I had an English teacher in high school who drove a geo prism. One day in class, a student asked "how much did you pay for your geo metro?" And the teacher got furious, he goes "I do NOT drive a geo metro!" Even a geo prism owner was insulted that his car was mistaken for a Geo Metro😆😆😆😆😆😆

I once worked with a guy who drove a red metro convertible. He was as goofy as his car. He had substance abuse issues, no front teeth, and a Mohawk. He was fun to work with as he was always cutting up, goofing off, and was super comical. The crazy stuff he’d get up to, no surprise that he’s no longer with us. A true character.

I had a 90 ... it needed an engine ... I was able to lift the engine out by hand by myself once it was disconnected - a good running junkyard engine was $150 and took about an hour and a half to be back on the road driving like it never happened
it was ultra cheap and lasted a lot of miles after that - I can't call it a terrible vehicle, but it was hilarious to drive

Well the Geo Metro and Chevy Sprint basically had Motorcycle engines.

They were both manual & the same color. One had a perfect interior but engine problems, the other had a perfect engine & a roached interior. I ended up swapping everything so I had one in great shape inside & out with some spare parts. I loved that car.

      Over $5000 for that Metro.
For about that much money I found some decently useful cars (Manual) within' 300 miles from my location...
-2012 Honda Fit Sport, 177k Miles - looks good!
-2006 Ford Mustang, 121K miles - looks mostly clean!
-2007 Hyundai Accent, 65K miles - looks decent.
      -2008 Mazda 3 S Sedan, 177K Miles - looks okay!
      -2002 Volkswagen GTI VR6 174, 136K - looks fine.
While I do admire the Geo Metro charm and simplicity quite a lot, I will never spend over 2K for one even IF the car was in top condition, FUUUUUCK that!

That “plastic key” wasn’t too unusual for the time, even my 1998 4Runner came with one. The point of it is that the entire design allows it to fit in your wallet with credit cards and whatnot….same size. And then if you accidentally had a lockout…..emergency key is in your wallet. Great feature IMO although I never used it. P.S.-it did have a metal interior too.

When I was younger I had an ancient 1965 Pontiac Strato-chief, the cheapest version of that car available, it had a 0 to 60mph time of ten minutes. It had neither safety or comfort, no optional equipment whatsoever other than a crappy A.M. radio and one speaker in the dash, but it didn't seem to matter, the car moved you from A to B as it was designed to do and that was ok with my friends and I.

  • @CaptainEggman42
    @CaptainEggman42 2 года назад +19

I inherited a white '95 Metro base model hatch from my parents when I got my driver's license. Mine came with nothing: no A/C, no passenger side mirror, no radio, but I loved it. My original radio was a boombox, before I put a full stereo (and subwoofers in it) - which turned it into a riding night club. Also added remote door locks - the advantage to nothing in the door, was aftermarket part installation was super easy - and a push-button hatch release on the dash. Other than A/C, by the time I was done with it there wasn't really anything I thought it lacked. It was super cheap and easy to maintain compared to modern cars.
Back in the late '90s when gas was less than a dollar, I could fill it up for like $5, which was a great money making scheme when everyone you know is willing to give you a couple bucks for a ride and only needed to get gas every couple of weeks. I can honestly say I once put 505 miles on a tank, and it then cost me like $15 to fill up, which is non-hybrid impossible nowadays.
I also had a good time driving it. It was a lot of fun in the snow since it weighed almost nothing, it was basically impossible to get stuck and easy to just drift around corners. While it may not have been very fast to 60, I always found it was pretty quick to 25-30 if you knew how to shift it, but the NJSP officer that ticketed me for doing more than 80 on the turnpike can vouch for its top speed.
My parents swapped me cars and sold it almost 20 years ago, and I still miss The Egg a little bit to this day.

I had two of these...a 92 convertible and a 1997 hatchback. To understand the Geo, you have to look at it in regards to what it was designed to do. It was not to set records at he Nurburgring, but rather to offer reliable, cheap, utilitarian transportation...and to that end it was a very effective. When I bought the 97 as a grad student in DC it was the cheapest new car you could get in the US. I kept it for 25 years and just recently gave it away. The little 1.0 inline 3 and manual transmission were a remarkably reliable combo. For several years I had an E55 AMG and M6 Convertible at the same time as the Geo...For commuting to work, I preferred the Geo as it got 4 times the mileage as the M6 and was easier to park...and you don't worry about getting it dinged up. I wish I had kept it truth be told.

There's a scene on The Simpsons where Homer is chasing the the Flanders family with golf clubs in his hands as an homage to Terminator 2... Maude says "Come on Ned! Move this thing!" and Ned answers "I can't! It's a Geo!"... Pretty sure it was supposed to be a Metro.

@@southerndiy1 Thanks, dude. I'm always trying to regain that feeling. I come close sometimes, but it's hard to get back. Especially post-Trump.

I've driven them. Trust me, you won't be zipping around town, or anywhere else.

Me too. despite all the cheapness and quirkiness it's still a neat car to drive around doing your daily stuff and still have fun driving it. I'm from Germany. Here in Europe we didn't have Geo, but the Metro Convertible was sold here for a few years as the Suzuki Swift convertible. It only had little success though and is extremely rare these days.

I have a hatchback that was given to me it’s actually pretty fun to drive. It makes me laugh every time I pass people going 80mph.

I owned two of these in the 90's, I loved them. They are slow and bad in an accident. But the most reliable car I have ever had. Cheap to fix, water pump would go out and would go 30 miles before it over heated in summer. Such a small engine they basically were air cooled. If you saw the radiator you would chuckle. I still own a 2 door 1991 geo metro LS. 10k on a rebuilt motor. Best mpg I got was 54 mpg on a 200 mile trip. 3.7 gallons for 200 miles. Damn near a Prius without the self righteousness lol. I had a yellow and a white one with Suzuki Swift GTI side skirts on it. Takes me back. I drive a V8 Nissan Titan now. Still have fond memories of this little reliable car.
