My favorite part of paper mario as an RPG is the low numbers. A lot of RPGs start you off doing random 4 digit numbers of damage and healing these days, and it's meaningless padding. The overall low numbers throughout the game means that every single number actually matters, which is both more intuitive and cleaner design.
I really liked the high numbers that were done with Earthbound, where with the mechanic of HP scrolling, you had no chance to eat food in time before you die at low levels, but high levels become very strategic, you have to manage your whole team to attack and heal while you're pelted with Elite Starmen using PSI Starstorm and heavily damaging your whole team, and you actually feel strong hitting enemies with 500 damage, but they're scaled up with you so they can still be a good threat. Great example of high numbers without having them be padding
I do agree with your point, but what RPG starts you with 4 digit numbers of damage? In general most good JRPGs, especially Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, start in the double digits and then slowly raise so that you get used to the increasing numbers.
I know this has nothing to do with PM, but this is always why I just couldn't ever get into Yugiho when I was already so into Magic. Paper Mario is to Magic the Gathering as JRPGS is to Yugiho. Everything does like 1500 damage or more. Like why?
In my honest opinion, Paper Mario has one of the best soundtracks of all time. If you look at the full tracklist, they put an insane amount of effort into it. There are little songs that only play once or twice, but they still put them in. Every major boss has a unique track. They could have just made a generic boss fight song, but they wanted to make sure every major boss had a special feel to them. One of my personal favorites is the Koopa Bros. battle music which has a sound effect in it that sounds like they're cackling at you. It's amazing. The soundtrack was way ahead of its time and it was super memorable and well composed. I love this game so much. It is just so well rounded and super fun!
MistressZelda If you love paper mario, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode. It beefs up the difficulty, making every enemy deal 2x damage and changing lots of encounters to have more and/or tougher enemies. For example, you'll fight a Clubba or two as early as the Koopa Bros. Fortress. There are also new badges and boss mechanics, and a hidden boo in Peach's castle kitchen lets you skip the prologue. The Dry Dry Desert is made a lot more interesting with sand dunes and other obstacles blocking certain paths. There are other QoL changes like being able to answer Chuck Quizmo's questions all in a row until you either miss one or reach questions about parts of the game you haven't reached. In this video specifically, Snoman complains that the star powers weren't very useful. This hack's extra level of challenge changes that. In Pro Mode, you need every opportunity and advantage you can get, and Paper Mario's awesome battling, leveling, badge, star power, and partner mechanics are pushed to an entirely new level. You HAVE to play it if you like Paper Mario. Just look up the Star Rod Discord and find an invite. I don't think there's any new music though. rip
My favorite thing about Paper Mario is just the world Intelligent Systems had laid out for the portly plumber. It’s so fleshed out and feels so alive. The towns and communities are all well established and everyone in them has something interesting to say. I also like that the enemies you see in most Mario games aren’t all bad here. Most of them are actually pretty friendly. It’s only those who are loyal to Bowser who are considered “bad guys”. It’s a world where all these different peoples and species live together in harmony. Speaking of Bowser’s baddies though, I like their portrayals a lot too. When you talk to the Koopatrols as Peach in the the Chapter 6 interlude, they all act like regular joes just doing a day job. They slack off, they complain about how hard they’re worked, one guy even rants about his Clubba co-worker slacking off and not letting him clock out of his shift. The games are just so full of character and personality that it’s crazy. Apologies for my long comment; this game just amazes me from every angle. It’s one of the best games out there in my opinion.
While it's in the sequel, I personally love how Rougeport acts as a melting pot of so many different races living together. It's a type of detail that modern RPGs that try to build a more serious world can sometimes lack.

Not to mention he has funny and entertaining dialogue for EVERY SINGLE enemy, area and NPC. "Oh, do you mean every major town and npc sprite-" No. EVERY SINGLE area and NPC. That means different and unique dialogue for EACH red toad and EACH area of the desert. So he's basically Navi, but with a 1.000.000x more personality.
I love the first 3 Paper Mario games. Paper Mario felt like an evolution of Super Mario RPG's timed-actions during turn-based gameplay, with a reworked Partner system, badges that altered the way you play, and traversal puzzles that made good use of both Mario and his partner's abilities. Paper Mario TTYD built off the last game's originality, charm, unique environments and scenarios and gameplay mechanics with better hardware to enhance the framerate and visuals. A lot of effort went into contextualising story events that affect the gameplay, and it made the world feel that much more lived-in, from character designs that set apart the denisens of Mario's world from one another, to the reasons and circumstances behind partners joining your team. The crowd that watches you during battles added yet another dynamic layer to the already fresh take on turn-based gameplay, with hecklers throwing dangerous weapons at you if you don't deal with them fast enough, and supporters throwing coins or healing items. The more excited the crowd gets, the more Star power you earn, and getting a large crowd behind you could greatly help during the more rigorous battles. Super Paper Mario was... well, an odd game to say the least. It wasn't really the same type of game as the previous two, yet it still had unique level themes and scenarios the franchise is known for, as well as an emotional storyline, and one of the best rogues-gallery I've seen in a Mario game. I also love how said villains weren't just evil for the sake of it, with the charasmatic yet sympathetic Count Bleck doing what he did out of inconsolable grief and vengeance, and Nastasia willing to do anything if it means pleasing Bleck. And of course, my absolute favourite Mario villain, Dimentio. Initially introduced as a minion, I was shocked just to see all unpredictable ways he'd behave, from fighting Mario to helping him, to demolishing an entire world, and and even temporarily killing him at one point. And that's not even getting into the revelations at the end. I also love how throughout the game, you have a painful reminder of how much danger the world is in, with a black hole growing ever larger in the hubworld as the game progresses. It's such an effective way of making the player empathise for the characters, and while the general art style and character designs left a lot to be desired, the villains, story and worlds themselves more than made up for it in my opinion.

With the antiguy, there was actually another option to get the treasure that you didn't mention. If you have a Lemon Candy in your inventory (Cake Mix + Lemon), he'll gladly trade you the treasure for it. Russ T. actually hints at this fact if you talk to him after making a certain amount of progress in the game. :3

Chapter 6 is great for sure, but chapter 7 is my jam! Every area is a joy to visit, with beautiful landscapes (for the N64) incredible music, plot relevance in the form of Starborn Valley, the ingenious puzzles of Shiver Mountain and Crystal Palace and the epic showdown with the Crystal King. The “penguin murder mystery” is also a hoot as it comes out of nowhere and the ending is just a hoot!
Great analysis of an incredible game! That's why I love this channel. You always put into words how I feel about some of the best games from my childhood
I played TTYD as a kid and only later as an adult went back to play the original. Both are FANTASTIC games, but playing them in this order is probably ill-advised. Not for story reasons (they're pretty disconnected), but because TTYD expands so much on the concept that going back to the original feels like the step-back it is. It's also incredibly apparent how much was flat-out copy-pasted into TTYD. Partners, locales, abilities, etc. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but it's really interesting. Overall they're both phenomenal games that are totally worth playing in 2018

@@fiftyskoopaklub2982 I was making a joke to the fact everyone is acting like it is now, as if that's always been the inception. With TTYD copying more, sure I agree there, but it also doesn't change the fact 64 copied as well. Just because one happens to do it more doesn't mean it doesn't exist to another. Especially when their copies in both instances can be pretty notable And this is no shame to either game, I love them both equally and can't choose I grew up with them after all. I just hate the stigma attached to this fanbase and how somehow 64 is just now the best reaching from said stigma. lol
Random Moron that is a real valid request! They sort of did, it just was before you entered the final chapter. So much to do, but you can't go back after bowser. Definitely a complaint from me as well. TTYD fixed this which is nice

It's definitely Chapter 4: Trials in the Toy Box. It can get a bit repetitive going in and out of the toy box, but I loved every second I was inside it! What kid didn't want a toy box that could go into ANOTHER WORLD full of toys and the like to play with? All the varieties of Shy Guys, having to thwart the General Guy's plan to take down Toad Town, that Anti Guy fight, MF'n Watt? I'm getting chills of anticipation just thinking about getting there on my next playthrough! Woo, thanks. I've wanted to talk about Paper Mario for a long time now.

Goombario isn't useless... I love how his tattle ability makes the HP of all enemies you've used tattle on going forwards, it serves the same purpose as the Peekaboo Badge, without you needing to trade Star Pieces for the badge and wasting 3 BP to equip it.
I think the main beauty about the first 3 Mario RPGS (Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Thousand Year Door) is just how polished they are. They have some things that could be better, but there is nothing that can be called legit bad, they are nearly perfect games. Mario RPG could have better platforming control, but you get used to it, and both Paper Marios could better some things, but only slightly. I personally like TTYD the best, but probably just because it's one of my nostalgia games. I replay it every couple of years. Super Paper Mario is nice, and I haven't played the other 2, but the first 3 really are a gold standard for RPGS for me. They aren't overly long, every battle is fun, grinding isn't really a thing in them, characters are memorable and there is all kind emotions and tones throughout them. Damn I wanna play one now. Thanks
Goombario is hardly useless. Charge + Multibonk will wreck almost any non-spiked or non-ceiling enemy in the game. It can even make short work of bosses. His Tattle ability is also very useful in and out of battles. Once you Tattle an enemy their HP bar will always be shown which will eliminate the need to equip the Peekaboo badge.
Goombario is NOT useless. Besides Tattle being essential, (who wants to waste 2 BP on Peekaboo?) Charge is unbelievably broken. You can shred a lot of bosses by letting him charge up a few turns because there’s no limit to how many times he can use it. His power increases by two each time, so after you charge him like eight turns he’ll dish out 48 damage with Headbonk if he’s at Ultra Rank! Sure, he can’t hit spiked or electrified enemies but just imagine how easily he can win boss fights for you. Especially against the Super Blooper.
the first time i ever played paper mario as a little kid, i thought it was a great idea to put all my levels into health points, and had almost zero badge points and a few flower points, and i will tell you right now that made the game 10 times harder than it should have been. And then the second time i played through it a few years later, i distributed my levels evenly in health, flower, and badge points, and the game was a lot easier, but still as enjoyable due to how detailed the game's environment is.

I've put most of them into BP, a few in HP, and like 1 or 2 in FP. I just use the BP for extra health and fp badges though.
That reminds me of the first time I went through M&L SS. I didn't realize that the wheel for additional points could be moved down to different stats, so I just took the 1 to 2 extra HP for every single level up I had. Sure didn't help in the end, for sure.
I just want to say this is one of few games that have aged marvelously, I mean seriously, I played this game not expecting much and it blew me out of the water and I freaking loved it! This game has loads of charm, life, and surprising difficulty of the end and a battle system that doesn’t cloud the screen with numbers, that makes you think everything out, it’s truly amazing.
I love this game so much, one of my favorite things is how Bowser is actually intimidating. Sure he's still a goofball at times but his plan was nearly fullproof on paper (pun not intended), and he actually beats Mario in the beginning. I hope you do a similar video of this for TTYD and SPM.
I remember as a kid completing the intro battle for the first time and watching Mario get destroyed by Bowser. Was thinking "daaamn this is so messed up" lol
Paper mario as a kid... was my absolute favorite game. I had to have rented and beat at least 6 different copies and multiple times for each over the years. I loved it so much that it was absolutely my favorite game of all time. I remember just being an absolute master of this game helping a friend beat junior troopa after going back to toad town on the whale unprepared.... WITH ONE HP. I don't think any other game has ever come so close to my heart as the game I actually idolized, or as a game that seemed MADE for me. As I grew up I loved thousand year door too but THIS game. The first paper mario it still just stands above almost all other games for me and I honestly kinda forgot that until I watched this. It really brought me back to a time where I wholeheartedly loved video games. Great video
12:23 All the little details, eh? My favorite part of the game isn't really a huge one. It's the sidequest in Club 64 where you help a diva (a Toad named Chanterelle) regain her singing voice by helping the Master Poet get Lyrics and a Melody. But then, once you complete the sidequest, the devs went the extra mile by giving her a song to sing, and you can listen to it any time you want by revisiting the location. This was something I just thought was cool back then, but upon revisiting this years later, I realized that games just don't have flavor like this that often anymore. Normally they'd reuse a song or remix something that exists elsewhere in the game or something, so for such a meager sidequest to have a song like this absolutely warms my heart, and it's why Chanterelle is straight up my favorite NPC in all of Paper Mario.
I loved exploring in this game just as much as I loved battling and progressing. As a young kid I found this side quest and I thought it was so cool! I replay paper Mario more than any other game and every time I replay it I just HAVE to do the koopa koot quests
Oh man, I remember borrowing Thousand Year Door from my friend when I was a kid and I just fell in love with it! I absolutely agree with what you said about the smaller numbers refining the battle system. And the partners in the first 2 games are just so good!
I... I don't know what to say. I don't know what part is the best. I just love everything! Everything you said, I agree with it. This game... I can't describe how much I love it, what it means to me. I started playing it on an emulator last year, and while at first I was kind of iffy, on my second try a day later, I loved it to death. The writing, the gameplay, the music, the asthetic. This game... I can't express how amazing it is. I just love it. I have had little time to play it with school work, but I play it so much during my free time that I've still managed to 100% it almost 4 or 5 times. Again, this game means so much to me. I really wish Nintendo didn't change Paper Mario into a watered down action adventure game, strip it's story. I can't stress it enough, the original Paper Mario is something special. (I've never played The Thousand Year Door, we had it on our old GameCube before we gave it away and buried TTYD in a time capsule, but that was when I was in that age where I thought I was too old for anything that would appeal to kids, even though I was like 4. I regret that.)
Man it feels like it's been forever since I played these games but I have so many fond memories of this game and its sequel from when I was a kid. One thing I remember is using watt for my first time during the final boss fight and discovering how useful she is after losing over and over. Can't wait for the next video and I hope once you are done with these you go check out intelligent systems' other big franchise.
I love Paper Mario so much, I remember so many details about it and the soundtrack also is amazing! My favorite part is definitely the Shy Guys in the toy box, it was just such a diverse and fun chapter! I also really love the Piranha Plant boss, he was super challenging. Sushie doesn't get enough love though, that was my go-to partner! There are so many subtle things that you mentioned that I think are just so well-thought out, like reading Luigi's diary, the fortune tellers, and even that weird pig thing lol! Now I wanna go play again, I'm so happy that others love it as much as I do.

I'm super-excited for this series. The total decline of the Paper Mario-franchise by Nintendo deciding to rip out the entire foundation of what made this series great is one of the most tragic things that happened during the Wii U-era in my opinion. Just thinking back at the travesty that was Color Splash makes me really sad, not because it's a bad game, but because of the message it conveyed, with Nintendo basically confirming that the style of the original games is dead.
@Pen Bashiro, MD Origami King is the same way. I hated Sticker Star so much I traded it in to GameStop and skipped Color Splash because it was the same thing but even worse thanks to atrocious backtracking and slowed battles. Origami King is definitely an improvement, but Nintendo seriously needs to accept when they’re wrong and just bring back what worked instead of being selfish dictators like Olly.
Thank you so much for doing a video on Paper Mario! This game has and probably will always be my favorite game of all time. So many games provide amazing amazing characters, settings, soundtracks, and mechanics, however very few games can deliver on everything. Paper Mario (in my opinion) is always going to be the gold standard for what a game should be, and it is very obvious the team responsible for creating this masterpiece truly sank their hearts into it.

Personally I still found Super to have a lot of charming elements even if the combat and sometimes the level pacing were a little weird at times. Also Color Splash from what I have seen absolutely is brimming with great humor and gorgeous anesthetic. Although the lack of character and an engaging battle system does seem to hinder it, I would say it still seemed like a fun time. Of course returning to the roots of what made this series so amazing would be a lot more favorable with the added depth and unique characters the series had.
Paper Mario is my favorite game of all time. Everything about it is just so good. The writing, the crazy characters, the soundtrack (especially the ch 7 areas), the combat strategy and replayability with different badge setups, the unique locations and secrets. And of course, it’s sequel TTYD is one of the best sequels to a game I’ve ever experienced. Taking everything that made the first so memorable and improving on it. I hope Nintendo goes back to the first two at some point. These new titles have so little substance.
My favorite thing about this game was the exploration for hidden items throughout the world. I think I had 3 damage dodges with 2 defense plus badges. it's kind of op since no one can hurt you lol
I wish they’d make a Paper Mario 64 remake. It’s my favorite Mario RPG and I’ve played it over at least 10 times and it never gets boring 😂. Please Nintendo make my dream come true!
I played it on my OpenEmu on my Mac. I fell back in love with it all. All of this made me remember the 1990s-2000s. Thousand Year Door really was a challenge though.
Hey Snoman, I've been watching your channel for a long while now and Paper Mario is absolutely one of my favorite games of all time. I grew up with this series, and I've had an extremely stressful work day today, and getting to watch this video and finding out you'll be doing some more on the Paper Mario series made it a good bit better. I love your videos, and I'm looking forward to everything else you have to say about these games :)
Emma B. If you love paper mario, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode.
So glad to see the return of my favorite youtuber. I cant wait for the good game design on ttyd! (Also super paper mario is really good, people are just salty that they changed the combat)
Personally was not salty they changed the combat, I was much more salty about the large amount of bad level design, unbalanced characters, and incredibly inconsistent difficulty
I for one welcomed a new playstyle for Paper Mario, but Super Paper Mario had some major issues with level design and pacing in my opinion. That aside, it has the honor of featuring the best story of the entire Mario Franchise, wonderful characters, fun base platforming and puzzle solving, great bosses (albeit a bit easy), great music, and a lot of creative alternate ideas for a normal 2D Mario game. I'd welcome them coming back with a similar gamestyle, but perfected. As if the next Paper Mario was the TTYD to Super like TTYD was to 64.
I am deifnrily with you on the music at least. Upon retrospect though I don’t see what is so special about the story, it’s well written to be sure but I can certainly think of 2 or 3 other Mario games with better stories
Dracomut Bad level design? I strongly disagree. Maybe in a very few small sections. I know it's more of an RPG, but in terms of raw 2D Mario platforming SPM is my favorite of the bunch. And I fully welcome the difficulty, Mario games aren't usually known for their difficulty. The difficulty in the first 2 games wasn't extremely consistent either to be fair.
@@TheDaemonDD It can be fined tuned I agree, but if the problems mostly pertain to Merlee's Mansion, Whoa Zone, the Cragnon trials, Sammer Guys' trials in Chapter 6 and Overthere Stair, that is where I disagree, because I think they're "annoyance" we're purposeful for the experience.
I love your Paper Mario videos, my fav game series from my childhood, up to TTYD. Hope you keep making more of these. I love the scenery, the bosses, the dialogues, and how simple it is.
I'm going to throw this out there, personally similar to other series currently like 3D Mario, Mario Party, Mario Tennis etc I think Nintendo might (the emphasis is might) knock the next Paper Mario game out of the park. Personally I think the first words uttered by a Treehouse employee will be "we are harkening back to the original Paper Mario on N64 & TTYD that fans loved back in the day". The game itself I think will follow the same mindset a lot of games they have been producing have recently which is let's take the original formula and add to that in new, unique ways. They will probably bring party members and badges back, maybe even a hub world and the traditional way of selecting moves in battle. I firmly believe that they will do this with their mindset on how they approach fresh new games in long running franchise currently.
Steven Higgins If you're itching for some classic paper mario gameplay, but with a fresh new spin, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode. I would LOVVEE a thousand year door video! :D It's my favorite game of all time!! Great vid. My favorite part of the first two games is that they actually make turn-based combat fun with action commands and lots of other fun ways of interacting with enemies instead of just static "I attack, you attack" combat. I also love how they give goombas and koopas unique appearances and personalities and NAMES. :)
My favorite part of Paper Mario was the island inhabited by Yoshis and ravens. I had played Yoshi's Island before PM, so seeing this island reminiscent to it filled me with glee. My favorite memory was not wanting to reset at the end because I didn't want to take away their happy ending :P
I'm so glad to see this video! Paper Mario was really my first RPG I played as a kid, and it's still one of my top top favorite video games. As a kid, my favorite part of the game were the characters. I also love how every single partner and NPC have their own personalities - I remember that sometimes, I would read the dialogue out loud to my sister (I definitely remember screaming out all of the red text, haha), and I would write down some things that some characters said that really stuck with me. This game was so important to me as a kid, and I still love it just as much today.
I don't play many RPGs but the ones I invest into are fresh, unique experiences (Mario & Luigi, Xenoblade, Mother). Paper Mario (and TTYD but that's for the next video) is one of the most unique Mario games ever. Gives me such much joy to play it. My favorite part has to be the Locations as you mentioned. You start out in a Goomba Village, that's genius. Toad Town is lively and with many secrets. There's a haunted mansion in the woods, a Yoshi Island with a volcano, a big desert with Egyptian ruins, the Crystal Palace, Star Heaven, Bowser's Castle under Peach's Castle... I could go on and on but you resumed why Paper Mario is basically a 10/10 game perfectly.

What made me love this game so much was the awesome selection of chapters, and the really combat systems. It's in my top 10 favourite games, and I first played this game in 2016, which just shows how good of a game it still is 18 years later IMO

I love the progression you make as the story goes as you play. First you get steam rolled by browser and get knocked to square one. From there you get stronger and get more badges and fight your way to the top. Eventually getting back to bowser and dropping 8 damage a jump with op healing items.
I’ve been playing through OctoPath traveler like many are right now I’m sure, and it’s the first game in a LONG time to give me feelings like this did. I got it Christmas and played the whole day only stopping to eat. We had to call in my older neighbor to beat the big yellow cloud boss because he was too hard for us at the time. It’s a beautiful game and worth all the praise

As much as I like SPM, that's where things started to go downhill on the Paper Mario series. It tried to be edgy to the point that the games after did a full 180.
Yeah! Super Paper Mario is probably one of my favorite games. To be honest I haven't played the first two Paper Mario games, but I can apply most of the good attributes in this video to Super Paper Mario.
I love Paper Mario because while it's very accessible, it's also has a lot of customisation and depth. Additionally, the paper aesthetic, jolly music, engaging combat with action commands, great sense of humor and rewarding exploration make for a very enjoyable adventure.
Paper Mario was the first game I've ever beaten I love everything about it the music is amazing and I can still pop it in and have a great time with it.
I love the original Paper Mario (and also TTYD) and played through it SO many times as a kid, trying out different badges, doing faster runs, or 100%ing it, didn't matter. I did this with several games, with PM being the one I completed the most together with Yoshis Island I suppose. Thanks for this video, just flat out appreciating a game with a video essay like this is really nice. My favorite part was just being able to explore this awesome world of Mario from a completly new perspective with all the small details you mentioned. This game is filled to the brim with fun ideas the devs had and thought to themselves were just that: Fun and creative. I salute you, Ingelligent systems. I hope one day we'll get something akin to those first two games again.

Chapter 5 was my favorite part as a kid, not sure what it was about it but I would always make a copy of my save file after I finished chapter 4 so I could do chapter 5 whenever I wanted. Never liked the part where you baked the cake for exactly 30 seconds, I'd always have to use a timer or our microwave to make sure I got it right.
Absolutely loved that video, I think for me it's strongest element is simply how unconventional it is to Mario. Also how Nintendo is so genius at adding engaging elements to hook non gamers into genres they're not as comfortable with. I'm stoked to see your TTYD review because that really doubles the quality of everything Paper Mario 64 did to the RPG genre.
I think Paper Mario is the final game I have the right to feel very nostalgic for. I just had a strange thought of what it would be like for me at 80 years old to think about playing Paper Mario at 7 in 2001... such a hopeful and innocent time.
I really want an HD remaster of this on Switch. Gonna have to fire up an emulator and start playing through this again. It's been way too long since I played it last.
Yes! This was a fantastic game. Honestly, as much as I love Thousand-Year Door, I sometimes think the original Paper Mario might have been the stronger entry thanks to all of that optional content you mentioned. The combat is certainly better in TTYD and some of its story ideas are pretty original, but PM64 feels like a fuller experience with a larger world to explore.
This! The original Paper Mario always felt like the bigger, grander adventure, although the plot itself is more simple. I think it's because considerably more effort went into designing the overworld. Those huge bursts of exploration and progress in between the dialogue-focused events are super important and were really lacking in the 2nd game imo
Good God I love this game. First video game I ever completed. I love it all, but my favorite part would have to be the penguins in Shiver City. That "murder mystery" segment all the way to the mysterious snowmen protecting the climb to the palace will forever be etched in my mind. Perfect game.
Literally thought about how you were doing, and you released and new video the next day. Absolutely loved this video! Your way of relying games to people is amazing - it makes me want to replay many games I loved in my childhood. Can't wait for the next video!
Cant wait for the Thousand Year Door video! Personally it is my favorite game of all time. It is indeed the perfect equal like you mentioned! My favorite part of the OG Paper Mario was the Flower Fields. They looked so pretty!
I love games that set up the end objective right from the beginning, it gives the player something to look forward to. I remember my first time playing this as a kid I couldn't wait to get to Bowser's Castle in the sky. Finally getting there and then seeing all of the rooms with Mario that you went through as Peach earlier in the game is so satisfying. just one minor thing that makes the game so great, along with everything else you mentioned
My favorite part(s) of Paper Mario was/were the boss designs and music, The Koopa Bros., Tubba Blubba, Lava Piranha, Huff N Puff, and the Crystal King are all SO COOL.
Everyone always talks about Thousand Year Door, but I've always found the original to be the best. And now I can see that it isn't just the nostalgia talking.
I had to run through every areas of this game, Koopa's castle, the desert, haunted house, westernish-cowboy area with the windmill, the snowy area maaaan, this game was so cool and had great soundtracks
I love Pincess Peach parts, the scenaries are all so beatifull, I think Mario got cuter that way, the Flower Field sending you from flower to flower, and the Boo mansion full of puzzles, it's a great game, for the sequel, the thousand years doors didn't need to be so big but it's also a great game

Jimmy John Joe I have actually heard of this! I really want to play it. My only issue is that I really don’t have the means to play it. My computer is kind of garbage.
In my view, the best thing about PM64 is how easy it is to figure out. It doesn't have too many strange, hard to get used to gimmicks as other games, and you can pick it up and become really good in a matter of hours. I also just love the story and characters of this game, they're so imaginative and creative, I could just play this and never get bored. Finding secrets throughout the world is also really fun, like how you could get the over-powered Whacka's Bump from using your hammer on Whacka? Brilliant. Even the name of the character sort of suggests something.
I've played all the Paper Mario games, but I grew up with Super Paper Mario, and it's still my favorite, with its dark, expansive story and cool characters. I think it is largely considered as a bad game because it changed the formula of its predecessors, but not compared to them, its a really good game.
I remember as a kid we would go to Sam's Club, and they would have demos set up for the gamecube, xbox, and playstation 2 (iirc). We'd always go for Paper Mario on the gamecube, and take turns playing and watching, rather then use the other consoles, typically.
freaken love this game. Loved testing the badge system and inventory to see what can I get a way without taking much damage as possible. It really tickles the brain for each battle on a low HP run.

My favorite part definitely part are the ending and the forest zone. The music of the forest still haunts me (in a good way!) and the ending it's just perfectly climatic having the drama it needs without being something so out of this world and then the celebration with all the friends made on the run. Sadly, the rest of the game is usually discarded in my memory since I played a lot more TYD. Gets everything right and the stage system is the best for the series. AND the improvement with the sidekicks at battle (my little gonzalez jr. is the best one). Dunno, since they are so similar I just stick with the gamecube one. The ending didn't get me but still great with the rest
My first RPG was Mario RPG. Trying to play an RPG since then has been nearly impossible for me, because that and Paper Mario are honestly better. The simplicity and actual fighting/timing buttons really makes it the best RPG in my eyes. There's just enough complexity to make it challenging to a casual gamer like myself. Thousand Year Door and Paper Mario are some of the best games I've ever played and every year I always want to go back and replay them. I listen to the soundtracks whenever I'm drawing. Thanks for making this video, I just love this game so much, I'm glad you feel the same way :')
This was the very first non-arcade-style game that I ever beat on my own. My favourite part is the Bowser fight at the end--it was tough and seriously dramatic for a Mario game, and is one of my favourite final bosses of all time.
I just played and finished this game for the first time in 2021 (NSO) and loved it. It holds up incredibly well. It feels like a classic Nintendo game in the truest sense of the word. The design of the world, the puzzles and the battle system are smart in subtle ways. I really bonded with the characters despite the lack of voice acting, through the writing and animation. The whole thing felt polished and like the devs accomplished exactly what they set out to do. I had an N64 as a kid, but got less games at the end of the consoles lifecycle. I know I would’ve loved it when I was younger, but if you’re like me, play it now!
This is brilliant! My favorite part of the original Paper Mario was probably the characters. Bowser and Peach have real personalities! I still haven't played Super Mario RPG, but I just love what the Mario RPGs do with the characters that the mainline games just toss aside.

Peach and Bowser did have a little bit of personality in Odyssey... but not like the RPGs, that's for sure.
Another one of the best aspects of this game is the soundtrack. I love listening to the tunes in this game while I play and I love playing the game over and over. Believe it or not, I've still not completed the game for a 100% run but that will change in the near future. This was one of the first N64 games I've played (alongside Super Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Rayman 2, Goldeneye 007, Mario Party to name a few) and it became my favourite on N64 and one of my favourite games of all time. The chapter I love the most is probably chapter 7 and least is probably chapter 2 but the whole game is really enjoyable from start to end and there's always something to do in this game and has so much replayability that even veteran gamers would come back for more. If veterans were to choose an old game for a nostalgia trip, Paper Mario 64 will definitely be on the list of games they would choose and will be in the top 3 for me.
It´s great to see videos from Sno´s again. I realize this is a weird comment but this man has one of my favorite voices ever. It´s just really pleasant to listen to. Great to see videos again.
My brother and I played Mario 3 a lot. And we loved landing on each other and fighting it out with that amazing "versus" mode, heck we even used it to exchange items, that the other player might need for his next level. So when we played Paper Mario and got to the Koopa Bros boss and heard that amazing music. We both flipped, it was the best thing we heard. But the best part goes totally to Twinkle fighting Kammy Koopa, I thought that was great.
IkomaTanomori what rpg starts you with 4 digit numbers?
I do agree with your point, but what RPG starts you with 4 digit numbers of damage? In general most good JRPGs, especially Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, start in the double digits and then slowly raise so that you get used to the increasing numbers.
I agree with this 100%!

I don't think there's any new music though. rip
Agreed!!

Tixontoxin 64 You don’t need to apologize, we’re here to talk about how good this game is, so feel free to talk away.
Yeah... me too...
And now Nintendo insists on making the opposite.
They aren’t even Nintendo anymore. Nontendo.
"except for Goombario, that dude is useless"
Charge + Multibonk, my dude. He wrecks anything that's unspiked once you get the timing down.
Same here, but I also use Kooper and Bombette a lot. Mega Bomb and Fire Shell are amazing!
I’m a big collector. So I like him for getting the data on all creatures
Not to mention he has funny and entertaining dialogue for EVERY SINGLE enemy, area and NPC.
"Oh, do you mean every major town and npc sprite-"

You never used Refresh? Dude, Refresh is, like, your early-game anchor! That 5FP is worth its weight in gold early on.
Bufudyne If you love paper mario, you should try a romhack/mod called Paper Mario Pro Mode. Just look up the Star Rod Discord and find an invite.

dude flower field was such a good chapter...at the age I was playing it was honestly too confusing for me but the music was easing my soul
Same
Chapter 6 is great for sure, but chapter 7 is my jam!
Hated flower feilds never knew I pass though walls in maze till I got guide guess I should uses goobio

@@fiftyskoopaklub2982 Yeah it kind is. They are both just as guilty in that regard. lol Is 64 untouchable now? lol
It's definitely Chapter 4: Trials in the Toy Box. It can get a bit repetitive going in and out of the toy box, but I loved every second I was inside it! All the varieties of Shy Guys, having to thwart the General Guy's plan to take down Toad Town, that Anti Guy fight, MF'n Watt? I'm getting chills of anticipation just thinking about getting there on my next playthrough!

"Except Goombario, that guy is useless." Whoa-now, them's fighting words!
Goombario isn't useless... I love how his tattle ability makes the HP of all enemies you've used tattle on going forwards, it serves the same purpose as the Peekaboo Badge, without you needing to trade Star Pieces for the badge and wasting 3 BP to equip it.
They turned him into a flat sheet of paper to represent his character.
MegaHOP OH ROASTED
Thanks
actually mario and luigi superstar saga was before thousand year door so that belongs in the first 3 mario rpgs
First 4 Mario RPGS then, Superstar saga is tight af too.
Welcome back Sno!
We missed your amazing videos.
Was SO happy to see this on my notifications
Fallen Freak Productions it's good to be back!
Yes lad. Great to see you back and making vids on one of the best series Nintendo made then ruined.
Watching after the Origami King trailer drop...I’m cautiously optimistic.
the first time i ever played paper mario as a little kid, i thought it was a great idea to put all my levels into health points, and had almost zero badge points and a few flower points, and i will tell you right now that made the game 10 times harder than it should have been. And then the second time i played through it a few years later, i distributed my levels evenly in health, flower, and badge points, and the game was a lot easier, but still as enjoyable due to how detailed the game's environment is.

Personally I haven't found a good balance for level up bonuses in Pro Mode.
You summed up this game’s brilliance perfectly, and now I really want to replay it. This is also the game that inspired me to become a game designer.
It also plays on the radio in Koopa Village.
"Goombario is useless."
No. That is incorrect.
Rank him up a couple times.

Ehh color splash wasn't a bad game just an ok game imo
@Pen Bashiro, MD Origami King is the same way. I hated Sticker Star so much I traded it in to GameStop and skipped Color Splash because it was the same thing but even worse thanks to atrocious backtracking and slowed battles. Origami King is definitely an improvement, but Nintendo seriously needs to accept when they’re wrong and just bring back what worked instead of being selfish dictators like Olly.

4:32 brah! goombario can deal more damage than any other partner via multibonk, especially of you charge up first.

Hah you were like 1 hour away from the next vid on TTYD :)
My favorite part? Oh man. So many parts. I love winter areas. Loving that music and dungeon and jokes all of it.
The music in this game is absolutely amazing.

The many fantastic and creative locations and characters you meet and learn about are what make Paper Mario great for me.

One of my favorite things about these games is the simplicity of combat. They’re so simple they can be thought through like puzzles

"It's sort of sad to see what's become of the paper mario series today"
as super paper mario gameplay is being shown
*angery*
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As much as I like SPM, that's where things started to go downhill on the Paper Mario series. It tried to be edgy to the point that the games after did a full 180.
(Insert comment defending color splash here)
The Ender Golem No.
Yeah! Super Paper Mario is probably one of my favorite games. To be honest I haven't played the first two Paper Mario games, but I can apply most of the good attributes in this video to Super Paper Mario.
Paper Mario was my first RPG ever, and I still love it and enjoy it every time I play it again and again
As a fellow enthusiast for Paper Mario and making PM videos, I loved your take on the first game! It's my favorite in the series!!!

The characters for sure. Bowser’s characterization is amazing and hilarious in this game.
You nailed my favorite part; the aesthetics! The world feels so alive and compete. I love just wandering around and being in the game.
Such a perfect video. Grew up with this game and was thinking about it and saw this. Love it glad people appreciate this game as much as I did 💙
I love games that set up the end objective right from the beginning, it gives the player something to look forward to.
Well I wasn’t sure if I wanted to subscribe, but now you’re putting out content about my favorite video game. Subscribed.

I've been waiting for a Paper Mario video by you!
Paper Mario has such a charm that games these days will never be able to nail down.
It’s a one of a kind game.
Still my favorite N64 game. Before I knew what guides were or used the internet to find the answers. Had endless fun, a joy to play
Snowman AND Paper Mario? I’ve never clicked on a video faster!!!
freaken love this game.

Also... Peach and Bowser did have a little bit of personality in Odyssey... but not like the RPGs, that's for sure.
Jimmy John Joe Ooh, that sounds awesome!
I haven't played Odyssey yet, but I'm looking forward to it eventually.
My boy is back!
