  • In this episode, I share the care and propagation of the infamous goeppertia (formally calathea) orbifolia. Many, including myself, have killed this plant as the care can be confusing for newbies. Watch how I make them thrive and share tips on how to achieve a full pot of foliage. I also propagate, showing you 3 months update at the end!

Sean, I got my first calathea (a Dottie/black lipstick) a month and a half ago, and she's died back significantly and lost most of her leaves bc I didn't know how to take care of her at first! But after watching your videos, I think I finally got it down! I stuck her outside in the shade where it's more humid, gave her a mixture of cactus/succulent mix, perlite, and orchid bark in a clear plastic orchid pot (to check water/roots), and rainwater from the first time it rained this summer. And to my surprise, today I found that she's pushing out two new shoots! Thank you for making calathea care so simple and less frightening! They truly are resilient plants!

I love your channel! I learned so much. I just bought my first Orbifolia from a local nursery a couple of weeks ago. I just love the way they look, so beautiful! I’ll have to go back to the local nursery and see if they still have any left… they were on discount for half price for 3 euros 😅 I know they can be finicky but I’m more confident after watching your videos 🫶🏻

Great to see how easy they propagate by cuttings of the mother plants.
Mine is putting out 4 or 5 new leaves and has settled well next to a very large philodendron red Congo and micans.
Like you said an aerated, jungle soil mix makes all the difference and keeping the plant moist but not wet.
Love how you experiment and do these time lapse videos.
Not many plant enthusiasts do this.
So it makes your channel extra special.
    Cheers, Jo from NZ.

When the rhizome develops in width enough you can cut it and separate the little shoots, but those underground things are tubers and merely water and nutrient storage systems, not babies capable of reproducing. The more you have the better. They give energy to the plant, they don't take it away. They're not like corms on alocasias. I've had asparagus plants grow back from only roots and tubers after being cut down but they're invasive and far less sensitive than calatheas/goeppertias and it's the only case I've heard of that happening.

It would've worked if you'd put a plastic bag over the rhyzomes to create humidity.

Those underground tubers are not rhizomes on Calatheas, they are water tubers, that store water, so they are part of the root, no plant will come out of it, liko on Alocasias. :)

They are not babies they just hold water for the plant

I cringe every time I hear your wet sticks and other propagations are just out in the rain. EEEEK!!! Hope you can control it inside and away from second person over-waterers :D

These are strange plants...I bought one yesterday in the evening, from a supermarket...leaves were all flat down....when I later watered it, at about 8pm, I was shocked to see how large the small leaves looked...it's large, staring upwards!.wow, next day the leaves are still perfectly standing...probably it lacked water, but it's beautiful now...next, lots of roots popping out everywhere at the bottom...I don't know if I should re pot now or wait...?

I would repot it if its root bound but water a bit less than before because it can now hold more water for longer.
