When I test drove my 996 I was wondering why everyone was sounding the horn at me. A well folded, well placed business card inserted between horn pad and wheel negates a couple hundred pound fix from Porsche. Gorgeous car, I love it....
Wrong. The winner here is the Boxster, not the 911. 1.1 second slower with worm tires and top down. Very disappointed they didn’t swap the tires and did another lap.
This was a cool video, but I MUCH rather hear the cars as opposed to the music. Ditch the music during the laps, and it will be greta. Oh and a note to the editor, its "Carrera" NOT "Camera".
Great video I have a Boxster S and am getting a 2002 C2 6-speed. So this is very informative to me although mine will have about 25 more horsepower than that 911. My Boxster also has three grand suspension upgrade and really good Michelin Tires. The horn honking is freaking hilarious.
Well I now own a 2000 Boxster S and a 2002 996.2 The Boxste r has the suspension upgraded and a tune. I would say the 911 handles better. ...stays more planted. But both are very fast I'm not sure the 911 is a lot faster than the Boxster. Love them both ..it's a tough choice as to which one I want to take out..
Paul just said "which one is faster." I like Paul. I also like your son Roman, I feel like these two are good additions to the show and the quality music and camera angles seem to have stepped up a notch in this one, just thought I'd leave some feedback
+The Fast Lane Car : Just want to say, how much I am enjoying your Porsche Project Car. Like you, I have restored a number of hot cars over the years, but in my case, I have always come out backwards, to use your terminology. Though, I never undertook these things to turn a profit, or to break even. Me, I just fall in love with a certain car, and then I am overtaken by my debilitating illness...Car Restorations! Best of luck guys, even if you don't break even, it is so much fun, one tends to forget the dollar amounts. Justin Wilson Esq. I remember watching the race, and being stunned and saddened by Justin's untimely death. But I found TFLC's tribute very moving, obviously you guys really loved and respected Justin, and cared enormously about his young family's well being also. I witnessed Roman bravely holding back tears, as he struggled to speak both caringly and warmly about his friend. That was the day, I realised Roman who is a tall mountain of a guy, was really just a soft and gentle giant. I had watched Justin driving on one of TFLC's videos sometime ago. At the time, I had no idea who he was, but he appeared a very interesting guy. His knowledge about cars, and the driving quickly of said cars, is what interested me at the time. He was a very cheerful and obliging man, who had the knack of ring that last 2% out of any car he was in control of. He made speedy lap times look easy, for he knew exactly what to do, and how to get the car to do it. I also vaguely recall a session with a BMW M6 Grand Coupe, though I could be very wrong...I'm getting on now. You always find out, what and how people really think and feel about someone, once they have passed on. Obviously Justin was highly regarded, and was extremely well thought of by all those associated with the sport of motor racing. But Justin was also well liked and admired by a great many others, who didn't personally know him, of which that is the case with me. What a terrible tragedy, and the waste of a very kind hearted decent young man. RIP Justin.
The first thing I did after buying my first 911 was join PCA and sign up for Driver Skills class. First thing I learned (first thing everyone learns) was a great big reality check on my imagined driving abilities. It took me three years of diligent effort to become a PCA driving Instructor. That is how I can say for certain neither of these cars was driven anywhere near their max performance. Proof? There's only a couple brief moments like here 4:15 where the tires chirp, indicating hard cornering. Also the horn was a braking g-force meter, honking the whole time under hard braking. It was hardly ever honking. Brakes are the most powerful component on the car, they were hardly being used at all. This isn't meant as criticism so much as to show just how much need there is for some really great videos as you go through Driver Skills, autocross and Driver Ed. Everyone I know who has agrees: if you think Porsche makes a great car, just wait till you learn to drive it!
I believe their driving instructor is Paul Gerrard, a professional racing driver whose skills are likely better than yours. How many professional races have you won?
Thanks so much for these videos guys! Love the Porsche dedicated new series! :) You should have a a 996 vs 997 video soon! I'm sure it's another pretty typical dilemma! :)
thank you for starting this series, i just bought a new cayman gts 6 months ago. So this series is so interesting to me to see and here your adventures with your car. Excellent, keep up the great work and have fun, i would love to see some track driving. Cheers.
Super cool! I have a 99 C2 and we are picking up an immaculate 986S as well. The boxster's are very good on track. The RE71R seems like a great place to start for a sticky street tire.
914 and Boxster are my Porsche models of choice. Mid engine, fun to drive and I could own either without having to shop for a killer deal tho the 914 is getting pricier these days. They are meant to be enjoyed and I think the Boxster and 914 are the absolute best for that, no need to worry about wrecking your super expensive ride. If I could own any Porsche I wanted then an original 356 (pre-A) cabriolet with split window in Porsche silver would be getting polished every weekend in my driveway for everyone to see, pure 50's style :)
Love the tire push.i know myself that there are not a lot of people doing it.i have a 2015 rubicon and the stock tires suck in packed snow.i also have a wk2 overland and would love to see what tires are the best in 20" the stock have a lot of road noise I think more so than the rub icons mud tires!
Idk but I think the horn is a safety feature. When you brake hard in case of an emergency it's actually smart to have the horn go off automatically, so you don't have to do it (like in the case of rear ending someone). You shoulda kept it that way hahahah
+bigb9854 No, it happens on most older 996 and 986 Porsches. The rubber grommets that the airbag / horn contacts sit on gets weak over time. You'll also find a lot of horns don't work because the horn pad eventually got completely stuck and the horn fuse burned out, so when you put a new fuse in you get a loud surprise.
Not sure how these cars stack up in terms of used values in North America, but here in Australia a 986 Boxster costs about half as much as a 996. You'd be lucky to pick up a 996 for less than $38k Australian, about $28kUS. You can get a Boxster S for under $20kAU if you look hard. I think I'd take the Boxster and keep $20k in my pocket. Yes it's a fraction slower, but it has a soft top; just what you need in sunny Australia
Did the hood, rear deck struts... Did the horn grommets too. They took numerous "adjustments" before they performed perfectly. Ruined one in the process and inserted a scrap of a business card in it's place. Fixed. The check engine lite comes on at start but is turned off by touching the I switch. Trade one issue for another. But no more IRRITATING HORN when braking.
You know, I really like the look of that generation 911, and true fact that you can pick these up for so cheap gives me ideas...weird question TFL, do you know the percentage of tint on those windows? I have 35% and it doesn't look as dark as that.
I like the series. The music during the track portions is completely gratuitous, especially when you're dealing with engines that sound as nice as a Porsche's. It would be interesting to get a 3.4 liter Boxster to compare to the 911. Conventional wisdom is that mid-engine is ideal and rear engine is just wrong (thanks to Ralph Nader). But as Paul points out, there are some hidden benefits to the 911's rear engine location and it would be interesting to see an "all other things being equal" comparison, or at least as close as you could get.
I enjoy your videos, particularly this series. I'm not in love with the background music. It seems likes it's a little too loud. I realize it's a filler, but it just bothers me. Otherwise, I enjoy your work. Please take the criticism in the way it was intended - gently. I'm a lover, not a hater!!!
Him: "Apples to apples is not quite what we do" Me: " YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, this video, new tires vs completely worn out junk tires. Other tow videos, Ram 3.42 rear end, chevy 3.50 rear end Ford 4.11 rear end". And then they are shocked and brag about the ford. Smh.. Should just title it, two guys playing around with two different Porsches.
To make a fair comparison, you need both cars to have fresh tires. Be nice to have each car to make two alternating runs. Unless the driver practiced the course in both cars, the second run would have an advantage of practice on the track and the driver just warming up. Not a fair test.
Do a 3.4 intake manifold/TB 987 engine cover, intake, MAF housing and an oem 996 flash. And then we'll see ;) the boxster 3.2 other than bore is, internally at least, identical. Only choked in intake and exhaust
I would agree here. It's irresponsible to show people racing cars without proper safety equipment. What are you teaching your viewers? Plus I've never been to a track that didn't require it.
Two seconds and the Boxster had run out tires while the 911 had new tires. I'd say that it is really a toss up. Too bad you couldn't have put new tires on the Boxster so we could have learned something. As it is, we just got another RUclips video.
Tire Comparison test, not car comparison! You can't have brand new tires vs worn tires!!! I would let it "slide" if they both had used tires. The difference was barely over a second! I think 996 and 986 have same bolt pattern. Would it have been TOO much to swap the wheels and run'em again? Nooooo!
I love caymans and boxters Gt4 is awsome And caymans first gen make over 400 whp with single low bosted turbo insane amount of torqe on 7psi tjat s useble midd engine supercar with pedigre for base (cayman s) plus 10000$ for conversion with warenty done by pros Now is the time to get boxter cayman or 996 But I prefer cayman it is so easy to drive fast unlike 944 turbo (great car(( i crasjhed one back in 2007 had it whole summer and with first rain i spined out in third downshifting in mild left sweap it was greasy and i hit dull boost sudenlY and turn over on roof after hitting sidewalk like edge of road with rear wheal I was young and alone so thank Jesus no one was setriously hurted exct por 1988 wjhite 944 turbo After that i sticked with corrado vr5 and saab 9000 turmo borh fed now i drive only opel manta mk two and love it It neds paint and some bodywork maybe i put v6 3,0 from omega
You guys are doing those drag races like a couple of blondie's.. first of all the boxster should have the top up.. windows up.. and actually launch / start the race on the same time.. it seems like those 3 races are a joke to me..
First of all. If you drag race a car.. close the roof... close the windows.. and put somebody to show both drivers when you can go for it. The drag races thing.. we're a joke.
I love my '03 Boxster s, not the fastest car but it is a lot of fun! The flat 6 intake sound with the top down is intoxicating!
Gotta agree. All the car I need. 2000 here. 50K miles.
986 porsche is one of the most beautiful cars on earth
CTeves97 100% agree
Yeah
Ita gonna be my first car and my dream car😍😍
i have it and love it.
@@mariobabic7378 You get one yet ?
please ditch the music! Yalls videos are awesome but would rather here exhaust than music during the lap
the first lap I though what the frick !!! wheres the engine sound
Probably had no engine sound, it was a Boxster after all lol.
I agree y'all
was about to type the same thing. wanna hear those engines
Yeah, sounds really bad. I turned it off. But it's what all of the kiddies want I guess. Better to be cool than good ....
When I test drove my 996 I was wondering why everyone was sounding the horn at me. A well folded, well placed business card inserted between horn pad and wheel negates a couple hundred pound fix from Porsche. Gorgeous car, I love it....
When will these guys learn to lose the damn music??????
Wouldn't the Boxster be more aerodynamic and faster with the top up?
lol yeah they just didnt drive it well
It's the only Porsche ever tested to be faster with the top down. Look up roadster convertible speed test
Wrong.
The winner here is the Boxster, not the 911.
1.1 second slower with worm tires and top down. Very disappointed they didn’t swap the tires and did another lap.
Wow, please don't play music over the engine.
This was a cool video, but I MUCH rather hear the cars as opposed to the music. Ditch the music during the laps, and it will be greta.
Oh and a note to the editor, its "Carrera" NOT "Camera".
Typo @ 3:17, Camera instead of Carrera
+FatElvis1 I was going to write the same thing... I was WTF? I looked it up Google... Hahah! 1999 Porshe Camera 911 doesn't exist!
not 2 seconds, more like 1.11 seconds. Pretty good for the old boxster!
And the tires where shit on the boxster, the 911 where brand new
Great video I have a Boxster S and am getting a 2002 C2 6-speed. So this is very informative to me although mine will have about 25 more horsepower than that 911. My Boxster also has three grand suspension upgrade and really good Michelin Tires. The horn honking is freaking hilarious.

+Eighty cc Thanks for the kind words. We're really trying to take our channel to the next level.
I think putting the roof up in the convertible might give a better time, but overall, nice video.
Justin Wilson set that record time right? Gosh he seemed like such a nice guy. I miss seeing him in videos like this.
+freezor80 Yes, Justin set the record in his personal 911 Turbo: ruclips.net/video/aDM8ibhaD-A/видео.html

driving with roof down in a race is a no anyone racing driver should know that!
Good vids. This channel deserves more subs and likes!
Thanks so much for these videos guys! Love the Porsche dedicated new series! :) You should have a a 996 vs 997 video soon! I'm sure it's another pretty typical dilemma! :)

Great video. I have a 00 986 :) Super fun!!
One of your best videos, love the new addition to tfl group and cant wait for more!
I really want a early 2000s Boxster S but they rarely come up for sell in the Memphis area.
Super cool! I have a 99 C2 and we are picking up an immaculate 986S as well. The boxster's are very good on track. The RE71R seems like a great place to start for a sticky street tire.
Apart from the bhp difference & crap tyres, would the roof down have any affect on the boxster' performance ?
914 and Boxster are my Porsche models of choice. Mid engine, fun to drive and I could own either without having to shop for a killer deal tho the 914 is getting pricier these days. What wheels and tires are/were you running on the 996? Sizes also if you got them. Thanks in advance
That horn is a common problem when those cars age, $0.10 O-rings from Home Depot can fix that
Drag race at 6:15. You're welcome.
Can u do 2015 Mustang Vs 2015 Challenger Hellcat
I just recently got Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed, it was my favorite childhood racing game. This video was a pleasant surprise. =)
What was that music during the first run?
I know both cars. And the 987 Boxster, this was a really big step, faster and easier to drive than 986 and 996
6:17 It's great to see Roman is getting to grips with a manual transmission.
Idk but I think the horn is a safety feature. When you brake hard in case of an emergency it's actually smart to have the horn go off automatically, so you don't have to do it (like in the case of rear ending someone). You shoulda kept it that way hahahah
+bigb9854 The auto horn feature MUST be disabled first thing. Talk about a pain in the ass!
Where is episode 5?
I need to install some LED daytime running lights on my 2008 328i like Paul did on his Boxster S.

What is the "whole shot" or "hole shot"?
+Donald Megahan starting first
+Donald Megahan "reaction time" from "ready" to "GO!"

I like the comparison. Next time lets here the Porsche Boxster the entire time guys come on!
I live in South Dakota I was wondering what is the shops phone number or website that fixes your Porsche?
I like the series. The music during the track portions is completely gratuitous, especially when you're dealing with engines that sound as nice as a Porsche's. I love how yall drag race everything! is the window in the 911 broke too
When is Episode 5 coming? Much awaited!!!
Replace the horn plate...or add the #31 orings
Great videos. A how to on those Boxster DRL LEDs would be nice.
its like impossible to find an old white boxster, what a shame
2013 Boxster Base model should be enough to beat this 911
Had same horn problem... Add Orings under horn assy
Me too. Embarrassing lol
Excellent video
4:59 1991 Porsche Camera 911? ;)
3:18 "camera 911"
Do a 3.4 intake manifold/TB 987 engine cover, intake, MAF housing and an oem 996 flash. And then we'll see ;) the boxster 3.2 other than bore is, internally at least, identical. Only choked in intake and exhaust
Where is your helmet?
I would agree here. It's irresponsible to show people racing cars without proper safety equipment. What are you teaching your viewers? Plus I've never been to a track that didn't require it.

I'd much rather hear the car than music
Do you guys have an email that I can contact you guys at? Have a few things that I'd like to talk to you about.
+SMB Garage (Spencer Bailey) Just go to our website: www.TFLcar.com and click contact.
+The Fast Lane Car Thanks!
Flat sixes do sound pretty
Next upgrade for the 911 should be a three spoke steering wheel
Great video apart from the music over the sound of the car. Want to hear the car
Niki Lauda should have been at the wheel for a correct comparison, minus a few seconds..
goddamn music while I'm trying to listen to the car lol!
I know you can do music - a child can, but why here? The noise is the exhaust....
The horn may be a safety feature, but hey ya never know
More bite. Better tires?
Just a contributor.
Porsche Camera? Whose doing the editing?
Don't you mean "Who's doing the editing?" Don't throw stones if you live in a glass house...
LOL that horn LOL
Tire Comparison test, not car comparison! You can't have brand new tires vs worn tires!!! I would let it "slide" if they both had used tires. The difference was barely over a second! I think 996 and 986 have same bolt pattern. Would it have been TOO much to swap the wheels and run'em again? Nooooo!
I agree tires should have been equalized for a direct comparison, otherwise it's apples to oranges.
Boxster has a bit of a valve tick
The difference was 1.11 seconds. not 2 seconds
I noticed that
very great
the 911 was definitely hornier.
great great stuff!!!
I love caymans and boxters
Gt4 is awsome
And caymans first gen make over 400 whp with single low bosted turbo insane amount of torqe on 7psi tjat s useble midd engine supercar with pedigre for base (cayman s) plus 10000$ for conversion with warenty done by pros
Now is the time to get boxter cayman or 996
But I prefer cayman it is so easy to drive fast unlike 944 turbo (great car(( i crasjhed one back in 2007 had it whole summer and with first rain i spined out in third downshifting in mild left sweap it was greasy and i hit dull boost sudenlY and turn over on roof after hitting sidewalk like edge of road with rear wheal
I was young and alone so thank Jesus no one was setriously hurted exct por 1988 wjhite 944 turbo
After that i sticked with corrado vr5 and saab 9000 turmo borh fed now i drive only opel manta mk two and love it
It neds paint and some bodywork maybe i put v6 3,0 from omega
The horn thing in the 911 is hiarious haha! But it's a safety feature that warns the one behind you to brake!
You guys are doing those drag races like a couple of blondie's.. first of all the boxster should have the top up.. windows up.. and actually launch / start the race on the same time.. it seems like those 3 races are a joke to me..
cool video but that guy cannot drive.
porsches sure look a lot better than they use to.
I personally love the 1998-2001 Porsches.
+itsdastuff my favorite bmw's are 2001-2002, and 2009-2011
+Milo Jasper same but I wouldn't mind owning an m4
Dominic Paglia i'd want a 2011 bmw m3
that horn problem must be so annoying.
'99 911 looks pretty much like the new 2016 911.
Shift much??
Top down, always...
16k and a LOL horn problem way to go Roman also the tires played a big part
(same year)
Turn that "Music" OFF!! I want to hear the engines.
Same music as Paul Harrell.
Very good video but the Electrical issues are German specific lol BMW benz and Porsche and Volkswagen has them all lol
First of all. If you drag race a car.. close the roof... close the windows.. and put somebody to show both drivers when you can go for it. The drag races thing.. we're a joke.
Whoever says a 911 has more front end grip than a 986 is a baboon. Coming from an 996 and 986 owner.
