11:18 when a bad driver tries to correct a better driver. When making a turn, you're supposed to stay in your lane and then merge after 100 feet of signaling over. So many bad drivers are in the far left lane and end up in the far right lane when making their turn... that's wrong.

@everydayjan haha but that's what makes human drivers human drivers. They break laws, speed, run stop signs, follow too close, turn where they shouldn't, including onto lightrail and bus only areas, cross double white and double yellow lanes, pass when it's unsafe to do so, drive in shoulders to pass traffic they shouldn't, do illegal u turns, turn into one way traffic, cut people off and brake check them, drive the same speed in other lanes so people can't get by, tailgate, etc. Human drivers are "far superior" so they get mad when others don't break the laws and speed, tailgate, etc. as well. Was coming to point this out! She gets upset that the car is doing the right thing and then says "I guess that's okay". Even when FSD does quirky things, it's still better than so many drivers out there. There should be a stringent driving test that if you don't pass, you HAVE to have FSD. The elderly (and the people around them) would benefit from this the most.

Not in all driving jurisdictions - in 1992 the state that I live in made it ok to choose any lane after making a turn (unless road markings are painted otherwise), provided your vehicle positioning follows an efficient arc to intersect with the desired lane.

I'm a conservative/defensive driver like you are. I too will disengage FSD/AP if other cars are getting too close. But one thing James Douma said is that the car can see in all directions at once and it is better at judging distances and reacting than we are. So the car may need less of a safety margin when other cars get close or when there are several lanes to be crossed. I think that over time we can start to learn to trust the car's judgement in some things. Watching videos of other people using FSD can also help build trust.
I wish we could select a larger follow distance on highways. I live in rural New Mexico where it is less crowded and I'm able to either change my speed or pass to keep from following another car too closely.
I really like the change-lane feature where the car will change lanes for me (if it's safe) when I turn on a blinker. I always look first but I think it's much safer when we are both looking.
Again, my situation may be different than yours but I've had good luck with both AP and FSD in stop and go traffic. I've been using AP for almost two years and FSD for a few weeks. I think there is a learning process to get the most out of AP or FSD. I approach them as driver assistance, not driver replacement. I try to work with the car to get the best experience.

Thanks Everyday Jan for this informative video. I agree with your analysis. I have been testing FSD Beta since 10/2021 and have seen significant improvement on my to and from work. Recently, I have experienced zero takeovers (no accelerator inputs) to and from work on city driving only with version V11.4.4. I which never happened before. It's definitely improving but some people reported some regressions with V11.4.2 having better results. My advise is to always have one hand on the steering wheel and hover your right foot over the brake or accelerator pedal in case of emergency. Let the steering wheel spin between your fingers and apply a slight pinching force to prevent the nag. This will enable you to take over quickly. Also when there is a car behind me, I tend to hover my foot over the accelerator so that I can give the car a nudge to move faster when it is too slow and avoid frustration from the other driver. It is also a good practice in case of infrequent phantom braking. By the way, FSD Beta automatically adjusts within the lane away from an adjacent truck. This solves one of your driving issues with using basic Autopilot. One of my complaints is that FSD Beta does not allow you to confirm lane changes anymore like in previous version but instead resorted to automatic lane changes. You can cancel it by using the turn stalk but sometimes it is too late to cancel. Good job. :)

FSD would be a lot better if it didn't try to be "full" self driving. Just keep the lane, stop at stoplights, follow the lead car, and change lanes when the signal is put on by the driver. Everything FSD does where it tries to be "smart" (like braking for perceived "danger", or attempting to manage which lane it should be in, or trying to negotiate intersections) results in mistakes, especially in FSD being overly cautious, and all those constant mistakes are SUPER annoying to the Telsa driver and nearby drivers.

So many cool older vehicles on L.A. freeways (no rust) like that Volvo wagon at 5:00, and the always-slow traffic allows time to notice them. I agree that $15K for FSD which is still in unreleased "beta" after many years seems an IQ Test. I wouldn't pay $6K for Enhanced AP either since I can change lanes myself and exit freeways (entering freeways is much harder and not supported), plus Smart Summon is risky to use. For kids, a sliding door is best, and the VW e-Buzz is coming (they don't call it a minivan). At 11:25, FSD made the left turn correctly and legally. You fussed it should have swept the turn across lanes into the right lane, which is illegal. Many drivers do that, and it causes many accidents. You must turn into the closest lane (or follow lane markings when present). In CA, It isn't actually illegal to change lanes in an intersection when going straight thru, but ill-advised. It also isn't illegal to cross a solid white, unlike most States, except if a gore region. Great that AP and FSD signal all lane changes and turns. Now if we could just educate the 50% of drivers who never do (fines work).

I originally was going to get a Tesla with FSD years ago, even did a test drive. Due to a bad experience trying to get FSD to work (someone just bought the car before I did a test drive and they disabled FSD without telling me), I ended up holding off to think about it longer. I remember around this time there was a big Fear of Missing Out push to buy self drive, with lot's of false promises, that the car would pay for itself, that it was investment that could earn money back, 'a full not to buy one'. I stressed for a month due to all that FOMO. Looking back now, I'm happy I didn't get it, as the advertising doesn't align to what was actually sold.
I've gone full 360 from my views from then. The whole 'Tesla can release an update, endless upgrades' concept now terrifies. I've seen over my years that live updates, even down to my gaming consoles can 'remove features' with updates and how companies can target individuals such as a reason situation where a person was locked out of there smart home.
For those who say 'but Tesla wouldn't do that'. Your fully entitled to your opinion, but for me, the jade color glasses have worn off and I'm far less trusting. There anti right to repair pushes, such as disabling features when getting repairs done by anyone other then there dealership makes me feel contained. The fear of the unknown on how the vehicle will perform in self driving modes when it keeps getting tweaked.
I do plan on considering Tesla next time I look at getting a car. I say consider as it is fair to consider it again based on how things have changed over the years. The few people I spoke with who own a Tesla, recommend them.

Thats great if youre testing software programs handling inventory control, building management, video games, something that doesnt pit 1-2 ton masses against other 1-40 ton masses and bipedal animals strewn about. If it was more accurately marketed as Co-pilot for highway, ot wide open roads in less population dense areas I believe there eould be a lot less criticism on the feature. However thats not whats been stated for several years and has lead to many preventable losses had the drivers not trusted a software program to not do the wrong thing at the wrong time. And no Thunderf00t or Common Sense Skeptic sent me to comment on your or antone elses video on tesla especially FSD, you just happened to pop up today iny sunday feed. I too also prefer to be on the exit lane at minimum 1 mile prior, definitely 2 miles if there is traffic. Id also be concerned how quickly it moves from the change to a green light as even in my lesser dense region of NE Ohio, priple blow through the ted light in the other direction, sometimes large trucks and if FSD is proceeding forward quickly because the light changed green there literally no time from the acceleration it can do to miss be T-bined by a distracted or careless driver. From a financial perspective purchasing FSD for 15k is not with it as it takes at least 75 months (i.e., 6.25 years) to recoup the money compared to the subscription model of $199 per month and longer if you finance the purchase price (i.e., paying interest on the loan) or if you have the 15k in a high yield savings account (i.e., 8.25 years assuming a 4% interest rate). It seems like you heavily depend on the car to do the driving for you. Even with fsd out it will not work 100% of the time. Especially in the night since the sensors have been replaced with cameras. Instead of using the car as a crutch, you should improve your driving skills. Then use these features in fruition of that, not to depend on them.

Today was first day FSD, at stop light it block turning intersection and before entering a merging lane it stopped first instead of entering into merging only lane directly which I think is safe for that situation. It also stopped on the highway instead of passing a bike with no real bike lane, it was really scary..

I'd like to point out that software may improve but hardware limitation is real, so you're not necessarily guaranteed to get the same enhancements simply because your old Tesla simply cannot perform the complicated computation. All this to say, I wouldn't necessarily rely on "you can upgrade software later" .

This is a reasonable review by an anxious driver reviewing the various features, and kudos on a lot of good guidance in there. However, it should be noted that Enhanced Autopilot (EAP) is $6k, but while Full-Self-Driving (FSD) may be $15k, it includes EAP so it's really only $8k more after that. Teslas were a way better value when EAP was a standard feature. I advise anxious drivers to get EAP but hold off on buying FSD because they won't use it. Of course, when it gets better, it can be added later for $8k.
Drivers with anxiety are going to have more disengagements with all of these technologies, which does have higher correlation with more accidents than if the technology were left on but will still be safer than not using it at all. Still, it's clear you've built some trust over time with the strengths and weaknesses of Autopilot and EAP, but with FSD, your review was more that of a first time experience. You're not able to demonstrate any of the strengths and weaknesses of that tech, even though it's gotten miles ahead of EAP on freeways. It's totally different technology so it makes even better decisions in that environment and is quite customizable to be conservative to aggressive. Some of the issues you have with EAP may go away on freeways even.
I've observed that anxious drivers will never turn FSD on after their first experience with it because it does require a LOT of time allowing it to do it's thing to build trust enough to know what it can handle and what it cannot. Once you know what it's good at and what it's not, I've found my anxiety goes down as my role moves away from having to deal with every element on the road to mostly just copilot watching to make sure this student driver doesn't do anything too dumb. Your mileage may vary. For me, the car drives 99.5% of the time in FSD and I handle the last 0.5%. I am a lot less stressed on the road in that role because I'm less worried as much about what other drivers are doing because I've got a machine watching all 360 degrees around me and if I'm ever in doubt, the visual display shows everything it sees before I could turn my head. Also, if your anxiety is height-related, like driving over bridges, FSD is essential.

Tesla is ignoring older Model S owners. The latest update that MCU1 owners have is from February of last year; 2022.8. Over a year old! Owners of older Teslas haven't had any updates for a looooong time. Even owners who originally paid thousands of dollars for FSD can't access FSDbeta because Tesla is ignoring owners of older cars with MCU1.

Jan, Appreciate your video and your honesty regarding your experience and take on FSD beta. However, I have to point out something important because it's safety related. Using FSD beta when you are monitoring (including necessary interventions) actually makes you safer than driving yourself without FSD beta. This isn't a hunch. The evidence is bearing this out. Tesla started publishing miles driven between accidents and compared FSD beta engaged vs Teslas without FSD beta engaged. We now know that having it engaged is safer in that statistically cars using it drive significantly further between accidents. The reason for this is that when one uses it you have the benefit of redundant driving systems (FSD beta and driver) working together to make the drive safer than either one of the systems working alone. Such redundancy is very powerful. Engineers use redundancy in designing safety critical systems all the time to improve reliability. I think what many people understandably don't realize is that their comfort level (or lack thereof) while using FSD beta does not really correlate to degree of safety during a drive. So while using FSD beta at first feels a bit uncomfortable or even "scary" to some they are very likely safer using it (again as long as you are truly monitoring) than not. Another way of thinking of this is that, when engaged, FSD beta effectively transforms the driving system (hardware) from one brain with two cameras (driver) to a total of 2 brains with 10 cameras (FSD beta plus driver). With respect to comfort in using FSD beta, my wife and I have been using it for about 1.5 years. No question that for the first year it was sketchy from a comfort level for many people and frankly no one but Tesla knew the true safety stats in early days. However, now it has gotten much better overall including comfort and the safety stats are now known to be better when using it. Respectfully suggest you give it a second chance to enhance your safety. To become more comfortable with it just takes practice like over a few months (not days) You basically learn with time when to trust it and when an intervention is needed. You eventually get to the point where you never want to drive without it. The significant increase in safety alone makes FSD beta priceless. So have to disagree with your suggestion to spend that money elsewhere. Thanks again for the video.

The FSD price is out-of-this-world expensive, but Elon probably hopes that people will buy it out of the fear that the price will increase even more. However, the price is already three times beyond the price of buying another cheap used car on top of already buying a Tesla, which makes me wonder if he has lost touch with ordinary people’s economic capabilities.

Hi Jan, thank you for the video. I'm stressed because Tesla let me test drive a Model X last weekend, I LOVED it and want to order one, But the falcon door on the drivers side would never close all the way until I tried again the second time and there was a squeaking noise in the back over every bump. I keep seeing RUclips videos about the same issues not being fixed. I want to try everything including the driving software, but I'm afraid of making this purchase and the service department not being able to fix these issues. Again, I LOVED the model X, but I would be so disappointed if simple items like closing a door or noises in the cabin would persist. Not sure what to do??

Here is a pro tip - drive in the right lane 100% of the time and you won't have to make any of those stressful decisions!!! Better yet, stay off of the freeways completely and you won't have to deal with high speed traffic and high speed decisions!!!

First off… I think you can be a so much better driver than you think. It’s all practice and repetition and making everything about driving as close to natural / muscle memory as possible but of course combined with hand eye foot/feet coordination.
You stated some basic safety things about driving that make me think you are a good driver.
Tesla (and other companies) should really change the name from auto pilot or self drive to something else.
Buyers should of course do their own research before spending that money which should be a given.
Phantom braking issues should definitely be addressed. Eventually.. this technology will be perfected but as of now… It’s a hard pass for me just because of cost, the different issues and the fact that I really enjoy driving even though it’s my main job Monday to Monday lol.
    Love this video btw.

The most recent FSD beta update , v11.4 got worse 😢. I would have recommended v11.3 because it was just good enough to trust it 95% of the time … but now the update got worse . It’s now back to driving in the middle of unmarked roads and dirt roads , possible pushing oncoming traffic off the road. It also hesitates way too much on any turn. And it got worse at lane selection. v11.3 had way less issues. Current version of FSD beta is not worth it. Previous versions was 😂.

OK, I have a comment: there are a lot of drivers, each with their own driving style. This FSD is not your style of driving, this is like a taxi driver with a new car... "too slow" is typically a driver-style comment, not FSD's wrong style... The same type of comments has the old drivers over the other which are not "like them" Sincerely, I hate fast curves and fast/short accelerations/brakes... I bet also your driving style energy consumption is greater than the under FSD energy consumption...by the way...
