    I visited Alekhine's grave in Paris few weeks ago. He's got a nice board on it, was commissioned by the FIDE at the time, in the 50's maybe. It says "Here lies Alexandre Alekhine, chess genius of Russia and France, 1892-1946 world champion from 1927 to 1935, and from 1937 to his death.
    Very moving moment, if you come to Paris, visit his monument at the montparnasse graveyard.

    This famous "bishop check" reminded me a french citation of alekhine (yes he was french at some point) : "Deux fous gagnent, mais jamais trois". Here alekhine plays on the fact that, bishop and fool both translate to "fou" in french. So this literraly means : two bishop/fool win, but never three. That means, that with two bishop you win, but if yourself a fool, you don't.

    Hey Agadmator. I hope it is okay that I ask questions on one of your old videos (I am binge-watching your channel). I cannot help wondering why white didn't play Nc3 after black had played Qc4. Would that not have been a perfect defense to Alekhine's "Execution"?

  • @TheNaKio
    @TheNaKio 7 лет назад +1

    I heard a 1930's 6 minute radio interview of Alekhine, in English. The interviewer pronounced it:
    "al YEKK inn" (yes with a 'Y' sound; and he called him "Doctor Alekhine"). This is the correct way of pronouncing his name.

    • @agadmator
      @agadmator  7 лет назад +2

      It depends in which country the radio recording is from. You know, here in Croatia, we call him Aljehin :)

    • @Scaw
      @Scaw 7 лет назад +3

      I imagine that the Croatian pronunciation of Aljehin is close to the correct Russian one. The usual "aleKINE" as uttered in England and America is very wrong.

      hin (in HINder)
      its similar how rusian say Alyo (Hello) when they pick up the phone the problem for most is the YO sound that is in New YOrk
      russians write this sound with one letter: ё (not the way its used in Tiёsto - which is yeah sound as opposed to Yo)

    Love your videos, dear sir. Just watched Two Magicians video and I would also like to see their casual blitz games, although I'm sure nothing was too casual with two chess rocketscientists like that in one room. ;)
    Can't wait for more Nezhmetdinov games and your upcoming videos. I really appreciate the bits of history associated with these brilliant minds. It really adds depth to the games and makes them more personal. Like the man walking around making dinner plans in his head while Rashid is making Queen soup on the board. It feels like you are interested in them as people and not just chess players, and I like that, as I'm sure many do. It makes the games more about life and not just about black and white pieces of wood. Thank you for all your videos and keep 'em coming.
    P.S. Where are you from? Is it bad if I say you look Polish? XD Somewhere Slavic perhaps... haha. =)
    I feel you can speak Russian. Love your intonations. ;)

      +Michelangelo Adamantiel Thank you so much for this comment, Michelangle. I'm glad you enjoy some history about the players, that is what I enjoy more than the game itself. Well, almost :) You're not far, I'm from Croatia, and although I can't speak Russian, I do understsnd it :) Again, thank you for this wonderful comment :)

    • @michelangeloadamantiel7685
      @michelangeloadamantiel7685 7 лет назад

      Ha, yeah, almost! Croatia! Ok then! I only know one guy from Croatia, Mirko Crocop, and I don't even know him personally, ha. You understand Russian ok good, next time I type in Russian (even though it takes me about 10 years to use Russian keyboard to type one sentence). Maybe Croatian is similar here and there to Russian. Do you have a favorite idiom in Croatian that there is no equivalent of in English?
      "Again, thank you for this wonderful comment :)"
      You're welcome sir. Perhaps later I will make you some chess art or just some art in general. Do you like comics, manga or Frank Frazetta type stuff? I do. Frazetta is like the Tal of fantasy painting. It's fine art for fantasy lovers (and not just fantasy but the deepest emotions of the human soul in action!), the best of the absolute best, and before that, he was only doing small comic strips and movie posters. No one knew he had it in him til he started doing oil painting what a master he'd become. It's a shame he didn't start sooner like Tal (with oil painting, because he first started working at age 16).
      If you haven't seen the documentary "Painting with Fire," you might enjoy it very much. They show Frank in his older years just walking around and talking with friends, along with all his incredible art. People also talk about what makes him so unique among artists. Might also give you good ideas for chess videos, for as Alekhine said, "Chess for me is not a game, but an art. Yes, and I take upon myself all those responsibilities which an art imposes on its adherents."
      "I believe that true beauty of chess is more than enough to satisfy all possible demands."
      And I believe that the true beauty of life is captured brilliantly in Frank Frazetta the person, Frank Frazetta the artist, and Frank Frazetta the artwork. Alekhine and Frazetta might have been good friends. I'd love for them all to be alive at one time; Liszt, Chopin, Paganini, Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Tal, Alekhine, Kasparov, Bobby Fischer, Keres, Nezhmetdinov, Gustave Dore, Simon Bisley, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Wang Kewei, and many more. But to have those people in the same room or in the same life discussing ways to improve upon their arts... my mind would explode in extreme happiness. I wouldn't be able to take the beauty produced.
