Autozam AZ-1 review! The Autozam AZ-1 is a crazy vehicle -- a tiny, mid-engine sports car with gullwing doors. It's ridiculous and very small, but also surprisingly fun -- and today, I'm reviewing it! I'll show you all the quirks and features of the AZ-1, and I'm also going to drive the AZ-1 and show you what it's like on the road!

The biggest benefit of the car nobody bothered to mention: when you are done driving you don't need to search for a parking space. You simply put it in your bag and go wherever you want to go.
😂😂😂
Also the fact it doubles as a casket
No, you can't do that - literal guy.
Or you just put a handle in it and pull it around like a classic red steel pull wagon!
You have to take the autozam for walks like a dog
If a Ferrari was a Pokémon, you’d catch 100 of these to evolve it.
Tay!!
glad to know i watch the same videos as tayzonday
Hi Tay!
This is the starter, it evolves into MR2 at level 16 and into Testarossa at level 36.
Looks like this is an opportunity for you to own one!! I wouldn’t have guessed you were a car fan….
I think it's time Doug has a POV cam. That would make the test drive 10 times better.

Yes, I was hoping he would show the speedometer because I was curious how fast he was able to get it going. But the in-car camera only shows Doug's sweaty face 😂

What I appreciate most is that you opened the fuel door for the exploded shot.
Ikr, I love his attention to details in these vids.
Doug: "This is a shockingly fun car!"
Also Doug: "Fun factor 6"
Maybe he expected a 4-5 judging by the spec and the time it was made, so 6-7 is "shockingly good"
He's not IGN. He actually rates from 1-10.
Yup. I don't get this guy. He didn't do well in school. He says it's highly saught after. =fun factor 6?
It's a good score for a 60 hp car
iclassified1 Yes. This guy has reviewed cars that go 0-60 in 2 seconds. A 10 on that scale is high.
Credit goes to the owner for how well this car was looked after.
A fun little thing. Samall but fully developed. :-) Pretty much the only thing that didn't get the special treatment is the exhaust. They could've done something fancy with it.
Some Kei cars made it to outside Japan, with larger engines (or had turbo) so it has potential!
Well, the second, left-side grill is obviously needed for engine compartment cooling. It is rather standard solution to have one intake feeding the engine and other venting the engine bay.
Was thinking the exact same thing
I'm dying at the fact that Doug's taller than the car while kneeling LOL.
It looks like a go cart when Doug does that.
Same!
Try same with smaller Lotus elise:)
I had a similar experience with a Ford GT40 replica. It was weird to kneel next to a car and still be looking down into it.
He looks like a giant next to the car.
In case you guys did not know, Doug recently announced that he’s a father now! He said it on his Instagram, congratulations doug! We all support you!!

Mid engine with a large trunk in the back and one storage compartment in the front and also the Targa top would amazingly fit under the hood in the front. 120 MPH was not out of question. What’s so great about Doug is that everything about him and his content was always the same and original and barely changed. Other RUclipsrs change a lot and people lose interest. Doug still wears the shirts, films with an iPhone, does same style videos, etc and I admire him for sticking to what viewers liked when your channel began!
I will have to respectfully disagree. If you have a look at the ones from a couple of years ago and earlier, the introduction and transitions were more natural, so to speak. There were outside recordings while the vehicle was being driven. And before that there were scenes which had somewhat of a spontaneous air to them, even though they might have been conceived beforehand... but they tended not feel artificial. This might be somewhat of a glorification of what is referred to as the supposed past but it seemed like a time, a great time where there was less of a focus on monetary aspects like viewer counts and catering to viewer patterns, using simplification and repetition for example, in order to preserve the viewership and therefore the income and in some sense also an economic dependence possibly impairing creative aspects.
What a self contradicting statement
I like how his mom still lays his clothes out in the morning
If memory serves he now shoots with an iPhone, but used to use an old Canon camera or something for his earlier vids. Phone cameras have come to far, so it’s like why use anything else now?

Funny thing about Doug is that I feel like he is trying to hold back his laugh and giggle every time he talks in every videos. However, a massive air intake in a for the air conditioning system? Damn, they make the car so hardcore that even the AC unit is turbo charged. I totally understand why Doug talks the way he does.
Everyone deserves Turbocharged Air conditioning.
How does a person fit in there?
@Alex P. I would love this car if it had a central driver seat.
Altho having an intake for the AC for such a small car considering the AC pretty much takes a lot of power from the engine when its on, is pretty genius if you ask me. Even if it gets really underpowered, you at least can enjoy the AC when travelling at higher speeds. My car has 0.9 3 cylinder turbocharged engine and when I turn on the AC, the engine also loses quite more than I would expect from it when turning it on. Nonetheless, its really fun car to drive and turns out quite more reliable than the standard 4 cylinder cars.
@@royliber3824 "quite more reliable than the standard four cylinder cars"
That is SUCH a broad, bold, and likely untrue thing to say... Lol. You know that rotaries were reliable for at least some people right? Ferrari's can be more reliable than their owners Toyota's, that they drive during the week.
Not every engine is made the same. Even within what's supposed to be the same exact engine. Sometimes you get a turd from a really good, known to be reliable engine. Sometimes you pull a gem out of a (toilet) bowl of turds. To say anything at all is reliable, based on a sample size of one, is incredibly misleading and probably inaccurate.
That being said, I'm incredibly happy to hear that your vehicle has been reliable for you, as well as a joy to drive. Did you mention what it was? Did I somehow miss that?

As an owner of an AZ-1 I know what the door reflectors are for. They are to slightly reduce the number of times you bang your head on the open door!
The LH vent is functional, it cools the engine bay. RH vent does not go into the intake, it is directly ducted to the intercooler.
The official position of the spare wheel IMHO looks terrible, I never carry mine at all.
The AZ-1 was engineered and prototyped in the UK by people who knew what they were doing and handles brilliantly, it has to be driven on twisty country lanes to really appreciate it.
8:09 An A/C compressor is an A/C compressor, Doug, it doesn't matter how many vents or how big the car is, if it's there it's there and if it's on it's on. It's the same compressor used in several other Suzuki kei cars including the van/wagon/hatch style ones designed for 4 passengers and needs to cool a much larger space. And it's a good thing, too, as I'd hate to try to track down an A/C compressor for a car with only 5000-ish ever made including the Cara.

Here in Japan there are lots of really bizarre, quirky, and thoughtful kei-cars. I can’t wait Doug to review more of them!
My favorite ones are…
1. Honda N-BOX: a very very tall and narrow MPV-ish thing and is THE BEST SELLING CAR in Japan, period. Even more popular than Prius, Yaris, or all sorts of normal cars.
2: Daihatsu Copen: a cute sports car just like AZ-1, but with a automatic hard top, and a swappable plastic body panels. You can buy panel kits separately from Daihatsu and make it look like a completely different car. More importantly, you can buy one today. This is not 90’s madness, it’s 2020’s madness.
3: Mitsubishi i: Many people know i-MiEV, which was the world’s first mass production electric car, but there was gasoline engine version of it. Very futuristic design even by modern standards, and it was rear midship because the bonnet was just too short.
All of these might be difficult to find in the US, but are not so rare at all in Japan. Come to Japan, Doug!
Doug is gonna have a lot of fun in Japan, not just with kei cars.

It's nice because he reviews /the car/. He doesn't review the brand, or the reputation of the model or past versions of the model. I mean, he mentions it but other review channels let it bias the entire thing.
It's definitely very low-budget editing, but the "beauty" in watching Doug's videos is that he really goes out of his way to do his homework before turning on the camcorder. There's a lot of things he points out that I would never notice about the cars he reviews...at least not at first.

my 1969 Fiat 850 Spider had a 49 cubic inch engine, convertible - front trunk that held 6 full brown bags of groceries - had huge legroom - removing the convertible let THREE adults cram behind the front seats - got 55mpg on the highway from a 5 gallon tank - did 93mph - out-handled most other sports cars of the day with highly predictable over-steer - virtually zero tire wear - regular gas - Bertone styling - a few bolts removed the rear panel to expose the engine and transaxle - beautiful instrument panel - super easy to slip-stream 18-wheelers who often couldn’t see you 🤣
mods: Abarth rejetted original carb - Cannon headers w/tiny muffler - Cosmic mags with 185-70-13 Michelin X tires - adjustable Koni shocks - FIAM air horns (necessary) it was also necessary to let the engine warm up thoroughly before driving
another great feature was it’s looks - teenage girls used to ask for rides I KID YOU NOT!!!! ♥️
As a Suzuki Cappuccino owner, so same powertrain as the AZ-1, I can add a few things:
Technically the Cappuccino is also mid engine, since the motor, while in the front, is mounted to the rear of the front wheels, so it's a front mounted mid-engine roadster. While by no means a rocket 64 horse is pretty good for the size and weight of the car. Really these cars shine on twisty 2 lane back roads. They are the very definition of "roadster". You can really toss these around back road curves at stupid speeds. They just stick to the road. My wife and I just did a 250 mile loop drive yesterday, the final 30 or so miles were on an Interstate. They will go 70, but they really don't like it. It's probably most happy at about 63-67 or so MPH. By Japanese law they fuel starve at 140 KMH, so about 85 give or take.
Storage is terrible on all of the ABC cars. I cannot get a large pizza into the trunk of the Capp, and once the 3 piece hardtop is stored back there, there is literally room for nothing. Probably safes a lot of money, since when you are out and about there is no room for even the smallest impulse buy.
Oh, and BTW, they only have about a 5 5 gallon gas tank, which seems small until you realize they get close to 70 MPG. You can go all day on a $15 fillup.

(Btw , I love your channel)
Definitely an awesome and interesting little car that I had never heard of before.
The more of these little Japanese kei cars I see on your videos, the more I like them.
Can you imagine if one of these was completely modified and converted to electric? Have the engine yanked out, and then a large battery pack stuffed in both the front and in the back?
That would make a wicked little sports car EV with lightning fast acceleration because of the low weight and small size of the car.
THISSSSS.... is the kind of car I'd like to see more reviews of, instead of another boring new SUV.
This is definitely Doug at his most entertaining, but I get why he does so many boring modern vehicles, he’s one of the best names on RUclips when it comes to car reviews. Most car owners care way more about what the interior is like and comfort of the vehicle than performance credentials. RUclips car reviews five years were all these tuned sports cars and usually had an obnoxious presenter telling some unrelated story. I think the only car channel that gets more views per month than him is ChrisFix so I can’t really blame for doing things the way he does
SUVs are equivalent to vinyl roofs.
Someone has GOT to swap a Hayabusa engine into one of these! I desperately want to see an AZ-1 break the sound barrier...
My thinking also.
I was thinking the same thing if I can find one I'll probably do it
Yeah, break the sound barrier and then it disintegrates 😂
i wouldnt even mind if it just had a little bigger turbo you can actually hear spool.
I actually vote for a Connaught 2L V10. That would put it in the league of supercars properly
Doesn't look much different in size than a smart for 2. The smart car also utilizes a 3 cylinder but the transmission even though you could choose between manual or automatic didn't wind out fast enough to make use of an on ramp from a stopped position. I think the scooters out on the market gear up quicker.
Looks like a shrunk MR2 or fiero .
I always watch Doug's videos with the sound muted. His pirouettes with his hands are enough to understand what he is talking about. Besides, it's very funny.
Wife has a 650cc Daihatsu Copen and it’s one of those cars that feels a lot faster than it is, and it handles like a go-kart. Superb, fun little cars.
Hello fellow Copen owner! I got a 1.3 so it's decent by normal car standards, the little thing is just a riot to drive. Love the little thing but even sitting next to mid-size SUVs scares me since the car is about as high as their window line 😂
Loved my copen until the spark plug cracked and fell in the engine
@@thatcopenguy so you guys get the 1300cc engine in a copen?
Love my L880K Copen; fun toy. Could have bought any of the other kei sports cars, prefer the L880k. Good 1 person weeks-long road trip car. A friend owns a Beat restoration garage. He took me for a ride in his track tuned Beat, had me slammed into the seat, pushing into the seatbelt. Quite surprised & yup that's a real sports car. My stock engine Copen is a calm boulevard cruiser in comparison. Parked my Copen next to a New Beetle, which looked big & angry in comparison.

You can literally just swap the engine for a high end motorcycle engine and that would be so sick!
Thats exactly what i am thinking. Imagine swap the engine with GSX-600R engine or GSX-1000R. 180 HP on 600 kg-ish car like this.🔥
Definitely the right play for this car. A high revving tiny turbo motor in this would be pretty epic
Trimuph or Yamaha, do a really good 3 cylinder engines that would fit right in I'd imagine, even a 4 banger could fit I'd imagine.
Cooling issues
yeah, its just that it would break it. the suspension, brakes and everything would break! xD
I didn’t think I would burst out laughing when you showed the picture of it next to the truck but dear God. It’s not even a 3/4 ton it’s sitting next to!!
That's actually a pretty fun little car and I wouldn't mind owning one. Currently I already have a pretty small car myself (Nissan Pixo) but this one looks even smaller. Not too keen on red though as I prefer black and it's a shame that the driver seat is on the 'wrong' side. Also like that Mazda Speed "Space Auto". 😅
EDIT: These sell for 15.000 to 20.000 dollars? Holy crap! I wasn't expecting that! I thought this would be more in the range of 6000-8000. Hell, that Pixo of mine was €8000 brandnew back in 2012 and is a 5-door; although good luck trying to fit passengers in the rear compartment so I just use it as a 2-person car with the rear bench folded down for increased space for groceries and such. Still, I wasn't expecting this thing to be so expensive. Now I'm guessing that the original retail price in Japan was much lower and they only sell for 15k-20k is due to their rarity and desirability for collectors? I can't imagine someone in Japan actually shelling out $20k on a tiny car like this when it first released.
They did make some black Mazdaspeed and M2 versions. And you're right about the price - they originally sold for 1.5 million yen (about 11k USD), so they're a fair bit more now than they were when they were built.
Some of the cost of these is going to be over the whole having to import it from Japan and all the legalistic paperwork that has to happen for that, which in the US is a headache and a half.
@@austingee238 Yeah, I can imagine that getting one shipped in a container is gonna run you quite a bit of cash (I once had a Sterling Sovran kitcar brought over from the UK). Over here in the Netherlands the paperwork is a pita as well and feels like they just do it on purpose to milk extra cash. Like every import you have to get a full examination of the car first and pay a ton of cash just to register it on Dutch plates; even though we already have our yearly MOT examinations anyway. Buying the car is easy, but the costs are in getting it to you, registering it, and then the annual servicing with lots of costs when something breaks.
Ah well, I'm still happy with my tiny litte Nissan Pixo. It may be just a tiny A-type shopping cart but it's black (my favorite color for a car), has AC/power windows/central locking, and it gets me where I need to go.
It just had one MAJOR flaw in that the AC condenser&radiator sits in a fully open space behind the bumper. So it's in plain view at road level without any protection; so that one got hit by tiny stones and other debris constantly while driving on the freeway and eventually sprung a leak resulting in a pretty nasty repair bill of almost €500. So I had the mechanic add some of that black aluminium racing mesh across the front that I bought for less than 20 bucks off Amazon. Now at least it has some additional protection against incoming road debris and it also looks cool (actually, it now looks like how the car should have rolled off the assembly line).
Pretty ridiculous how these companies make such (intentional?) mistakes when a bit of metal mesh could have prevented this. Apparently also several Porsches (911's, Boxsters and Caymans) have exactly the same issue where the radiator/condenser is completely unprotected (which is crazy because ... it's a Porsche! They couldn't even add some mesh in the bumber in the factory??). So any Porsche people out there may wish to check and put a cheap mesh grill of less than $20 across the front that not only looks cool but may also save you a ton of money from a broken AC unit. I imagine that the ones from Porsche are a lot more expensive than my little Nissan.😅
If Doug lays down next to the AZ1, he would literally match its length.
My dad had a 1975 Cadillac coupe deville, that’s almost a foot longer than twice the length of this car, my caprice is 6 inches short of twice the length of this thing.
Dos the AZ-1 change lengths based on the video? (Doug "I'm 6'3"/6'4" tall" DeMuro...) 🤣

Can't wait to see its quirks and features.
I want this more than any other car you’ve covered.
Larger air intake might help performance in the mazdaspeed…more air = less need for sapping precious power with the mighty AC. 😜
Exactly
The size of the rod that holds the hood up should have definitely been a quirk - It looks like it's maybe a foot long at most.
Also, Doug, the average male height for Japan and the USA is about 5'8 - At 6'3, you are FAR from "reasonably sized adult", you are considerably a giant, haha.
Bullshit the average height of a Japanese man is 5’8
A quick Internet Search finds the average height of Japanese man is 5'7"; and the American man just a fraction less than 5'10". Point well taken - Doug is nearly a foot taller than the average driver. Or course he's uncomfortable. It's the price one pays when their either too tall or too short for the product.
@@InfoSecGuardian That's a really long way of saying, "I agree with everything you said!", but I'll take it!
And people were even smaller 30 years ago when there cars came out.
@@dongatello6969 Surprisingly it is not far off. When I went to Japan I was surprised that people under 45 were a head taller than old Japanese people. What was yet another surprise was that (I traveled across Asia in 2005) in Korea they were even taller. Many, many women 5'8 and many men 6'2. Women 5'11 and men 6'4 were not uncommon, maybe because of the sheer number of people in the city of Seoul. But I also went to Vietnam, Indonesia and Philippines and their women were 5'2 and 5'5 for men.
I really wanted to see Doug get in and drive one of these ❤
I honestly burst out laughing when you showed the picture of it next to the truck.
Doug talking about how the air conditioner steals so much power from the engine reminded me of my 1990 Geo Prizm. It too had air conditioning on that little 4 banger. I used to call it the "air brake" as you could feel the car slow down when you turned it on. Used to use it all the time going down hills since that was about the only time you could use it realistically.
