      It would pull even better with a proper manual trans. The stall on the converter for the 5-speed automatic used here is significantly higher than peak engine torque, so most of the engine's useable power is just wasted deep frying the transmission in its own oil. Every time the truck stalls out on the incline it's with the engine pulling ABOVE peak torque; a manual transmission would not have this problem.

    It would pull way better with the 10-speed manual. Converter slip is a major issue with the 5-speed auto used in the testing. The engine's peak torque hits so low that the converter hasn't 'stalled' yet, and that means the engine can be pulling its heart out and the truck isn't going anywhere because all that torque is just deep frying the transmission in its own oil instead of moving the rig.

  • @shoryuag
    @shoryuag 6 месяцев назад +3

    I think we’ve settled the torque or horsepower debate in this video. It’s power; it’s always been power. You can see it when the truck stops being able to pull as the torque rises. If torque was for pulling, it’d keep going. The only reason the truck was able to keep going as long as it did is because the torque converter was effectively giving the engine shorter gearing as it slipped. That doesn’t mean more wheel torque though, because it would’ve done even better as the RPMs fell and the engine torque rose, but it didn’t. With manual transmission, the engine just would’ve stalled.
    It was going to stall on the last pull, and you can tell by how quickly the RPMs started to drop before the nitrous kicked it, giving it ~250 more hp. The only torque that was expressed here was the torque the frame experienced as it twisted because it wasn’t stiff enough to handle the load once the wheels stopped expending the energy in the system onto the road. Wheels aren’t really turning, engine doesn’t want to stall yet, so something has to give; that thing was the frame, and it twisted more at higher power levels, not torque.
    Edit: readability

    • @SylasG
      @SylasG 6 месяцев назад +2

      The converter slipping means the torque is not being applied to the drive axle. Failure of the converter.

    • @shoryuag
      @shoryuag 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@SylasG What the converter was doing was giving the engine its best shot at moving those loads. Otherwise, there would have been a stall, clutch slip, frame twist, or some other expression of the engine not being able to turn the wheels anymore. If you substituted the word power for torque, I’d agree with you on your first sentence. The converter didn’t fail, though; it was doing its job.

    Great example of how a diesel engine can do a shit ton of work, but very slowly. It has to do it slow, or it won't do it at all.

    Should’ve put a manual transmission or locking converter, lots of torque loss through the converter

    • @shoryuag
      @shoryuag 6 месяцев назад +1

      I disagree. With a locking converter or clutch, the engine just would've stalled. With the torque converter, the engine was able to keep trying to move the load, because of the torque multiplication/lever lengthening, instead of bogging and stopping because it didn't have enough power for the load. If you want to see an example of that starting to happen, the last run has a manual transmission and the most power. It was going to stall if the nitrous hadn't kicked in and added another 250hp. You can tell because of how quickly the RPMs dropped.
