Those who don't understand may laugh, but her voice(s), composition, and persona(s) are a national treasure. Few female artists do "Americana" better. She controls everything - her music is engineered - it's not ideally suited for live audiences (like Trent Reznor, or even Steely Dan). It often reminds me of growing up in the 70's, the promise of new relationships and their resulting heartache, watching 50's and 60's reruns on Saturday mornings, or seeing the sunset over our horse corral, or reveries of what my teacher's lives must have been like when they were 20 years younger, or seeing a classic car with some blemishes - to show it's been used for what it was meant for, and those early trips to Las Vegas where you only had enough money to get there and stay at a Motel 6, but nothing to gamble with.

@@kameraboi Just from personal observation after seeing a couple NIN concerts in the past - there are like "studio musicians" and there are "touring musicians" ... those musicians who are meticulous about their recorded content (sometimes doing 20, 30 even 40 takes to get it juuuuust right) often don't live up to expectations when seen live because of the reliance on hired-guns instead of relying ~purely on themselves in the studio. That's just my personal take. Obviously, studio environments allow for more freedom whereas a live stage performance gives the artist only one shot to give audiences what they expect (and Trent is (was?) prone to losing his temper when things didn't go right). Some of the worst live performers were electronica bands from the 80's, while some of the best were Prince, Led Zeppelin, and U2 (everyone's opinion is going to vary :) ).
Get out of here with your nonsensical explanations. Her music is great but she is simply a bad/lousy live performer. No amount of convoluted explanation can change that.

They've been hating on this perfomance since it happened, and i dont know why. This isnt her best perfomance but its really good and for me, its pleasnt to listen to
I remember going to some of my first concerts, back in the late 80's and initially being 'disapointed' because the group/artist didn't sound exactly like the released single. I came home and My Mom asked me if I had fun and if it was good. I said, "No! None of the songs sounded the same!" She laughed and said, "Oh hon! You DO realize that they record those songs in a studio? They record it countless times and then splice all the 'good' parts!" I just looked at her like the wisdom of Solomon was imparted on me. After that, there was no such thing as a 'bad' preformance! I was so fortunate to have a mother like her. Born in the 30's and still so cool! She loved all of my music and bands. She would ask me to make her mix-tapes! She was a nurse, and in charge of an entire department. She would put on one of my tapes and all of the younger nurses thought she was 'so cool' because she was up to date on the latest music. She honestly loved it. She wasn't even trying to be cool. She knew what she liked!
