Thanks for the video. I hit 62000 miles on the same model you have. Looking at prices for transmission service and figured I learn to change my own oil
Do not change your own oil in the transmission on the model! You will void your warranty. It has a CVT transmission. And they are unserviceable accept. The only regularly scheduled maintenance a Subaru CVT transmission requires routinely is an inspection of the fluid.
And if you do by accident or under severe driving conditions I recommend using Subaru oil for the transmission. As Subaru has extended the warranty on these transmissions. Essentially making its customers the test driver for these relatively new transmissions. If you do accidentally remove the drain plug on the transmission (instead of the engine oil) this could be very costly. As the car may send error codes after it senses low oil level. Just trying to explain the can of worms this could be if your not familiar with Subaru CVT transmissions. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for watching.
@@NorthwindGarage wow thanks for the heads up. Just so I’m understanding, due to the type of transmission, it should only be serviced by Subaru otherwise it will void a warranty? I was looking at prices for a transmission service and differential service but everywhere was having a hard time finding the right fluid. I bet this is why. When I contacted Subaru they actually were way cheaper to service. Which I’ve never had happen when dealing with a “stealership” But as long as I am carful and pull the right plug, changing my own oil won’t cause me an issue with the warranty correct?
Do your due diligence with Subaru and pull out the owners manual. And use common sense on this mine is over 80 thousand miles and I'm gonna have the dealer do my CVT transmission service. I also bought an extended warranty. If you remove the transmission oil you WILL need to replace it correctly. And all my study says bring it to the dealer for transmission service because you need a code reader and know how and the correct oil. I'm not saying you or I can't do transmission service on this car I'm just saying it's a can of worms On the new CVTs. First you need a code reader. So that made me choose dealer service on my CVT transmission
Also remember they extended the warranty's for a reason on CVTs at Subaru. Near as I can figure they fielded them without knowing how they would hold up. Also they (Subaru) wants us all dealership junkies. I feel like my choice not to service MY CVT is the best choice out here in my driveway if that makes sense. Trying to save money by changing your own oil can potentially be a wash with Subaru CVT transmissions. Or worse it could be costly if not done properly. Thanks for watching!!
I just bought a base model 2018 with the 5 speed. It's super fun. I was under mine the other day pressure bleeding my brakes and couldn't see the oil pan. Thanks for showing me that drain plug cutout before I dropped the whole panel.
Not only good. Good enough.
Thank you sir. Some of us have dads who aren't mechanically inclined. These videos help a lot NOT to be like them and at least learn some basics 🫡
@StarrYLDaGreat Your Welcome! And Thank You for watching!!🇺🇲👍😁
