I want to live in the timeline where Paul is a household name, widely respected for his songwriting skills, and put on the pedestal that pop stars are.
i listened to this when youtube first started gaining popularity in college and acoustic sets were just getting added to the medium. Things like MTV unplugged AiC etc....only people that really wanted to share something beautiful put forth the effort because there was no money in it...kind of like the internet was in 93-95. The people that matter live in the timeline you describe. It isn't indie, it is pop culture but it is the popular culture that values heart and not dollars.
Not only is this a great song that never gets any credit...This Jools Holland TV show was the best music show around, and it got cancelled. What an odd world we live in.
I never appreciated this song back when I first heard it. Since then I've listened to an enormous amount of music, only to find that... Yes, Paul was and is the best there is and this song is golden.
Only if one is as cool as Paul and as capable of writing so much great music can you sabotage your career and still be one of the most influential songwriters of your generation. They don’t have a word for that kind of thing.
I'm almost positive Jools made a mistake with his introduction. Paul came on the show right after he released 14 Songs in 1993; however, as far as I know, The Replacements were never featured.
Yeah it seems he forgot that awesome 1993 appearance but technically the members of that band were replacements to The Replacements. Maybe ol Jools was being cheeky
@leminyelloblak Very true.If the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had any sense, they'd put The Replacements,Husker Du and The Pixies in there.Just to name a few..
Not only a great version, but a rare perfect live version from Paul. He actually looks like he is interested in nailing it. Would love to know the open tuning and chords he is using on this.
He loves the word Misanthropes ! mis·an·thropeˈmis(ə)nˌTHrōp,ˈmiz(ə)nˌTHrōp/nounnoun: misanthrope; plural noun: misanthropes; noun: misanthropist; plural noun: misanthropistsa person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society.
I like the studio version better. This one is faster and loses some of the feeling. Sometimes slower is more powerful. Still an amazing song either way.
The Mats were on Old Grey Whistle Test which was the precursor to Jools' show but I think he was being cheeky in that the guys in Paul's band were replacements to The Replacements in their 1993 performance
Paul Westerberg’s contribution to musical lyricism and sound could never be over-estimated. His place as an inspiration to other artists will always be underestimated and should be considered an icon to musicians everywhere. Unfortunately he ruined it and could have been in the rock n roll hall of fame if he really gave himself a shot back in his prime.
A lot of his songs sound the same structure and tone wise but each has it's own story, they're all good stories with mostly sad characters but that's what draws us Paul fans in so tight. He tugs on those heartstrings just right
He is a neglected genius. Breaks my heart so easily with superlative lyrics and subtle chord changes.
Fricken Genius. He's a wonderful songwriter not appreciated by those "who still get by on trash".
neglected?

I second that.
Musicians and know his importance.
That was nice
I hope he reads your comment someday
I love the way he thinks and writes
( a wonderful truth )
He IS the man. What an influence - poetic and cool.
His playing!! His strumming and plucking! I’m learning guitar, and if I can ever do this one justice, that’ll be the day.
He's one of the best lyricists out there too.
Lmao, that picture of Ash laughing is following me everywhere
It's a wonderful song, I still get by on those.
If the world made any real sense - there would be at least 1 million hits on this video
Paul Westerberg makes me cry... :')
he definitely doesn't get the recognition he deserves. brilliant songwriter, suicine gratification is a lovely album
So good! I met Michael Bland once, what an awesome dude. Minneapolis has some of the greatest musicians in the world.
I've had this MP3 for almost 2 decades, it's pretty cool to see the video accompanying it!
Such an effortless masterpiece. The man is beyond talented.
Not only is this a great song that never gets any credit...This Jools Holland TV show was the best music show around, and it got cancelled. What an odd world we live in.
Still going now...
Never gets the credit he deserves... Great song.
Best songwriter ever.
I never appreciated this song back when I first heard it. Since then I've listened to an enormous amount of music, only to find that... Yes, Paul was and is the best there is and this song is golden.
July 2024 and still listening to this masterpiece
This song is pure gold
It's amazing how great he looks and sounds
Only if one is as cool as Paul and as capable of writing so much great music can you sabotage your career and still be one of the most influential songwriters of your generation. They don’t have a word for that kind of thing.
suicaine gratification is such a great album
love paul and this song
Man this song fucks me up everytime...
Shared this one so many times. Fantastic lyrics, and he dressed to the eights for Jools. He didn't clam the lyrics or notes on this appearance.
Haven't listened to this song in a few years till now...still love the song all the same, but what an odd trip through those memories it was.
wish i could give this 6 stars.
Damn...what an artist!
great performance, thanks for posting.
F**kin incredible!!
ahhhhhhhhh! CHILLS.
love me some PAUL WESTERBERG.
He's playing so fast, it's like he's dying to get off the stage and yet he still makes it work. So Westerberg.
There's too much truth in this song, people can't handle it.
How am i feeling? Better, I suppose... It's a wonderful lie, I still get by on those
"wearin to much makeup, not near enough clothes..." Dam he flows
genius....
me too.
and i also been accused of never opening up.
they get too close then i keep my mouth shut.
listen to the replacements and then ull know hes a punk rocker doing awesome acoustic song
It's sad that a man so young thinks he is so old. Bet he has a better perspective on it these days.
I'm almost positive Jools made a mistake with his introduction. Paul came on the show right after he released 14 Songs in 1993; however, as far as I know, The Replacements were never featured.
They did appear on Whistle Test in 1985, which was kind of the precursor to this show.
Yeah it seems he forgot that awesome 1993 appearance but technically the members of that band were replacements to The Replacements. Maybe ol Jools was being cheeky
Pretty much my favourite song
"You can dress to the Eights, you can dress to maim"
@leminyelloblak Very true.If the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had any sense, they'd put The Replacements,Husker Du and The Pixies in there.Just to name a few..
Professor Firefly .....don't forget soul asylum ..Pirner is a great song writer also. Must be something in the water in the land of 10,000 lakes
Who cares about the rock n roll hall of fame? We know these guys are great
Professor Firefly pixes? Yeah right.
2030 inductees maybe
Not only a great version, but a rare perfect live version from Paul. He actually looks like he is interested in nailing it. Would love to know the open tuning and chords he is using on this.
this is great
this is the first song from him you've heard of him solo?!? well, hes amazing.
Lookin out forever
@tbonefender - I agree, it's a bit pacier and it heads straight in.
Great version - Thanks for uploading it 'Sammyzuko'...
Paul Westerberg is a music genius.
I still get by on wonderful lies too
Amen.
amen to that...
Ryan Adams in my mind isn't even a pimple on Westerberg's ass.
Galacticpurveyor Ryan is a fan of his. Nothing wrong with that.
❤
@Dollyrar Totally agree!
He loves the word Misanthropes ! mis·an·thropeˈmis(ə)nˌTHrōp,ˈmiz(ə)nˌTHrōp/nounnoun: misanthrope; plural noun: misanthropes; noun: misanthropist; plural noun: misanthropistsa person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society.
It's off of his "Suicaine Gratifaction" album from 1999.
@bottlenosedborg he is paul westerberg..
wow
Nice version. Even better than the studio recording.
is it ever too late to be a groupie
Mood
Hahaha
Nah
You can catch him sometimes shopping at Walgreens or Walmart but don't tell a soul
Wow he took a big step
Why can I not find Paul W doing the song 'Self Defense'?
Very good underated songwriter right here
A hard core trubader.
I like the studio version better. This one is faster and loses some of the feeling. Sometimes slower is more powerful. Still an amazing song either way.
@breadmanofscience later with Jools Holland is still going
He sounds really different from his days with the 'Mats. Really cool though.
exactly and meanwhile the auto tune singers are getting millions of views , so wrong on many many levels !
You should have put a middle 8th in this song it would have helped
0:03 What? I want this footage of The Replacements on Jools Holland
The Mats were on Old Grey Whistle Test which was the precursor to Jools' show but I think he was being cheeky in that the guys in Paul's band were replacements to The Replacements in their 1993 performance
it's just strange I remember him being in a punk rock band
I suppose that depends on how one would define what a "hippy" is...
Is this from 2019?
Just a man and a guitar
typical Westerberg... eviscerates everyone with (his) lyrics.
Came on = made a name for himself
Wow Ryan Adams took this and made a career
Didn't PW write "we Are the Normal" for GGDs?
Can't believe he's 50 now.
ilovemred yup he wrote the lyrics and even recorded the vocals for it on a little tape he sent them with the lyrics
@homesteadyband Or more like an edgy Ryan Adams.
The Archies wrote better songs
So did Metro Station
Too much makeup not near enough clothes.
I think you're over-estimating Westerberg's contribution considerably.
Paul Westerberg’s contribution to musical lyricism and sound could never be over-estimated. Unfortunately he ruined it and could have been in the rock n roll hall of fame if he really gave himself a shot back in his prime.
Zuke Luffa I like PW but you're a fanboy
It’s impossible to over estimate anything about Paul Westerberg. You get it (and it hurts), or you don’t.
A lot of his songs sound the same structure and tone wise but each has it's own story, they're all good stories with mostly sad characters but that's what draws us Paul fans in so tight. He tugs on those heartstrings just right
Paul hasn't written one great song since The Replacements. His songs today lack balls and depth.
wovokanarchy oh shut up
Really? Things? First Glimmer?
Thanks for that. I needed a laugh today.
genius...
