I would love to hit the club and show everybody the boston immortal, It would most defenitly get me all the girls there :) thanks for improving my vast knowledge
Karpov, behind him Ljubomir Ljubojević, the player on the right is Jan Timman and on the left I think it's Tony Miles. I enjoyed seeing this game, as I've had already heard of the Boston Immortal, but I didn't know the game. So Agadmator once again improved my "vast" knowledge of chess! ;-)
Some favorites of mine you may like: Hermann Hesses' "Steppenwolf" and/or "Narcissus and Goldmund"; Kurt Vonneguts' "Slaughterhouse Five" and/or "Cats Cradle"; and Dostoyevskys' "Notes from Underground". Caution, my taste in reading does run to the dark side so if you have a problem with depression . . . but I doubt it, since your videos are always so cheerful. Thank you for all of your entertaining uploads.
9:10 there are two mate in fours in this position. One is of course the one you showed, and second is: 1. Nxh8+ Kd8 2. Nf7+ Ke8 3. Nd6+ Kd8 4. Qe8# But of course, sacrificing the queen and mating with the Knight, that too a smothered mate, is much cooler.
Been watching for years I have yet to perform a smothered checkmate in my personal games. I just wanna jump out my seat from my calm demeanor and say it loudly CHECKMATE!! All because of you AGADMATOR 😎
What about this ( last four moves ) knight ( g6 ) takes rook ( H8 ) Check. Knight ( H8 ) to F7. Check. knight ( F7 ) to D6 Check. Queen ( H5 ) to E8 or F7 depending on what the king does. Checkmate
im wondering if this mating sequence would also work? Taking the rook and checkmating with queen instead of a smothered mate is quicker right? Nh8+ Kd8, Nf7+ Ke8, Nd6+ Kd8, Qe7#
back in the early 90s ..there were always a few people who would talk about an up and coming player named alexander khalifman...his early games had very unique lines..some outrageous sacrifices and a graceful originality about them ...eventually he became a champion in 1999...but some of his earlier tournament games were nothing short of incredible...
That was amazing. He sacrificed every single piece, black had overwhelming material advantage, to add icing on the cake he sacrifices his queen in the second to last move to get black to beat his own self.
At 9:03 i think you can also capture the rook, this was my idea: Nx h8+ Kd8 Nf7+ Ke8 Nd6++ Kd8 Qe8# . This is a move shorter. Do i overlook something or am i an excellent attacker?
18.Nh8 Kd8 first take a rook with check 19.Nf7 Ke8 20. Nd6 and next move is checkmate Qe8 or Qf7 , it is fastest wining, but smothered mate is more elegant...
Agadmator, what a crazy match! I really enjoy reading Russian classics like Dostoevsky just because they are extremely dramatic and are not too far off from reality. My favorite chess books are Persona non grata, a book on Kortchnoi's match with Karpov. Very interesting book which focuses on the politics of chess during his match, and some other drama. Also has some minor chess analysis. The Luzhin Defense by Vladimir Nabokov is about a chess player who goes nuts.
#suggestion Agadmator, please, I’m sure that both you and your subscribers would love the game played in Sanremo in 1930 between Efim Bogoljubov and Mario Monticelli. You are not likely to see a super-player like Bogolijbov crushed in such a beatiful way. Thank you!
9:10 Wouldn't Knight take h8 with check -> King forced to d8 -> knight f7 with check -> King forced back to e8 -> Knight d6 with double check -> King forced back to d8 -> Queen e8 check mate work as well? Or am I missing something?
I love it when my opponent plays along and allows me to smother him! One of my greatest ever combinations was a mate in 6 from an apparently equal position after my opponent just moved his queen where he shouldn't have.
The mate may be the nicest, but firstly it's mate in 5 and not mate in 4. Secondly, there is a faster mate with 18. Nxh8+ Kd8 (Kf8 runs into Qf7#) 19. Nf7+ Ke8 20. Nd6+ Kd8 and black gets to choose which mate he prefers: 21. Kf8 Qf7# OR 21. Kd8 Qe8#
Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind is a very good fantasy novel, the first in a trilogy. He was my neighbor growing up as well. That would be my suggestion as I figure you'd be into it since I know you play Hearthstone!
I found Nxh8 to be winning and thought myself to be an excellent attacker, then you went 'The move you had to find is Ne5'. Nevertheless Ne5 is mate in 5 and Nh8 is mate in 4 (I literally had to look up the engine to make sure I was right). Thanks Antonio
i found a different check mate on 8:50 first knight captures rook (king moves to d8), then knight to f7 (king moves back to e8), then knight to d6(king back to d8) and finally queen to e8 check mate.
knight captures rook with check h8 - king d8 -knight back to f7 check - king e8 - knight d6 check and whatever black plays queen e8 or f7 is forced checkmate in 4 aswell. the guy in the photo is karpov btw.
#suggestion you could make a short series about how computers became better than humans. Some key matches. And also I am very interested in the back story, if you have time to research
He is from croatia!? Wow, i really didnt know, i thought he was English or something. I'm argentinian , we are all so pumped for the Match here , let the best win!
I had a different variation of the mate in four where knight takes bishop, then after 2 moves its ok for a queen to come to E8 (while protected by the knight ofc) , its not a smothered check mate thou.
There was other Checkmate in 4 in that position knight simply takes rook after that with the same idea and in the last queen to e8 will be check mate.. Checkmate played in game was mate in 5
Hi agadmator, you deserve the Chess medal of valor for wearing that hoodie! I saw one of your immortal videos by a Federov? and pietrov? which you said started of normal enough. I cannot find it now, do you remember it and can you please send me a link.
I tried impressing my friends with the Boston Immortal AND my vast knowledge of the 1959 Candidates Tournament. The entire room was completely under my mental influence, responding to my every command, like Professor X.
Fun game. I love the classics because they often preferred an open board. I’ve never been able to use the Danish gambit against better opponents. It pretty much only works against weaker players. I still like though. The game is almost guaranteed to be over in 20 moves one way or the other.
i found a faster checkmate well because the shown one is in five... but four is possible with capturing the rook first, the king has to move to the same square as on f1 he still gets checkmated, then knight to f2 check, king e1, knight d3 check, king d1 leads to quen e1 checkmate and king f1 leads to quen f2 checkmate
Congratulations on the channel, agadmator. I keep track of your videos, though I've never interacted before. Will you have a live when you reach 200k of subscribers?
agadmator's Chess Channel Please do a 200k sub tournament at thursday night (perhaps 6pm onwards) so that I could join. Anyways congratulations and looking forward to that 200k subs! Edit: I blundered! I messed up the day, I mean friday night (in croatian time) and it should be around saturday midnight here in the philippines.
8:57 I've found Knight capture rook with a discovered check. the king has to move to d8. Then Knight f7 the king has to go back to e8 then knight d6 a double check from the knight and the queen the king has to go again to d8 and then queen e8 checkmate.
These is smother mate in 5, also there is mate in four moves. Knight H8, discoveret check by the queen, King to d8, knigt f7 check , king e 8,knight d4 double check from the knight and the queen, king d8, and queen on e8 is check mate....
EDIT: My line is the same length. Couldn't that 4 move mate have been done by taking the Rook? NxH8, KD7, NF7, KE8, ND6, KD8, QE8 mate, or NxH8, KF8, QF7 mate. Am I missing something?
What if you "follow" the steps of your national team in the World Cup by showing games between masters from Croatia against Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland?
checkmate can be too knight captures on h8-king to d8, knight to f7 check-king to e8, knight to d6- king to d8 or f8 and then queen to e8 or f7 checkmate. is this true? react if it is not good
i love imagining walking into a boston bar and pulling out a chessboard and everybody just goes nuts for the boston immortal instead of beating me up
I would love to hit the club and show everybody the boston immortal, It would most defenitly get me all the girls there :) thanks for improving my vast knowledge
EU Dawn lol
EU Dawn And maybe you can even show them the 1959 candidates tournament.
Fred Smith that is an awesome idea, everybody needs that vast knowledge
Lol
Pro tip : you can watch series on flixzone. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies during the lockdown.
Thank you, now I can impress my crush by showing her this game
Wow, that foto-challenge is really amazing! I thought I would never find any picture of that famous Jimmy Page vs Robert Plant game! Thank you!
Karpov and Ljubojević, looking at Miles vs Timman
That's a very vast knowledge! Congratz!
ive seen the picture before
im sure @dgriffinchess tweeted this picture also i started following him since the picture challenge came in place. he has alot of pictures
I didn't even see this answer! I'm just glad that I guessed right!
Im very impressed!
Having a hoodie on 32 degrees celsius (here in Zagreb atleast)? You're a mad man haha, but you do keep your promises!
I barely made it to the end of the video :)
Agadmator going the extra mile 😎
A Harry Potter reference while cosplaying a dementor? What is this? A crossover episode?
what the fuck is this comment
Was that a Bojack Horseman reference?
Yes it is
Skanky Toast a sitcom CROSSOVER?
Musquet I. IS THAT A JOJO REFERENCE!??
Thanks agadmator for showing us one of the craziest games ever
Damn man, your analysis has improved so much since I subscribed. A real pleasure to see your progress. Your victories are ours, my friend.
Karpov, behind him Ljubomir Ljubojević, the player on the right is Jan Timman and on the left I think it's Tony Miles. I enjoyed seeing this game, as I've had already heard of the Boston Immortal, but I didn't know the game. So Agadmator once again improved my "vast" knowledge of chess! ;-)

Just for the record: the mate Agadmator showed is a mate in 5: knight goes to e5, f7, d6, f7 and queen goes to e8.
Been watching for years I have yet to perform a smothered checkmate in my personal games. I just wanna jump out my seat from my calm demeanor and say it loudly CHECKMATE!! All because of you AGADMATOR 😎
All your videos feel like I was there watching🐣🔥👍
Just wanted to mention how I love your channel..seen most of your videos
and its made me fall in love with chess all over again
I want to increase my vast knowledge..thanks for the brilliant game and nice commentator.
Thank you agadmator... I improve my positional game because of you . My current rating is 1930 because of you
Congratulations!!! Great match! :)
" Dumb L dore " congratulations, you're an excellent maker of puns
Killer Game!.... Gotta love the classics !
at 9:05, Nxh8 also leads to a mate, which is 1 move faster than Ne5.
Nxh8+ Kd8, Nf7+ Ke8, Nd6+ Kd8, Qe8#
What about this ( last four moves ) knight ( g6 ) takes rook ( H8 ) Check.
Knight ( H8 ) to F7. Check.

what about nh8 kd8, nf8+ ke8, ne6+ kd8, qe8# in that last position?
It's *nf7+ then nd6+ but other than that it works too but a smothered mate looks better :D
I came up with that as well👍
Me too
Me 3
The one adgamator showed was mate in 5 though. So technically 18. nxh8+ is the better continuation. I agree though, a smuttered mate looks better :)
That was amazing. He sacrificed every single piece, black had overwhelming material advantage, to add icing on the cake he sacrifices his queen in the second to last move to get black to beat his own self.
Behind the game: Anatoly Karpov, Rafael Vaganian Playing the game: Tony Miles (left) vs Jan Timman (right)
Ahh Lubo not Raffy but excellent score by salah abbas
@@jessicafischerqueen the 2 gentleman playing the game look like 70’s rockstar
"Dumb L Dore" LOOOOL, laughed so hard. Coming from Reydama's review of this game.
the smothered mate idea is amazing, especially considering black is up 2 rooks and 2 pieces. Beautiful mating picture
At 9:03 i think you can also capture the rook, this was my idea: Nx h8+ Kd8 Nf7+ Ke8 Nd6++ Kd8 Qe8# . This is a move shorter. Do i overlook something or am i an excellent attacker?
oho the hoodie is back
Hey agad, just want to congratulate you for the upcoming 200k.
And by some stroke of luck, maybe Croatia can win...
18.Nh8 Kd8 first take a rook with check 19.Nf7 Ke8 20. Nd6 and next move is checkmate Qe8 or Qf7 , it is fastest wining, but smothered mate is more elegant...
Agadmator, what a crazy match!

smothered mate as well, right? I second to that!
An Arch Actually not... it’s more beatiful than this game and than a smothered mate! I really hope Agad will show you that game one day...
I really like this channel and your personality.
Just want to let you know :P
9:10 Wouldn't Knight take h8 with check -> King forced to d8 -> knight f7 with check -> King forced back to e8 -> Knight d6 with double check -> King forced back to d8 -> Queen e8 check mate work as well? Or am I missing something?
Whoa, looks like the Argentine goalkeeper just "blundered" 😂
2-0 now with just ten min to go!
3-0 after 90! I love it!
I love it when my opponent plays along and allows me to smother him! One of my greatest ever combinations was a mate in 6 from an apparently equal position after my opponent just moved his queen where he shouldn't have.
What do you use to display games? I want to know because the pieces look very nice : )
Hey agadmator, I have a really funny cat video you will love to see!
:P
I found Nxh8 to be winning and thought myself to be an excellent attacker, then you went 'The move you had to find is Ne5'. Nevertheless Ne5 is mate in 5 and Nh8 is mate in 4 (I literally had to look up the engine to make sure I was right). Thanks Antonio

At this point, it's clear that your dog is waiting for the webcam to turn on. "It's SHOWTIME"
knight captures rook with check h8 - king d8 -knight back to f7 check - king e8 - knight d6 check and whatever black plays queen e8 or f7 is forced checkmate in 4 aswell. the guy in the photo is karpov btw.
#suggestion you could make a short series about how computers became better than humans. Some key matches. And also I am very interested in the back story, if you have time to research
Hello Agadmator, I actually found a mate in 4, instead of 5, with 1.Nxh8+ Kd8 2.Nf7+ Ke8 3.Nd6+ Kd8 and of course, 4.Qe8#
Best luck in the Croatia vs Argentina (football) match! It's a hard task, but not impossible.
He is from croatia!? Wow, i really didnt know, i thought he was English or something. I'm argentinian , we are all so pumped for the Match here , let the best win!
I’m also from argentina
The Big Electron Woom Woum His accent doesn't sound English at all haha
3-0 final score! - complete annihilation!! Antonio must be celebrating so hard right now!
Jason Boutsias yeah Argentina is terrible this year.
I had a different variation of the mate in four where knight takes bishop, then after 2 moves its ok for a queen to come to E8 (while protected by the knight ofc) , its not a smothered check mate thou.
9:12 can't the knight capture on h8 followed by ...Kd8 Nf7?
That's what I had in mind as well, and in my opinion, that's a much better checkmate variation.
Jonathan Cao yes that variation works with a mate in 4
1-knxh8+ kd8 2-knf7+ ke8 3-knd6+ kd8 4-Qe8#
Yes, it's also technically a better variation, since it's mate in 4 instead 5. Smuttered mate looks better though ;)
Yeah i found that variation as well, its faster but not a pretty smother mate :p
Smothered mate is about the most impressive checkmate you can do. People back then played as artists.
That close-up of the cat though!
There was other Checkmate in 4 in that position knight simply takes rook after that with the same idea and in the last queen to e8 will be check mate..
Checkmate played in game was mate in 5
I found a different mate in four that didn't involve a queen sac. Kh8, Kf7, Kd6, and then Qe8 or Qf7, depending on where the king moves.
Greetings from Washington state in the great northwest! Love your channel brother. I’m an addict
At 9:13, Nh8+ will also lead to force checkmate in 4 steps
watching this game after anand- carlsen classic series = mind explodes.
Congratulations to the Croatian football team for making the round of top 16...an exceptional gameplay and well deserved victory...
Hi agadmator, you deserve the Chess medal of valor for wearing that hoodie! I saw one of your immortal videos by a Federov? and pietrov? which you said started of normal enough. I cannot find it now, do you remember it and can you please send me a link.
I didn't expect such a scoreline...!
The line you showed at the end starting with Ne5+ is mate in five, not four. Instead Nxh8+ is mate in four, but not smothered.
I was going improve my dance in the club but i guess now I'll just take my chess board with me
I tried impressing my friends with the Boston Immortal AND my vast knowledge of the 1959 Candidates Tournament. The entire room was completely under my mental influence, responding to my every command, like Professor X.

suggestion: Hoffmann vs Von Petroff - Warsaw, 1844. A lovely Italian Game with a queen sacrifice to keep with the king hunt! Petrov's Immortal!
Can you do an Evans Gambit game? You talk about it all the time, but i haven't seen you cover it (at least, not recently).
Excellent game
i found a faster checkmate
well because the shown one is in five...
but four is possible with capturing the rook first, the king has to move to the same square as on f1 he still gets checkmated, then knight to f2 check, king e1, knight d3 check, king d1 leads to quen e1 checkmate and king f1 leads to quen f2 checkmate

WHOAA
CROACIA 3x0 ARGENTINA
Greetings from Brazil, Antonio! How’s Croatia today? Much excitement?
4:45 why not queen e2 to recapture the knight and also develop the queen? 🤔
I found the Nxf8 mate in 4 variation, but I love the beautiful smothered mate winning with just a knight vs a knight, two bishops and two rooks!
In last position if you take the rook with knight you have one move shorter mate but not the smothered mate
You really make chess an enjoyable game to watch
What a brilliant finish to the game...............
Hai Agadmator, in the end Nxh8+ it's actually mate in 4, quicker than the Ne5+ line, but yeah, not as beautiful as that
There is another interesting check mate in 4 moves without losing the queen in that position by capturing the Rook.
Your dog is always funny! 🤣🤣
These is smother mate in 5, also there is mate in four moves. Knight H8, discoveret check by the queen, King to d8, knigt f7 check , king e 8,knight d4 double check from the knight and the queen, king d8, and queen on e8 is check mate....
Instead of Ne5, can you do something like, Nxh8+, Kd8, Nf7+, Ke8, Nd6+, Kd8, Qe8# ??? Am i missing something?
Karpov and Ljubeyevich are standing.Miles and Timman are playing.
Check by a single night, now that's an immortal
very nice position on the wedding day.... with a CAT!
- " Hello everyone ! " (Agadmator)
- " HELLO AGADMATOR !!! " (everyone) 👍
Begining the mate sequence with Nxh8 makes it one move shorter (since the rook is gone and cant take the queen) ... but somehow less elegant
Croatia won 3-0 Agad! How are you feeling about that?
EDIT: My line is the same length. Couldn't that 4 move mate have been done by taking the Rook? NxH8, KD7, NF7, KE8, ND6, KD8, QE8 mate, or NxH8, KF8, QF7 mate. Am I missing something?
It always feels bad when you get mated while up 2 rooks, 2 bishops, and a pawn. Poor Mr. Hoody Guy.
Croacia 3 x 0 Argentina.
Rooting for Antonio and Mato, two of the best chess youtubers.
What if you "follow" the steps of your national team in the World Cup by showing games between masters from Croatia against Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland?
checkmate can be too knight captures on h8-king to d8, knight to f7 check-king to e8, knight to d6- king to d8 or f8 and then queen to e8 or f7 checkmate. is this true? react if it is not good
i only know the worldchampion karpov
On move 18, Nxh8 is better mate sequence. The rook can't capture the Queen
Rhyme-R İnsomnia Paradox same number of moves to mate
No, it's one move earlier, so this suggested countinuation is actually a little bit better.
Petr Walek you are right
i got confused because agad said mate in 4 but then did a mate in 5
Yes
I had Nxh8 too, but checkmating with your last piece, and a knight at that - pretty awesome. Had to be done.
Hey.. Congrats Antonio.. Great game by Croatia..
I keep waiting for one of the photo challenges to be "hoodie guy".
