  • I've been going to more than a dozen car shows each year here in Japan, and take car-spotting rather seriously, too. I've easily seen a hundred AE86s, but this is the first, and only, front-wheel-drive E80 Toyota Corolla I have ever seen in Japan.

    I still owned my 1987 Toyota Corolla FXGT, (Blue with Gold Colour), it's a Japanese Import, it's quick and a great little runner to drive. I've owned it for more than 30 years it's a "Red Top" with 7 Rib Engine. There's even a few times I've tried hard to red line the engine but it still keeps going. There are 1 or 2 if you are lucky to see the Toyota Corolla FXGT's on New Zealand's road today. It's one of the best performancing car I've ever owned, and thanks to the Toyota Company who made them. My very own pride and joy.

      I've forgotten to add that it's also a "Big Port" engine.

    An uncle of mine had one of these and he was a hoon and rolled it on a rural road while going into town. these are sick little hatches and when I was in highschool I always wanted my uncles one. They're heaps in New Zealand. Not as common as the standard corolla but yeah, very popular young male teen 1st car for doing up :) Awesome vid Dan! Shirts look great too!

    I had an 88, 2 door, not sure what engine. It was not a 4age. Peppy off the line up to 40 mph. Mine had no tach, sometimes dieseled when I turned off the key. The car was indestructable. Ran it a full shift delivering pizzas with the oil light blinking and fuel light on. It was down 3 quarts... took 3.25 to fill it according to the manual. I over revved it once, it shut off, started back up. Broke a strut mount, pothole vs. frozen strut, kept on going, blew a tire on the freeway, kept going, like nothing was wrong. Radio caught fire (my fault, Honda tape deck installed with cheap wire and no fuse,) I shut it down, aired it out, took out the radio, burned wire... started back up and kept going. Cheapest to own, maintain, fix. Nearly wrecked it in every way possible and it looked the same. 0-40 it would embarass almost anything.

      I had a 1987 FX-16 for nearly 20 years, and regret having to give it away at 199800 miles. Absolutely wonderful solid car. It would still be running strong today if I had not got too worried about the body rust damage and bought a new Toyota (which isn't as good).

    Here in the states, it was the Corolla FX16, with the 4A-GE Twin Cam four, graphics and 5 speed tranny. There used to be quite a few of 'em everywhere.
    As for deals, that Subaru Outback wagon I got was a steal, at $2000, with 167,000 miles on the clock. Loving every drive in it.

    this is a great preserved example of one of those. i can't believe it has so few rust! i only saw a little bit on the windshield frame corner, and the intact factory labels! just amazing. i saw one of those last month but it was beat up comparing it to this one, there used to be a lot of them but they are gone now.
    question of the day: 500 for the complete initial D manga? geez, that is a real bargain; i paid 100 just for the 1st issue. my latest bargain has to be the cressida, only 1100 bucks! that's what rolling shells sell for here. mine has MOT and insurance until next year. it really is a steal

      I had a Rare N.Z assembled 1985 Fxgt it had full
      Leather interior even door cards,240 km Speedo,TRD and and silica inspired,it also had foam lip on undershirts...
      I took it to repco to price wheel bearings for it and the guy there told me I had one of only 100 made and the car is not registered as an Fxgt but rather a silica,which had not come out yet....( go figure )...Also,the wheel bearings we're huge the same size as V8 car ones,he could not believe it nor I....!!!!
      Anyway I got the car taken off me by the police,and never got it back from them and I been trying to track it down ever since ..

    • @wasabicars
      @wasabicars  5 лет назад

      Not rare because of what it is or how many they made, but rare because in Japan every old car is rare. (Don't worry, you aren't the only one who doesn't believe me.) The Japanese have since forever chucked their 10-to-15-year-old car in favour of new cars. Here, a car doesn't need to breakdown even slightly before getting replaced. They generally get replaced by the time they could become unreliable. There aren't really so many wrecking yards around either, due to cars rusting to nothing in a short amount of time. Also, old cars are taxed heavily, and as hinted at, no source of parts to repair them. People with old cars here *have to be dedicated* to keeping them on the roads.

    These were all over the place in Denmark in the late 90's, early 2000's. Many a young lad with speed in their bloods first car. I believe they were just called Corolla Twin Cam, and the top model was called GT as well. 1600cc, 120hp. I have never seen a 4 door hatchback, only the sedan variant. Peppy little cars. Most of them have returned to the earth, they really haven't stood the test of time like other 80's cars, like the E30, Mercs, CRX's Civics etc.

    Cool little car... I think the regular one was called the Toyota Starlet over here back in the mid-end of the 90s and was considered to be a rather low-end budget car like the Justy, the Charade, the Swift etc... A bit too simplistic and actually never quite caught on over here... I do know that it had bigger success in some African countries along with the Corolla SW...

    My grandmother had a 1989 sedan version of that one in single cam & carby form,she traded her 1979 model Mazda 626 in for a brand new Australian built one of them.
    She gave the car to my cousin when my auntie bought her a 1996 model Corolla with air conditioning & power steering as it was aging a bit & she had carpal tunnel syndrome which was a problem with her wrists.
    My cousin wrecked her car a bit as a mate of his "tuned" (stuffed up) the carby so it ran like crap,he was the butt of all jokes in town when some people slashed the tyres & shoved condoms in the petrol tank.
    He put a few dents in it but my auntie got the whole car fixed up,he then traded it in for a 183,000 kilometre old VR Commodore S pack ute so he was had because the later model VS Commodore V6 ute with 50,000 kilometres on it was available for $15,000.
    The last time I saw that Corolla was in 1998 I think & that was in Mayfield near Newcastle in Australia,it was back to the same as what it was when my grandmother owned it.
    4 years later (2000) ,my auntie traded the 1996 model in for an AE112R Corolla with auto,air & power steering which my mother now drives since my grandmother died in 2006.
    She's done a good job of putting dents all through it,I pulled the rear quarter panel dents out then she reversed the car into a tree,I pulled the dents out of the bootlid to the point that I can bodyfill it & smooth it out,it would be easier to replace it but I managed to pull them out.
    I think the colour is evergreen mica paint & I think I would just spray it with acrylic paint because of its Low toxicity & ease of use.
    As far as bargains go, I get them everywhere, from stuff such as lawnmowers to car parts,the biggest bargain I can find is my own brain as I can figure out what a bargain is & my hands because I can put a bargain together so I do feel like I'm a lucky person !!!!

    0:54 couldn't help but grin a little bit when the 86 has Finnish text written wrong on the bonnet 😃 here in Finland, there were lots of the newer FX-gti:s on street say ~7-10 years ago. Nowadays it's super rare. As also the sedan ae-86 almost all of them has been put to rally, which pretty much explains the extinction.

    • @wasabicars
      @wasabicars  7 лет назад

      Finnish text? What did it say, and what should it say?

    • @rokerius94
      @rokerius94 7 лет назад

      WasabiCars pretty much like: Airforces
      24th (flight) squadron.
      Should be written like: Ilmavoimat Lentolaivue 24. Or: Ilmavoimien 24:s Laivue. Small misses but it looks kinda funny, and can't be read correctly. 😃 I don't mean to be rude at all, but it made me giggle a bit. Btw seems that the picture is from an Anime when I did a bit of googling. Is Finland somehow popular in Japan? That's weird.

      Yeah, man. But, it's not just this car. Japan chucks 99% of the non-performance stuff. Which is why the place is plagued with AE86s and Nissan Skylines, A60 Toyota Celica/Supras...

    New Zealand has them all, and had them all. Most of the used Japanese cars are in New Zealand, including rare models which came from japan. The sad thing is that alot of these rare cars has been crushed due to the environmental agreement with the UN. New Zealand has a trading agreement with Japan since the early 1990s. Between the year 2000 and 2010 you could find heaps of these toyota models including other Japanese rare models the New zealanders were spoilt for choice. Not sure why everyone is looking to Australia for Japanese imports as they don't have as much of a variety as New Zealand regarding rare model Japanese imports. Check out Trademe and Facebook for car sale nz locations from skylines nissan pulsar vzrs you name it its there.

    Guys I have a question. Why there are no Corollas (like the e11) getting tuned and loved like the Civics? I never really understood the huge hype on Civics and not on the Corollas. I just bought a e11 f/l G6 and I love the car. I don't think Civics are superior. I would even suggest the opossite.
    Thanks for the feedback.

    • @wasabicars
      @wasabicars  6 лет назад +1

      I actually can't answer. Your question would relate to the car scene where you live, and I don't know where that is. As for e110 Corollas in Japan, I might have seen 2 or 3 ever. The real answer to your question would be branding/reputation though. Think of it like a shoe brand. Some people value _______ brand over any other. That's why.

    • @billblackeye
      @billblackeye 6 лет назад

      Yes I got it. It might be like the iphones that everyone seems to favour. I had in mind the Osaka and Kanjo that the Civic are or used to be the no1 car that everyone used. Probably there were way more popular among all other cars and that is why everyone used them. It may has to do with branding but also with availability. I imagine Civic hatchs were in abundance whereas the Corolla hatchs were not.
      Great videos btw. Do you live in Japan at the time?
