    • @groovining

      My pleasure friend! Happy to help. Melodic stuff can definitely be difficult for sure. I often find simpler is better. Lots of little melodic motifs in different instruments all put together rather than playing a lead melody in 1 instrument :)

    • @mb2776
      @mb2776 Год назад

      I don't struggle with melodic stuff but I also want too much of everything sometimes. After listen closly to some tracks, especially newer breakcore style stuff, most of the pads used in the songs are just pitched up and down a few notes/octaves. try to get ur melody fitting the key of the pads can really help!

    A few more tips that I think leads towards to achieve that very sound (otherwise amazing work so far)
    - put everything into an old hw sampler. AD/DA conversion may lead to miracles. Lpf or lower the sampling rate to an extent.
    - hw reverb aux on the mixer (cheap, like midiverb II)
    - put that delay/reverb on everything as a send, including drums in small amounts - except the bass
    - vocals lean towards pitching up instead of down, that's kind of a more contemporary thing in dance music, I think.
    My main reference tracks for that era are like Doc Scott's Tokyo Dawn and Forme - New Element. Was pretty much a teen back then when they came out and I was blown away. I love your channel btw.

    • @groovining
      @groovining  Год назад +1

      Thanks dude, glad you've been enjoying the channel! Tokyo Dawn has got wicked rolling drums, lovely pads also. New Element is a tune, never heard it before.
      Amazing tips also! Those old-school samplers are definitely responsible for a lot of the sound. I'm lucky enough to have an Emu/Akai and they sound fantastic. Even just sampling sounds in and playing them back at the same pitch adds lots of colour without even doing the sample rate tricks etc. You've actually given me a great idea for a future vid so thanks for the inspiration! Cheers ✌🥷

      @viktorvigh4513 Год назад +1

      @@groovining Would love to see that video in the future. :) I've got three Akai's, an Emu and I can confirm they really add to the sound. I couldn't achieve the same sound via plugins. I've heard about cases when complete tracks were bounced down to samplers to improve the sound :O The best old trick to glorify a sampler (that probably everyone knows by now) is to sample at high pitch and slow the sample down onboard (to save memory, mainly but then you get to hear all those crunchy audio artifacts.)
      A few more things came to my mind:
      • I think they sampled nearly everything in mono too, back in the day. Again, to save memory. So - lower sample rate, mono, high pitch on the input resulted a sample being only a few kilobytes on the sampler that's very handy if you work with let's say 4MB of ram and floppies. They didn't know it back then, but by doing all that they created a benchmark for the sound.
      • Cheap compressors on the drum/bass bus.
      • Many tunes have one or two endlessly playing pad, often layered. Like the same note of the pad plays for minutes, and arp or a key plays here and there. My guess here is that those were either hw synths with very long notes playing and a long release on the adsr... Or they were coming from a Roland sampler (S750, S760 maybe) that was able to play the sample back and forth while filtering.
      Here are a few more gems:
      St Etienne - The Sea (PFM Remix)
      Aquarius - Drift To The Centre
      Dj Crystl - Paradise
      JMJ & Richie - Free La Funk (PFM Remix)
      Intense - Careless Minds
      PFM - One & Only
      Big up and keep up the great work. :)

      Three Akai's is the dream! which ones have you got? I agree its hard to 100% emulate whats happening on the hardware but now i've heard it happening, I can get a lot closer in the DAW. That pitch up sampler rate trick is epic, I was obsessed when I first learn that. Will defs be in my vid going over all this. That mono trick is also great, I do it with my breaks a lot but its intresting that stuff made on Akai s950 would all have been mono. Even the S1000 is quite tedious to set things up in stereo. Such great tips mate, I'm going to add these to my video notes, thanks so much :) Tha layered sustained pad is such a great way of setting the ambience/vibe of the track, the other one is to resample the pads and play them like parallel chords, add more filter movement, pino-pongs etc. Cheers for the references also! Keep well dude :)✌️

      @@groovining I hope some of my input helped because what you do is very inspiring. I wish there were similar tutorials back in the day. That could have saved me a decate of research and practice, lol. Let me add that some pointed out earlier - you might just want to try the left or right channel of the break as mono. Take Amen, for example. Both channels have different characteristics and can lead to a different sound. I've got an S1100, two S2000s with an 8 out card. Emu Esi4000 Turbo, Sampletrak. Outboard fx, analogue synths and a Mackie. Sequencing without a daw, Zaquencer, MPC 500, Keystep.
