- When I first did a Marantaceae (Prayer Plant family) care video a year or so ago (Ep 031), I had this named as "Calathea warszewiczii", and that's what most botanical gardens and plant sellers will have it named as well. But I suppose the new updated name is "Goeppertia" along with a number of other formerly known as "Calathea" plants. So this velvety number rings in at #147 of "365 Days of Plants".
I'll be touching upon where this plant is native to, how it grows, where I'm growing mine in my home, and other basic care tips.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

I have other ten Calatheas in my apartment, ranging from a massive Setosa, to a small Rattlesnake Plant. To keep them happy, I:
• Take some in the shower with me each time I shower;
• Mist (daily) and water (when top 1-2 inches of soil is dry) with filtered water (at bare minimum - tap water is a hell no);
• Keep all of mine in bright, indirect light;
• Use an Organic Fertiliser (at half recommend concentration) during growing season (or continue feeding if there is continued new growth);
• All of mine are happy and growing wildly, to be frank. Thanks for the video.
Merisha Everiste i will water with distilled but what about spraying it with tap water?
Do you cover the pot and soil when you shower? I'd worry about overwatering otherwise.
@@amandamejia7737 I wouldn't use tap water in anything related to these plants
Definitely the prima donna of my plant opera company! Fussy & high maintenance but when she takes the stage she's magnificent...
Love it! Hahaha
I've never had trouble with mine. It's been with me for about 6 years now and has survived the neglect brought on by my depression. It doesn't always look perfect, gets crispy leaves if I let it dry out, and one time it died back to completely underground, but it survives everything and bounces back.
This is my favorite plant out of all my plants!! Thanks for doing a video on it! I find that it really enjoys a good misting every morning.
Try putting a humidifier and your plant in a bath tub !
When my green-thumbed Mum was diagnosed with her illnesses, the garden she tended fell apart. And this plant was one of those in near-death which I salvaged. I love its rich colour. Anyway, thank you as always for the education. Now I know it's known as goeppertia and not calathea.
Awee. My favorite plant! She almost died and I moved her to my room on my nightstand where it's by an eastern window. She's well and healthy again. Thank you for the video!! Love it!
I just got this one about three weeks ago and she has been such a diva 😅 it’s surviving but Ive been struggling , I’m thankful for this video !!!!
This plant thrives in my home. I have it in my bathroom with a skylight. It’s always humid and never gets direct light. I only fertilize every other month April-October then not at all in the winter. It might just be my favorite plant
I just got one of these and it’s so beautiful. So glad to learn more about it.
Ahhh ! Salts! That's why all my prayer plants die on me. Water softener system. It's the only plant I've had issues with. Thank you for the enlightenment.
Mine is a little weird. I put it in my apartment and it lost all of the leaves, so I put the vase out in my balcony and forgot about it. Few weeks later it grows back healthier than ever. I tried to put it back in the apartment but it started to have brown edge. Right now it's out in my balcony under the scorching sun and it's doing so well with zero maintenance.
I found that when I misted mine (the first and ONLY time), some of the leaves started getting very small brown dots (perhaps from the water droplets). I figured that the fuzzy plants don't take too well to misting. ^_^ :P
That's part of it's fussy nature. It certainly loves a good morning mist but you must not let water settle & remain on the leaves 💦🌿🙈
I’ve been looking for a care video on this!! Thank you!
Thx for vids. So helpfull with being a beginner house plant caregiver. I recent found Cissus Discolor at my local box store. Loved the color and vining characteristics. So I brought home and have not been able to fine very much information on its care. Was hoping you might be able to do a vid on it.... Thank you in advance!
I just recently had to cut mine back and treat it because it had thrips. Other than that it grew so well and has such a gorgeous texture. I can’t wait for it to come back better than ever.
i got one recently, how do you know if your plant has thrips?
Hi! I was laughing when you said your chicken loves to eat this plant because my two cats love to munch on my prayer plant also and yes I agree with you these plants are so very fussy but they are so gorgeous so makes it worth it.
I just picked one of these up this morning! 😂😂😂😂
Good luck! Haha
Welcome to the headache club! 😂👍
mine two hours ago, it was love at first sight and i didnt know anything about it, that why i am here, im scared
On my wishlist but can’t find it in my local nursery. Such a beautiful calathea.
I randomly found one at Safeway! Keep looking, it may pop up somewhere!
I have this plant and it has started to get rippling on the ends, similar to puckering. I see no insects and usually keep the humidity at 60% ( it’s right next to the humidifier). It is so pretty and feels like velvet. I feed it distilled water but have had it next to the window. I will move it, any ideas about the puckering/ rippling? Thanks!
So beautiful Summer! But I'll pass on the high maintenance 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
This one in my home got spidermites... I treated it n now it seems ok... It gave me a lot of anxiety seeing mites on this on!!
thank you for sharing those tips :) would it survive with growlights in the bathroom?
I've switched to distilled water it has been a game changer.
My dog loves to gnaw at this 😂
Can you make a video on how to propagate this specific plant?!
When re-potting u can break a piece off of the plants with roots
I bought the green back variety l hvnt seen red back were l life yet.
Hello! My calathea is blooming right now, do you have any tips on pollination?
Mine had been super happy for months and months and suddenly isn’t doing as well. Lots of brown crispness out of nowhere. I also don’t recommend anyone misting it - there are spots on mine that were obviously from water damage (even with distilled).
Trying changing its pot. My calathea usually shows brown crisp when they've outgrown their pots. Other than that, it only has brown crisp when I first got it and try to adjust into a new environment.
I’m steering clear. My tap water is very hard and I’m not gonna pay for better water for my plants. I already pay plenty for my store bought drinking / cooking water.
Help me!! Mine keeps getting crunchy tips 😭
Thank you ! What about temperature?
I have a plant that looks similar but cannot identify it. It does flower but the bottom of the leaves are not purple. Any ideas?
I don't have any issues with water or humidity, but mine almost dried up from being underwater when I went away on vacation. It has since revived but the issue I've been having is that all the leaves come in super small? I thought they would grow in larger as it recovered more but it's been about a year now and still the leaves are coming in small... Anyone have any ideas?
If you have to fertilizer, feeding these with an all-natural source, like Seaweed/Kelp extract or even Moringa extract works great. They dont respond well to chemical fertilizers.
I have one that was doing amazing for months but suddenly had sticky sap on the underside. There isn’t much information out there on what could cause this. I don’t see any pests.
I have a couple of plants like this too! No pests just an odd sap in little dots on the backs of the leaves. I treat the plant as if it has thrips or spider mites by spraying it with a DIY pest spray (1tbsp mild soap mixed into 1 litre of water), leaving it for 20 minutes or so, and then washing it off. I find it helps but doesn't prevent the weird sap coming back...
Dont take it from me but it might be scale
@@alex0589 It's not scale. I've checked the plant all over for pests and there's nothing.
@@sophiedavies9161 it is an infestation, I got it from a baby cat palm that had tiny yellow spots on it I thought were just from too much sun on a young plant but no, It was spider mites and I do believe it is scale or something similar. It makes the plant look sick and sucks the life out of it till the leaves wither. I had to wash with dawn soap on a paper towel and rinsed. I thought it was gone but a couple months later I see it returning again a little and so I just cut a bunch of leaves off that were ugly and still damaged from the last time when they were babies and I am about to wash the new leaves again change the soil. Spray with neem and/ or insecticide, all of that, because it is seriously like herpes it just keeps coming back. I’m not sure how long it will take for it to be completely gone or if I need to do this every once and a while now indefinitely. All of my calatheas and my anthurium were affected. Separate it from your plants before it spreads.
@@ReisePiece Nope, it's not. I've had that plant for around 2 years now and there's no pests living on it, and the sap issue hasn't spread to other plants. I regularly treat it with the DIY pest spray mentioned in my previous comment. The plant is otherwise healthy and hasn't declined in condition or spread the issue to any other plants.
I gave mine superthrive 😳🤭😢 Not recommended!!!!
I usually give them fish fertilizer which it was fine with but then I got a Freddie and that lil 🤬 Corrupted my perfect Zebrina ..... with root aphids ! So I rinsed the roots & changed the soil which
They didn’t agree with! So I ended cutting all the leaves off and put the pots to the side in my dark humid bathroom with little to no light....to see what would happen (bc the bulbs were still good) After 2-3 weeks I looked over at “my precious” and was shocked to see a baby green stem popping up out of the soil about and inch and a half! And the Freddie had a leaf and stem popping out about 2 inches in total! To my shock they were coming back with a vengeance until I noticed root aphids in the soil again! So I rinsed them off, changed the soil, and put them in smaller planters.... I f’ed up by thinking superthrive was a great idea and I think that and all the trauma of rinsing , transporting and super thriving Made them mad at me! With calathea I’ve learned if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix em! Just water ( with distilled ) and walk away! I ordered a lemon-lime maranta.... I’m a little nervous about this one, I hope I do great with it! Also scheffleras I don’t know what in the heck my deal is but these plants HATE me? The first one I got was sick. I thought I could rehabilitate but I was too confident! I ended up putting it outside to see if that does any good. I bought another one that was seemingly healthy but it’s starting to mottle and look wilted ? I have under watered and may have given it superthrive too 🤭😞 I guess I won’t use st anymore
I got mine in the mail a week ago . All of its leaves are curled up. What should I do?
why mine collapsed all the leaves why??
Just to say your channel is extraordinary, I believe the pronunciation would be rather like this: varsheveechee, Warszewicz was a Polish botanist :-) Cheers
Think my humidifier can easily manage to hit 80% humidity in my house if i let it.
This plant sings 🎼 "Peel Me A Grape"🎤
2:39 did you just wink at me?? 😉😉😉
That Calathea looks sad and violated, must not liked being caressed 😂
The last name sounds Polish or maybe Slavic.
It is, named after polish botanist, Józef Warszewicz
@@szarykwadrat would the "w" not have a "v" sound then? I've always pronounced this one with the hard v like other Polish names are.
@@GreenFireflyGirl Indeed, it would. Moreover, "sz" is pronounced more-less like english "sh" and "cz" similar to "ch" in "Malkovich". The last "ii" like "ee" and "r" is hard, like in scottish accent. So, transcribing to english, it should sound like "Varshevichee" (I guess, it's a home-made transcription :)
@@szarykwadrat I know the ii is often pronounced ee-eye by english speakers, but have looked up the latin pronunciation to be i-ee which is really hard to say. I know Europeans say ee, which is a lot easier. One of my pet peeves though is when a person's name is butchered, not just the latin parts of the words... like Dieffenbachia, I never see people pronounce that one the way it should be for how the man's name was actually said!
Mine got smashed by pests, it's hanginging on but geeze it's sensitive
Too much of a Diva
Just threw this plant away!!! It was causing more stress with its crispy leaves. I wished this video came out months ago. I don’t have the right environment for this type of plant.
E Hender The bathroom? :)
She sounds and looks like Kourtney Kardashian. 🤣
True 😂😂😂😂
That plant looks really bad. You need to take care of it better
It did look limp
