I've got a torrid with a 10 denier outside and a 7 on the inside. I used it on the PCT in 2019 for about 350 miles in Northern California. It was great! I love the color I chose, dark gray on the outside and bright red for the inside.
@@BackcountryRenegade Well, I don't think I ever wore it under circumstances where I was sweating and had short sleeves on, so I never experienced the clammines of sweaty skin against it. Otherwise, I would think it would feel clammy. U never tore it on anything. I also had a thin thermal base layer I wore when it was cold or when I was sleeping. I have an Enlightened Equipment quilt that uses that slick type of nylon too.
I Opted for the 20D outer and 7d Inner . 20D für more warmth and better durability , 7D for better moisture Transmission. Looking back im so so so happy that ive opted for the 20D outer its noticeably warmer and more wind resitant then the 10D of my GF jacket
I just to my Torrid today. Impressed! I am starting to like Enlightened Equipment's stuff. I got their quilt a month ago and was so impressed that I bought the Torrid for the PCT in 2024
Great review - and exactly my experience. I like my Torrid, good value for money. Perfect for hiking. I would just wish it didn't have the elastic closures at the waist but something adjustable. The material is shiny and indeed a bit trash-bag-like. Also a point: the Patagonia might be also OK for a city walk, the Torrid not so much. Very outdoorsy - that's why I got it....
I bought a custom torrid. Its not yet shipped. I purchased as a moving jkt. Depending on season i would like to have a down piece for idle times. Ive had dozens of Patagonia pieces all high quality. Ive used it since my 06 thru hike. The number 1 reason to choose the Patagonia over the other is the "iron clad guarantee." If you have an unlimited budget and can walk into any outfitter and replace it happily then go torrid. If not, any Patagonia licensed outfitter can replace your jacket and be sure to get a credit back, or you can get it shipped to your next stop.
Thanks for the comparison! Agreed on having an "athletic" fit version for the Torrid. I'm a bit of a beanpole and layering never fills the lower torso on my jackets before it has filled the arms and shoulders, so the bottom of the jacket can flap a bit and be come drafty on very cold days.
A huge difference in denier fabrics is the breathability as well. 20D has zero breathability, 10D almost zero, 7D is the most breathable at 35CFM. Got my Torrid in 20D outer , 7D inner to keep the wind out but still a bit breathable on the inside for static usage. The 7D isn’t any more delicate than the 10D that I’ve noticed, I also have the Copperfield wind shirt in 7D and pants in 10D. It’s all about what you want it for. If you want to hike in it every now and then in the morning or evening go for the 7D-7D for the breathability, if you want it for just warming up at camp, go 20D-7D or 10D-7D for a good mix. I’m 6’3, 160lbs tall and skinny. Went with the medium tall, 20D-7D only 9.2oz with the hood, fits almost perfect but the neck is a little tight if zipped up all the way with some base layers , not too bad though. Also, my 20D black is not very shiny like the 10D or 7D. Edit: The fabric feels very delicate but it’s much more durable than you would ever think actually.
Hello, this is exactly the reason I want to buy it - keep me warm at camp. Or when having a break, not to loose warmth. For this purpose - to pull it over hard shell during breaks, isn't 7D inner too vulnerable to be damaged by hard shell zippers? I am considering 20D outer, 10D inner... thank you
If I get one it would probably be the EE. I like the company, and I like the customization options. They may have added some options sense this review. They have, I believe, a larger hood option, and think I recall seeing a hoodless option as well. And I like the half zip version that EE offers. I’m just not convinced that I need another layer yet, but still on the fence.

I am a Floridian searching for a very easy to pack hi warmth to weight/size jacket for minimal one backpack traveling to cold places ( mostly urban but hiking and perhaps even skiing). The Torrid is also sewn in the MN, and the Climashield insulation is made in TN. I like the bulkier fit to allow wearing more layers without being constricted. I also find warm to be much more stylish than cold. And "hiker trash" does not refer to resembling a trashbag.
the biggest downside really is weight for it, 20d will be more durable, and more weather resistant, and less prone to snags and tears. if your not concerned about weight as much then 20 really has more pros.

Micro puff was one of the worst jackets I’ve bought. It was sewn through in places where the holes were so big I could hold them up to my eye and see through them. The collar was very stiff. It couldn’t be folded down so it scraped against my neck and chin every time I turned my head. I wrote it off as a dead loss and donated it to a winter coat drive. Patagonia is really good when it’s good and pretty bad when it’s bad. I have a torrid hooded jacket and a hoodless pullover. The jacket is super warm and versatile. The pullover weighs next to nothing. I wear a Patagonia nano puff jacket as a three season Northern California daily wear item.
Very different use cases. The proton Lt is an active layer for use while hiking. The torrent is waaaaaay warmer when not moving, but not nearly as breathable. Sitting still I’d say the EE is easily 20F warmer.

I am waiting for someone to do a review of the Patagonia jacket when it gets really wet. My suspicion is it will clump and be useless. A sheet of Primaloft / Climashield can be wrung - plumafill not.

From what i hear if on the newer models they trimmed it down a bit to cut out excess bulk, so it should run true to size now
Great video! Only correction is that the Torrid can be customized w/o a hood. Choose the "collar" version! EE also added a "Tall" option.

Not correct; the Torrid hip elastic CAN be adjusted. The adjustment is inside the pockets.

My Micro puff has a liner, hence more windblocking than the one you show. I bought it a few years ago.
