    Strong disagree about the meal splitting "if you dont split evenly dont come to the dinner" assertion. Im in a career where i will always make significantly less money than my friends, and i can afford to go out and eat, but couldnt afford an equal split of the check. Should i never be able to go out for dinner with my friends because it is a slightly more complicated process to pay? Maybe its an American thing but at least for a European in my social circles, the idea that someone who makes less than the rest of the group shouldn't be involved in social activities that they can afford is rather classist.

    • @annagracecook
      @annagracecook 3 месяца назад +1

      American here! When my friends and I go out to eat, we all pay for our own items, we don’t split it evenly x amount of ways. Possibly a regional thing and/or age thing (I’m 26), or maybe it’s just friend group specific. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @mentalkrissie614
      @mentalkrissie614 47 минут назад

      For real! I was so disappointed by that whole conversation. If I can afford to pay for myself why should I be excluded because I don’t have the funds to constantly pay more to split whole cost of others food? Like great for them that money isn’t an issue but damn. Just like that episode of friends when Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe finally stand up about the dinner splitting costs 💁‍♀️ like why am I paying $40 when I had a $10 sandwich and water? Why should I be excluded because I can’t pay for your food too 😭

      I havent got to this part yet, but is splitting the bill an american thing? Im in canada, but we just pay for what we personally ordered. If im short on funds, ill go and order something tiny, or no food, and one drink or mocktails or whatever is more affordable. Ive never split the bill equally between the whole group? Unless maybe its pizza and everyone shares.

    • @asunbeam5479
      @asunbeam5479 7 месяцев назад +1

      i think he was saying that it makes sense when people are low on funds or at different income levels to just pay for what they order, but if you have a group of friends at a similar income level and ordering/sharing food of a similar cost, it is more convenient to just split it equally. Were you getting something different from what he was saying?

    i'm not sure about miles's perfect person status anymore after the discourse about splitting the bill. personally i think people should pay for what they eat, unless everyone is sharing everything at the table. but mostly it just matters that you are friends with a similar mindset to prevent the bill conversation becoming an argument.

    • @jemabird
      @jemabird 8 месяцев назад +3

      I'm genuinely paused after that part sitting here shocked lol. Which takes a lot to do on the internet but like wtaf?? I'm on disability right now and all my friends are the no you come pay what you can let me upgrade you sort. I don't usually let them but sometimes would if I'd feel guilty forcing them into bad seats or something for e.g. And I've tried SO many times to be like nah I'll just sit this out love you guys and they get hella upset at that suggestion. That's just so crazy to me.

    • @jemabird
      @jemabird 8 месяцев назад +2

      To add: it's been the reverse with us too and I always picked it up. You're friends not business partners like. I'm all worked up and not doing this eloquently but w.e. E.g. one of my oldest friends gave me a plus one to her wedding in the hopes it would make it easier for me to come. She didn't think I'd manage any gifts or cash at all. We did, but she basically ate cost paying me to come to her wedding in her mind. And not having me there was not even a thought to her. Again I don't expect that shit and I honestly hate it. So I get the mentality they're talking about regarding people of the same income structure being petty (though same bracket does NOT mean same expenses ahem) but the poor friends don't come to dinner thing was whoosh. I'm so turned off. And I pay for premium on patreon. This being his second pod out after leaving to go solo is idk man it might go wrong.

    • @gritt9354
      @gritt9354 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@saruhhhh I had to rewatch cause they literally then started talking about how they are okay with eating the cost and fully paying for someone else’s meal and more specifically the restaurant picked would allow them to do the whole everybody splits cause we are all sharing and I don’t think that’s craziest especially cause they explained that in their friendships they so that and then to comment he seems he’ll get something expensive when they just said they’ll eat the cost and okay with paying more is interesting

    Skipping the group dinner bc ur too poor when you could 100% just keep ur bill separate pay for whatever u can personally afford and still be included, is such a wildly privileged narrow minded take to me.
    Like I’m definitely sure there was no malice behind it. But I’m personally so glad that I have friends with money and without a lot of money where we all understand that we can still include everyone even those not as fortunate simply bc we enjoy each others presence.
    Where there’s a will there’s a way.
    I’m very positive that it’s just ignorance maybe you’ve not been in the position where you had to think creatively to make sure everyone was included but it’s not hard to do so if u just take the time to think. That is if you care enough to include everyone.
    Maybe ur not that close to ur poorer friends idk. 🤷‍♀️

      That remark made it really hard for me to finish the episode. And this isn't the first time that age was being used as common denominator for wealth. I am very happy for Will and everyone on this podcast that their lives are going well but it would be nice to aknowledge every now and then that their reality isn't a universal experience. I am also pretty sure there was no malice behind it but I would be lying if I said it didn't sting.

    • @um2913
      @um2913 8 месяцев назад +6

      @@hightidemidafternoon honestly agree on it stinging a bit. So glad you mentioned them using age as a factor bc I’m close to their age and don’t have the same privileges as them. I still have my privileges don’t get me wrong but they’re are definitely farther ahead than me in life, and where they implied someone should be financially around their age. And that’s not saying that I’m not working hard to get where there at but realistically that’s gonna take time.

    MIles, you don't even know how many times I listened to the trypod, GP, YCSWU and my ears perk up when you talk about About Time and Lucky Number Slevin. I would just like to argue about Tim being manipulative as mentioned earlier. I don't think he is bc that is actually the first lesson he learns when he finds out he can travel back in time... NO matter how many times he goes back to woo Margot Robbie (his first love) it really never worked, and when he goes back in time to meet cute with Mary, (besides the first date) it had been disastrous but they always had a connection, SO, even if he tried to manipulate time to get his dream woman, it wouldn't have worked unless it was meant to. So,, I disagree that some say he was manipulative bc, you can see after they had kids, there is no amount of manipulation or calculation that could fake the relationship they had and with the kids. A person can only pretend to be something else 3 months max. True colors will ALWAYS show.
    btw, all of your guests are as cool as you are.

    Okay yeah, coming back to this and glad that people are calling out the "splitting the check" comments. It seems like so many things that are commonplace manners in the rest of the US just dont exist in LA and its very jarring. If a friend told me I had to skip dinner because i only had enough to get salad then theyre a bad fucking friend. Love the show but lmao

    if you’re regularly getting ripped off by your friends bc you split the bill instead of paying for your own stuff… please communicate with your friends that this is not a sustainable thing for you and/or get new friends. personally i do not assume that the homies will pay for me or that i’ll pay for them; i will clarify with them way before the check arrives.
    (also it’s not just drinkers/non-drinkers price difference. any dietary stuff can have drastically different prices, like beef versus alt meat substitutions for example, or burger versus salad, one person getting entree+drink+dessert and another getting appetizer+drink, etc. unless i have a convo with my friend before any food order has been placed, like if we have not had some sort of “hey i can’t afford this right now, can you spot me and i’ll pay you back at x time” convo, then i am under the impression that i will pay for my food, and they will pay for theirs.)

      i will gladly cover the homies if they ask!! i just could not stand the Shift in this episode when miles and jon went on about having to just split the bill and “keep the peace” with friends. like no, unless everybody orders the exact same thing, then the individual order totals are going to different, and maybe it’s not As big of a deal if it happens a handful of times,, but if it happens Every Time you go out for dinner with friends… that shit adds up quick.

      I was wondering about that as well. Out of all of the guests he has had from other Headgum shows, this person has been one of my favorites, but his name isn't in the title or anything. Maybe he's one of the more popular Headgum hosts, but I'm typically not a podcast listener. The Try Guys and Perfect Person are exceptions. I know nothing at all about Headgum. So no additional info doesn't help me learn who this person is or what their show might be about or anything.

    Just relistened to the ep and the comments are taking the “ split the bill” to seriously especially after they explained how in their friend groups specifically doing meal events where they are sharing of saying the would also eat the cost for a friend

    I'm a patreon subscriber and I'm dirt poor on disability at 30 recently. First episode I couldn't finish and I usually relisten over and over during chores or anxiety, it's ma lil comfort pod. But that shit about poor friends... You done messed up with this one Miles. Regardless of intent it not only upset but hurt and confused a lot of us cause that seems so opposite to you usually. I'm pissed but also care and you just went out on your own, so don't ignore this mistake, make sure to address it and have it be a blip and a learning experience rather than having it alienate a big chunk of your followers just as you start out on your new journey.

      All your comments essentialy saying him going on his own is bad is so weird especially cause this pod was always his own also I think instead of making YT comments maybe dm him in a nicer tone cause he didn’t say the worst thing in the world and why would you feel wrong when he said split the bill it’s what a lot of friend groups also that was them just talking about their situations and less about the caller

    I’m probably gonna be the first and only shady comment because Miles Nation is splendid and kind but this guy talked my ear off.
    Nothing against him, obviously idk him, and he’s all positivity but goddamn. When you add the cold open on Patreon it was nearly 25 mins of not-that-worth-it tangents.
    I think it’s just that some guests get into their rapport with Miles and aren’t as familiar with the show as they could be so they get excited and forget that the show is not a chat/interview show, and that it’s supposed to be more caller oriented.
    But I know this isn’t about me, and obviously there’s worse issues to have so, please don’t read into this comment too much. I just needed to express that I’m a bit exhausted after this ep. 😅 I understand that this is fully a “me” issue and this is not actually a criticism, I’m just whining, because I did still enjoy him as a guest.

      I hear you tbh. I actually really enjoyed this episode with Jon but I did find myself wishing there were more callers, and I think it would be good for the patrons to be getting either an extra caller (instead of a cold open) or just cut more of the building rapport convos out for the patrons so it goes more directly into the call. But there are some eps, like the one with Zack a couple weeks ago, where I was like, damn they've been talking for a while.
      But at the end of the day this is Miles' show and ofc I support it! I appreciate that we can have these constructive convos 😊

      Maybe he could do part 2 with his guests where they just answer more calls because they've already been introduced in a previous ep
