Alright buddy. Maybe a slight hiccup in your thinking about Gyrados and Snorlax. What if they're ecological necessities? Hear me out. Vegetation seems to rapidly grow in the Pokemon world. Sometimes a tree can go from Sprout to Fully Bearing Fruit in less than a day. To the point where you can freely pick any fruit you see, it's encouraged seemingly country wide wherever you are in the world, and any seed will sprout into a new tree. Maybe the massive amount of food those Pokemon eat is only like a drop in the bucket to a world that seems tailor made to regrow anything lost and then some.
While I agree they are necessities, same as a natural fire, they have both been denoted to be catastrophic in terms of damage for gyarados, and snorlax has entries stating that it has left villages without food and is feared for this. Though that was far more dangerous in Hisui. The world does revolve around normal growing logic with some Pokémon influence. The only time this doesn’t apply is in game as it is done for game balance reasons. After all, nobody would play a game where it takes real life months to get a single berry. The other issue overall is that grass Pokémon take nutrients from the environment, slowing growth in *some* areas while others flourish, such as those touched by Shaymin. Otherwise most seeds left behind by Pokémon seem to provide more Pokémon unless stated otherwise. Even if we set all this aside, and we go as you say, then we’d have a massive spike on herbivores and carnivores since food supply would be so large and could support massive populations. This in turn would all circle us back to populations stabilizing where they are eating food just slow enough for food to replenish, all for Snorlax and Gyarados to come back in and upset the balance, pressing the reset button. So, either way, we end up at the same point overall! I am happy you challenged my logic, and it gave me time to reflect on ecology a bit more.
@@KrillikVA alright.... I'm off work long enough to give this a proper response. Love the dialogue, though. Okay, I concede and can see where you're coming from with Gyrados and Snorlax. However, I found another talking point we might be able to delve into a bit longer. I'd actually STILL argue the growth rate of regular plant and fauna would still be higher in the Pokemon world to reality. 1. The Pokemon World Government, henceforth shall be referred to as PokeGov, (and believe I'm waiting for your foray into Poke Politics because I have MANY thoughts) seems FAR more adept and concerned with nature preservation. Past Deified Pokemon and the scarce, relatively, signs of desertification in the world, I wouldn't think drought was too common in the Pokemon world. Even the far more industrialized continents seem to have vast nature reserves in tact and protected. 2. Bug Pokemon are FAR more common in the modern Pokemon world than our own insects. With known Pollen Pushers in Kanto and Kanto adjacent alone you have famed Pollen Pushers Butterfree, Beedrill, and Heracross and their ilk among others who are all mainly classified as common Pokemon. 3. While I mainly agree with your point on Grass Pokemon, I would also play a bit of Devil's Advocate to it, as well. There are many examples of Grass Mons living symbiotically with Nature and providing a clear benefit to Nature beyond your stated Shaymin. Bellosom brings a warm sun with its dance and is honored to almost worshipped for it in South Johto. Gloom and Weepinbell both attract the bugs necessary to facilitate the constant Pollen transfer. These are all just based off Grass Mons which can be found commonly in Kanto*. All in all, loving the content man. Love the discussion.
@@iskander0725 I love this! These discussions are what makes me even more excited for future research! I have definitely thought about the Pokemon government, especially as they are fleshed out a bit throughout the years (they pay the salary of the league and gym leaders after all!) I actually don't have an argue point AGAINST anything ya said, in fact you're just correct in bringing up good points that HAVE TO be considered. The only real shame is that we can't measure the effect of these creatures over time, except with special locations such as Ilex forest. Because some locations exist because of the sheer amount of pokemon in the area and are heavily protected by the eldest of them as we have seen in the anime and games even! This could be the Venusaur or Torterra as forest guardians, or we can get more specific and talk about the Totem pokemon in the games! I'll be keeping our discussion closely in mind as I eventually touch on these subjects in the future!

Thank you I have had plenty of constructive criticism and encouragement to be my passionate self and not be afraid to just read something on my screen, then take an aside afterwards to add my thoughts and opinions. This way things stay nice and organized and you all get the performance and accurate information as you deserve. And as a small tangent, me in my overall personal life has become more truly confident as well, which has been an amazing side effect.

I would think that when talking about the ecology of the Kanto region, the ecology of the Johto region should also be taken into account because the regions have a shared ecology and a shared border line that doesn't prevent Pokemon from moving between regions as shown in the games. In addition, in this regard, we should decide and define whether only the Gen1 and Gen2 original creature rosters are taken into account or whether the Pokemon added in the remakes are also taken into account. And this video does that very well.
3 years later, Slugma is from Cinnabar Island, found in Kanto under the Cycling Bridge. Alongside Murkrow & Houndour somewhere in Kanto. I guess since Red only traveled during the day (instead of perpetual sun), Murkrow could have avoided detection or simply migrated (& probably from Sinnoh, evolving into Honchkrow).

I would like to give my own inputs on the Viridian Forest in particular: You can explain the lack of Butterfree and Beedrill encounters on the ground by the concept of the trees in the forest being flowering trees, so they would be spending most of their time up in the canopy where the flowers sprout. Beedrills are the apex predators of the forest, and thus for Butterfrees to not only live but thrive, they have to provide a benefit to the Beedrill hives: perhaps they are useful pollinators or perhaps the Caterpies produce honeydew. Pikachus are more opportunistic, scurrying out of their burrows to try to grab berries that fall from high up in the trees, but the reason they're so rare is that the Beedrills predate upon them, and if the Pikachus stay out in the open too long, they'll be captured by the Beedrills. Probably a lot of the 'random items' scattered around the forest come from trainers who 'got lost'... which means they most likely fell prey to the Beedrills.
That’s a pretty strong possibility honestly. Hmm…I can’t remember if head butting trees produced them, but I would stand by your logic still as they would likely be higher up or at least migrating away. I also agree with the idea of Pilachu being hunted down, and them potentially being the occasional food source for our resident terrifying bee pokemon
@@KrillikVA When you see a Beedrill, you might get distracted by their many sharp stingers or the fact that they're 15x as big in every dimension as the largest real-world hornets, but you should really not underestimate their intelligence. As social creatures that dominate and maintain a particular biome, they would evolutionarily have been driven toward higher intelligence in terms of optimizing and breeding natural resources, defending those resources, making war and building battle tactics against rival hives... The forests themselves would likely over time be replaced with whatever trees the Beedrills prefer to be there, as they certainly have the tools and motivation to stunt or kill trees that aren't useful for them while encouraging growth of trees that are. There are several Pokémon species that have the right build, social structure, temperament, and environment to not just live in an ecosystem but rather dominate it, rebuilding it in their image, and develop the kind of intelligence and resource management skills that humans themselves evolved, and Beedrills are high on that list.
@@Aaa-vp6ug It's about numbers, being vigilant, and swarming to ward off or remove threats to their territory well before they can explore or discover the primary hive grounds. It's about communication and coordination, and yes, it explains why they are so fiercely territorial.
Meowth also eats pikachu. Its pokedex number is reverse that of pikachu, the whole anime refers to it, and the whole thing with cat and mouse also kinda fits.
My own theory for this world we call Pokemon is how evolution affects the eco-system. (I’m writing this pretty early on in the video so unsure if it’s touched upon): My theory goes for Pokemon which eat both other Pokemon and vegetation (say Pidgey) would mostly have to feed on vegetation and only one or two would go the other way which would make them more likely to evolve becoming the protectors of there group. For an example, Pidgeotto is rare in viridian forest and has more prey with the numerous bugs available. Which is why it’s rare to find fully evolved Pokemon like Pidgeot in the wild.

The reasoning for the different encounters with different rods could be different lures. Since repels are a thing, if you could make a repel that only repelled some pokemon that would change encounter rates, alternatively the lures themselves could look like different food items/the hooks could be specialized for different types of pokemon. Finally as far as horsea in ponds are concerned all water pokemon are capable of surviving out of the water, and some can float in air(...somehow),so it might be more accurate to view them as more capable lungfish.
I can 100% get with the different hooks for different Pokémon Horsea in ponds may have gotten my favor more of it wasn’t 60% of the population. It’s a fun arguable point you have since the whole region is temperate, but it felt wrong as we’ve seen some water Pokémon struggle on land and others do fine. I might need a video on all water types to see which ones can go on land….
@@KrillikVA Horsea at least can float as shown in battles,I considered one reason for horsea to be in perplexing areas is if they migrate for reproduction or other reasons. This would make the ponds stopover spots similar to the places migratory waterfowl rest, alternatively they may use the ponds themselves as spawning locations since they would be safer than the ocean.
I always thought that if you encounter a previous evolution on a route that the final evolution is also there even if you can't find it. Maybe they are just rare enough that it is so uncommon they don't count them in the possible encounters.
I haven't watched the whole video (this video is SICK!) but I would say: I think the reason predators are more commonly found in tall grass than prey is maybe because predators are more brash and curious of travelers than prey are.

considering ditto keeps showing up, they definitely learned to mitos over time, other than that disregarding ditto makes sense, if it is a failed mew clone, it's likely a "recent" introduction to the ecosystem, and didn't have much affect, because it just copies the pokemon already present in the ecosystem

Many of the Pokémon are not naturally found actually! At least, not here, not even in Johto, which is very surprising The only thing I had missed was cerulean cave but I do talk about that in Johto

In my experience, most caves are cold inside, not hot. Cold air is more dense, so hot air has a bad time reemplacing it. I also want to go to Naica, but it's more an exception (supidly big crystals and stupidity hot) than a rule. But stalactites, stalagmites and pilars also rule, so go to a regular cave in its place
I should have specified their temperatures during seasons and how they stay more temperate, that would’ve been better I realize. Because yeah, they are cooler in hotter climates especially and will take a bit before they get warm. Which is also dependent on humidity. It’s been a while since I heavily brushed up on cave knowledge so thank you for sharing!

Just wanna say that this video kept me company today, as I was typing and doing my stuff on the PC and left it runnin on the other screen. I mean, it's obvious that there's an exaggeration of whoever wrote the pokedex entries, but when we don't wanna find logic in it, it's wonderful! 2:22:39 I mean if we look at the lore, it is an excellent point that ditto does not fit into the ecosystem at all because it is a human manufactured failed mew clone which is why its invasive/not yet fully integrated into the ecosystem and food chain.

I think the prey/predator skewing stuff is simple, prey are likely more skittish and try to avoid the player while predators might mistake it as prey (remember even small pokemon are stronger than a similarly sized animal)

Watched yesterday last night and I'm OBSESSED. This was so cool and informative and such a great analysis of the region and it's Pokémon's. This is no way a criticism btw: i'm just curious to know why you didn't include the cities and towns that actually have Wild pokémon in it's watery areas? I understand places such as Pewter being skipped and all, but I had to double check Staryu's wild encounters locations cuz I found it weird that Staryu didn't appear on the video (you briefly mention them, but not in a way to explain what they most likely eat, where they live etc etc), and Staryu is in all of the places Shellder would be (using the fishing rod on Cities with water + Cinnabar Island). So I would think that it would be interesting to also include these types of cities and towns since there is wild Pokemon living in them. Also, Cerulean Cave was a place I was very curious for your analysis, due to having, not only Mewtwo's presence, but some Pokémon such as Parasect and Kadabra who were not present on the wild on other places. (Although I guess Cerulean Cave from the original Red/Blue/Green/Yellow games would be better to analyse since it also includes stuff like Rhydon, Chansey, Dodrio, Raichu and Seaking, whom all I believe, were never found on the wild in FrLg's Kanto) Anyways, can't wait for the Johto one, gonna be obsessed and watch your other videos now. lol
Quickly read this, Cerulean was partly a mistake, and I really wanted to focus on ecology as one day I’ll look at humanity’s effect on pokemon in each region Johto comes out tomorrow so enjoy that as I do address some extra stuff! i think for your own sake, you should have covered the hgss versions when applicable, because if/when you get to johto, numerous "johto" pokemon only show up in kanto, so you'll probably have to retread a lot of kanto when johto comes around
I'm always tempted to cover more in a video, but for once I wanted to really section things off and focus on singular regions so I can REALLY deep dive into everything proper as you all deserve!
I kind of have a hard time believing that Pidgy feed on Rattata if anything I think it would be the other way around though not all that often. Rats are opportunistic and will hunt on occasion but Pidgey is not a predatory bird even though it's a eeveelutions totally are. If anything I think they probably all just vibe until around fall or winter and then that's when the Rattata might start picking off young and old.
honestly i think that this should have looked at heart gold and soul silvers kanto aswell as it along with FRLG would give us a better look over a greater period of time not to mention give us a look into the nocternal kantonian pokemon like houndoom
I did consider it, but the variables started getting way out of control and included more of Pokémon from generations 2-4 instead of the focus it needed on gen 1 We’ll see how things become fleshed out with more time and generations covered
@WyGuy2087 nah, I can get some real mean comments sometimes and this got nowhere near that. I portray myself as a scientist of sorts so I like to try and assume best intentions with constructive criticism!
Pidgey does not eat Ratatta, Pidgey eat Earth worms and Caterpie. Pidgey isn't large enough to go after Ratatta for route 1 and 2. As for Veridian Forest, Pidgeotto is the prime Predator even over Beedrill.
Considering its evolutions eat other Pokémon and they are all predator birds, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary in a more realistic context to consider that Pidgey would eat Rattata, as they would be taught by their parent Pokémon. In addition, small Pokémon such as Sneasel work together and are known to take down Mamoswine. Caterpie, Ratata, and Pidgey are all the same size being 1 foot Caterpie is 6.4lbs Pidgey is 4lbs And Ratata is 7lbs An Eagle in real life is only able to carry on average 12lbs if they’re swooping and weigh only upwards of 20lbs. Theoretically, Pidgey should not be able to even carry any of these Pokémon if we base this on logic of size or weight. Finally, Pidgeotto does not have a spawn rate in Veridian forest, this is likely due to the potential of Beedrill swarms that occur. I wanted to full consider each part of your argument before I responded so it took me a bit of time before I had the time.
I was really thinking about something when it comes to the Cubone line in relation to Lavender/Pokemon Tower. Is there a possibility that there used to be more abundance of Cubone and Marowak around the area before/during the time Lavender Town was built/created? How much affect would something like that have to the ecosystem? I can see parallel examples of how this also happens in real life My idea being there could have been a bigger population of Marowak but they could have been disrupted by man when creating Lavender Town. We know that Marowak are cave dwelling Pokemon due to them being found only in Victory Road and Cerulean Cave but Cubone is only found in Pokemon Tower in Gen 1. If the only place to find and catch Cubone is the tower, due to it being the only place they occupy, can we make the assumption that they probably don't eat rocks or other Pokemon since they would only be surrounded by Ghost type Pokemon. (Other Rock and Ground type Pokemon in Marowak's case and I don't think they would eat Machop/Machoke either) What would Cubone be eating? How would it be surviving? I would think, similar to the Zubat's, they would venture outside of the tower to find food but will always return to the tower and that's maybe because that is where their mother's spirit rests. We know by Cubone wearing its mother's skull that they would be very attached to their parents. Why else would only Cubone be in the tower and not any Marowak? We don't see many examples of Pokemon dying out or losing their habitats due to humans taking over the environments but examples exist. Like Alolan Corsella, which is literally ghost coral due to their habitats being destroyed by man creating cities and polluting the areas near the corral. This being a parallel example to Marowak losing its habitat with Lavender tower being built where they once could have lived. This could add to your theory of Gastly being formed by those gasses and fumes from passed on humans. I'm sure the Marowak and other Pokemon that have passed on in the tower also act the same as the passed on humans would for the Gastly. (Perhaps a cursed or haunted burial ground situation?) We also know man/team Rocket took the lives of certain Pokemon in the town and tower, including a mother Marowak like in the gen 1 games. All of this adds another layer to why only Cubone is found in the tower and not Marowak. Another aspect to think about is the fact you can only find Cubone in the Rock cave in Gen 2 and the remakes. With Silver/Gold/Crystal taking place after the events of Gen 1, I think it's two years later, we see the Pokemon Tower no longer exists the way it used to. It is converted into a Radio Tower, thus driving the Cubone away into Rock Cave without the home/safety of the tower. The Gastly and Haunter also lost their home and were driven out of Kanto entirely. Thus only to be found in the Johto region in Ecruteak and Violet city. All that to say, without getting heavy into game timelines, is there a possibility that Marowak and Cubone had their population cut by human interactions? Lavender Town being built and the actions of Team Rocket could play such a pivotal role in this Pokemon's lore and how it's population being possibly cut down affects the ecosystem in and around Lavender Town and the Rock Cave. This could also be a new way to explain or give a new perspective to the theory as to why Cubone are found with its passed on mother's skull on its head? (Ignoring that it has it when hatched from an egg 😅) Just don't really understand why only Cubone would be found in the Tower/Rock cave when Marowak can't. Just a comment for thought! Love your videos and hope to see more for the other regions! Also would be cool for you to point out how humans affect Pokemon and their past/present/future ecosystems as you continue thru the generations/regions!
I loved reading the thought process on this and I have a feeling I’ll end up thinking about this when I am walking through Johto! And I think I’ll definitely have to cover Pokémon-human habitat coexistence after ZA since that’s its focus!
A video dedicated to Human and Pokemon coexisting and how that forms new or affects previous ecosystems sounds like another really great video idea! Especially for when Pokemon ZA comes around and we get a ton more answers and info about how humans truly affect these Pokemon's habitats. There could be many more examples revealed of humans assisting or destroying ecosystems and how that affects the Pokemon. I think my comment also could help explain why certain Pokemon aren't in the region they originally hail from in certain games. Later games kinda stopped doing sequel relationships like how Gens 1 & 2 have, but I know certain older Pokemon have newer dex entries that may imply that the region they are found in isn't their original home or place of origin. Like Alolan Sandshrew and Vulpix, also I think this applies to many starter Pokemon as well. Humans removing or taking over certain Pokemon habitats force them to migrate elsewhere. This might be why many Pokemon discovered in the Johto region are no longer native to that region itself or vise versa. Instead you wait to beat the game and travel to Kanto to find Pokemon like Houndour, Murkrow, and Slugma/Magcargo. Like I mentioned in my comment, it's also vice versa since Gastly and Haunter no longer are native to the Kanto region after the Tower is taken down and seemingly driving away all ghost Pokemon from the region. This wouldn't make them to be considered Johto Pokemon even though that is their new habitat... or does it? You can only find the Gastly line and the only other Ghost Pokemon Mismagius in Johto after the events of Gen 1. (Do Gastly and Haunter migrate?🤔) Johto might be where they inhabit but Kanto would still be it's original place of origin perhaps Loved this video and how much it's allowed me to think differently about Pokemon, a game I've been playing for 20 years. If this becomes a series it’ll go CRAZY when we get to Hoenn. Deserts, rainforests, Shoal Cave, Mt. Pyre, etc.
Alright buddy. Maybe a slight hiccup in your thinking about Gyrados and Snorlax. What if they're ecological necessities? Hear me out. Vegetation seems to rapidly grow in the Pokemon world. Sometimes a tree can go from Sprout to Fully Bearing Fruit in less than a day. To the point where you can freely pick any fruit you see, it's encouraged seemingly country wide wherever you are in the world, and any seed will sprout into a new tree. Maybe the massive amount of food those Pokemon eat is only like a drop in the bucket to a world that seems tailor made to regrow anything lost and then some.
While I agree they are necessities, same as a natural fire, they have both been denoted to be catastrophic in terms of damage for gyarados, and snorlax has entries stating that it has left villages without food and is feared for this.
Though that was far more dangerous in Hisui.
The world does revolve around normal growing logic with some Pokémon influence. The only time this doesn’t apply is in game as it is done for game balance reasons. After all, nobody would play a game where it takes real life months to get a single berry.
The other issue overall is that grass Pokémon take nutrients from the environment, slowing growth in *some* areas while others flourish, such as those touched by Shaymin.
Otherwise most seeds left behind by Pokémon seem to provide more Pokémon unless stated otherwise.
Even if we set all this aside, and we go as you say, then we’d have a massive spike on herbivores and carnivores since food supply would be so large and could support massive populations. This in turn would all circle us back to populations stabilizing where they are eating food just slow enough for food to replenish, all for Snorlax and Gyarados to come back in and upset the balance, pressing the reset button.
So, either way, we end up at the same point overall!
I am happy you challenged my logic, and it gave me time to reflect on ecology a bit more.

Okay, I concede and can see where you're coming from with Gyrados and Snorlax.
However, I found another talking point we might be able to delve into a bit longer.
I'd actually STILL argue the growth rate of regular plant and fauna would still be higher in the Pokemon world to reality.
1. The Pokemon World Government, henceforth shall be referred to as PokeGov, (and believe I'm waiting for your foray into Poke Politics because I have MANY thoughts) seems FAR more adept and concerned with nature preservation. Past Deified Pokemon and the scarce, relatively, signs of desertification in the world, I wouldn't think drought was too common in the Pokemon world. Even the far more industrialized continents seem to have vast nature reserves in tact and protected.
2. Bug Pokemon are FAR more common in the modern Pokemon world than our own insects. With known Pollen Pushers in Kanto and Kanto adjacent alone you have famed Pollen Pushers Butterfree, Beedrill, and Heracross and their ilk among others who are all mainly classified as common Pokemon.
3. While I mainly agree with your point on Grass Pokemon, I would also play a bit of Devil's Advocate to it, as well. There are many examples of Grass Mons living symbiotically with Nature and providing a clear benefit to Nature beyond your stated Shaymin. Bellosom brings a warm sun with its dance and is honored to almost worshipped for it in South Johto. Gloom and Weepinbell both attract the bugs necessary to facilitate the constant Pollen transfer. These are all just based off Grass Mons which can be found commonly in Kanto*.

I have definitely thought about the Pokemon government, especially as they are fleshed out a bit throughout the years (they pay the salary of the league and gym leaders after all!)
I actually don't have an argue point AGAINST anything ya said, in fact you're just correct in bringing up good points that HAVE TO be considered.
The only real shame is that we can't measure the effect of these creatures over time, except with special locations such as Ilex forest. Because some locations exist because of the sheer amount of pokemon in the area and are heavily protected by the eldest of them as we have seen in the anime and games even! This could be the Venusaur or Torterra as forest guardians, or we can get more specific and talk about the Totem pokemon in the games!
I'll be keeping our discussion closely in mind as I eventually touch on these subjects in the future!

I would think that when talking about the ecology of the Kanto region, the ecology of the Johto region should also be taken into account because the regions have a shared ecology and a shared border line that doesn't prevent Pokemon from moving between regions as shown in the games. In addition, in this regard, we should decide and define whether only the Gen1 and Gen2 original creature rosters are taken into account or whether the Pokemon added in the remakes are also taken into account. And this video does that very well.
3 years later, Slugma is from Cinnabar Island, found in Kanto under the Cycling Bridge. Alongside Murkrow & Houndour somewhere in Kanto. I guess since Red only traveled during the day (instead of perpetual sun), Murkrow could have avoided detection or simply migrated (& probably from Sinnoh, evolving into Honchkrow).

I would like to give my own inputs on the Viridian Forest in particular:
You can explain the lack of Butterfree and Beedrill encounters on the ground by the concept of the trees in the forest being flowering trees, so they would be spending most of their time up in the canopy where the flowers sprout. Beedrills are the apex predators of the forest, and thus for Butterfrees to not only live but thrive, they have to provide a benefit to the Beedrill hives: perhaps they are useful pollinators or perhaps the Caterpies produce honeydew. Pikachus are more opportunistic, scurrying out of their burrows to try to grab berries that fall from high up in the trees, but the reason they're so rare is that the Beedrills predate upon them, and if the Pikachus stay out in the open too long, they'll be captured by the Beedrills.
Probably a lot of the 'random items' scattered around the forest come from trainers who 'got lost'... which means they most likely fell prey to the Beedrills.
That’s a pretty strong possibility honestly.
Hmm…I can’t remember if head butting trees produced them, but I would stand by your logic still as they would likely be higher up or at least migrating away.
I also agree with the idea of Pilachu being hunted down, and them potentially being the occasional food source for our resident terrifying bee pokemon
@@KrillikVA When you see a Beedrill, you might get distracted by their many sharp stingers or the fact that they're 15x as big in every dimension as the largest real-world hornets, but you should really not underestimate their intelligence. As social creatures that dominate and maintain a particular biome, they would evolutionarily have been driven toward higher intelligence in terms of optimizing and breeding natural resources, defending those resources, making war and building battle tactics against rival hives... The forests themselves would likely over time be replaced with whatever trees the Beedrills prefer to be there, as they certainly have the tools and motivation to stunt or kill trees that aren't useful for them while encouraging growth of trees that are. There are several Pokémon species that have the right build, social structure, temperament, and environment to not just live in an ecosystem but rather dominate it, rebuilding it in their image, and develop the kind of intelligence and resource management skills that humans themselves evolved, and Beedrills are high on that list.
Given their weak stats, I’m guessing their apex predator role is due to being really numerous and essentially jumping every prey.
@@Aaa-vp6ug It's about numbers, being vigilant, and swarming to ward off or remove threats to their territory well before they can explore or discover the primary hive grounds. It's about communication and coordination, and yes, it explains why they are so fiercely territorial.
Meowth also eats pikachu. Its pokedex number is reverse that of pikachu, the whole anime refers to it, and the whole thing with cat and mouse also kinda fits.
My own theory for this world we call Pokemon is how evolution affects the eco-system. (I’m writing this pretty early on in the video so unsure if it’s touched upon):
My theory goes for Pokemon which eat both other Pokemon and vegetation (say Pidgey) would mostly have to feed on vegetation and only one or two would go the other way which would make them more likely to evolve becoming the protectors of there group. For an example, Pidgeotto is rare in viridian forest and has more prey with the numerous bugs available. Which is why it’s rare to find fully evolved Pokemon like Pidgeot in the wild.
I think my favorite parts are the picture painting. When Japan makes pokémon real, this will be People's first resource in establishing the real pokémon should be distributed

The reasoning for the different encounters with different rods could be different lures. Since repels are a thing, if you could make a repel that only repelled some pokemon that would change encounter rates, alternatively the lures themselves could look like different food items/the hooks could be specialized for different types of pokemon.
Finally as far as horsea in ponds are concerned all water pokemon are capable of surviving out of the water, and some can float in air(...somehow),so it might be more accurate to view them as more capable lungfish.

Horsea in ponds may have gotten my favor more of it wasn’t 60% of the population. It’s a fun arguable point you have since the whole region is temperate, but it felt wrong as we’ve seen some water Pokémon struggle on land and others do fine.

@@KrillikVA Horsea at least can float as shown in battles,I considered one reason for horsea to be in perplexing areas is if they migrate for reproduction or other reasons. This would make the ponds stopover spots similar to the places migratory waterfowl rest, alternatively they may use the ponds themselves as spawning locations since they would be safer than the ocean.

I always thought that if you encounter a previous evolution on a route that the final evolution is also there even if you can't find it. Maybe they are just rare enough that it is so uncommon they don't count them in the possible encounters.

I haven't watched the whole video (this video is SICK!) but I would say: I think the reason predators are more commonly found in tall grass than prey is maybe because predators are more brash and curious of travelers than prey are.

considering ditto keeps showing up, they definitely learned to mitos over time, other than that disregarding ditto makes sense, if it is a failed mew clone, it's likely a "recent" introduction to the ecosystem, and didn't have much affect, because it just copies the pokemon already present in the ecosystem

In my experience, most caves are cold inside, not hot. Cold air is more dense, so hot air has a bad time reemplacing it. I also want to go to Naica, but it's more an exception (supidly big crystals and stupidity hot) than a rule. But stalactites, stalagmites and pilars also rule, so go to a regular cave in its place
I should have specified their temperatures during seasons and how they stay more temperate, that would’ve been better I realize. Because yeah, they are cooler in hotter climates especially and will take a bit before they get warm. Which is also dependent on humidity. It’s been a while since I heavily brushed up on cave knowledge so thank you for sharing!

I think the prey/predator skewing stuff is simple, prey are likely more skittish and try to avoid the player while predators might mistake it as prey (remember even small pokemon are stronger than a similarly sized animal)

Watched yesterday last night and I'm OBSESSED. This was so cool and informative and such a great analysis of the region and it's Pokémon's.
This is no way a criticism btw: i'm just curious to know why you didn't include the cities and towns that actually have Wild pokémon in it's watery areas? I understand places such as Pewter being skipped and all, but I had to double check Staryu's wild encounters locations cuz I found it weird that Staryu didn't appear on the video (you briefly mention them, but not in a way to explain what they most likely eat, where they live etc etc), and Staryu is in all of the places Shellder would be (using the fishing rod on Cities with water + Cinnabar Island). So I would think that it would be interesting to also include these types of cities and towns since there is wild Pokemon living in them.
Also, Cerulean Cave was a place I was very curious for your analysis, due to having, not only Mewtwo's presence, but some Pokémon such as Parasect and Kadabra who were not present on the wild on other places. (Although I guess Cerulean Cave from the original Red/Blue/Green/Yellow games would be better to analyse since it also includes stuff like Rhydon, Chansey, Dodrio, Raichu and Seaking, whom all I believe, were never found on the wild in FrLg's Kanto)

I kind of have a hard time believing that Pidgy feed on Rattata if anything I think it would be the other way around though not all that often.
Rats are opportunistic and will hunt on occasion but Pidgey is not a predatory bird even though it's a eeveelutions totally are. If anything I think they probably all just vibe until around fall or winter and then that's when the Rattata might start picking off young and old.

honestly i think that this should have looked at heart gold and soul silvers kanto aswell as it along with FRLG would give us a better look over a greater period of time not to mention give us a look into the nocternal kantonian pokemon like houndoom
I did consider it, but the variables started getting way out of control and included more of Pokémon from generations 2-4 instead of the focus it needed on gen 1
We’ll see how things become fleshed out with more time and generations covered

Pidgey does not eat Ratatta, Pidgey eat Earth worms and Caterpie. Pidgey isn't large enough to go after Ratatta for route 1 and 2. As for Veridian Forest, Pidgeotto is the prime Predator even over Beedrill.
Considering its evolutions eat other Pokémon and they are all predator birds, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary in a more realistic context to consider that Pidgey would eat Rattata, as they would be taught by their parent Pokémon.
In addition, small Pokémon such as Sneasel work together and are known to take down Mamoswine.
Caterpie, Ratata, and Pidgey are all the same size being 1 foot
Caterpie is 6.4lbs
Pidgey is 4lbs
And Ratata is 7lbs
An Eagle in real life is only able to carry on average 12lbs if they’re swooping and weigh only upwards of 20lbs.
Theoretically, Pidgey should not be able to even carry any of these Pokémon if we base this on logic of size or weight.
Finally, Pidgeotto does not have a spawn rate in Veridian forest, this is likely due to the potential of Beedrill swarms that occur.

I was really thinking about something when it comes to the Cubone line in relation to Lavender/Pokemon Tower.
Is there a possibility that there used to be more abundance of Cubone and Marowak around the area before/during the time Lavender Town was built/created?
How much affect would something like that have to the ecosystem?
I can see parallel examples of how this also happens in real life
My idea being there could have been a bigger population of Marowak but they could have been disrupted by man when creating Lavender Town.
We know that Marowak are cave dwelling Pokemon due to them being found only in Victory Road and Cerulean Cave but Cubone is only found in Pokemon Tower in Gen 1.
If the only place to find and catch Cubone is the tower, due to it being the only place they occupy, can we make the assumption that they probably don't eat rocks or other Pokemon since they would only be surrounded by Ghost type Pokemon. (Other Rock and Ground type Pokemon in Marowak's case and I don't think they would eat Machop/Machoke either)
What would Cubone be eating? How would it be surviving?
I would think, similar to the Zubat's, they would venture outside of the tower to find food but will always return to the tower and that's maybe because that is where their mother's spirit rests. We know by Cubone wearing its mother's skull that they would be very attached to their parents. Why else would only Cubone be in the tower and not any Marowak?
We don't see many examples of Pokemon dying out or losing their habitats due to humans taking over the environments but examples exist.
Like Alolan Corsella, which is literally ghost coral due to their habitats being destroyed by man creating cities and polluting the areas near the corral. This being a parallel example to Marowak losing its habitat with Lavender tower being built where they once could have lived.
This could add to your theory of Gastly being formed by those gasses and fumes from passed on humans. I'm sure the Marowak and other Pokemon that have passed on in the tower also act the same as the passed on humans would for the Gastly. (Perhaps a cursed or haunted burial ground situation?)
We also know man/team Rocket took the lives of certain Pokemon in the town and tower, including a mother Marowak like in the gen 1 games.
All of this adds another layer to why only Cubone is found in the tower and not Marowak.
Another aspect to think about is the fact you can only find Cubone in the Rock cave in Gen 2 and the remakes. With Silver/Gold/Crystal taking place after the events of Gen 1, I think it's two years later, we see the Pokemon Tower no longer exists the way it used to. It is converted into a Radio Tower, thus driving the Cubone away into Rock Cave without the home/safety of the tower.
The Gastly and Haunter also lost their home and were driven out of Kanto entirely. Thus only to be found in the Johto region in Ecruteak and Violet city.
All that to say, without getting heavy into game timelines, is there a possibility that Marowak and Cubone had their population cut by human interactions? Lavender Town being built and the actions of Team Rocket could play such a pivotal role in this Pokemon's lore and how it's population being possibly cut down affects the ecosystem in and around Lavender Town and the Rock Cave.
This could also be a new way to explain or give a new perspective to the theory as to why Cubone are found with its passed on mother's skull on its head? (Ignoring that it has it when hatched from an egg 😅)
Just don't really understand why only Cubone would be found in the Tower/Rock cave when Marowak can't.

I loved reading the thought process on this and I have a feeling I’ll end up thinking about this when I am walking through Johto!
And I think I’ll definitely have to cover Pokémon-human habitat coexistence after ZA since that’s its focus!
A video dedicated to Human and Pokemon coexisting and how that forms new or affects previous ecosystems sounds like another really great video idea!
Especially for when Pokemon ZA comes around and we get a ton more answers and info about how humans truly affect these Pokemon's habitats.
There could be many more examples revealed of humans assisting or destroying ecosystems and how that affects the Pokemon.
I think my comment also could help explain why certain Pokemon aren't in the region they originally hail from in certain games.
Later games kinda stopped doing sequel relationships like how Gens 1 & 2 have, but I know certain older Pokemon have newer dex entries that may imply that the region they are found in isn't their original home or place of origin.
Like Alolan Sandshrew and Vulpix, also I think this applies to many starter Pokemon as well.
Humans removing or taking over certain Pokemon habitats force them to migrate elsewhere. This might be why many Pokemon discovered in the Johto region are no longer native to that region itself or vise versa. Instead you wait to beat the game and travel to Kanto to find Pokemon like Houndour, Murkrow, and Slugma/Magcargo.
Like I mentioned in my comment, it's also vice versa since Gastly and Haunter no longer are native to the Kanto region after the Tower is taken down and seemingly driving away all ghost Pokemon from the region. This wouldn't make them to be considered Johto Pokemon even though that is their new habitat... or does it? You can only find the Gastly line and the only other Ghost Pokemon Mismagius in Johto after the events of Gen 1. (Do Gastly and Haunter migrate?🤔) Johto might be where they inhabit but Kanto would still be it's original place of origin perhaps
