  • In Sailing Across The Bay Of Biscay On A Small Catamaran we cross the Bay of Biscay from Le Croisic to Elantxobe. It was a stunning passage with beautiful sailing and perfect weather.
    Thanks for watching our sailing vlog; we hope you enjoyed it. In the next episode we explore the North coast of Spain, which isn’t a popular cruising ground, but is nonetheless stunning. Subscribe to our channel for more videos!

    Watching these vids brings back fond memories. Our adventure began in the Bristol Channel and we jumped off from Padstow. Our boat was also a cat, a nine m catalac. I'm convinced that these small cats are the ideal vessels for long distant cruising on a budget. Fond memories from twenty years ago.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  4 года назад

      That’s fantastic! We went to see a Catalac before buying Kittiwake, but she was in rough shape and cost too much for us (£14K). The owner didn’t seem honest at all. It didn’t even have an anchor!
      Yes, Kittiwake was a great little vessel for sailing on a budget and she was really forgiving to sail - cruising on her was a great way to learn to sail and maintain a boat.
      Glad you’re enjoying the videos 😊 They get a lot better from ep 11 onwards in terms of the filming and editing.

    Congrats on a great video and your Biscay baptism. I really like that you explain what you are doing/thinking. Very helpful to the rest of us. Having crossed the Bay myself half a dozen times now, the only comment I would make is that by choosing to land at an Eastern point in Spain, you remained in shallow water most of the passage (as you mentioned in the video). That can sometimes be very uncomfortable as that mass of water coming from the West hits the continental shelf. It's (usually?) more comfortable to head further West in Spain, even if just to Gijon, or better yet Viveiro to remain in deep water as you cross the Bay. You may find it a bit challenging finding favorable winds to head due west now out to the point, but here's wishing you well and sincere congrats on a nice crossing and an excellent video.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +2

      +Patrick Laine thanks Patrick! We found what you say about Northern Spain very true - we got stuck with no wind for a while, but it was worth seeing that bit of coast 😊 Luckily the passage was very comfortable though - we chose a great weather window 😊

    Thanks for sharing. I'm always pleased to receive notification of Kittiwake’s progress. There's a fresh quality of honesty that comes across in your presentation that I find appealing and so very different from many other Sailing vlogs that appear to be rather 'self-congratulatory' and expressions of vanity. A passage honoured by the presence of dolphins 'a real privilege', the more the better. Just how they communicate across the vast expanse of the ocean and happen to decide its time to ‘pay you a visit’, is truly incredible. They’re beautiful creatures and always a sheer joy to have their company, however fleeting. It makes my day to see them. Incidentally, I also fully endorse Patrick Laine’s comment on his preferred route across Biscay for similar reasons. I wish you well on the next leg and another ‘thumbs up’ from me. EF

    Well, what an extrodinarily pleasant sailing video, again: no bothering around about Your wheather be it rain or to much/to less/wrongly directed wind, no excessive booze, no severely threatening technical menaces, neither exclamation marks nor all-capitals in Your title, Your noticable uniquely chilled approach towards living aboard (at least when it comes to RUclips-vids ...) again, and to make the transitory landlubbery in my little armchair over here still worse, now You are even drying surplus fish like real pro autharkists.

I have a small vessel and my hubby is scared of the way I sail!!! lolol. We sail on Lake Como, have done Elba a few times and well he just can't take it! I would love to have him on a cat, to prove to him there is a big difference to stability, yet he is not kine on the idea! lolol Sailing the lake is so different and I find it hard to explain to him that being at sea is much better. Well done you two, great job! Been wondering when I'd see another video from you. Tell us more details in another video, about how you are drying your fish. That's such a good idea and an art that seems lost on many 'modern' sailors. Your drying 'net' looked very cool. And I love that little cat, she's as cute as heck, I want one :-)

      AfricanFlightStar it’s actually very simple - cut the fish into thin strips and leave in the drier for a couple of days 😊 The drier is from Amazon, pretty cheap too.
      The reason why not many people dry fish it is because they have refrigeration and it doesn’t taste great when dried 😬 If we had a choice, we would have definitely refrigerated it.

    I gotta to tell you about what I was thinking when you were talking about the ill reputation of the Bay of Biscay or Golfe de Gascogne (in French). I was thinking Ooohhh now he's done it ! those Aussies and Americans sailing Vloggers will make sure they'll never come sailing around the West coast of Europe.I also remembered telling a famous RUclips Aussie couple that they were full of it when they casually announced they were going to the artic circle. I posted a comment in their channel telling them they aren't ready for it and before going up there, they should first sail the West coast of Europe and Ireland to learn and gain experience, and mainly to see if they like it.I guess that was a mistake, because they blocked me out of their channel !!!!Anyhow, I'm sailing from South Coast of France to The Canaries on Nov 2nd, and if our paths cross somewhere along the South coast of Spain I'll buy you a few drinks.Keep it up !

      +Fesh Fesh haha! That was funny.
      We’re in the Algarve at the moment and will hang around Portimão for the rest of the season. What’s your plan for your crossing? Fair winds!

      Sailing Kittiwake No plans to cross. Just delivering a Pogo 12.50 for another crew who will do the crossing.

    I love that you are cruising simply on a good old boat! I'm guessing you do not have to officially check into each country because you are citizens of Britain and members of the EU?

    Did you guys have any sail training before you ventured out?

    • @SailingKittiwake

      Hi Peter, Ryan had the Day Skipper Theory and the ICC, and we both had dinghy sailing level 1, but other than that, we learned on books, videos, articles, podcasts,... and real life experience. Kittiwake was a great boat for learning, as she was very forgiving - hard to mess it up. If we had had the funds, we would have both gotten more qualifications, but our budget was very stretched.

    Forgot something important .Next time you catch a fair size fish, Here is what to do so that you don't make a mess of your cockpit and splash blood all over the place.Once you bring it on deck, put it quickly out of its misery (by poking a knife through the top of its head all the way in to its brain), then open it up but don't empty it on deck. Then tie a line around the tail, drop it back in the water, and drag it behind the boat for 5 minutes or so. When you bring it back on board it'll be completely clean and no bloody mess in the cockpit.

      +Fesh Fesh cheers! Yeah, we thought about doing that. We bled it in a bucket on board in the end, which turned out OK. We also used a tarp when killing it to keep the cockpit cleaner. Maybe next time we’ll try your method 😊

    That is a huge Bay. When does a bay become a Gulf?

    • @tobiasburen8340
      @tobiasburen8340 6 лет назад

      Bill23799 So far I know, it is a gulf. Every book about WW2 seebattles say Gulf of Biscay. And the weather frogs in TV too! 😉

      @Bill23799 6 лет назад

      Thanks, that makes sense. I have heard it referred to many times as the Bay of Bisque haha.
      Makes me feel better knowing it is a Gulf. Otherwise when i visited Galveston, Texas I was swimming in the Bay of Mexico. Hehe.
      I still would like to see them do a video crossing the Bay of Rum.

      Wow......it seems RUclips is jumbling up comments from another YT video in my reply to your comment.
      " also Tokar_ev, not Tokar_ov, stress is correct though )) "
      This was part of a comment i was reading previously on a channel about Makarov pistols.

      I don't fault you at all. I have always heard it referred to as the Bay of Biscay.
      It just seemed to me after you showed the chart in your video that area seemed so
      large that I wondered when a body of water becomes a gulf. haha

      +Simon Pownall hi Simon, thanks so much. She does feel perfectly capable and seaworthy so it’s nice to be using her as she was intended 😊
      Wow thanks so much! Elena patched up our ensign a little too late as you’ll see in the next videos, so it looks kind of square at the moment 🤣 Kittiwake would look definitely more respectable with a shiny new ensign.
      We’ll send you our Paypal link on a Patreon message so it’s more private 😉
