[2001 Toyota Camry Review] Regular Car? Pffffft... You mean, AWESOME CAR!

  • It's a crying shame how that OTHER channel (which claims to review "regular cars") has failed to film a review of the most "regular car" of all time! Hey buddy, you keep gallivanting around Asia driving Kei cars (which are the FARTHEST thing from a regular car, BTW).
(To be fair, Hoovies Garage DID already review this car's predecessor [XV10]. But that generation was still a bit buggy. Toyota really ironed out a lot of the rough edges with this generation, making this truly the KING OF CAMRYS!)

Whenever I feel like I’m ready to sell my 1997 Camry and get something more fun, I run in to one of these videos and realize how great of a car I already have. When a car takes better care of you than you take care of it, you’ve got a keeper.

Could always see if I could get one imported from a nearby country. Big fan of Toyota, the fact that you still see them on the roads today while their competitors have been sitting in scrapyards for years is proof enough of their quality. Their competitors are only usable if they've driven below 100k miles and have been sitting in garages with semi regular maintenance for years.

Pre-2010s Toyota was peak Toyota in my opinion. I’m in a 2005 Sienna LE AWD, 116k. And if I ever do want Apple CarPlay, it’s easy enough to swap out the head unit. As for safety, it’s still modern enough to feature curtain airbags all around and it even has a factory anti-theft system.

I've owned just about every brand of American car there is and several foreign cars as well . . . Mercedes, Honda, Fiat, Subaru, VW, BMW, Austin Healey, Austin Devon, Isuzu, even a Jaguar. I recently bought a 1997, Camery 2.2L. This car beats every other car I've owned hands down. I like working on cars and I used to spend a lot of time doing just that (think Jaguar), so when I got this car I looked for things to "improve". But there isn't ANYTHING. Well I did spend about an hour replacing the shocks. It has 120000 miles on it and it runs like new. Some times when I'm stopped at a light I think it's stalled because I can't feel or hear the damn motor! The car is boring as cable tv, but that's exactly its best quality. When I drive it I don't have to worry about being stranded somewhere, heck I'm thinking of cancelling my USAA roadside service. The cruse control works, even the power sunroof works. Oh, and it has ABS brakes. Everywhere I look I see Camry's, hundreds of them, and now I know why. I have a feeling this car will running happily along well after I'm 6 feet under.

Gen 3s were better imo, being developed from the LS400. Gen 4s were good but I suspect went through some rough spots initially. (2001 a perfected year)
ABS not needed. Just be the best driver on the road.
Impalas and Regals (3800ii) weren't too bad once the coolant issues were fixed. Transmission wasn't up to snuff with the 3800.

@@manderson9593 I'm not so sure about that I have a 3d generation Camry a 1995 ,and a 1998 4th generation Camry and the so far the 1998 seems to be easier to work on, example try removing the egr valve to clean it on the 95 not so easy on the 98 is easy and ignition coils are cheaper than buying a genuine distributor. But I'm sure the 3d generation Camry is awesome unfortunately for me mine already had a lot of issues when I bought it from my former mechanic I didn't know Jack about fixing cars when I bought it , but because of the reliability of the 95 I bought the 1998 and have learned so much about working on this toyotas from watching RUclips videos that I no longer need a mechanic. Too bad I can't save my 95 it has too many issues after 10 years I have to let him go I'll still drive it as my backup car because it did pass the smog check lol,but by the next smog check I'll retire him for ever, my 98 year on the other hand has 110 thousand miles and drives like new has zero leaks and nothing but new fluids, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid and there's so much preventative maintenance I've to it it should last me at least 20 maybe 30 years lol I'll be 90 by then lol.

These are great cars, I own a '99 with a 4 cylinder. Bought it with 115,000miles and it now has 211,000 . They are non interference engines, which means if the timing belt breaks it will NOT destroy engine. I actually changed the timing belt and 2 pulleys, and water pump when I bought it. The aftermarket water pump ended up leaking years later. My advice now is buy your repair parts at Toyota. I did and the prices are very good. Got a really great water pump assembly, and changed the belt again, they're not expensive, one word of advice is, when you go to replace those parts, replace the oil pump gasket. They're a few dollars at Toyota and easy to replace, they're common to leak, you can find videos on RUclips about them. Oh, if your starter solenoid ever starts to click, Toyota sells a repair kit for that, they're designed to be repaired with it. The contacts wear out. That's another benefit of the dealer, they KNOW Toyotas. Happy travels.

The 2.2 L engine from 1997 to 2001 is very possibly the best four-cylinder engine ever made in history of automobiles when it comes to reliability and good performance. Now here’s the clincher, if you don’t mind doing what I refer to as a mechanical intervention, you can put struts on all four wheels of these cars and also new swaybar bushings and fix any other little details, and for about 1000 bucks you can get that car to drive Basically as good as a brand new car. I did it to my 2001 Camry, and it drives wonderfully.

@Roberto Mundo My timing belt reference is from "Gates Belts". They show the 1997 (from memory) to 2006 (both the 3.0 & 3.3) as interference engines. I have seen these same engines shown as non-interference in other places. The 1996 and earlier V6 are shown as non-interference. But in any case, you never want to bust a timing belt. Not going to move without it.

My first car was a '97 Camry XLE V6. Had everything. Bought it in 2000 used when I was 18. 15 years and hundreds of thousands of miles later, someone rear ended me bad. Eventually it had to be junked. Got over 309,000 miles out of that thing. Would it have made it to 400,000 otherwise? No question in my mind. Now I have an Acura. Great car. But I'll always have a place in my heart for the '97 - '01 Camrys.

    What killed my 1998 camry?
Was it the time that I lost both the alternator and power steering belts as they had greatly exceeded their service lives?
Was it the fact that all my brakes had managed to last so long that they were literally vibrating?
Was it the fact that I regularly neglected all maintenance as I felt broke at the time?
Was it the time I didn't change the oil for 20000 miles?
No... It was when someone ran a stop sign in front of me as I was driving into the sun one evening and I plowed right into them. It had lasted 18 years.
But my dad still has his, and kept it when upgrading the other camry which was a 2005 to a new car.

I had a 1998 Toyota sienna and offroading didn't kill it, my lack of maintenance didn't kill it, what did (in spirit) is when I was tired of driving it and wanted a new car so I left it in the DI thrift store parking lot with keys and title on the driver seat.
290k miles of too much reliability.

I’m sorry for your loss. I have a 1997. I haven’t taken the best care of it, because money is also very tight. Didn’t change oil for 12,000 miles once. Drove it for a week without power steering because I needed my next pay check to get the parts for repairs. Drove it on a shitty alternator for weeks by charging my battery at Autozone frequently and maintaining 3,000 rpm in neutral at red lights so it wouldn’t die on me. I took it off road because I’m an idiot and got it stuck on a muddy hill. I’m approaching 200,000 miles and I’ve done the bare minimum to keep the car functional. It may be the most “basic” car you can have, but that car has treated me amazingly and I’m thankful for it. Amazing car.

My 97 has 255,000 on it and the 4 cyl runs great. Just like he says, no cracks in the interior, seats look like new. It did develop a valve cover gasket leak behind the coil packs, a bit of a PITA to fix, but not that big a deal. And, the drivers side door handle finally failed - the plastic just fatigued and broke. The A/C works fine with no recharges. Other than that, just regular maintenance and it starts every time. A GREAT car that has exceeded my expectations!

I've seen many 2018 Camrys with 150k-180k miles with absolutely no issues or issues with the interior.. all the parking sensors still work/Radar cruise control and Lane keep and automatic braking and Bsm sensors all still work. Many people were saying the transmission will not hold up but they've been using these 8 speed transmissions on Lexus products for some time and those have been proven.

1999 2.2L with 248,000 miles. Only issues since new: Starter, VSV valve, blower resistor, oil leak from the distributor block off plug, oil leak at the oil pump, exhaust flex pipe rusted (twice), valve stem seals wore out, sway bar end links, valve cover spark plug tube gaskets leaking, wiring broke at the hinge on the LH side of the trunk, and an ignition coil failure. Parts are plentiful and cheap for this car so if you do your own wrenching, it’s very economical to own.

The 5S-FE (2.2 4-cyl, found in the 92-01s) are pretty much bullet proof. The later ones (97-01) had sludge problems mostly because Toyota stated you can go 7500 miles between oil changes with conventional oil. The previous owner of my 99 put 160k on it using the OCI but I was amazed to find no sludge when I popped the valve cover. Keeping it on a 3000 mile OCI now with Toyota filters. Just did the radiator, struts, springs, and tires. At this rate I expect it to outlive the cockroaches.

I had a 99 camry with 2.2 4 cyl, and it ran flawless. Never an issue other than needing to change the shocks at around 180k miles along with Dino oil changes every 3k and tires. 240k miles rolled around and during acceleration the engine threw a rod. No warning, no funny engine noises beforehand, the rod just broke. Was an awesome car and i still miss it.

I had a 91 Camry. Got is with 187k and drive it another 115k before I sold it 4 yeard later for more than I paid. Mechanics would often ask to buy it from me. Very little hassles. Always drove straight. No shake, no shimmy, even at high speeds through the desert southwest. A/C held its charge and blasted cold air. Power everything still worked. I'd always recommend a Camry.

I just bought a 2001 Camry with 260000 kilometres, two and half moths ago in Australia for $2500, then $400 for 4 new tyres, broken down in one month for a water pump replacement for $720, $150 for driving belt replacement, water overflow leaking, but not yet replaced, when over heating, pouring water into radiator regularly. Power steering oil leaking, but no effect for steering, $100 fuel of one tank can run 480 kilometres. I v run 8000 kilometres since purchase. It’s an amazing car, driving smooth, powerful and quiet, I don’t know how long it can last. My previous Holden wagon last 160000k, then engine blowed up by over heating. My previous Ford mondeo last 190000k, then dual clutch transmission fucked up, now I realised Toyota is best lasting and reliable car. I would like to run my 20years Camry till the end.

This car had one of the easiest alternator change I’ve ever done, lots of room under the hood with the 4 cylinder and sat right on top. Compared to my 96 Maxima V6 which needed to dismantle the whole front end to get to anything.

I bought a 2001 Camry with 122,000 miles on it for $2200. It’s going on 6 years now and im still driving it. It now has over 180,000 miles.
I’ve done minimal work like a new radiator and a cv joints but it’s been an awesome car. I’ve driven it back and forth from SE Alabama to central Texas several times. It’s comfortable and rides smooth. It was the best $2200 I’ve ever spent.

I have a 1999 Camry that had 199k when I got it, it has 337k now and I've never changed the tranny fluid. The trans fluid looked burnt and had shiny metallic particles showing on the dipstick when I bought it, but I knew better than to mess with an old transmission that's still working on old fluid 😂
