The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

Legend has it that there is this Tarrasch book lost somewhere throughout the land. A piece of vast knowledge which is said was ordered by the great hero of chess, Agadmator, but never touched.
It is said that only through the power of excellent subscribers that Agadmator will be able to get such a precious artifact once more and restore the balance of black and white chess pieces to the world.
That was nice of Nimzo to not simply resign after he was totally bust on the kingside.
That's why I miss this era of chess, where the humble way of ending a game is to not resign and to finish the masterpiece.
Once in a time I really have to point out that I became a huge fan of your RUclips channel throughout the last week. Normally I am not the kind of person taking his time to write a complementing comment under someones videos, but in this case I really can't deny to do so. You could say I indeed got addicted to the beautiful game of chess only by listening to your exellent commentarys and couldn't imagine something more appealing right now than becoming a professional chess player one day.

I just played a game on Lichess after which the opponent accused me of being a computer player and I should be prepared for a report!! That made my day. I just played the Traxler attack which I learned on @agadmator 's chess channel in response to his fried liver attack. Totally crushed him! Of course, he immediately thought I must be cheating. What a noob!

When Tarrasch was a small boy of six years old, at the school where he studied, the students were required to demonstrate in some way their literacy - to show what they could write. Many students did it right in the classroom, writing on the blackboard a few pre-memorized sentences from the alphabet. Some recorded something dictated by the teacher.
Siegbert Tarrasch decided to perform this task differently than his classmates. He brought a chalkboard written in chalk to his teacher. For a couple of minutes, the teacher stared, perplexed, at this wooden “tablet”, dotted with gibberish of letters and numbers, completely unaware of what was written there. And then he said: - Fine, my boy! But what did you write here? ...

Interesting. Both sides had doubled up bishops on the center diagonals creating kingside threats. What seemed like an exposed weakness when black pushed his g pawn to kick back the white knight ended up being his saving grace. White had a chance to push that same pawn to protect his king and he missed the move and lost.
That king must have been so tired from walking so much he just conceded

I love it when the masters play all the way to the checkmate. It is great to see the execution of all the brilliancy that preceded it. Also, even when the mate is forced, I think it is a gracious way for the losing player to give kudos to the victor. Finally, it is good for the spectators - especially learners. I wish this happened more often.
Tarrasch... probably the best player to never become world champion.
I like these older games better from a learning point of view - because it feels more accessible. Modern chess tends to turn on "engine" moves that are sometimes a little too abstract for me.

tarrasch looks like a villain who would show up in an austin powers movie.
what a beautiful game, a checkmate with the white king on your side of the board and a checkmate in one prepared for the white pieces.
10:30 - nice choice of words, "aesthetically pleasing checkmate". But for other reviewers or reactors, they called this a sadistic checkmate in history since Tarrasch had some detestation to Nimzowitsch and that endgame was fuelled by sadism. Hehe
Yeah Dr.Tarrasch was indeed Master of Bishop Pair.
I read somewhere that the reason Tarrasch didn't win the first brilliancy prize was because of its similarity to the Lasker-Bauer game. Maybe he should have shared the brilliancy prize with Capa. Also, it must have been extremely satisfying for Tarrasch to beat Nimzovich since they were rivals (the old guard vs. the new young theorists). Maybe that's why Tarrasch preferred the embarrassing bishop checkmate line at the end.
Your comment about the fact that Lasker was also present at this tournament might sway the award committee was also spot on. Thanks and have a great one yourself.

The deeper knowledge of the game make contemporary player be more cautious
@@manu-ox4fe I would say that it's less about a deeper understanding and more about memorizing lines. These players typically seem to only play for a draw once they are behind. Today, players don't play for a win until they are ahead.
I still remember the first times learn and play chess, I couldn't sleep that night by keep seeing all items moving in chess board even closing my eyes. 😒

I read in a book they hated each other, and he wanted Nimzowitsch to suffer. He saw the quick mate, but purposefully humiliated him with his king being on d7 in the final position.
If they hated each other then it is interesting that Nimzowitsch allowed the checkmate then. Another comment said that he respected the play and allowed it. Different times and all.
@@cramthelan I read that Nimzowitsch was a _sadist,_ and would do such things on the chessboard when his dominatrix was travelling (usually to Rome to buy more leather).

@@fabianhauser708 that's indeed super interesting. It's kind of embarrassing to get your king to the 7nd rank because your opponent has a net. I would resign for sure. My guess is that he saw the mate in 2-3 moves but he didn't see the mate in 7 right away. So he was like "haha I got you" (yeah like that would ever happen bt either player. They wouldn't blunder) but then, by the time he realised he was lost (forced 7) it was too late.
Yesterday, March 5, was Siegbert Tarrasch’s birthday (as was mine).
This game was much cooler than Capablanca's. He's just not as flashy, probably because he's lazy and he doesn't like to calculate ;)
IMO resigning almost shouldn't be allowed. People should play through to checkmate... you might find you're not as good at it as you think and it's just good practice to be chased around, trying to get easy points and reverse positions, and it's also good practice to have to kill the rabbit with your own hands... so to speak.
5:06 min what if e takes f with check as a Zwischenzug? Wouldnt that work for black to expose the king and win a pawn? Am i missing something im new to chess and usually do

Damn i just realized a typical mistake i make in calculations queen can block the check on f2. Trading queens wouldnt be too good cause black has 3 pawn islands while white has 2 but its not particularly bad to go for that line i think. There might be some tricks with moving the black bishop to protect the queen while opening an attack from the rook on to the undefended knight... So maybe bf4? What can white do about it then?

@Oissev Onos i mean same variation i mentioned in my first answer where i missed that queen can block check on f2 after taking f6. So qf6, ...qe3+, qf2, ...bf4.
And in case you meant where does qe3+ you probably didnt see the first variation which was: after f6 blocking, white does rxf6 then black goes rxf6, white takes the rook qxf6 and black avoids queen trade and goes qe3+
@Oissev Onos yes but there's no reason not to do it cause its piece winning for black. I just checked with the engine. If he trades rooks, then gives a check on e3 he either wins the queen if white doesnt block or white loses a knight with queen blocking then bf4.
