    The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
    The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
    Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
    A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
    The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

      Technically Alekhine's gun places the queen behind both rooks. It is different. And stronger

    • @historicalgames9107
      @historicalgames9107 3 года назад +3

      @@santiagorodriguez2940 The idea is the same. The queen behind the rooks is more ideal but you don't always have that. The queen between rooks is just as good and worked perfectly. This game proves Capa is far more powerful than Alekhine. Also, he is the laziest chess player of all times. If he studied like Bobby Fischer he would probably be #1 in history.

      Also, skiperinos are hilarious AND agadmator actually plays Hearthstone, so the fact a picture of Mamedyarov that looked uncannily like Kripp started all this is doubly hilarious.

    Capablanca like now Leela is learning . There will be one day when he will remain undefated for 8 years " belived or not" and this of course will be his downfall .He thought he didn't need any special preparation to defeat Alekhine in the Championship match. He was wrong. Even after the lost to AA he was considered the best chess player in the world for a few more years. I assume that a tropical bird like Capa would have had a lots of problem with the cold weather in Europe and caught the flu often.

Many years ago I played against this guy (who is a math teacher, much stronger than me at chess) and when I planted a knight there (this was a blitz game, 5 minutes per side) he did not think twice: sacrificed the exchange.

    Dd i miss something at 9:15? I didn't find that elusive move Agad shows. Its a rather long sequence to mate, but what about simply playing ..Qg4 threatening mate on g2? White can't capture the knight with the bishop Bxf4 because this opens the e-file allowing Re1#, and the only other defense i found is g3 which also doesn't work due to Qh3+ followed by Qg2#.
    after some more searching i noticed white can play Qb7 protecting the g2 square, so my idea doens't work. Obviously Agad, Capa and Alekhine all know a wee bit more about chess than i do.

    At 9:39 - there is a better move. Q - g4 forces P-g3, then Q-h3 ch only move is K-g1, then Q-g2 is mate

      Even I found this line. It's the best one - forces mate irrespective of what White does. Good thing I checked all the comments. Otherwise I'd have repeated what you wrote, Dave !!!!

      Not Pg3...blunder that loses. The winning move is Pf3...! R protects everything and P attacks Q.

    Capablanca had his way with the arrogant theorists. He basically said put your money where your mouth is and wrecked Nimzovich and quieted the cronies, but eventually they prevailed. Thats why he was called, still is, "the natural"

    Turns out Fischer and Tal and Capablanca were the game and they d probably all agree that it was ruined by the theorists who felt they were elevating the game, but they killed it.

    You should check out this app called ReallyBadChess. They set up the chess board with any mismatch of pieces. For example one game I had 7 knights and my opponent had 7 bishops and it leads to really interesting games.
