- Tonight, the documentary Kate Garraway: Derek's Story marks the end of a four year battle with COVID complications. Kate says her husband Derek felt like 'making this documentary was his way of saying, I'm going to speak up for the people who have supported me.'
She opens up about the cost of care which has lead her to rack up huge debts, and explains the difficulty of adjusting to a new relationship dynamic following her husband Derek's illness.

Cost of care is horrendous
Strange there was no mention on the programme about the fact that they had had to fly Derek back from Mexico by expensive medical private flight where he had suffered a cardiac arrest.

@@nicolastemp8173 I would imagine it would be private, it would have cost an eye watering amount, and would have to be paid for by Derek/Kate themselves as it is highly unlikely due to his condition that he would be able to get any travel insurance.
I believe he was flown back on tax payers' money.
Why is Kate so open about her husband’s illness? Surely she should protect him and keep his dignity and privacy .How would she like to be in the limelight when so very ill !? There are so many carers out there who wouldn’t dream of exposing this terrible time .

And actually since watching it i have decided to offer my caravan as respite for carers and their families... and will donate monthly to a carers charity. I hope you do the same 😊

God when will she give us a rest from all this! We've had enough of Derek's illness, care, death..she's had book deals, tv shows and been given medals for it! What do millions of other carers get😮
this is the attitude she has to fight against. its not her fault other carers get nothing- it's the system, and thats what she's raising awareness for. people need to get over their own personal resentment bitterness and jealousy of her public platform and be grateful for it as she may be able to bring about change that others cannot, so get over yourself, basically.

@@marchill2655 I couldn't agree more with your response there. Personally, I think opinions like the one expressed above highlight just how many truly awful people there are out there in our society. Clearly lacking the intelligence to see the unique position Kate's in to highlight the issues and create change for millions these people project their own insecurities and negative approach to life onto the situation. Kate Garraway is very diplomatic in her comments about the negativity, I don't have to be. I'm aware I sound very critical, or maybe just very direct, but I really am so tired of coming across these types of comments. Comments which go against positive action, which is aiming to provide help for people who desperately need it. I am genuinely surprised at how many people there are who seem determined to twist something "good" into something negative.

Next it'll be "Kate finds love after Dereck" then Kate the Musical. These people have totally lost touch with reality. She'll soon recoup all that money with her income and endless TV and radio shows, unlike the rest of us on our peasant salaries.

I'm surprised she didn't put his final days on a ppv channel. Absolutely disgraceful the way she's milked this sorry situation .She paraded him in front of the world having a camera stuck in his face when he was bed ridden. One thing was for sure she didnt give up any of her jobs to look after him. Whats next "life after Derek ", "Finding love after Derek ".???. Please have some dignity and just leave Derek's memories alone ...Absolutely disgraceful ..

Feel sorry for her, but she should count herself lucky she has the money. A lot of carers and unpaid carers have had to give up work to take care of their relatives. So most definitely don’t have the money for the care. She also must of had some support for her to be able to continue to work. A lot of carers don’t have that luxury.
she doesnt have the money though does she. she owes 700k or thereabouts. she's been accumulating 16k care bills a month for 4 years. she works part time yes well paid but also has mortgage to pay for and 2 kids to provide her. do the maths.

When my husband got sick we could not afford the $400 a month premiums for $250,000 so we had to cancel and drop down to $50,000 for $60 a month.

He couldn’t stay in hospital because he wasn’t considered ill enough. At a certain point the NHS wipes its hands of you and you’re on your own .

It makes you wonder what the 16k actually does go towards in terms of a payment. Carers earn pitiful salaries so what is the Government's excuse for pocketing what is probably around 14k of that monthly cost? What could possibly cost that much when the bulk of the provision is the presence of a low paid carer? Like Kate says, the whole system needs a significant overhaul and quickly. It's actually a scandal where things are now with it.

Why are you lying to Kate, when she reads these comments, she’s going to know what people really think and are saying.
This is a tragedy many of us shared due to COVID. The NHS and Care system was stretched beyond it's limit by COVID. My family member actually caught COVID from a carer and died as a consequence. We would never have made a documentary about our loved one dying and I find this difficult to understand and somewhat abhorrent. Did he have the mental capacity to consent to this? When KG was canvassing for carer support did she consider who would lose that support that she would get? Sorry if it's just me.
Don’t apologise. What you have said is the truth, and I’ve asked myself the same questions as you. This was not Derek’s Story at all, but the story of Kate’s life as a carer. I felt tricked and manipulated into watching something which wasn’t what it claimed to be, something that left those of us likely to need care in the future feeling like burdens, and like people who have no purpose or value or worth any more.
To me it felt this documentary was intrusive and undignified for a man suffering in the way he was.
Its a parcel. .a ceaseless intrusion into a mans death...

She might not accept it but as this has been so high profile I can imagine some rich folk offering to clear all the debt.

It's fortunate she managed to write books, film documentaries etc. It's not a matter of begrudging anyone, it's how often she appears , and now with her debt story.

I know Kate has been amazing for what she has done but most people don’t have the finances to care for there loved ones we were basically alone and told things can only get better for you in time trust me when I lost my mum and my wife I wanted it to be me instead of them and not broadcast to the whole world what a brilliant son and husband I was and I couldn’t do any more for them eventually in time with the support of your family you can move on slowly but they will always be in your heart and most people go through grief at some point so it’s not right telling the whole world about the tragedy you have had I was one of the lucky ones in life I met a lady who in her life had been abused by her partner she is my soulmate for over 20 years together and she still comes to the cemetery with me to put flowers on my late wife’s and my mums grave be strong Kate but life has to go on slowly

Life after derek .....
Why didn’t she just get a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) your relatives can even get paid through it to look after you. Also you don’t have to pay for anything you need it can even be used for holidays. And to pay for care agencies. So not sure why she was paying anything.

@@nicolastemp8173 yes actually for a CHC, your financial situation doesn’t directly impact your eligibility for the package of care itself. CHC is based on your healthcare needs, not your ability to pay. Also I have been told that her finances should not be considered as the care is for her husband and it doesn’t matter that they are married. And if they ask you can tell them it’s none of their business. There’s people richer than her with a chc.
Or why did she not just sell their second home which is worth several million pounds? I feel great sympathy for Derek having to suffer in this way, and for Kate having to watch her husband deteriorate like this. I also have great respect and admiration for her bringing him home.
However, she used this documentary to highlight her financial difficulties and the strain it has placed on her. This is a true situation for the majority of carers in this country.
Kate’s figures don’t add up. Her cost of care at 16k a month totals 192K a year, which she claimed was her whole salary. Yet her earnings from GMB are 544k per year, and she has her well-paying radio job, the profits from her book, and for her documentaries. She has a multi-million pound home, and a second house too. I find it difficult to believe that educated and intelligent people like them would have no health or life insurance on top of that.
Kate lost my sympathy for her when she started to claim debt and hardship, when that is clearly not the case, and when she has assets she can sell to cover any debts she does have. She lost my sympathy when she wanted to place herself in the position of most other carers in this country, who truly don’t have the earnings, assets and support she has, and who are truly suffering in a way she cannot comprehend.

I watched the doc last night having only heard of Derek being her husband. Must admit he didn't come across as a very likeable bloke on the old clips of him. Looked him up on Wiki afterwards and came to the conclusion that he wasn't very pleasant. I'm surprised she married him.
Think it's great that Kate is bringing more awareness on this.
Not only the issues carers face but what our negligent government has cost us. People wanna bad mouth Kate thats their perogative, but lets try and respect her children who lost their dad in terrible circumstances. Before you put your fingers in motion.. try activating some brain cells and ask yourselves if you really need to write rude offensive comments. It serves you nothing.. bullying a woman and family because she had the audacity to bring awareness to her situation.. she opened up about her financial situation, and she's wrong for that too... if you dont like her, then dont watch her, but you most certainly dont attack her when she's at her most vulnerable. Has anyone not listened to the women’s interviews? The woman feels so strongly about how care is so diabolical for people trying to care for loved ones at home . She’s openly admitted she’s up to her neck in debt , she is constantly saying how lucky she was with her job and financial situation and saying she cannot imagine what it’s like for people caring and we’re not in her situation, she’s using her platform to highlight all of these issues , she developed health issues herself from the stress eg , cardiac problems , cmon people I cannot believe the nasty comments on here . People only hear what they want to hear !!!! I firmly believe the nasty comments are coming from people who have never been a carer for a loved one . Thus issue needs to be addressed big time .
