    I’m slightly confused about this being a collaboration as this jacket appears to be identical to the Defense Mechanisms jacket, down to the fabric and color ways, which has been available for some time now and is owned by the same people as Enlightened Equipment. Maybe I’m missing something? Regardless, happy to see it being marketed to the hiking audience as well.

      It's telling that there's been no response to this comment from Darwin/Evolved Supply Co. The jacket looks great but I hate this kind of behind the scenes shenanigans. Just be up front with us. If there's something different about it than the Defense Mechanisms jacket, tell us. If it's the same, then why isn't it priced the same, other than making an extra buck? I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the radio silence is not helping at all.

    • @Patrick-jd1dl
      @Patrick-jd1dl 10 месяцев назад

      @@StephenHutson Perhaps it felt antagonistic. I am still genuinely interested in whether I have misunderstood the design and there is some type of functional difference between them. A close friend of mine has had the DM jacket for a few years now and absolutely adores it. Also, for reference, I believe that the jacket is slightly (almost not) cheaper through DM.

    As an athletic guy with wider lats, the other jackets are most often super tight and limit my range of motion, like when I try to bring my arms forward(in a hug motion). And I can't stand the super shiny look (like the torrid), so this one looks like I could wear it anywhere.

    I like the new jacket, but I do like my "trash" Torrid too, so I see what you mean. But I kinda have some similar for everyday life. The Torrid is also as it is, part of the Thru hiker or backpacker look. So I kinda got used to it. Even though it looks strange.
    There is one major CON and actually a dangerous one too to the EE Torid jacket. And thats is when you are cold and wet.. I got hypthermic once me an dmy wife during the Across Norway hike last summer. The jacket is nearly impossible to put on when your wet.. Also I have experience that the thin material get holes quick close to a warm oven pipe or bon fire. They should have some replacement patches since Tear Aid didnt exactly make it look pretty after repair.

    • @Petychka
      @Petychka Год назад

      Very good question. I have posted a question to Darwin asking how the Torrid is different and, in particular, how it is superior to the Atom. Arc’teryx is very expensive in Australia so, if the Torrid, after international postage (US postage is horribly expensive), is equivalent but cheaper then it would be preferable to the Atom. If not, then there would be no advantage in this country and, actually, it would be at a disadvantage because we have Arc’teryx stores here that can provide service and support.

    • @Greghikes1
      @Greghikes1 Год назад +1

      @@Petychka yeh I'm in Australia too, honestly the main and only difference I can see is the slim cut, my L atom was always a bit boxy around the middle for my 80kg 188cm (104 chest) . This EE SEEMS to have addressed that..🤞

      The Outcast has a different face fabric than the Atom for durability (30D vs 20D), the cuffs are cut differently for a better fit for different size wrists, the synthetic fill is different (Climashield Apex vs Coreloft), different materials on the side panels (Polartec Hard-Faced Fleece vs Stretch Fleece), a longer droptail so the jacket doesn't ride up while wearing a pack, cycling, climbing and lastly a slightly different cut for amazing range of motion. It's also cheaper!

    I should add… how about some nice, bright colours? There is no reason why trekking gear can’t look great as well as performing well. To see how it is done, have a look at La Sportiva. And , by the way, that would differentiate the Torrid from Arc’teryx, which would go a long way to solving the significant problem of competition from that serious and strong competitor.

    Darwin, I have watched your videos for years. Gained great insights to hiking. However, teaming up with Enlightened Equipment is a problem. They denied to repair a very expensive, powder Down quilt, I bought from them when the down migrated and all I asked for was to add down on empty baffles. Willing to pay for work and additional down.
    Their answer was “we don’t do that anymore since we sold to a major company.”
    What? Deny a repair?
    Unacceptable. Add to that a very unexpected, inappropriate Woke message about LGBQ+ affiliation.
    I could care less about gender/social issues, I just want dependable, high quality camping gear. Picking sides on social issues is a business killer. I will never buy a product from enlightened again. They are dead to me.
