For me, Jacob’s music sounds like it is “supposed” to be analyzed, but that would take away from the sheer enjoyment that it gives me. I truly believe that this is just the way he hears the world, and he can’t help but do these arrangements this way. I don’t think he’s “flexing”, he’s just doing what comes naturally.
I can see what you mean, especially if its some of his earlier stuff - where dense/challenging harmony etc is what he is having fun with - that's the only times I ever see a new listener just get overwhelmed and bail, thinking "its too much" or "this must be for all those pro-music people." They can feel like there is an obligation to understand/appreciate all the insane things going on, which you don't have to at all and is actually just an optional enjoyment 'multiplier' haha
And that's a shame, because what he is also really good at - is holding back and doing whatever is best, even if it's simple, to get the emotion across.
I've been a musician about 15 years and was 'by ear and vibe' for about 10 of those, only started dipping into theory as and when it was interesting/useful in the past 5 - I think you can be vacant of any theory knowledge and be jump on the spaceship no problem - you just have to vibe with music in your life generally, feel it, and be willing to go where it takes you
For that reason I (and I recommend other Collier fans out doing some converting take this approach too) is to 'induct' a friend/new listener with stuff like "It Don't Matter", his "Fix You" cover or "All I Need" + some cuts from Djesse Vol 3 - this "All Night Long" cover is an amazing entry point too :)
If they vibe with these, then you can ramp up from there and let them jump down the rabbit hole at their own pace haha
If they're really into it, then you can take Moon River out of the hyperbolic chamber it needs to be stored in, place a hand on their shoulder and say "OK, just trust me - and let's watch this"
For those who don’t recognize them: Supporting vocalists are a group named Take 6. Actually a full circle moment for JC as they were one of his influences. The instrumentalists were the Metropole Orchestra (the same group who played with Snarky Puppy on the ‘Sylva’ album). This is classic JC with key changes which are impossible, yet he makes them sound organic. I would wager this was another of his 800+ lines of parts in Logic. His mastery of layering and production is genius almost to the point of being utterly disturbing. I hope he continues to make music, because the world is better for it.

I love Jacob's ability to sound like every member of Take 6 all at once at the same time by him when he stacks his vocals.

Man, I have a hard time listening to his music sometimes without welling up, even though I've heard the songs so many times before. Whether people like his "maximalist" approach or not, the connection this man has to music is something incredibly rare. I heard another youtuber saying "he understands music on a frequency level" and I think that's quite clear given how he's using microtones - in a way that adds to the emotional value of a song and not just to show off. Of course, it's probably hard not to show off a little when you're able to casually drum a 21/22 polyrhythm on your knees while on the subway (yep). You should give 'In the Bleak Midwinter' a listen, the harmonies in that one are out of this world - like watching an oddly beautiful alien! Heh what?!

Not sure whether it’s been mentioned but his mother Suzie Collier, a renowned violinist, also makes an appearance in this video.
It seems like a good number of people in the comments already have you set up quite well as far as Jacob is concerned. I’d like to throw my hat in the ring for Casey Blue Crescenzo/The Dear Hunter being next for artists/groups to check out. He writes in a different genre, but the genius is evident. Gloria from Act V, or Night on the Town from Act IV are great places to start, but their new album, Antimai, is a certified banger as well.
I listen to every kind of genre, I dont tend to limit myself to only jazz etc. I probably start uploading some heavy stuff, metals. Dream Theater.

I love the fact that I’m starting to see more and more reaction channels like yours popping up. The more we can get a variety of music in front of people that wouldn’t normally seek these things out, the more connected we become. I get goosebumps every time. 😂 His Magnum Opus for instrumentation. Looking at the credits, I get 130 musicians plus 3 remote camera/videographers = 133, ① ignoring those people in the New Orleans street, and the audience he 'conducted'.

He wrote the orchestration for the METROPOLE ORKEST in 6 hours using a midi keyboard. Take 6, the AEOLIANS, and Moroccan Gnawa were separate.
Apparently, Apple modified the LOGIC app after they learned about Moon River, to make it easier for him (or anyone comparable) to use.

In the UK, children first learn recorder or melodica at school. Then, traditionally, violin or piano. I grew up listening to '60s and '70s music which was heavily male dominated. So, I especially enjoy females playing rock on drums, lead and bass guitar, and "Kickin' It".
I'm old in comparison to you. My attitude to child musicians has evolved. Nowadays I'm happy for kids to try playing music, and delighted when they are as good as competent adult pros two, or more times their age. I like kids to just enjoy playing music, and it not be a chore. Though Yoyoka does deserve her DrummerWorld 'Top 500 drummer' accolade.

@@imstankface He has a brilliant, extremely curious mind. Comes from a very musical family. His mother is a professional concert violinist, conductor and teacher. Jacob seems to have been listening to and learning from an extremely wide range of musicians and musical styles from a very early age...and it shows.
