    This is THE most informative video I have seen on lenses. The fact that you're referencing them against the M50 and M6 mk2 is great, too many youtubers forget that the general public doesn't have 10 - 15K to wax on camera kit. I hope Canon offer you a sponsorship. Thank you.

    I bought the M50 mark II last year with the 18-150mm kit lens and took it to Dubai Expo 2020. I’m ashamed to say I’m still a novice at photography and used it a lot just in auto mode. However I was surprised at how well most of the shots came out. I returned to the UK and bought the smaller 11-22mm kit lens. Thank you for this video. I’m still getting to grips with the basics of aperture, iso and shutter speed so looking forward to getting out more to use it (once the UK stops raining!)

  • @bodinian
    @bodinian 3 года назад +2

    I have done thorough tests of the EF-M 22mm f2, the EF 50mm f1/8 with and without a Viltrox speed booster, the EF-M 15-45mm kit lens, and the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM lenses.
    TL,DR: 22mm is sharpest when the aperture is open to f4 or larger and has consistent sharpness throughout the entire image at all f stops. 50mm without the booster is sharpest at f5.6+, but when speed boosted has greater center sharpness and worse middle and edge sharpness up until f11, where it has the same sharpness in the center with and without the booster. The zoom lens, predictably is the sharpest when you can't get close to a subject you want to focus on because optical zoom beats the heck out of digital zoom/cropping in. The kit lens isn't the sharpest at anything, but is versatile since it can cover most common zoom ranges and that can be useful when carrying multiple lenses isn't an option.
    At low light where we go to f4 and below the 22mm is the sharpest and maintains its sharpness throughout. The 50mm with the Viltrox speed booster becomes gradually sharper in the center and beats the 22mm in center sharpness at some of the higher of those low apertures, but the sharpness falls off at the edges badly.
    At f5.6 the 50mm without the booster has the sharpest edges, the 50mm with the booster has the sharpest center, and the 22mm isn't the sharpest anywhere, but is still consistent in the sharpness it does have throughout. The 55-250mm all the way down at 55mm (I was only able to test it there due to the room I was testing in being a limited size) doesn't win for sharpness anywhere. It is much better at giving sharpness when using its zoom. An optically zoomed 55-250mm will hands-down be sharper at the spot it is focused on than any of the other lenses in a situation where getting closer is not an option. It has its place and is great for bird watching and is strongest when looking at things far away that the other lenses would need a digital zoom to isolate which would destroy their resolution.
    At f8.0 the 50mm without the booster wins in overall sharpness as the corners catch up then surpass the sharpness of the 22mm. The 50mm with the booster still has the sharpest center, but the falloff in sharpness towards the edges is slowing down. The 22mm is still consistent throughout, but isn't the sharpest anywhere at this narrow aperture. If you want to use the 22mm in bright situations, I recommend you keep the aperture open around f4 and set the shutter speed high to compensate for the extra light.
    At f11 the 50mm without the speed booster wins at all parts of the image. It eclipses the center sharpness of the speed boosted one and beats the other lenses. The 22mm again doesn't win in sharpness at any part of the image, nor does the 55-250mm at 55mm.
    at f16+ diffraction ruins the 22mm's sharpness. The 50mm with and without the Viltrox speed booster perform the same. The 55-250mm is about the same as the 50mm.
    You can use this information to strategically apply lenses where they will work best. I hope this helps someone.

    • @jacqodc3644
      @jacqodc3644 3 года назад

      Bro I got a 50mm lens, should I buy the speedbooster to compensante or buy the 22mm lens?

    • @bodinian
      @bodinian 3 года назад +1

      @@jacqodc3644 the 22mm is the better option, in my opinion. You need to manually fix the aberration from the speed booster 50mm combination in post processing while the 22mm is automatically fixed because it's native (as long as you download the profile to your camera or use DPP4 from Canon). Frankly, the only time I'd use the speed boosted 50mm is when I want to get a full-body portrait of someone indoors where I can't back up, but I don't want to get the background in the scene like the wider 22mm would.
      For portraits in most situations the 50mm with the regular adapter is best.
      For wider shots the 22mm is the sharpest of all of these listed lenses.
      The speed boosted 50mm feels out of place because it had such a niche use, but if you have it you get to enjoy particularly sharp centers, although it falls off a lot as you go towards the edges.

      The Canon macro was a good part of why I picked the M6mk2. I’ve done a lot of close up shooting but never with a “real” macro lens. Also, trying to step up from 1” to APS, I didn’t want to give up macro abilities, even if it does mean swapping lenses. Still, I’m really impressed (vs my 35mm film memories) with how close the Canon lenses can get.

    Love your videos. I use the kit 15-45mm, the Canon EF 75-300mm with the EF-EFM adaptor, and recently bought the Sigma 30mm. I would say the downside of the 75-300mm is that it weighs more than the body, but it's extremely useful when shooting animals and the image quality is superb. Next, I'd probably get the EF-M 11-22mm for landscape photography, unless someone else makes an EF-M mount wide-angle lens. But I do want the other two Sigma lens, and possibly a macro lens (like the Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art) in the near future.

    having watched more than my fair share of youtube video and photography channels and videos, coming back to listen to you is like a breath of fresh air. Very well thought through. Very comforting presentation style, and I believe every word. Feel really confident about the infor you publish. I think I've decided, Canon will have to be my next camera purchase - either APS-C or Full Frame. Still not sure about the choice of DSLR or Mirrorless - somewhat hard to decide.
    The pictures in this video are stunning and I almost cannot believe that such photography is possible with an M50, like the photos are way too good to be true.
    I also love the fact that you do not clog the RUclips airwaves, with lots of gossip, rumour, and innuendos, or attempts at comedy, which can become irritating and pointless.
    Just straight to the point, methodical. It would be nice to see you smile. Without being comedic, you are allowed that. An occasional smile.
    The hallmark of a good video is when you are compelled to listen to it over and over again, as well as bookmark it, cos it really packed a punch. Lots of very useful info. Thanks.
    Requests
    1. If you could do a review of the R5 and R6, I think yours is the one I want to listen to, over and over again, and see the pics and or videos you have taken with these cameras.
    2. If you could do a similar video for the Canon or compatible EF mount lenses that can be used on with Canon full frame bodies or R mount bodies, superb.
    3. Similar review of EF-S lenses i.e for APSC DSLR from Canon, will be wonderful...
    4. Are there adaptors to make EF-M lenses usable on other Canon camera mounts,
    5. And same question as above, but for EF-S lenses?

      @@TechGearTalk A quick check made me realise that more of your videos are focussed on the more affordable Canon cameras, which I respect and appreciate, Please do not fuss too much about getting hold of an R5 or R6, in order to enable your review. I am not likely to buy one of these higher end cameras, anytime soon. So please do not let my request place you under any undue pressure. I was only curious to see what kind of photos you would take, considering the already more than phenomenal results you get with relatively inexpensive cameras such as the M50. From what you have achieved with an APS-C camera, my current opinion is - Full frame should only become a consideration, only if I start shooting professionally and earn enough to justify the expense, or I simply have extra cash. I am now convinced from your photos, that an APS-C from Canon will be more than adequate for all of my needs.. Credit to your channel for helping me come to this conclusion.

I wanted the extra 50mm, and better optical performance (though it’ll probably never make a noticeable difference). 22 for low light, or compactness. If I was traveling and didn’t want to carry extra lenses, though, the 18-150 would be the one.

      For an all-around lens, I prefer the 22mm. It’s so compact and sharp. The 50 on the adapter is going to give you more of a short telephoto/portrait lens. Depends what kind if images you want.

      It’s pretty close. You get like a third of a stop more with the 1.8. So, the 50 by just a bit.

    I really enjoyed this video. I just bought an M50 as an upgrade for my old T5, and I am going to pick up the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 for the marketing photos of my dress store, the Canon 22mm f/2 for my youtube music videos, and just use the kit lens for everyday use. I also have a couple of nice telephoto lenses from my T5 that I will be using as well. This helped a lot!

    I like how you explain everything. if it is possible to list all the basic things you do with this camera with Kit lenses like what type of photography or videos can be taken. Basic setting for Photos(portrait or street photos or videos etc). when you listen, you can't remember what you said. but in written setting lists, you can note it and look back if needed. The photography is now complicated and a lot of things added in digital tech. I just bought this camera with Kit lenses and watching your videos" how to do or operate this camera to get good photos and videos" THanks

    My "desert island camera" is my Leica M10, with a 1979 Leitz Canada 50mm f/2 Summicron-M. But I do have a need for a system for real estate photography and possibly some video. When they're back in stock, I'll use your affiliate link to order the M50 body. For lenses, the 11-22.
    Also, because I love macro, the 28mm macro is a must. Generally, I prefer at least 90mm on a macro. But I did once own and enjoy the 60mm Micro-Nikkor. The 28mm Canon's built-in ring light is a big attraction by itself, but the ability to activate either side independently--oh, yes! In SE Asia last year, I shot a lot of close-ups with a 40mm Zeiss Batis on a Sony a9.

    this was an amazing video since I am getting the Canon M50 pretty soon. But, I am going to new york, ad I want to make sure I get the perfect lense. My budget is below 300, max 400. But I want a camera that's amazing at pictures and videos. One that gets amazing photos of the city, that captures mostly everything, that is wide. But not too wide, so I'm still able to get the family in it. But also one that I can zoom in on, and not blur out the background. One that has amazing focus. I know it's a lot, but I want to get the perfect lens. I have four that I chose out of this video.
    -16mm f 1.4 dc dn from sigma
    -sigma 56mm f1.4 dc dn
    -canon ef-m 15-45mm f 14.5-6.3 15 stm
    -11-22 f4 to 5.6 IS
    And if you have anything that can take really fast pictures that would be great! That way if I want to get a scene of someone facing on the street, I can get it :)
    thank you so much!

    Firstly, your way of presentation is sooo calming compared to all those other in your face videos so I could actually focus on what you were saying. Secondly, this was super informative and a good comparison of lenses that aren't overwhelming to beginners. I think I'm gonna opt for buying the body only (it's like £100 cheaper for body only 2nd hand in England) and then spend £150 ish getting the 22mm. Good information!
    I’m using the kit 15-45, 32 and Sigma 56mm. Also EF 100mm macro and EFs 55-250. I owned the EFm telephoto too but it’s not sharp at 200mm wide open. The EFs is also very lightweight, have more reach and it’s sharper at telephoto end.
    The EF Macro is working very well with crop sensor but nothing for a walk. So I’m searching for good price getting the EFm 28mm.
    All in all my most surprising lens are the 15-45 and 32mm. The kit lens can be very good and lightweight but I owned also some with soft corners. So it’s aluck to get a very good example. Also with my new M6II it’s working very well with these lens and the sharpness is fine. The 32mm is stunning. It’s worth to spend more money then the Sigma. It’s lightweight, absolutely perfect picture quality and also working very well for some macro work (cropping with the M6II!). The only thing is the slow AF compared to sigma. My sigma 56 is perfect for moving targets. I’m shooting roadbike portraits and it’s working fine with the AF speed and sharpness wide open, also it’s have very well controlled CAs!
    The EFm lineup is good and I’m hopping for more to come.
