Im a trained singer and I can tell that she’s just nervous. She’s much more confident with her live vocals now and I would LOVE to see her come back and blow everyone away!
I'm so proud of Lana because she is bringing these "terrible" performances back to the public. During the Born To Die era, which was her "breakthrough" album, it is nerve racking to put your self up there in front of an audience. I speak from experience. I am a dancer. I understand her emotions and choices during "Blue Jeans" and this performance of "Video Games".
I'm just getting into Lana and was shocked to see that this is actually hosted by her own page-I mean it in a good way. Most performers try to bury this kind of stuff. The meta of your body of work is important and interesting when artists, like Prince for example, take control of it.
No matter how bad anyone thinks this performance was, THIS VERY PERFORMANCE was what introduced me to Lana and I am grateful that she performed that night
It's so strange: when I first heard this performance, before I was familiar with her music, I too thought it was awful and embarrassing. But now, years later, when I listen to it again, being much more familiar with her ethereal, almost otherworldly deep voice that is certainly not traditional but definitely beautiful- I actually don't think this is bad at all. She was just nervous. Now that I am more familiar with how beautiful and strange and smooth her vocals can be, I hear it more, now. She is truly a gifted songwriter and singer.
I know in previous interviews Lana's done she says she naturally sings in a higher pitch and has been told to 'tone it down' by producers to make her songs more accessible. She may have been nervous here, but I feel the notes sounded off in some places as she was trying to sing in a lower pitch. The higher notes she hits in this performance are beautiful, and show her talent!!
She's a great American poet. I've only recently worked my through all her albums on Spotify, the sheer number of hauntingly vivid songs is phenomenal. She's in a league of her own.
I just started getting interested in her, would you mind listing some of your favorites? I like songs that give you that 'punch to the gut' type of feeling or like the knot in the back of your throat... lol. I guess a better way to describe my taste is VERY sad, depressing and like you said haunting songs. Songs about depression, addiction, abuse, toxicity, etc. and from what I've read about her work, that's like her niche. So far, my favorite song from her has been the one where she sings something like, "He hit me but it felt like a kiss. He hurt me but it felt like true love, he taught me that loving him was never enough???" I also enjoyed one where she's "a sweet serial killer drinking cherry coke," but mainly because it was so unexpected and honestly a total bop!
I think calling her a poet is a bit insulting to actual American poets. She's a songwriter who writes about the same topics over and over, and does it well, but it's not groundbreaking. Margaret Atwood, Maya Angelou, Edith Wharton, Langston Hughes, T.S. Elliot, those are poets ...
I remember everyone saying this was the worst performance ever, and now that I’m rewatching I see this is just her style and it was unusual so people were quick to judge. Love her so much!
Ironically, Lana was ahead of her time. Many peopls criticized this perfomance, but now they would see by a new perspective. Lana is a conceptual artist.
When marylin Monroe was alive they were incredibly cruel to her, they wouldn’t give it to her in any shape or form and destroy her for mistakes we all make. I see the same situation here with Lana ppl are being unnecessary cruel to her. She’s human she can’t be perfect.
I saw her live during her 2014 tour and she was AMAZING, I figured here she was just nervous. She found her voice and confidence. She did say in her monologue “I was a singer, not a very popular one” she’s a poet at heart ❤️
The moment 04:07 makes me cry. The way Lana sings "loving you" in the high register. Man, this performance was not bad to me at all. There are spots of beauty. I simply forget her turn-aroundings and listen to her music and singing. She is freaking and heavenly beautiful in this white dress.
I love the part 4:07 she was not bad in that performances idk why the ppl in that time was so mad and rude with her with her performance. Lana should back in SNL and show everybody that she can!!!! ❤️
Revisiting this performance since it was uploaded and it really isn’t bad at all. I don’t think anyone doubted her talent hence why Born To Die went on to become one of the longest charting female albums of all time and she’s still an acclaimed artist.
I love how she put a twist on this performance from the studio version and the way she can change her voices pitch and sound is so beautiful she really is such a great alternative artist
I was 14 years old when I saw this live on SNL, sitting in my kitchen watching the show with my mom late at night. It was my first time ever seeing or hearing Lana, and I just remember immediately thinking, "woah, who is this?" The chimes at the beginning of the song instantly grabbed me - it was like I was transported into Alice and Wonderland's world. Love you Lana - this performance was beautiful, and just the beginning of my forever-fandom to you!

I remember watching this the night it aired. I was hooked from the moment I saw her, and have loved her ever since. She looked so lovely and I thought the song was so hauntingly beautiful. To this day, I still don't know why she got so much shit for this performance.
The problem was not so much the performance itself, but the fact it was her first on tv after a huge success worlwide which made the public had very high expectations. It's obvious she was very nervous, which is to be expected for someone who had little experience as her, specially considering TV performances are not as forgiving as concerts. On the other hand, it's natural for people to feel disappointed when you see an artist that had such previous commercial success to flop in her first performance on live tv. It was unfortunate for both the artist and the audience.
@@clorox1676 Just seeing this, over a year later..But she was actually not at all a household name when this aired, so there was no high expectations. In fact, she was mostly unknown by most of the viewing audience, and I remember there was commentary that she wasn't big enough to be on SNL. I remember 2012 quite well, and people were making fun of her for her performance, for being awkward, for her fake name, for all sorts of things that had nothing to do with the performance. The narrative was that her dad bought her her career. It was all quite stupid, but it's what people online were saying about her.
I see nothing wrong with this performance. It’s very Lana. And I love Lana. I applaud her for being different. She has a singing voice others can’t copy. She is unique and we are lucky to be alive at the same time as this woman and witness the rarity of her sound.
I love you the first time I love you the last time Yo soy la princesa, comprende mis white lines 'Cause I'm your jazz singer And you're my cult leader I love you forever I love you forever
This is wonderful. Had she given this exact performance in 2023 it would have been hailed. Look at the young new female artists of today. This is a vocal style today, not just a nervous young woman on national TV.
@@realitycheck2051 Are you guys serious... ?? From a musical standpoint, it's hot garbage. Inconsistent tone, pitchy, weird and sporadic enunciation, pronunciation changes phrase-to-phrase as if she's unsure of what works... the list goes on. There are a few moments where she genuinely sings well, but those are a few phrases among a sea of aforementioned hot garbage. Nowadays she has GREAT live performances. Taylor M Her tones are always inconsistent and weird, that’s why her fans...me and others...love her. She’s no normal singer, I like it and didn’t think it was that bad. Also that song is hard to sing, it’s obviously not going to sound like the studio version.

Got me spinning like a ballerina
Just realised I replied to a comment u left one year ago k bye welcome back
sue me but I love the "every little thing that I do" at 1:06
3:06
I dunnk why but that part was soooooooooo in my mind like wtf, the whole performance was great tbh but that part is stuck in my mind woah...
I DON'T CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY, THIS IS MY OPINION AND SHE IS THE BEST.
Only worth living if somebody is loving you. That part is one of the realest lines
THE TURN! ICONIC!
2024 and appreciating this beauty!
And I love this performance.
1:45 a historic moment
Lana is love, Lana is life.
she ate em up in coachella
3:59 if this is not incredibly singing I don't know how else to call it
I FUCKING LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE. SHES SO ICONIC. GORGEOUS VOICE. Shes just a bit nervous. CAUSE OBVIOUSLY, SING IN FRONT OF THE WORLD THIS HARD MUSIC
Her voice is great-- the song is tough as it gets.
Ppl really exaggerated when they said that her snl performances were bad, they’re perfectly fine imo, she sounds amazing 🙆🏻♂️👏🏻
I see nothing wrong with this performance. It’s very Lana. And I love Lana. I applaud her for being different. She has a singing voice others can’t copy. She is unique and we are lucky to be alive at the same time as this woman and witness the rarity of her sound.
I love you the first time
I love you the last time
Yo soy la princesa, comprende mis white lines
'Cause I'm your jazz singer
And you're my cult leader
I love you forever
I love you forever
Love you so much Lanita 🖤
This is wonderful. Had she given this exact performance in 2023 it would have been hailed. Look at the young new female artists of today. This is a vocal style today, not just a nervous young woman on national TV.
quite literally one of my fav performances
How is this bad?, this is pure gold
this isn't bad, sue me
It's not, indeed
Yeah it is. Stream die lit
It’s actually not bad at all. They can sue me too lol
Everyone has off days, and this was so off it almost comes back around to on, in the form of some sort of intentionally garbage, esoteric, artistic statement on the state of the music industry, man.
Taylor M
Her tones are always inconsistent and weird, that’s why her fans...me and others...love her. She’s no normal singer, I like it and didn’t think it was that bad. Also that song is hard to sing, it’s obviously not going to sound like the studio version.
I’ve always unironically loved this. It hits
for those who can actually have an open mind, go listen to the actual recording and see what an amazingly well-arranged song it is. she was nervous. makes me love her even more.
Its not even bad . Keep it up Lana ur great. Just a fan from India.
It was in 2012
🌼
Everything is Relevant let’s not kid ourselves this was a terrible performance. I’m a fan of Lana and her voice has improved since then, and yes she was nervous, but this was terrible. She screwed up. Don’t cut slack cause you like her music, just appreciate how much her voice has improved.
I will say that blue jeans is far worse though, as far as her SNL performances are concerned.
@@dingleberry5356 I didn't think anything was wrong with either one. Apparently I don't have your sophisticated critic skills.
She does voices all the time. Is that what you guys don't like? I think they're really fun. Het voices on "off to the races" are great.
I remember seeing this live and thinking, she sounds a little off but there’s something special there. I loved the lyrics to the song and looked up the album version immediately.
I remember seeing this when it was broadcast, and thinking it was waaaay waaay worse. Honestly, I think it was so different from everything else at the time, it seemed a lot wonkier. In reality, she sounds fine.
honestly dan is a king for backing up my lana this performance is iconic
4:15 was so good
0:48 HOnEy
It’s makes me so sad that this is the only live performance people reference when talking about her... she’s had so many amazing performances that they need to hear
her vocals are clear and strong. I don't understand the problem people had.
This performance of Video Games is heartbreaking and so beautiful. Try just listening to the audio without looking at the video. It completely changes your understanding of what she is attempting to communicate with her voice. Going back now for one more listen...
she was just awkward and nervous - never off-pitch or out of tune. I can't believe she was so criticized for this. What a bunch of haters. Some pop stars can barely even carry a tune.
It’s really not even as bad as everyone makes it out - you can tell she’s nervous because her live performances are so good
Listen to her Blue Jeans performance of the same night. Way more iconic
Daniel flopped with that opening more than Lana did with her performance.
Oh I just love her so much
this is one of the best renditions ever idk why people hate on it
This performance is her style of ART
