@@imstankface Dude!!! The part that blew me away in Jacob's "Moon River" - amongst other harmonic insanities - starts @ 8:06 of your reaction video where Jacob slowly bends upward the pitch of the entire "choir"!!!! Listen to it again and you'll hear it!!

You seem to have a handle on some music theory so you should definitely check out the Harmonic Analysis video by Listening In. This song uses something that is called microtonality and alternative tuning. It is not tuned in equal temperament like a piano. It starts off in A=440 (what most instruments are typically tuned to) but throughout the song, it changes to other tunings like A=332 and then A=453. Most don't even notice it is happening because of the way he is layering the chords.
This kid is literally on a whole other level.

just discovered microtonal frets for bass and guitar ... always hated the fight between a decent G and D chord ... looking at the frets ...thats where they have the most extreme angles ... and it sounds amazing

7:51 Is arguably the most impressive part of the whole song, as that note that extends across the whole section actually rises microtonally extremely slowly so that the chord progression can work properly. It’s a tiny tiny detail that is necessary to the entire final stretch of the song, and once you notice it it blows your mind!

His ability to actually sing that is mind-blowing, in and of itself. It's one thing to be brilliant enough to write something like that, but to actually sing a note held that long, while moving so slowly and precisely to keep "in tune" with the surrounding music is something else entirely.

Subscribed! I love seeing reactions to this song! Here's my Jacob Collier Moon River experience...
The first time I heard it, I immediately listened to it several times with awe & joy & wonder! Then my brain kinda metaphorically exploded, reassembled, & latched onto the Huckleberry Finn part towards the end that I call "The Jacob Collier Moon River Cave" & repeated it incessantly for weeks in a round. Over & over. I felt like I was sucked into that psychedelic cave in Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder in the boat, except instead, JC was the captain. I mean for weeks there was no silence in my brain, only Jacob Collier voices echoing... when I woke up, when I tried to sleep, every moment this part was playing in my head like a stuck record. I even tweeted @ JC something like "Help! I'm stuck in JC's Moon River cave!"
Mind you this was a purely musical non drug-induced trip. I am a huge music fan, but not a musician, so I could not begin to analyze the harmonies here. But it was an insane, blissful ride. The thing that snapped me out of it? Freddie Mercury's ad-libs & vocal riff at the end of Another One Bites The Dust. Out of the blue, I was stuck with that in my head for weeks as well. I guess something in my brain is... shall we say... askew. God help whomever has to take care of me in my old age, if my brain gets stuck on musical phrases like this in my 50s! Madness!

Getting spoiled, everyday a new Stank Face reacts. Thanks, just don't burn yourself out. As a small indication of Jacob's dedication. After the song was recorded he sang through the song 93 times to get all the shirt changes and vocal footage he'd need to make the final video (which he did with a video production company in CA). When you might feel like yet another Jacob change of pace try "Don't stop til you get enough" ruclips.net/video/KC3GrzoQG9U/видео.html He is using a very advanced, very expensive Yamaha programable piano which he then jams along with while singing. I always find it extraordinary how he interacts with what he has programmed, plus it just looks like magic. Check it out. And thanks again.

Maan, as long as you guys keep sending me these out of this world songs, there's nothing to get burnt out on. :D I listen to music everyday anyway, plus my daily job at the moment is also "somewhat" connected to music.
      - Also yeah... wack wack job with the music video. :D So much work. It amazes me how simple he makes it look because it just feels like that to him in the first place.
Ive added that one to the list!

@@imstankface I think in one sense it does just flow out of him, but! He also works incredibly hard and seemingly constantly on bringing his ideas to life. Looking forward to "Don't Stop" I have always found it amazing and it doesn't seem to get as much attention as some of his other videos. Which is a shame, as you'll no doubt experience. Looking forward to it. Thanks.

The way he uses microtonality doesn't really affect me too much since there's no reference point to hear it clearly. And with such tight clusters it's not really audible. I guess it would have sounded just as amazing in a "normal" 440. But it's cool to know that he's able to do that as well.
