and I partly make these videos for this reason. I very much appreciate this comment! 🥰
Thank you so much! I'm fairly new to the sewing process and I saw this pattern and fell in love. I'm so excited to start working on this, you made it so much easier to understand
I am nearly finished making this dress for my daughter's matric farewell and I owe you my life 😂 Thank you so much for the video tutorials. The pattern instructions were like Greek to me and without your videos I would never have managed ❤️❤️❤️
Colleen Mollentze That’s awesome!! I’m so glad it helped🤗, I’ve been to that point where I’ve stared at the same paragraph of instructions for an hour and still have gotten no where 😂
Great video. Wish I waited for it but tackled the pattern. A bit of panic but I was able to complete it. Took a break and just have to sew the inside down. Thanks again for posting as now I actually have a reference if I need to complete another. Can’t wait for more videos.
Yes!! It took me a few days to get it all figured out too. It makes me a little less afraid to try similar patterns now though. Simplicity does have a couple other similar ones that I would to try!
This is one of the patterns I had to stare at the pictures and read the instructions over and over for about an hour before it finally clicked. 🤣I’m happy it helped! 😊 yes you can definitely switch to shirring, I think that would be really easy modification to switch!
Thankyou for making this tutorial! I hope you will show the making of dress A as that's the style of JSK I prefer. I plan to try making dress A as soon as I can find some good fabric. Do you have any good tips for where to get suitable fabric?
I do have a few requests for the other versions and I’m hoping I’ll get to them this year! You can definitely find some really pretty Japanese/border print fabrics from Etsy if you really want that authentic Lolita look! They are pricy when buying a few yards but way cheaper then buying the real thing.
@@Blacksheepmeet Thankyou I bought some wonderful French seamstress themed fabric that I love today. I can't wait to attempt Dress A. Thankyou again for doing dress B seeing how to do the shirring was very helpful.
Thank you!! 🤗 I truly think the flounces are the best part 😍 It is possible to skip the shirring, BUT you will definitely need to add a zipper, possibly on the side seam maybe. Or maybe even snaps to attach the center inset piece might work as well. Do a mock up for the shirring piece so you cut out the rectangle to fit you in the bodice and if you decide on the snap method, mock that up as well since you might have to make the piece bigger to accommodate the snaps. It till take a lot of playing around with pieces, but would be a great option to personalize it! Good luck with whatever method you use and patience is 🔑!!
I’ve had that same experience when I tried to make a play suit/ jumper costume years ago 😂😂 They now have exact patterns for what I was trying to do at the time, but man o man, that was a journey 😩🤣😅
No, I like to save my patterns cause you never know when you’ll need another size. So I personally use tissue paper to trace out the pieces I need and it’s extremely inexpensive to get a large pack! Glad this helped you out! 😊
I made mine some weeks ago and I have to say that the instructions are very confusing and overly hard. I made some small changes to the method to make my life easier. (Note that I made the skirt of view A): ❤️Ironed the seam allowances of the top to the opposite sides, on the lining I ironed them towards the sides and on the fashion fabring towards the center to reduce the bulk. 🧡I ironed interfacing to both sides of the straps to reduce the woblyness when you sew large lace and added notches to make sure I was sewing them right. Also, I made them way shorter, my straps are about 36cm. 💛Clipped the curves of the top to release the tension and reduce bulk and cut the seam allowance that lays on the bottom (when you iron them to the side, the half that lays right on the body) to the half. 💚I added the bodice linning before sewing the skirt and skirt lining and when sewing the bodice lining I did not turn the seam allowance of the front section inwards as it would look weird when attaching the skirt. 💙As I don't have a serger I made french seams on the skirt portion sewing half of the seam allowance with wrong sides together, cutted half of the seam allowance and finally, sewed the seam with right sides together so the raw edge is trapped inside the french seam. 💜Finally, I added skirt lining, sewing the top sandwiched between the skirt and the skirt lining. Hope this helps!
These are really amazing tips! I definitely agree to a lot of these if I were to ever make it again. I usually go along with the patterns when I make these tutorials because I feel it’s made with very basic sewing techniques so beginners can do them but when someone really wants to learn, it’s easy to make adjustments like these to really make it a professional piece! Thank you for sharing❤️❤️❤️
Is the petticoat underneath the same as the one you made a tutorial for? Or did you buy it somewhere else? Also thank you for making this video, I bought this pattern recently and I'm still learning how to read pattern instructions so this will be super helpful!!
You technically don’t have too but it gives stability and support to wherever you apply it. It’s usually in places like necklines, sleeve cuffs, button holes etc. so they aren’t so flimsy. If your making something quick and don’t plan to wear it again you can pass on it, but if you want your garnet to hold up for a long time and look a bit more professional, I wouldn’t skip out on it.
Sorry! Some how I've been missing your comments. :( I totally agree though, they were a bit long on me as well. Adjustable ones would be a great idea. Especially since I always forget to measure before I sew lol
😂 I actually found it at Joann’s in their novelty section. It was a few years ago so I’m not sure if they still sell that print. I’ve been sitting on it for a while not knowing what to make with it!
My daughter wants me to make this dress and I was lucky enough to find the pattern at Joanns for $1.99 however the pattern I got has p5 on it. Does that mean Petite? My daughter is 5'2 so do you think it would fit her? Thank you for the great directions. I am looking forward to making it.
I love those Joann sales! Only the best time to buy them 😀 the p5 actually doesn’t really mean anything other then what’s assumed to help categorize the pattern sizes in the envelope. I am actually 5’4 and you can see where the dress falls on me. To make it shorter, just measure from her natural waist to the length she wants and then measure the skirt pattern piece ( making sure to include the seam allowances on both ends) and cut off from the top of the piece however much you want to adjust. Be sure to always go by measurements on the package to get her correct size and you can also use the finished garment size listed at the bottom for reference. I also have my measurements listed in the description that you can use as a reference too. The back is all elastic so even if the bodice and waist are off by a little bit, it should be a forgiving fit. I hope that helps and the video too! 😊
I wouldn’t say it’s a beginner pattern but if you had put together a few other patterns before then it’s do-able since you’d be familiar with the pattern lingo and basic sewing techniques. The dress has A LOT of steps but nothing too complicated. The blouse did have a few confusing parts but I have a video for that too if you want to check it out. So I’d say not for a beginner but I don’t think you have to be a total intermediate either as long as you take your time following each step. I hope that helps give you an idea! 😊
No, I only have a video doing blouse A but they are very similar so most of the steps will be the same. I believe the difference is that they add a few more lace details to view B
There should be seams and dots that are indicated from the pattern itself and your just going to line them up first and then gather each of the 3 sections of the skirt to line up with that section of the bodice. The outer 2 sections should be more gathered then the middle because it will gather more when it’s bunched with the elastic. I did do a review video though, where I explained why and how I would make adjustments to the these gathers. If you decide to adjust it, the middle gathers should still have less then the 2 outer section gathers but don’t be afraid to play around with it. I know that parts a bit confusing in general so hopefully I’m making sense and this helps.
I didn’t make a mock up before sewing so it did not fit me perfectly. Most patterns usually are close to my size without much modification which is why I get lazy about it, but it’s a good step not to pass up especially if this was going to be something I would wear regularly! 🙂
WhereBlackSheepMeet sorry I’m hindsight my comment sounds so.. mean? That being said. Yeah mockups are the worst and I avoid them as much as possible. My suggestions come as a student, so take them with a grain of salt please Personally that sort of bubbling would make me not want to wear the dress. Which is why I noticed that so quickly. At least those alterations would be relatively easy fixes, were it something you would want to change. I did enjoy the video and found it helpful, and I generally liked the end product Thanks and good luck
Hi dear, thank you for posting these helpful videos! Is there any chance you might create a video tutorial for dress A, as well? Also, I had a question about the necessary amount of fabric! The dress pattern states that I would need a 45" or 60" wide fabric, but all of the fabrics I love are only available in 43". Do you think this is a problem for this particular pattern, or could I get away with it if I purchased the fabric a tad longer than listed, considering that the bodice and skirt are separate pieces? I would need to make it in size 16. I reckon 43" would work just fine, but I would like to make sure, as I have never dealt with Simplicity patterns before, and all other patterns that I make are in centimeters (I am located in Europe). I keep needing to convert inches and yard to centimeters and pray that it's correct, haha!
The 2 bodices are very similar, but I could possibly do a type of “part 2.5” where I just show how to put the bodice together in the future. I will put that on my list of video ideas! A lot of the time when you wash the fabric, it usually shrinks anyways so I always end up getting an extra yard then I need (also because I’m a fabric hoarder 😅). In the video my fabric is washed and is about the 43 inches wide also, so I think you would be safe if you got a bit more then what I have listed to be safe. I am living in Germany at the moment as well and I’m realizing the difference between the metric system as well so I think from now on I will try to list the meters, CM, MM somewhere in the video or in the info box to help with any confusion! Thank you so much for watching!! 🤗
I ALMOST BOUGHT THIS!!! But I immediately got overwhelmed.

Can you make a tutorial for the shirt?
I do already have a video tutorial for the shirt posted as well as for the alternate views.
I made mine some weeks ago and I have to say that the instructions are very confusing and overly hard. I made some small changes to the method to make my life easier. (Note that I made the skirt of view A):
❤️Ironed the seam allowances of the top to the opposite sides, on the lining I ironed them towards the sides and on the fashion fabring towards the center to reduce the bulk.

Yes, It’s the same one I have the tutorial for! It’s definitely a little tricky of a pattern so I’m happy this helped 🤗
Can I do this without lining
Just a question do you have to use interface? What will happen if you don’t?
You technically don’t have too but it gives stability and support to wherever you apply it. It’s usually in places like necklines, sleeve cuffs, button holes etc. so they aren’t so flimsy. If your making something quick and don’t plan to wear it again you can pass on it, but if you want your garnet to hold up for a long time and look a bit more professional, I wouldn’t skip out on it.
I would of made the straps adjustable

I don't understand the outer skirt example about how to mark the back skirt to the bodice
There should be seams and dots that are indicated from the pattern itself and your just going to line them up first and then gather each of the 3 sections of the skirt to line up with that section of the bodice. The outer 2 sections should be more gathered then the middle because it will gather more when it’s bunched with the elastic. The sleeves and torso need to be shorter, as it causes unflattering bubbling of the shirring in the back
