Honestly, one of the best explanations of why each pitch the ump calls wrong is so important one way or the other.
The box on the screen was wrong as it showed the top of the zone at Bryce's BELT LINE. Here is MLB's official definition of the strike zone: "The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap." According to the official MLB strike zone definition that was a strike. Never trust the boxes that are used on the screen, because they are almost always NOT accurate.
@@Joe_Okey Exactly, look at :29, the box is at his belt line. Even at :30, the bottom of the box is at his shin, the top of the box should be at about the umps chin guard. The top of the box should be between Harper's shoulders (plural). Harper is a baby.
@@RH-cv1rgfor reals Harper is the soft one here. Pretty obvious which players have roid rage
@@Joe_Okeyvery clearly a ball, not even close
@steven_shec1702 Again, the box on the screen is WRONG. The strike zone is from mid-point between the shoulders and the belt to the bend of the knees. By the OFFICIAL strike zone, that was a strike.
According to 94.1 WIP radio, Harper threw his bat and helmet perfectly to the top of the Phillies dugout stairs. Wish that was captured on camera for the breakdown.
Yeah, but what was the Velo on the bat?
He’s put in a lot of work on his helmet throwing. Earlier in his career he was terrible!

That amount of stats in baseball is mind-boggling.
Actually, only about 12% of people find it mind-boggling.
Unless, it's November in which case it rises to 14%, or in Spring training when it rises to 15%.
About 23% of people find the amount of stats to be mind-numbing,
vs 38% of the people that consider it patently-absurd.

Yup, 9 times out of 10 he is right,
@@AmericasChoice Shit, with numbers like that maybe he should be the umpire!
@@Germanater32 Why would he?! My point is, that some players have a near unerring eye for balls and strikes. In the old days players and Umps would settle into a rhythm in a game, and would have a "general" agreement on the strike zone.
Typically multiple equipment throws will get you ejected. Doesn’t change the fact it was a bad call but you can’t really be that confused about why you got ejected there.
The 1st throw is usually just a warning, but the 2nd throw is an automatic ejection.
@@JobiWan144 The umpire can fine the player for the first throw (when you see the ump point to the ground, that's the fine, but not an ejection at that point)
@@transitfan954 Yes, the warning is, "Don't do it again, or I'll effect you."
Yeah, call was fucked but no one should be surprised when a guy gets tossed after a double equipment toss plus arguing balls and strikes from the batters box.
Actually, no it wasn't. MLB's official definition of the strike zone: "The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap." According to the official MLB strike zone definition that was a strike. Never trust the boxes that are used on the screen, because they are almost always NOT accurate. This box had the top of the zone at Bryce's BELT LINE, which is not where it should be.
The fact that we have ALL this type of information will make baseball so much more fun. Because it will put an emphasis being better as a pitcher
And an umpire. It shows how important it is for them to get their calls right. Yes, the 2 and 1 call being wrong was the turning point, but getting any call wrong can turn a call into a 2 and 2 that shouldn't have been.
When will the ums get better. 😂
@@LucianDevine I think the abs will come to MLB where batter and catchers can challenge balls and strikes. I think Foolish baseball has a vid that shows younger umps are much better than the older ones.

The amount of stats that are kept in MLB have to be the most of any sport in the history of sports.
I have heard that the title of most analyzed/most statistics kept sport goes to Aussie Rules football. You probably have to exclude all motorsports as well, because F1 teams have some ridiculous number of data points at the end of each race, something over a million if memory serves.
@@R.J._Lewis we need a breakdown of this lol. I suppose when you think about every moving part on an F1 car and think they are all tracked somehow it gets crazy too
How many days points does Statcast get? Down to spin rate on every pitch
@@jbones2121 I mean, it could get ridiculous with just timing in F1. There's 3 sectors in a lap and the shortest race of the season is Spa, at 44 laps. That's already 132 data points, but then teams also use minisectors, which breaks down each sector into smaller sections for more precise timing, basically to see where they gain and lose time vs other teams. So there could be as many as 10-20x minisectors in a single sector which now puts the "shortest" race (ie on laps) at somewhere between 1320-2640 data points just in terms of lap/sector times. You can then expand that out to the entire weekend, across the whole field of cars, across the whole season and also include any testing done by teams. With some quick guesstimates that could be something like 2-3 MILLION data points just in terms of timing...
@@R.J._LewisMillions of data points over time yes, but how many statistics are being tracked in total? For example, an F1 car may have thousands of data points for the right back wheel rotation, but it’s all one stat, just at different times. Similarly, ERA is one stat with thousands of player entries.
I disagree with the k zone size or placement or both. Pre pitch the top of it was at his belt.
The superimposed box is generally misleading. But the pitch did look high.
Jomboy says of that high strike, "Data say's it's out of the zone." That is correct.
But close call sports did an analysis of this play and pointed out the problem with the computer strike zone. The tv system says the expected call is a ball. But both savant illustrator, savant 3d, and if you actually look at the tv gameday graphic, it's a strike. And this is something that close call sports has been harping on all season. The TV computer ball/strike system consistently misses high strikes in the vertical. While the left and right are very accurate, the bottom is a generally accurate, the top of the strike zone often struggles with being accurate.
It's caused a lot of conflicts this season between umps, players, and managers. because they see the replay and they see the ball graphic on the screen, but if you look at the actual pitch, it's a strike. But they don't do that, just just look at the graphic.
amen
Thank you for this. I commented after the vid went up that I disagreed with the placement of the box. As he's standing before and after the pitch the top of the unofficial zone is at his belt or below. It's way too low. But the pitch was a strike for 2 reasons....which people can't comprehend....because they're always focused on that box. The first reason is it's in the real actual strike zone. The second reason it's a strike....because the ump called it a strike.
If you go by the box, the pitch is high. If you go by "letters to knees", the pitch is a strike.
So, is the box not an accurate representative of the strike zone, or has the definition of the strike zone changed?
This is how the umps control the game. We see it all the time. They can literally turn a good hitter into Mendoza Mush with a single call.
The way it turned from Harp to the 11 year old wiffle ball game made me laugh so hard. 3:43
On the bright side, Bryce's elbow is looking strong on that bat toss...

Did you adjust that box for the strike zone? That pitch is way below the letters, or his chest, that’s a strike.
I always watch ur videos, although I never watched a full baseball game in my life. I barely know the rules 😂😂
Going by the strike zone graphic the ball looks high. But I have never seen the strike zone vertical adjusted to reflect individual players. As Harper rises to swing at the ball now appears in the strike zone.
“The official strike zone is the area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap. In order to get a strike call, part of the ball must cross over part of home plate while in the aforementioned area.” Sure looks like it’s a strike and that fake zone is sitting way too low for Harpers size. It’s practically touching his belt.
Yeah I immediately double checked the definition of strike zone because I was thinking the same thing and came to the same conclusion as well.
Yea closedcallsports also looked at the different angles and it's totally a strike
Sure when he's in the box waiting for the windup, but when he's actually "prepared to swing at a pitched ball" (pause around 0:30 to 0:31), the zone graphic is accurate. It's a ball.
Exactly what I was thinking. The zone is off, that was 100% a strike.
Problem with the “TV zone is its only a 2D representation and is it at the front , middle or back of the plate ?
And like you said the “strike zone” changes with each batter .
his warning was the pointing at equipment which is fined, but once he complains was the ejection. It is in the umpire guidelines so blame MLB front office
Umpires are trash
If I remember correctly, is the strike zone typically based of “below the letters on the jersey and above the knees” I know that’s probably very wrong but there’s gotta be some adjustment to the strike zone based off the height of the batter
The official upper limit is midpoint between the hollow of the knee and the hollow of the armpit or some shit like that. It's ROUGHLY letter-height, but it'll vary between umpires.
@@bubbleheadftthe midpoint between knee and shoulder is lower than the letters. It’s a bit above the belt, like belly button area, just measure it on your own body. Letters are on your titties, that’s not half.
@@bolionce at full standing height, yes. But the ump is supposed to judge based on when the batter has crouched to swing.

dude SUCH a great breakdown of this at-bat. i can't STAND how people think these blown calls only matter at specific times. i will definitely be watching more videos like this!
Bro, thank you so much for the confirmation on this statistic, breaking down a 2-2... I always thought I was a sure-out on that count and my buds would say that 0-2 and 1-2 were worse... I argued that it's more likely to predict the pitcher throwing outside the zone on 0-2/1-2, and on a 2-2, I mean he could literally do whatever he wanted, and I would just have to throw hands at the ball if anything. Love ya, Jomboy. You truly are a gem to this side of the game.
I subscribed on your lip reading alone. It's not just absolutely hilarious, but once you say it it's impossible to read anything other than what you said. All around great content, thanks a ton for your work !

Aka cameras
He's so sassy when he's telling someone off
Or sissy. With his Flashdance headband.
Couple things, the Statbox is not accurate, it is approximate. One of the issues is due to the fact the camera sits higher than ground level, so the angle is distorted.
The MLB strike zone is officially "area over home plate from the midpoint between a batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants -- when the batter is in his stance and prepared to swing at a pitched ball -- and a point just below the kneecap." Again, angles are distorted, but watch Harper as the Pitcher starts to deliver (roughly 0:29)... he lowers his shoulders.. so the top of the strike zone is higher and the statbox is belt high.
You will also notice, the size of the statbox doesn't adjust player by player, because it is an "approx". It does not account their height versus their torso height... and, yes, you can have two guys the exact same height and different measurements of legs, neck and torso... that is why the rules give a more obscure point of half-way between the shoulders and belt (for top of strike zone).
The "For What!?" Has Shorsey vibes.
Harper throwing a temper tantrum and calling someone else soft is funny as hell.
Literally. Typical Philly behavior
I remember when he hit himself in the head with his bat in a dugout as a Washington National.

Those boxes on TV are not perfect representations of the strike zone, true.
@@raug4413 Absolutely not perfect. If they were. You would see it change for every batter.

The top of the “strike zone” is at harpers belt, yet when swinging it looks lower. I honestly think it was a good call. He stands upright before the pitch, blue has a bigger zone on him, when he swings it turns into albino zone from Benchwarmers. Not an easy call
Thats just not how the zone works bro 😂😂😂. The zone size is entirely based on the players listed height. They can squat as much as they like, or stand up completely straight and its the exact same size. It does not shift with how much the player lowers themself when getting ready to swing.
@@Rytoast99 I know I’m just saying it’s dotted. It’s a hard pitch to take with two strikes, and it’s all about blue. If he sees you standing upright and you go to swing and blue already has a top line, and you’re lower when you swing, that zone might be higher than the batter thinks. Nuances of the game make the game great.
When Jomboy busts out the nerd stats you know its going to be a good video
I saw a wiffle ball game and I went from laughing at how ridiculous it looked to being very invested in it. It was very entertaining.
I used to be such a purist for baseball. I don’t like the pitch clock, or the intentional walk. I have been against robot umpires until late, it really seems like they just don’t care anymore, the mlb does nothing when it comes to discipline on these umpires but are easily able to suspend the players. I just don’t get it.
If you think it’s bad now look at the strike zones in the 90s. Strike zone was consistently an inch wider on all sides
@@AliceYobby I do agree with that. But with today’s technology, why aren’t they using the data to do better? I know it’s a split second call and there can be human error. But I at least want consistency in a good way.
Glavine thrived on strikes called 6 inches outside. He would not be in the majors today.@@AliceYobby
it's cause of their union. There's nothing the mlb can do. It's like this for all union workers, which is why many of them are bad and lazy
I love Bryce that is insane that after 3-1 he is basically getting on base 7 out of 10 times. Crazy
Throwing equipment is an equipment violation and warning, second thrown equipment is an ejection. Though not sure there was much time between the bat and the helmet to issue the warning.
Really liked the stat break down on the pitch count.👍
I don’t think umps care about the bat, it’s when you start throwing helmets is when they start tossing people. It has always been that way.
The psychological effect of a bad call is deep. Now the guy is second guessing his whole existence. Not trusting his own judgment, swinging at everything cause he doesnt know the zone, afraid the ump will call it a strike
No shit 2-2 is worse for the batter than 3-1. Don’t need 2:40 of a 4:20 breakdown to tell me that. Subtract the .5 mins dedicated to some random sponsor bs that no one cares about, and that leaves us with a grand total of… 1 min of actual “content” that anyone who saw the post on Reddit or twitter could have done in ten seconds.
Breakdowns definitely not what they once were. I miss the old days (cue old man yelling at clouds). I used to look forward to Harper getting ejected because it meant at least 3 mins focusing on his facial expressions. And was legit enjoyable. Don’t know how that makes sense, but it’s what made jomboy special. This, and most of the recent breakdowns, have been anything but. But also like mad congrats on the kid. Would absolute mail it in if I was in your shoes.
"Going Dean Portman on him"
10/10 reference.
Great breakdown (as per usual)… if they can get Robot Ump technology as close to perfection as possible, MLB has got to put it in the game. At the start of every Yankees game, they display the home plate Ump’s strike zone tendencies… which is ridiculous in and of itself. The strike zone should be the strike zone. Period. You would eliminate managers/players getting tossed for arguing balls n strikes !
I agree with what you're saying about electronic pitch calling, but at the same time, this wasn't a really terrible call - a lot of those pitches end up over the fence. It's when they call that same 4" off the plate or low instead of high that make it really bad.
Doesn’t body proportion and batting stance make each hitters strike zone different? The pitch looked to be right in the middle of his shoulders.
@@drumslut Yes, each player is different, but that pitch was only at his shoulders because of his stance. A more upright stance hitter if the same height would have had that pitch between the belt and the letters. Very close pitch.
@@ohger1 Yeah that's what I mean. It's a close call. Could kind of go either way.
Feel like calling umps soft is one of bryce's favorite pastimes
Projection from Bryce...
The problem of saying ANYTHING related to a called pitch, which the ump can massage into "Arguing" Balls and Strikes. Even when the ump made Angel Hernandez look accurate.
A bat slam can be an immediate ejection, if you throw a bat/helmet, etc. and the umpire makes note of it and points, that's an equipment violation and a fine. The second equipment violation is also an ejection on top of the fine. It's surprising he didn't get rung for throwing his helmet. But since he didn't, what he really got tossed for was arguing balls and strikes. Usually an umpire will throw up a stop sign to let them know they need to stop, but my guess is with the equipment violations, he had less tolerance for arguing. Any lingering and arguing balls and strikes is ejection worthy, no warning is needed.
He should have known what was gonna happen when he started throwing his stuff.
Congrats on the gig with Scotts!

jomboy spewing out numbers like an ivy league grad trying to land an unpaid internship at some MLB teams analytics department
The fact he didn't get tossed for chucking his bat and helmet, but for some comment that was maybe about the call, really shows how truly soft that ump is.
I've seen players get tossed for way less thrown gear than that.
Isn't the rule that you cannot argue balls-n-strikes?
I haven't seen anything throw a bat and helmet across field like that. Throwing it down, yeah, but he threw that bat in a straight shot, hard.
I think it was a combo of both
Rocco says WAY worse almost every inning from the dugout. This ump got his pride and feelings hurt so decided to toss a 2X MVP for telling him "no way in hell that was a strike". Give me a break, that guy is soft. I'm guessing he got picked on a lot in school 😂
@@brandoncnash Probably did get picked on. Lol. I really thing the way he threw the stuff as hard as he did across the field had a lot to do with it.
