Very true
😂
Ye,i also killed my lead guitarist
straight up
Lmao
As long as the riff is sick, I'll like it in either tuning...
Same lol all these butthurts arguing over what tuning is best and I'm over thinking their all kinda sick as long as it sounds good
Yeah agreed any riff can sound great if it is great.
True words have spoken. You did it, pal.
Same so long as it’s in drop A....
same so long as it's in drop f#
Drop D is the only tuning capable of summoning Cthulhu.
*ahem* Call of Ktulu is in Standard Tuning
Ben Parsons I see you are a man of great taste
ThatGuyThatPlaysGuitar I second that. One of the best album closers in metal
“The Thing That Should Not Be” is actually in standard D. Gets confused quite often.
U realise that none of the three Metallica songs about ctulu are in drop D, The call of ktulu is in standard tuning and then The thing that should not be and dream no more are both in D standard
1:48 That's straight up gojira. Love that.
The transition to the drop tuning even sounded like it came off l'enfant sauvage
Bishop M reminds of the transition from major scale to minor in The Axe
The drop A version somehow sounds higher than the E standard version
The horns/finger part had me dying.
hahahah same here!
same here. lmfao
How have I never seen anyone do that before?!
+Zenith HAHAHAHA here too
that part killed me
Interesting how Standard E sounds extremely oldschool and 80s-like and the Drop tunings way more modern
agree so much. made me think of early metallica mixed with acdc
everyone loves oldschool
+Jason LovesABR yeah early dillinger was the heaviest stuff ever and it was in e
thats because it is
+Jason LovesABR there are lots of newer bands that play in standard still: sylosis, winds of plague, opeth (I know they are not new but still heavy as balls in standard)
Drop E sounds like the entire Doom Soundtrack. Righteous!
the doom soundtrack was actually made like this there is clip of mick gordon the guy who made the soundtrack for the 2016 DOOM on his yt channel where he explains that he liked the original soundtrack and played it on a 8 string guitar tuned to drop e

1:17’s riff was my favorite. The transition from e to b was nice
Agreed.
Totally agree, though honestly the standard tuning doesn't hold a candle to the drop B version.

The Drop B at 1:32 was the best all round riff for me.. I generally tune to drop B, mainly because I fan boy'd over slipknot in the late 90's and wanted to sound like them, and it's kinda stuck ever since.
I prefer and tune to dropped B also. Matches my style of voicing; not too harsh but not too weak. On a 30” scale baritone it sounds perfect. Try it on a regular scale and you get too much fret buzz. Also recommended EJ22 D’Addario strings if going for dropped B. Ernie Ball “Not Even Slinkys” will work too
Same here but I need new strings because for drop a and b 10-46 doesn't go really well
This is why i chose to be an rythym guitarist,
Groovy liccs and banging breakdowns

Okay Mr.Clean
the middle finger thing was metal as fuck. I'm surprised someone hasn't made that their trademark yet.
+Josh Steffen Hi
+Josh Steffen it looks freaking ridiculous thats why :D
some bands do it (mostly hardcore) and it pretty much sums up how pissy the whole genre is.
+mattadugga thats why i listen to metalcore most of the time when you see the MC bands live they dont do stupid shit like piss on the crowd or something
Lewis Austen I like some metalcore bands like lamb of god, most of them i just dont like the way they sound, i usually like the drumming and sometimes the vocals but i find the guitars are always too simple or downtuned to ridiculous lows.

I go against the norm by playing in the tightest tuning ever.
my strings are so tight my guitar neck buckles and as soon as you strum a chord all the strings break.

Don't drop D, do Standard D!

why?

+metalhusky I want to quickly be able to change between D and E, I don't want to have the hassle of tuning all the strings. Drop D works just as fine.

+William Shapiro It must be taken into consideration that he probably used different guitars for each tuning.
drop B anyone?
I know this is an old video, but I figured I'd weigh in. Both standard and alternate tunings lend well to their respective styles, although drop tuning is great for simplifying complex riffs written in standard tuning, which usually happens in the case of transcribing classical operas among other things. In the case of metal music, I stand by my original statement, but I will admit that downtuning the whole guitar does give it a bit of a sludgier, more evil sound.
My personal opinion, drop D sounds more evil than double drop B on a 9 string
sludgier is defanitly tge word for it
Tuning doesn't make heavy, it's the riff what needs to be heavy. This video is 100% proof.
Agustín Casciero except that drop e part. That was definitely heavier than standard e

if you can't be heavy in standard tuning, you're not heavy at all
true
+Noel Perez Also, if you can't be heavy without distortion, you're also not heavy at all.
+Messiah of Fire also, if you can't be heavy without a classical, non amplified guitar you're not heavy at all.
+AndreCorner Also, If you can't write brutal death grind sludge core riffs on a ukulele you're not heavy at all.
+AndreCorner If you can't play Death metal on nylon, don't bother saying you're a hardcore guitarist xD
This setup favors the drop tunings because when it switches to the drops, the feeling of song progression biases the listener. Still a great video.
+Murkaeus I find that interesting you think that. I still thought E standard was much better on almost all of the riffs
+Murkaeus You may be right, but most of these riffs I preferred in E Standard.
Even though I mostly play really dropped tunings myself (Drop A on a seven string, sue me), I reckon if you have to rely on dropped tuning to sound good you're not playing valuable / interesting stuff.
+Murkaeus I would agree. The advantage of Tunings Like E, Eb, and relatively speaking, C#, is that you get to keep some of the guitars natural low end. If setup for a drop tuning, the setup is too bright for standard. IMO Eb to F is where it's at.
+Murkaeus also his face implies preferences for the drop tunings, but i agree with him if it's metal
+Callan V I play my 7 string in drop F, come at me bro
Drop C still prevails for my musical taste!! such a sexy sounding tuning!
Man, this still rocks all these years later!! Jared is still king!

+Nathaniel Damarelos Yep, i think Ride, Master and Justice were all standard apart from maybe one song iirc? Then you have Sepultura, Opeth, Megadeth...
I prefer drop tunings as a guitarist. Much easier to create chords I prefer. Also depending on the vibe you're going for, a lower or higher tuning could be a good fit
I think we could learn something from rammstein and that is that you can tune in E standard, Drop D, or Drop C and sound awesome

Drop E? how about playing the bass man?
I'll often have an 8 string put in drop E, but I don't have a bass because I enjoy playing the rest of the guitar too
Why play bass when you can play both? (EAEADGBE)
cuz its not the same as a bass
James Phillips And because finding a good bass player is like finding a girl in her 30s that's still a virgin (or, a unicorn, about the same thing).
8,9 and 10 strings may be in the same octave as bass but guitar is still a mid range freq instrument while bass is for a low end of a mix. Therefore... NOT THE SAME

Depends which you can utilize the best. You are awesome at all of them, big ass respect
Love Drop D for slide. It also makes it easier to work the fretboard with both hands because it's simplified somewhat, almost like playing percussion (bottom 3 strings or top 3 strings played together as a group, and they will always work). Tons of songs are made a lot easier with it.
Also, your faces are awesome

Great video. In my opinion alternate tunings are just another way to be versitile. It's funny that people will find a reason to bicker about any and everything.
+Joseph Clay thank you, at least one person who gets it!
+givemeajackson Also glad to see I'm not the only one. I belive that as long as the guitar is set up to where you don't ruin the clarity then do what you want, but then again, you may be looking for loss of clarity! It's music, DO WHAT YOU WANT!
Joseph Clay yeah. and with the right gear and mix, an 8 string can just as clear as a 6 in e standard.
+Joseph Clay ikr. So many songs have already been written in standard E. Why do people feel that drop tuning your guitar is a bad thing?
+PorscheJon Mainly because of shitty musicians who use it a a crutch. Personally, I play in Drop C and D standard, but my riffs sound heavy in any tuning. A lot of guys out there feel that tuning lower will make it heavier, when that isn't the case. A heavy riff sounds heavy in any tuning and is generally memorable, however, if your riff doesn't sound heavy unless it's in some super low tuning, then chances are you wrote a shitty riff. Many of us aren't against using low tunings, we're against mediocre guitarists using it as a crutch to make up for lack of talent. Not saying that there aren't great guitarists out there playing 7+ strings or in ultra low tunings, but for every Tosin Abasi or Fredrik Thordendal, there's a thousand talentless hacks playing the same 4 breakdowns in assorted variations of "so low it all sounds like mud" tone.
Honestly I'm okay with either one as long as Jared is playing.
Every single one of those riffs were EPIC!
The transition between the two is nice
The only tunings I play are E Standard and Drop D
+David Romero D standard is also really nice. just down tune all strings 1 whole step
I used to always play in Drop B but recently I've been playing a lot in standard tunings as well
Drop G# on a 7 string is awesome as fuck, and for E Standard, i only like 7 string guitars in standard tuning, sounds so good lol
I feel ya haha
Same. But if I want to play a certain song (for example Chevelle's Face To The Floor or Pierce The Veil's Bulls In The Bronx) I'll play that song's tuning.
I think the issue is not really what tuning you use but what you do with it. Droping the tuning doesn't really make your song heavier in any real sense. It just makes it lower in pitch. A lot of the heaviness comes from the riffs, the groove, the technique, the production etc.
I wish I had that first riff tabs so badly
