One of my old school kung fu faves of all time.
You really have to admire these guys. True martial artists/stuntmen/physical actors. You watch any film today involving martial arts action. They do 1 to 3 moves at the most and the camera is focused close up, with quick edit shots in between, to hide that its a stuntman/body double rather than the actual actor. These HK guys are doing anywhere from 10 up to 30 movements in a choreographed fight sequence in succession for a single continuous camera shot in a wide landscape view. You can see its them and they can't cheat it. The stamina, cardio, muscle memory as well as acrobatics, is so impressive.

Yeah, I thought the ending really worked because the son was never a good guy to begin with.
Think about it. You’re set up to think he’s a belabored Everyman with conflicting loyalties, but then in the middle of the end fight he just openly says he only came back for the evidence. He never cared about his wife in the first place, he was there to do the job, nothing more.
He took his sweet time while his family suffered. He never sought human or moral guidance, like Lau Kar Leung’s other main characters. He trusted an insect before he would go to a human for help.
A cold and remorseless killer who clings on to whatever he needs, and then lets go when he’s done with it. Weapons, women, family.
The man is a Killer Mantis. He had it coming.

Movies such as the Chang Cheh Venom Clan flicks to anything staring Gordon Liu. But as I got older and my taste expanded into the morbid. I do love this flick especially the Mantis Style. I always thought that David Chiang is such a chump in this movie. There is a huge amount of memorisation in these sequences here = very hard work. That is why you dont see this in holywood movies nowdays. There is no way a fight scene these days would be 9 minutes.

Yeah not unless its a Steven Seagal video where Stevens enemies are always short and light weights..His style makes you amaze because whenever he throws a kick or toss his opponents these poor fellows look like as if they are only coconuts ha ha ha and the best part is you dont see Seagal do a flying kick that will really put the guy he will kick in the wheelchair for a long time...Seagal...Van Dame..and Snipes are the alter ego of these famous chinese martial artist and stuntmen....

6:25 Fucking Savage. Ripped the man's guts out. Good fucking shot composition too. Shows with out showing, the shadow makes it even more dramatic that it would have been had they pulled out fake guts directly on camera. It makes it seem as if you have to look away from it because its that upsetting.
honestly shit like this is why I think people sleep on classic kungfu cinima and have for a long time. It's got the same kind of passion and excitement that good indie films have. They had a good time making this, they thought it would be a good product, and while they might not have always had the budget or skill that the big studios in hollywood have, it's an amazing experience regardless.

David's best work imo. The story is very tragic too. He's supposed to be the protagonist but he's actually the villain (although reluctantly). Liu Chia-Liang really screwed with you in this one...who're supposed to be loyal to? LOL

What's abundantly clear is that there is a chronology to the animal style: snake & mantis are apparently the oldest, and perhaps the least useful. Dragon was somewhere in the middle & clearly influenced Shorin Ryu katate. Crane & tiger were relatively modern, forming their own style: Hung Gar.
