  • Being able to record 4k AppleProres on an iphone in LOG is a massive step up for a device that lives in your pocket! But how useable is the footage compared to a dedicated pro camera, and what is the secret sauce to getting the best results that will require minimal post production? Thats what I aimed to find out with this test footage. The camera on the iphone works in a really different way to a normal camera - it has a fixed f1.78 lens, and has some pretty crazy algorithms running in the background to work out exposure, white balance, and even map the tones of an image. Thats why they can produce such consistant high quality images straight out of the camera. But for a user more used to having full control - these things can also be a bit frustrating and limiting. With the addition of Prores/Apple-log, and through the use of the free Blackmagic Camera app - all of this can be bypassed, and it can be used more like a professional camera, but there is a bit of tweaking involved. Those steps are as follows:
    Filmed using: Blackmagic Camera app
Video settings: Apple Prores LT, 4k 50 frames. Shutter locked to 180 degrees, auto white balance (wouldn't normally recommend this - but the ND filter I was using seemed to have a bit of colour shift and this helped to correct it), I then fine tuned the exposure using ISO and the Vari-ND.
Picture profile: Baked in look - AppleLog-ARRI LUT by www.onelut.io/
Lens Filters: Neewer 1/2 Black Diffusion, Nisi 1-5 stop Vari ND. I had a spare 58mm step up filter sitting around that I managed to superglue onto the case(#shittyrig) allowing me to attach the Nisi Vari-ND filter I already owned. I purchased a cheap promist style filter to help take the digital edge off the footage. Its pretty cheap and nasty TBH, but good for helping get a nicer look straight out of camera - but you could use a 1/4 or 1/8 strength if you wanted to keep things a bit cleaner.
Other notes: Gave this a quick edit/grade in Davinci resolve to balance everything out. I found a +10 Magenta tint and a bit of warming up helped balance everything out. The LUT is a bit on the bluer/greener side, but when you compare it to the default Applelog-709 LUT that comes with the Blackmagic App - its definitely a lot nicer, and gets you pretty close to a nice look straight out of camera - especially when combined with some diffusion.
Hope you like the tests. Feel free to leave any tips or questions in the comments.

Haha cheers! Can confirm after a month or two the mount I superglued on hasnt budged. Was the only way to avoid having to buy a whole case/mount/filter kit

@@calebgrahamfilms ah that's great news to me because I will probably doing the same thing when my case and filters arrive. Cheers!

How was filming at night with locking the shutter speed? Did you have to push the iso real hard?

I shot a bit at 3200 - it seemed fairly clean and the noise has a nicer look than other Sony's. Its different to how the 12,800 mode works on FX6/9/A7siii - I'd say not as clean straight out of camera if its super dark and you're pushing it, but also I didnt mess with the noise reduction modes

Did you use ND-filter and Black mist filter at the same time?
