Masterpieces only need sequels, when there is enough left to tell thats been unexplored for a whole movie, without filler material. If there isnt, let its legacy be untouched.
But…Maximus was a Roman Pagan? He wouldn’t have gone to either..he would have just gone to Elysium. Which he did at the end of the movie if my memory serves.
Why would a soldier/gladiator go to hell because of killing his enemies. Most of it could be defined as self defence. And he even spared some gladiators
In Greco-Roman mythology, the Elysian Fields were a paradise for heroes and the virtuous, reserved for those who died a noble or worthy death. The Judges of the Underworld-Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Aeacus-decided who was worthy to enter. Roman soldiers, especially those loyal to Mars, the god of war, believed that acts of bravery and dedication in battle could earn them a place in Elysium. This idea was not a guaranteed promise but a deeply held belief, reinforced by works like Virgil’s Aeneid, which portrayed Elysium as a reward for those who lived with honour and courage.
A prequel would have been cool, Maximus rising through the ranks of the Roman army after multiple campaigns and battles ending at the start Of the original movie. I’m still pumped to see this sequel though

I think a gladiator 2 movie wouldn't be too bad. Maximus didn't die and basically becomes Proximus. There would be some great character arcs in there. Maximus would train gladiators, become an influence to Rome, some politics from Commodus destroying the grains. A great ending is him trying to fight the end of Rome.
Considering the chop job they're doing to Gladiator sequel, Russell Crowe should do a spin off where he plays the father of a young Maximus in training. That would make way more sense than modern rap music in the background of a nonsense script... A prequel would make way more sense. I'm convinced that Hollywood is intentionally ruining great films.

I think 1 movie is perfect. Prequel/Sequel, whatever you do the bar was set to high in that first one it will be impossible to top especially now that the cast has aged so much.
Going down the fantasy route would just be dumb. Going from a grounded historical Roman epic to doing that would just destroy its legacy. Leave it be. It doesn’t need a sequel.
The limbo thing is such a bad idea. And the concept "he's killed too many people to go to heaven" is way too Christian, which didn't exist back then. You wouldn't NOT go to the Elysian Fields just because you killed your enemies.
@Da C What WE prefer doesn't matter, that's the problem. You have to see it from those characters' POV. In the ancient world, particularly in the period Gladiator was set, the Romans were pagans. Maximus was pagan (remember the scene where he prays his ancestors and the Gods?). What we prefer nowadays is besides the point. Russel's idea of limbo is a modern-day Christian idea that doesn't fit in that particular context.
The romans absolutely had ideas of eternal punishment/eternal reward. Some of them translate easilly... "If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields... with the sun on your face... Do not be afraid! For you are in Elysium, and you are already dead!" We understand that Maximus's conception of Elysium in the film is concurrent with our ideas of heaven, paradise, etc. The complex notion of the underworld, with its foggy netherrealm which nebulous amounts of punishment and peace. It seems to me that Russell is, in this interview, using "Heaven" and "Hell" in ways that would be transposed to more era appropriate cosmological destinations. Though still, the idea strikes me as a bad one just because... Gladiator is not a supernatural story. "Killed too many people people to get into heavy" isn't a particularly Christian notion either; Jesus doesn't give you five freebies before your redemption is invalid, or something. The whole sequel idea is just messy unless it's about Juba travelling across the Empire's extensions in africa looking for his family.
