I'm watching the video after I did a similar challenge myself. Except instead of deliberately not using action commands, I used hacks to remove the lucky star so I couldn't do them even if I wanted to. I found some pretty interesting things by doing this. Shell Shot from Parakarry apparently does not count as an action command. It doesn't tell you how to perform it, but you can still use it to target enemies. Some AoE attacks softlock the game. All 3 quakes softlock. Kooper's Shell Toss and Power Shell also softlock. Likewise with Parakarry, Lakilester's Spiny Flip does not count as an action command as it allows you to aim the spiny even without having the action command. Presumably, these 2 moves legally do not count as action commands. Turbo Charge, Water Block and Cloud Nine will always fail to do anything useful.
Huh, I think I've seen someone else experimenting with this in the past...It would've made Parakarry a very strong partner indeed, and would've given Lakilester something to do at the least. The softlocks are disappointing to hear about, though. Thanks for the comment, it was interesting to hear how the game reacts to impossible situations!

Nice video! I’ve recently done several paper Mario challenge runs myself: no badges, no partners in battle (except to break koopa bros stack), and no Mario in battle (except for star and peach beam and anything in the strategies tab), all of them with no items in battle for some extra spice. They were all quite fun (partners only was insanely hard near the end) and I recommend giving them a try. Paper Mario has so much potential for challenge runs!
It does have a lot of potential for challenges. I might try those myself, but they probably wouldn't make the best video because others have already gotten to them well before I could. Glad to hear you enjoyed the video, and hope you'll continue your own challenge-running streak!

When you know a bunch of Tayce T. recipes, this challenge feels pretty feasible. You can make crazy stuff out of cheap/free ingredients if you're patient enough. Life shrooms, shroom steaks, and even delux feasts once you get access to iced potatoes. (Or you can hit Whacka, if you're a monster).
My personal favorite was Sweet Shrooms, since Cake Mix is pretty easy to get a hold of and it provides more than enough healing for 95% of the game. Don't worry, I didn't hit Whacka. Thanks for the comment!

What's your favourite strategy in this game? Mine is probably danger Mario. Even though last stand half's damage, you still need to be careful quite often, but power rush allows you to do a truckload of damage with things like power quake
Personally, I kinda like abusing Mega Rush. It takes a lot more skill and strategy to survive with exactly 1 HP remaining, and the power boost is exhilarating, especially with multi-hit moves like Power Bounce. Thanks for the question!
This is within my plans, and TTYD would most likely make for a much meatier video - especially with the extra restrictions I thought of. Hopefully, you'll stick around for when I get to it!
Looking at your channel, I'm sad you don't have more views/subs. I think your audio could use a little work but still, the dedication to make a Let's Play nearly 160 parts long deserves credit, I hope you play The Answer, though I would maybe separate Let's Plays and Challenges into different channels, that's just me though
Honestly, this is still far more popularity than I ever would have expected, so I'm happy to have an audience willing to watch a slightly-less-popular game! I know my audio does need more work, and I'd like to do more tests to figure out what I can do to record it better and get greater results from post-processing. Wait, someone actually did watch that entire Persona 3 LP I did a while ago?! You deserve serious kudos - as you said, that's a 160-part long LP, and one that had a number of issues! Honestly...I was considering The Answer at some point, but I'd most likely do it as a live stream project if I did it now. I could separate them, but that revolves around me doing more LPs in the future, and I feel like I might focus on challenges and live streaming more. I'm glad to hear this feedback, and hopefully this strategy I've outlined makes sense!
fuck yessssss. ive only seen one of your videos before but god i love the nonsense glitches and strategy possible in paper mario and this seems like it could be a very interesting run
This video actually has the least amount of glitches and weird strategies out of all the challenges I've done so far. Hopefully you were still entertained by what you saw, though!
Power Smash that Subcribe button? Umm... I'm already subscribed? Guess I'll just do it without action commands then, hope it fails to make an impact? While quite fond of Color Splash and Origami King (actually, my first videos were a PMOK challenge with more restrictions than this, but worse management), Paper Mario 64's insane level of depth - or at least questionably strong items - always makes challenges interesting. This of course doesn't disappoint! Great job, especially using so many different strategies and not just grinding for shooting stars!
Well, it seems like it worked. How'd the animation look, by the way? I was curious how others would feel about it. After checking, you definitely did have more restrictions on your challenge - seems like it went okay in the end since there's a finale, though. The older Paper Mario games really do have a surprising amount of depth, and I'm glad this run made me explore some of that depth, even if it still wasn't all that difficult. I'm still a little disappointed in the one fight I did just nuke with Shooting Stars - I'm certain I could have done that Anti-Guy Unit fight without them if I'd tried it. Thanks for the long comment, hopefully you'll enjoy whatever else I end up putting out!
@@NovemberJoy @NovemberJoy I don't know about everyone else, but that animation looks good to me! It looks perfect for the in-game style, yet the new purpose and action makes sense. I did finish that challenge, but it went a lot worse than it looks at first glance. To start, I likely shouldn't have made it a series. Sure, it was fun and all, but the main reason I chose to do so was a lack of experience on summarizing like this. Likely as a side effect of pushing it so hard, Video Editor started exporting with glitches, which didn't get noticed until much later. The aforementioned finale itself had to be uploaded twice due to forgetting to restore speed (the glitches caused are easy to spot at about 4x) until noticing it in the released video. On top of that, I may have messed up the item challenge by being awarded a second mushroom in Chapter 2, possibly overshot an hp count, could have limited magic circles, and worst of all - lost footage for an entire episode without time to restore it (likely my greatest regret out of everything there). Even the view count is a little misleading. Finally getting any views towards the end of this was a great feeling, but on any with 10 or less, nearly half of that was reopening the video to change things or copy the series description to the next video. In the end I'm happy to have tried to make *a* series, but there's still.. all that. However, it's been a while, and after watching your video I looked up the same "No Action Commands" moniker for Origami King, and surprisingly found it may not have been done yet. There's at least 3 that are mandatory towards the end, and a couple sections that might become so as well, but maybe that could be my not-too-distant-future. If I do make it (as one video of course), you're getting credited! Bombing the Anti-Guy is understandable, but I'm sure if you try any more PM64 challenges, you'll quickly have a few ways to do it without the stars. There's so many options, a couple could even become obvious with time. Who knows until trying? I've watched what you make since what, when your first UT video spiked 8 months ago? Provided the game's familiar (and I'm not trying to forget it to play it again semi-blind), I'll be there! Just keep doing what you like, and staying in touch with the community. P.S. Sorry for the overabundance of parentheses - there's a lot to do today, and I wanted to respond to everything without taking TOO much time :)
I'm glad you enjoyed my voice! I feel like this isn't my best showing, so hopefully other videos will prove even better. Thanks for the subscription, I'll try to get more challenges like this out sooner rather than later!
I couldn't resist referencing the soap cake, especially since I was laughing hysterically at putting 6 containers of soap into the cake live on stream. Thanks for the comment!
...the idea I had is not too far from that, except you can't superguard without action commands. It's definitely a "later" thing, though. Hopefully, you'll stick around and enjoy everything else I end up putting out!
There will be a TTYD run in the future, don't worry. I have other projects I'm closer to finishing, but TTYD is certainly on my to-do list, especially now that I've thought of some good restrictions.
I played this for the first time back in 2018. It’s amazing how well it’s held up, especially considering it’s an N64 game and most of those have aged like milk. (Yes, including OOT and Majora’s Mask. Sorry not sorry.) It’s still the second best Paper Mario game imo, and that’s pretty damn bad considering they’re still making them every handful of years, yet they keep getting worse. 🤨
Paper Mario 64 has aged really well, partially because of its unique graphical style and relying heavily on 2D assets. Let's hope the TTYD remake is a sign of better things to come together, alright?
I feel like it wouldn't be that hard, but it might make for an interesting challenge depending on what you're allowed to do. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'm allowed to, but running away has an action command of mashing A to improve your chance, which I was not allowed to do. I'm allowed to select it, but I have to just watch and see if it lets me run away or not. Hopefully this explains it!
Wait a second... At the beginning of the video, you said you couldn't run away, but then when facing the Parakoopas in chapter 1, you ran away to avoid using items. Hmm...
Specifically, I banned the action command for running away - I can still pick it from the Tactics menu, but I can't mash A to improve my chance to run away, meaning it's a fixed percentage based on where the bar starts at. It's not reliable, but it can help sometimes. Hopefully this explains it!
There is a limit, there are a few comments sitting around that I haven't replied to. I do try to reply to as many comments as I can, though! Occasionally, they don't show up, but I reply to everything that shows up in the creator studio tab. Speaking of which, thanks for this comment, and hopefully you enjoyed the video!
Oh yeah also I suck at blocking in this game but somehow I still figured out how to get past the first two levels and sticker star in sticker start I know it's a s***** game but I don't like it either but literally it's the opposite for me I don't know what I use the freaking hammers in that game they always break on me but in that game I know how to do the jump correctly
A lot of people really don't like Sticker Star...I'm almost curious to check it out for a short while, but I get the feeling it wouldn't be my cup of tea either from what I've heard. They might've made the action commands easier in that game, but I don't know for sure. Either way, thanks for the comment!
Is there a reason you decided not to pick up P-Down D-Up in Chapter 7? I feel like the 1 extra defense would have been worth it since you mainly used stuff whose power isn't affected by it, or is minimally affected.
I did pick it up, but I actually opted for P-Up D-Down instead - the extra damage actually helps more than you would expect compared to the extra defense. Might have made things more interesting if I'd went for P-Down D-Up instead. Thanks for the suggestion!
Oh, hey, it's been a hot minute since I last saw you! Glad you enjoyed the video. I was thinking of putting together a Persona video or two in the future - I have less experience with SMT, but it might happen, who knows? Thanks for the suggestion, even if it was sarcastic!
This is on my list - not the next challenge on my to-do list, but I'll try to get to it sooner rather than later! I have some good ideas to make it spicier than this video was, too, so hopefully you'll enjoy!
I believe it's possible, and it causes weird glitches to happen: namely, some attacks will softlock or just fail to work entirely. A few attacks will still work with action commands without the Lucky Star, though! In the end, I wanted to try this the glitchless way. Thanks for the suggestion!
It's certainly a whole thing, yeah. Kooper becomes a meme because his only notable in-battle function is to softlock the game and Parakarry is the best partner in the game because Shell Shot is not considered an action command(Works normally) and is thus by far the partner-attack with the highest base-damage in the game. A true S-tier champ.
I'm more surprised that attacks you can't have before getting the Lucky Star actually change. I would've thought getting the Lucky Star just switches on action commands for your early abilities, but maybe they were thinking of putting the Lucky Star later in the game? I'm glad they didn't!
...You mean 5:46 ? He is well-known for winning by doing absolutely nothing, so I thought if I was doing as little as possible he'd believe I was Luigi. No offense was meant towards the man clad in grassy green! Hope you enjoyed the video, by the way!
Yeah, we've both gone on our own strange journeys, huh? Thanks! It has been a while, and I've been doing relatively well - just living my life, and finding a new type of video I enjoyed making. Hope you've been doing well too!
That's actually an interesting question, though it depends on your definition of "killed"! I'm not very practiced with glitches, but there are plenty of glitches you could use to skip fights. It'd be all about finding the least violent route to acquiring all the partners you need for the final chapter alongside the Ultra Boots and Ultra Hammer...you know, I might have to put this one on the list. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@NovemberJoy No problem, also I am not counting bosses, just standard enemies (though if the boss has enemies in their fight, they should avoid being killed). I know that without glitches there is that one part in Chapter 6 that requires you to kill an entire group of an exclusive Monty Mole variant in order to get one of the mandatory items, but I think it is possible to skip that section entirely.
Mario can use 0% of his power in this game and easily defeat any shell enemy with exceptions to spiny, bowser, and any other enemies with spiked shells
This whole run was just Mario using 0% of his power - and yet it was still relatively smooth because Mario's just that strong. We should all pay respects to his impressive power.
That is basically what this challenge is, now that I think about it...turned out a bit easier than expected, all things considered! Thanks for the comment.
@@NovemberJoy I pretty sure the miss odds for the master 3 is boosted cause that Never Happened to me anywhere else in the game either that or we were really Lucky
It does, which means running away was unreliable against many encounters. I didn't count it for Superstar Saga, though, since I relied heavily on running away to avoid getting too overleveled. Once I get to the sequel, it'll be more important than ever to avoid getting into battles in the first place. Thanks for the comment, hopefully this answers your question!
Unless you use glitches to skip getting the Lucky Star in the first place, there's no way to turn off the prompt. Thankfully, though, I can just ignore the prompts whenever they show up in battle. Thanks for the comment!

I think I've seen that somewhere before. It's funny that Kooper becomes the most useless partner under these circumstances. Thanks for the comment!
never thought i would see goombario do 25 dmg
I wouldn't have expected it either, but anything's possible with enough charging.
Well I can't even perform an action command correctly for jumping the only Paper Mario that I'm good at is Super Paper Mario
I have faith in you, don't worry! If you really can't pull off any action commands, though, then you can use this as a guide!
I have been waiting for this for a while :DDDNow time to watch
Glad to see you here! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@@NovemberJoy good work my man
What's your favourite strategy in this game? Mine is probably danger Mario. Even though last stand half's damage, you still need to be careful quite often, but power rush allows you to do a truckload of damage with things like power quake
Personally, I kinda like abusing Mega Rush. It takes a lot more skill and strategy to survive with exactly 1 HP remaining, and the power boost is exhilarating, especially with multi-hit moves like Power Bounce. Thanks for the question!
@@NovemberJoy Definitely more of a risk but the reward is greater! Good choice!
I have an idea for a challenge run on april fools, beat an rpg game without taking damage or while taking as MUCH damage as possible in every fight
...Hm, that's an idea. I'll have to remember that one!
The Rouxls are simple
Very simple indeed. Thanks for the comment!
Great video! I would love to see this challenge in ttyd too!
Just so you know, the fat shy guy in chapter 4 is named gourmet guy
I'm aware, but thought it was funnier not to call him by his actual name!
@@NovemberJoy ah, ok.
Yay new challenge video
Hey, didn't expect to see you here! Hopefully you'll enjoy it, it was in the works for a while!
fuck yessssss. ive only seen one of your videos before but god i love the nonsense glitches and strategy possible in paper mario and this seems like it could be a very interesting run
I actually did this myself because I used cheats first time I played so I skipped Twink's thing)
Huh. Must've been a very strange experience, then. I've heard a few partner abilities even break entirely if you don't have the Lucky Star...
Broooo noice paper Mario 1 and 2 are on of my favs almost 100%ed TTYD but still working up the energy to do TPO100T
I wish you luck on the Pit of 100 Trials! Glad you enjoyed the video - it won't be the next one, but TTYD is on my to-do list!
@@NovemberJoy thanks man and also I will be waiting :)
This is a nice sequel.
Thanks! I still need to get around to doing something with the second Paper Mario game...or the second Mario and Luigi game, for that matter.
what a criminally underrated youtuber
Thank you! I have no idea how long I'll keep being criminally underrated, but I'm sure I'll find a spot sooner or later. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@NovemberJoy i mean, your most recent videos seem to blow up every time so i hope it wont be too long
I met your channel today and I really liked the content :D keep it up
Glad you enjoyed! I'll keep up the content, hopefully learning how to work and produce videos a little faster in the future.
“Addiction to boos” 🥁
I'm glad someone out there appreciated that joke! Thanks for the comment!
Hell yeah
Thanks for the comment, glad to see you here!
Bud your voice is so epic, I love it you got a sub
I'm glad you enjoyed my voice! I feel like this isn't my best showing, so hopefully other videos will prove even better. Thanks for the subscription, I'll try to get more challenges like this out sooner rather than later!
@@NovemberJoy no rush, I love challenge vids so I can wait ages and not really care.
I support your soap cake reference
I couldn't resist referencing the soap cake, especially since I was laughing hysterically at putting 6 containers of soap into the cake live on stream. Thanks for the comment!
3:16 Wait, I thought running away wasn't allowed 1:00 .
Running away is allowed, I'm just not allowed to mash A when it tells me to do so. It makes it harder to run away, but not impossible!
Your videos make my day
I'm glad to hear that! I hope they did help you, whatever it is you're going through.
Now do TTYD no action commands without items & only superguards
...the idea I had is not too far from that, except you can't superguard without action commands. It's definitely a "later" thing, though. Hopefully, you'll stick around and enjoy everything else I end up putting out!
There's one exception where you HAVE to use action commands. The armored harriers fight.
Can't wait to see ttyd if there is one anyway
There will be a TTYD run in the future, don't worry. I have other projects I'm closer to finishing, but TTYD is certainly on my to-do list, especially now that I've thought of some good restrictions.
I played this for the first time back in 2018. It’s amazing how well it’s held up, especially considering it’s an N64 game and most of those have aged like milk. (Yes, including OOT and Majora’s Mask. Sorry not sorry.)
It’s still the second best Paper Mario game imo, and that’s pretty damn bad considering they’re still making them every handful of years, yet they keep getting worse. 🤨
Paper Mario 64 has aged really well, partially because of its unique graphical style and relying heavily on 2D assets. Let's hope the TTYD remake is a sign of better things to come together, alright?
Can you beat the rest of paper mario the 1000 year door only useing the Crystal stairs cannot beat the first chapter and perchapter
I feel like it wouldn't be that hard, but it might make for an interesting challenge depending on what you're allowed to do. Thanks for the suggestion!
Heres a better challenge can you beat this game without the lucky star? Meaning skipping star haven at the start and immediately starting chapter 1?
heu?!?!?!? Rules: can't use commands, INCLUDING running away, than, at 3:16, admit to saving fire flowers by running away?!?!?!?
I'm allowed to, but running away has an action command of mashing A to improve your chance, which I was not allowed to do. I'm allowed to select it, but I have to just watch and see if it lets me run away or not. Hopefully this explains it!
@@NovemberJoy it did, thanks :D
Wait a second... At the beginning of the video, you said you couldn't run away, but then when facing the Parakoopas in chapter 1, you ran away to avoid using items. Hmm...
Specifically, I banned the action command for running away - I can still pick it from the Tactics menu, but I can't mash A to improve my chance to run away, meaning it's a fixed percentage based on where the bar starts at. It's not reliable, but it can help sometimes. Hopefully this explains it!
My man replies to all comments, no matter how old (very likely has a limit but whatever)
@@NovemberJoy hi
@@tibby4503 ¡Hola!
Thanks for the suggestion!
now beat smt3 nocturne without wanting to pull your hair out /s
great video as always
Oh, hey, it's been a hot minute since I last saw you! Glad you enjoyed the video. I was thinking of putting together a Persona video or two in the future - I have less experience with SMT, but it might happen, who knows? Thanks for the suggestion, even if it was sarcastic!
wow i LOVE your vidoes and i would LOVE it if you could do this for PMTTYD.
This is on my list - not the next challenge on my to-do list, but I'll try to get to it sooner rather than later! I have some good ideas to make it spicier than this video was, too, so hopefully you'll enjoy!
@@NovemberJoy i love your content and would love to see what you challenges you would do for undertale and Papermario!
Good stuff
Thanks for the comment!
What if you actually skipped going to Shooting Star Summit and the getting the Lucky Star that unlocks the Action Commands?
What fossil did you take from the scientist?
I took the Luigi fossil. Very rare, can't wait to get it revived!
55:46 I will not allow this Luigi slander.
...You mean 5:46 ? He is well-known for winning by doing absolutely nothing, so I thought if I was doing as little as possible he'd believe I was Luigi. No offense was meant towards the man clad in grassy green! Hope you enjoyed the video, by the way!
@@NovemberJoy Yeah meant that- and ok but you're walking on thin ice! And yeah I enjoyed it. :D
Wow, you've really come a long way since I last saw you! Congratulations!! It's been a while, how have things been!?
Yeah, we've both gone on our own strange journeys, huh? Thanks! It has been a while, and I've been doing relatively well - just living my life, and finding a new type of video I enjoyed making. Hope you've been doing well too!
@@NovemberJoy I'm really happy to hear that and yeah, same here!
How many enemies are forced to be killed in order to beat the first Paper Mario (using glitches to skip sections is valid)?
You have a dry, dry sense of humor. 😂
My dry, dry humor matches the dry, dry environment.
Mario can use 0% of his power in this game and easily defeat any shell enemy with exceptions to spiny, bowser, and any other enemies with spiked shells
This whole run was just Mario using 0% of his power - and yet it was still relatively smooth because Mario's just that strong. We should all pay respects to his impressive power.
yooooo new video
Yep, and one that took way too long to come out! I'll see what I can do to get the next one out faster.
Traditional RPG
That is basically what this challenge is, now that I think about it...turned out a bit easier than expected, all things considered! Thanks for the comment.
For the master the samething happened to me i was in danger on the brink of death but he missed over 5 times and i murdered him third try too
That's a lot of close calls. Must've been your lucky day, huh?
@@NovemberJoy I pretty sure the miss odds for the master 3 is boosted cause that Never Happened to me anywhere else in the game either that or we were really Lucky
I think we were just really lucky. Good thought, though.
Does running from battle count as an action command? 🤔
Where did you get the hammer charge badge in chapter 1?
I had to look it up - it's in the Koopa Bros. fortress itself, actually! Didn't have to go too far out of my way.
YOU FORGOT THE MOST IMPORTANT BADGE IS ACTUALLY ALL OR NOTHING!!!!!!!
You're right! When you're doing something this foolish, fights truly are all or nothing!
Can you shut of the prompt using action command?
Unless you use glitches to skip getting the Lucky Star in the first place, there's no way to turn off the prompt. Thankfully, though, I can just ignore the prompts whenever they show up in battle. Thanks for the comment!
@@NovemberJoy thanks for the reply I’ll sub... I need a new copy anyways my little brother got me Paper Mario as a bday present but didn’t know it was a repro the Cart doesn’t save
I certainly like the strategies. Your jokes were mostly very nice but some are kinda tired to my ears already, like the Metal Gear jokes. All in all you do very nice work, just needs a bit more polish and you can be a hit
I know I need a little more polish on some of these, but I really can't think of too many jokes for the Peach intermissions besides the Metal Gear ones. Glad you enjoyed the strategies, although you get so strong later on that "hit it until it dies" becomes a valid strategy anyway. I hope I can improve for you, and that you'll continue to enjoy!
cool
Well, the cool part of the game was kinda glossed over, since there weren't any major challenges in Chapter 7, but I'm glad you enjoyed!

Im playing the rom hack Paper Mario TtYD AND IT IS SO FUB
I've heard it's a good one. Glad to hear you're having fun with it! Maybe I'll have to give it a look one of these days...
For the algorithm
The algorithm thanks you for feeding it!
Not to be THAT guy, but I don’t get why people say “Paper Mario 64”. Because it’s not like there’s another paper Mario game on the N64.
I think it's just to specify which Paper Mario game they're talking about. At least, that's how I look at it.
did you play this on N64?
I did not, this was actually an emulator. I guess it must have been pretty good emulation if you asked this question, though.
bro hates talking
gonna guess yes 👍 but you have pretty much ruined the game for yourself if you play it this way 😵
It was possible, and I appreciated the extra challenge introduced by intentionally doing everything as wrong as possible. I can see how it might not be your personal cup of tea, though. Thanks for the comment!
@@NovemberJoy no i just mean strictly from a gameplay standpoint! i love these kinds of challenges and you did a great job on the video
wondering if it's possible with bug fables too, but my point is that it'd be hard to sit through just menuing and then watching your party whiff over and over again. documenting the process adds a whole other dimension to what you're doing
Really cool. I love how these challenges makes you use spells you wouldn't normally use in a normal run. It's sad this get much more views than the other vids but I hope that doesn't discourages you
Don't worry, I won't let it discourage me. That's my favorite part of these kinds of challenges too - watching the tier lists get all shuffled around by playing the game incorrectly! Thanks for the comment, I should be able to get a video finished soon...
