9:10 there are two mate in fours in this position.
One is of course the one you showed, and second is:
    1. Nxh8+ Kd8
    2. Nf7+ Ke8
    3. Nd6+ Kd8
    4. Qe8#
But of course, sacrificing the queen and mating with the Knight, that too a smothered mate, is much cooler.

    • @jonaskoelker
      @jonaskoelker 3 года назад +4

Just for the record: the mate Agadmator showed is a mate in 5: knight goes to e5, f7, d6, f7 and queen goes to e8.

    What about this ( last four moves ) knight ( g6 ) takes rook ( H8 ) Check.
    Knight ( H8 ) to F7. Check.
    knight ( F7 ) to D6 Check.
Queen ( H5 ) to E8 or F7 depending on what the king does. Checkmate

    Agadmator, what a crazy match!
I really enjoy reading Russian classics like Dostoevsky just because they are extremely dramatic and are not too far off from reality.
My favorite chess books are Persona non grata, a book on Kortchnoi's match with Karpov. Very interesting book which focuses on the politics of chess during his match, and some other drama. Also has some minor chess analysis.
The Luzhin Defense by Vladimir Nabokov is about a chess player who goes nuts.

  • @kennyfa2874

The mate may be the nicest, but firstly it's mate in 5 and not mate in 4. Secondly, there is a faster mate with 18. Nxh8+ Kd8 (Kf8 runs into Qf7#) 19. Nf7+ Ke8 20. Nd6+ Kd8 and black gets to choose which mate he prefers: 21. Kf8 Qf7# OR 21. Kd8 Qe8#

There is another interesting check mate in 4 moves without losing the queen in that position by capturing the Rook.

Begining the mate sequence with Nxh8 makes it one move shorter (since the rook is gone and cant take the queen) ... but somehow less elegant

Croatia won 3-0 Agad! How are you feeling about that?

EDIT: My line is the same length. Couldn't that 4 move mate have been done by taking the Rook? NxH8, KD7, NF7, KE8, ND6, KD8, QE8 mate, or NxH8, KF8, QF7 mate. Am I missing something?

It always feels bad when you get mated while up 2 rooks, 2 bishops, and a pawn. Poor Mr. Hoody Guy.

What if you "follow" the steps of your national team in the World Cup by showing games between masters from Croatia against Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland?

checkmate can be too knight captures on h8-king to d8, knight to f7 check-king to e8, knight to d6- king to d8 or f8 and then queen to e8 or f7 checkmate. is this true? react if it is not good

On move 18, Nxh8 is better mate sequence. The rook can't capture the Queen

No, it's one move earlier, so this suggested countinuation is actually a little bit better.

I had Nxh8 too, but checkmating with your last piece, and a knight at that - pretty awesome. Had to be done.
