One of the best reviews/presentations I’ve seen on RUclips its quite evident you are an instructor by your communication skills and examples. thanks for the review - you’ve convinced me to pick up the D3500!

You have a great technique for explaining things without technical jargon. Hats off. Keep up the good work.

The new D3500 also has same quality, not compromised with any features. Much awaited video. Finally, I enjoyed the show. You have done great job. Hats off to PhotoGenius.

The wheel changes the shutter speed until you press the "i" button then toggle to iso. Then press enter and you toggle between iso setting. I'm not sure the wheel does iso at all. He shows how to change iso at around 11:25 in the video.
I must say, this is such a genius presentation Paul. Thanks for staying on point and not mucking it up by comparing the D3500 to other models that are outside its price point or that use different types of sensors. Your presentation skills are spot-on and the subject matter presented is informative as it is educational. But, I confess, when you demonstrated ISO settings, I felt an air of melancholy over take me when I seen the (Ilford) Delta 400 film cartridge. In my younger years, I spent numerous hours happily nestled away in my SLR darkroom. Thanks very much for this and I'm happy to become a new subscriber. Be safe mate.

Hi Paul, another very good review. I've had a D3500 for nearly 5 years now ( with a fast SD card, same as you ). It is my first DSLR and well worth the investment. I've since supplemented the kit lens beyond the 18-55 VR ( AFP ) with 10-20 VR ( AFP ), 35 DX Prime ( AFS ), 50FX Prime ( AFS ) and 70-300 VR FX( AFP ).

Sorry to have misread your question. I would go for the D5300, whilst mostly these cameras are very similar, the D5300 does offer the following advantages : 39 focus points compared to 11 on the D3500, you can use the Nikon remote (a big 👍), the LCD screen is articulated (very useful) plus if you are considering using the camera for video then the D5300 offers stereo (rather than mono) audio recording plus the option to connect an external microphone. Awesome review - clear and informative. Thank you! The link to your photo gallery no longer works however... was hoping to check out the images you took with this camera!
Have you tried using Nikon's ViewNXi and Capture NX-D softwares for editing the images? I'm curious to know if these apps have a competitive edge over Adobe LR & PS.
Lightroom is my favourite software for editing images - you can get it from Adobe (try the free trial first) for desktop / laptop and a mobile app is also available. For editing videos try Premiere Pro (also Adobe). Thanks for watching.
Great review. I actually purchased the 3400 based on your review. I don’t see a need to move to the 3509, I’m really happy with my 3400 and I can see an improvement in my pictures.
With the rush to mirrorless cameras now there is a great opportunity at the moment to pick up one of these cameras at a low price. Being F mount there are many lenses that you can use but I have DX optimised lenses for my copy. At 24 MP this camera gives fantastic images with plenty of detail and I’d say shooting in decent light gives very good colour reproduction as well; clarity and sharpness is also very good. Back in the day I had Nikon film based cameras and the ability to change ISO for any shot is a great facility to have because in film you just couldn’t do that. This guy is good, his review is well worth your time and the examples show just how good an image this camera can produce. Cheers.
It’s a cool camera, but whatever you end up buying just make sure you don’t just stay in auto - watch my videos and learn how to have fun and be more creative with your camera. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Hi, can I ask you something? I want to make video's for my youtube channel with my nikon d3500 but I need a gimbal because the footage isn't stable at all. I almost ordered the Ronin SC but then I saw it doesn't support my camera. Do you know any gimbals that work with the D3500?
I'm sorry I haven't had the opportunity to test any gimbals for DSLR cameras. I may start featuring more videography tips and reviews in future videos if I get enough interest.
Thanks for the review Paul very helpful as I’m looking to get a Nikon d3500 at Christmas time to help me learn about different parts of photography. Thanks again!
Hold it right there mate!! :D If you can get a D3400, like in my country, 200€ cheaper - THEN GO FOR IT! There's no significant change between the two, unless you really want the new shape/layout of the buttons. I won't judge you for any pick though, both will be great lenses to get you started on photography. If you're really set on the D3500 then I'd like to suggest you to keep holding off as long as you can - Maybe until January, to see if any sales might come up :) Good luck!
Thanks man, I enjoyed your review, you made concepts I've seen in other videos very simple and easy to understand. Would you reccomend this camera for a beginner? Thank you.
What is the quality of the photos? Is it better or the same as in panasonic fz 1000? Would you recommend it to the advanced amateur? This or some initial dslr model? Thank you!
Yep, you are right - the video does show some banding in the sky, however this certainly does not appear in the original images so I'm assuming that it's something to do with the way RUclips compresses the video. Thank you for pointing this out - I'm going to do some testing so that future videos the still images look clearer. Paul @ Photo Genius.

There’s a wheel on the top right to change the ISO, it’s actually faster than the D3400.

A UV filter is not necessary, but I do think they are a great way of protecting your lens from getting damaged.
Thank you
I always wanted a DSLR Camera, but i did not know which camera is the best option for me....now that i watched your video i decided to go with Nikon D3500. Thank you for your review for this Camera, you did help a lot of people to choose their Camera.
Thanks Khaled, hope you are enjoying your camera.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Sir!
Thank you for watching Jose 👍
Just got mines today can’t wait to use it thanks for this video
Enjoy your new toy 😀
I was going to buy d3500, thanks for the tutorial
You are very welcome - thanks for watching and I hope you have fun with your new camera.
Awesome review - clear and informative. Thank you! The link to your photo gallery no longer works however... was hoping to check out the images you took with this camera!
I'm afraid it's a link to the old website, sorry.
Thanks, did you review the Nikon D5300?
Sorry, have not reviews the D3500.
Just bought a refurbished off Nikon super stoked to learn how to use it.
Have you tried using Nikon's ViewNXi and Capture NX-D softwares for editing the images? I'm curious to know if these apps have a competitive edge over Adobe LR & PS.
I do not use these apps personally, would be interested to hear from anyone using them to edit images from the D3500.
Thank you for the review! Been looking for a good entry level DSLR and I will be getting a D3500 tonight after work!
You will love it.
Thanks for watching - have fun with your new camera.
You mention light room a lil bit, is that an app or software and if so can it be used in video edits?
Lightroom is my favourite software for editing images - you can get it from Adobe (try the free trial first) for desktop / laptop and a mobile app is also available.
For editing videos try Premiere Pro (also Adobe).
Thanks for watching.
You are so awesome and a great teacher. Thank you for sharing!
If I bought this camera, would I be able to attach other different lenses from Nikon ? Thanks
Yep, there's even a kit which includes 2 lens, 18-55mm and 70-300mm.
Yes - any of the Nikon lenses will fit the D3500. However with some lenses the Auto focus may not work so it's always worth asking before purchasing.
Great review. I actually purchased the 3400 based on your review. I don’t see a need to move to the 3509, I’m really happy with my 3400 and I can see an improvement in my pictures.
The D3500 would not be an upgrade - the D3400 is a great camera, better to invest in a new lens.
Have fun with your camera - thanks for watching.
How do you adjust the D3500 to take blurred background?
For blurry backgrounds watch this : ruclips.net/video/zGzOpHpukrY/видео.html
Can we connect bluthooth microphone for audio during video capture this???
How good is it when taking a pic of the Moon
It's great, but you need a 200mm lens minimum.
Thanks for watching.
You made amazing points. Love your video because it’s in-depth. I’m checking your website too. Thanks again! :)
Kneekon?
😀
subbed! such a genuine guy and review!
Thank you for supporting my channel and for the kind words.
Hello.. can I change iso quickly in Nikon d3500?
No short cut for this on the D3500. Easiest way is to press ’i’ button, then select ISO from the pop up menu.
Cheers.
Thank you Brian for watching and taking the time to comment - your feedback and kind words are very much appreciated.
Paul @ Photo Genius.
Kid asking for the money, a good touch to your video, well done.
Thank you 😀
based on your review, I am seriously thinking of buying this camera. I will watch this video one more time then make a final decision, thank you.
Do you know any gimbals that work with the D3500?
following, want to know answer too
I'm sorry I haven't had the opportunity to test any gimbals for DSLR cameras.
I may start featuring more videography tips and reviews in future videos if I get enough interest.
This is extremely helpful and well done video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Michael, really appreciate the feedback.
Paul @ Photo Genius
7:55 if you use a lower shutterspeed, does it still have a buffer then?
Buffer should not be a problem when you are shooting longer exposure.
Thanks for the review Paul very helpful as I’m looking to get a Nikon d3500 at Christmas time to help me learn about different parts of photography. Thanks again!
Hold it right there mate!! :D
If you can get a D3400, like in my country, 200€ cheaper - THEN GO FOR IT!
There's no significant change between the two, unless you really want the new shape/layout of the buttons.
I won't judge you for any pick though, both will be great lenses to get you started on photography.
If you're really set on the D3500 then I'd like to suggest you to keep holding off as long as you can - Maybe until January, to see if any sales might come up :)
Good luck!
Wow. Glad I have the D3400.
Why? I'm buying my wife one of the two.
Both are fine cameras. The 3500 did away with two features of the 3400. The video will show which features are gone on the 3500. Cheers!
Ahhh. Okay. Thank you.
Those 2 features do not make any difference in the performance, and I got my d3500 cheaper than the d3400 :)
Thanks man, I enjoyed your review, you made concepts I've seen in other videos very simple and easy to understand. Would you reccomend this camera for a beginner? Thank you.
Absolutely! - the D3500 is the ideal beginners camera and one I would recommend.
Thank you for watching, commenting and supporting my channel.
The different way people say Nikon makes me mad, I’m not sure who is saying it right
I'm not sure it matters who's right. But Nikon is a Japanese company and pronounce it the same way that I do, as does most of Europe (where I'm from).
What is the quality of the photos?
Is it better or the same as in panasonic fz 1000?
Would you recommend it to the advanced amateur?
This or some initial dslr model?
Thank you!
Well done! Upgraded my son from a d40 and he loves it! Bought him the kit with 18-55 and 70-300 w/case at local Target for 499 USD less 5%....03/17/19
Sounds like you got a great deal - hope your son is having fun with his new camera.
Thanks for watching.
just got Nikon d3500 thanks for a clear video very helpful,
Happy to help Roy, please consider subscribing for future tips, tricks and tutorials.
Got mine today, watched this video and get satisfied on what ive got. Thank you!
You will love it - thanks for watching.
Great video. Great explanation. Another subscriber you've got!
15:11 is that banding in the sky?
Yep, you are right - the video does show some banding in the sky, however this certainly does not appear in the original images so I'm assuming that it's something to do with the way RUclips compresses the video. Thank you for pointing this out - I'm going to do some testing so that future videos the still images look clearer.
Paul @ Photo Genius.
@@photogenius Thank you a lot for the reply! I was thinking it might just be yt looks like I will buy this as my first dslr camera then thanks for the video!
I’m sure you’ll love it. 😀
