  • In this episode we sail the North Coast of Spain, from Elantxobe to San Vicente De La Barquera. We did lots of day hops and explored all the lovely towns along the way.
    Thanks for watching our sailing vlog; we hope you enjoyed it. In the next episode, we sail under spinnaker for over 24 hours on the North coast of Spain to go pick up our cruising chute. Subscribe to our channel for more videos!

    Great to see that somebody sailed the north of Spain. I never understood why not more people are doing this. I even thought that there were no anchorages or marinas. Now I know better!

    Hi Elena & Ryan, what a brilliant video! Sailing, travelling, fishing, freediving & climbing - what more could we ask for! 🙂 We have a tip for you for killing fish you catch: If you get one of those squeezy yellow plastic bottles that lemon juice comes in, you can fill it with the cheapest, nastiest alcoholic spirit you can find (not your best single malt whiskey...) then, when you catch a fish, you can squirt a jet of alcohol very accurately into its gills & mouth... The fish dies instantly, in a glorious drunken stupor - which has to be a pretty good way to go! We loved this video and we are sure you guys will get a great following on RUclips! Fair winds, Chris & Rossella 👍

      +Sailing Britaly thanks a lot guys! So nice of you to say ☺️ Those are some of our very favourite things 😊
      We do fine with mackerel usually, but that was Elena’s first attempt at killing one. The fish just riggled as soon as she put her hand in the bucket and she got scared 🤣 Ryan’s much more efficient and he’s in charge of killing fish now 😁
      Fair winds to you, Rossella and Emma 😍

      Thank you, we love watching your videos! Baby Emma even watched a bit... her training has started already! If Rossella's life depended on killing a fish, she wouldn't be able to do it. (Ro has a phobia of fish - so it's a good job I'm such a terrible fisherman!) Cheers! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊

      I'm not sure with smaller fish, but I always cut the gills and bleed them out. But maybe that is just the big salmon here in Alaska.

    What a great boat and fun couple you two are. Using climbing gear is the best way to safely climb the mast. Your life is in your hands vs someone else that could slip, fall and lose their grip on the line letting you fall to your death. ALWAYS use 2 lines as a backup in case one line fails. I know of one professional boat worker who fell to his death using one line to climb because that line failed. He left his wife and kids without a husband and father so please always be safe and arrive alive.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +2

      Cheers Mark! Yes, that’s exactly what we do 😊 We’ve replaced all of our standing rigging that way.
      Luckily we’ve been rock climbing for years, so we’re very safety-conscious when it comes to climbing the mast 😊 That’s a very sad story. Poor family!
      Fair winds, captain!

    • @captainmarkgray8856
      @captainmarkgray8856 6 лет назад +2

      You have a great skill and safety lesson to share with all of your fellow boaters ie: your climbing experience and how to safely apply it to mast climbing, what's needed, how to etc (and nothing is more fun than repelling down a mast like a ninja and also being 100% in control of it all). Just always remember to use 2 lines &/0r also being tied to the mast via waist belt like a telephone pole climber. Fair winds and best of everything to you two! Ahhh if I were only younger and healthier again... enjoy your youth and health as you make great memories together :-)

    Hi. I've spent quite a bit of time in San Vicente and we've paddle boarded where you were. You passed Comillas, which is also a great little fishing town. Good to great surfing along that coast, which is what we do. We have a touring caravan we take to camping Oyambre. Going there again next year.
    Nice to see familiar places, as well as new places.

    hi guys I'm also from the UK. It's good to see people who are not rich doing this and throwing caution to the wind! also, you have taken a route which I am very interested in The Bay of Biscay.and northern Spain This seems to be forgotten by most sailors who seem to just race south to the med or the Azores. Its great to see actual footage of this area and a proper take on the weather and the anchorages you stay in. When I get my boat I will follow your footsteps,. Can i ask what nav gear you use to plot your course?

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад +5

      Hi Blister. Thanks very much, it's definitely something which is achievable for a lot of people, and not just a rich person's game. There have been some incredible places around the Biscay coast, especially the islands of Brittany that were in the last video, and the lovely little villages in North Spain. We're a bit sad that we missed out on San Sebastien, which looks amazing but was a little out of the way for us. If you can, definitely call in at Ortigueira (it'll be in our next video) and has a free marina! What sort of boat are you thinking of getting? In terms of nav gear, we do carry paper charts but generally use our "chartplotter". This is a Samsung tablet (think it cost about £90) with the OpenCPN android app on it and CM93 charts. We've found this to be very accurate, even in the relatively untravelled Ortigueira. It wasn't very useful in the Golf of Morbihan though. Some people have Navionics on an ipad and like that setup. The good thing is that you can take it in at night and do the planning for the next day on it. The GPS chips in modern tablets seem to be really accurate. We might do a video about how we navigate some time soon.

    You smack the fish on the back of the head with a tool called a 'priest', it's like a mini truncheon. It's the humane way to dispatch a fish. Do you have a record of previous owners ? My dad had the same boat with the same name, be great to know she's still alive and you're having fun on her. I love northern Spain, Oviedo is great, and Los Picos de Europa. Thank you for the videos :)

    Sweet with the fridge gift. I can't remember if you have a small generator? Are your solar panels enough to run the fridge, or just run it in shifts? You guys are doing an awesome job with the videos, and an inspiration! Thank you.

    • @SailingKittiwake

      +The Butte Life thanks so much! Yeah, we were so happy with it! Our huge solar panels can keep up with everything unless it’s reallly cloudy for days, which rarely happens down here 😊 No, we don’t have a generator, our only energy comes from solar panels.

    • @haywood12
      @haywood12 6 лет назад +1

      Sailing Kittiwake you could charge your batteries with the outboard if you get a regulator and some wires. Dangar marine has a video on it. Good to have in case it gets cloudy for days

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад

      Hey Allan, cheers for the tip. The outboard does charge the batteries 😊 We just don’t like to use the engine 😉 If we were desperate for energy, we’d do it. We haven’t had to do it yet as our panels work well even on rainy days.

    Hi Elena & Ryan, I like your way to make videos, there must not be one a week. I am interested of building in your fridge, maybe you have filmed a little bit? Also in electric consumption before and after. I own a similar boat, a Catalac 9m and it was a great challenge to build in the fridge, because of the small hull. Peter

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад

      +Peter Fehringer thanks so much for your compliments Peter!
      We looked at Catalacs before buying Kittiwake, but they were a bit over our price range. Great boats!
      We didn’t film the fridge installation unfortunately. We bought the smallest Waeco fridge available, which luckily fit in perfectly in an empty space we had in the galley (where the previous owner had his coolbox). What helped was that the compressor comes off from the back, so we mounted it elsewhere, in another cabinet near the waterline. It’s impossible to be precise on consumption, but it draws about 6amps for about 10minutes per hour. We hope it helps! Elena and Ryan

      Hi Ken, It's working out pretty well, we have to be careful if it's really cloudy, especially now that the days are getting shorter and the nights longer, but our panels usually charge the batteries up every day unless we're both working flat out on our laptops all day too. We've also just switched over to LED lighting which is really good now that we're spending a lot of time indoors in the dark in the long evenings.

    The (not so secret) secrets to get viewers & subscribers for sailing videos 1. Thumbnails featuring girls in bikinis. 2. Regular updates. Update at least weekly if you can. Four 5-minute videos once a week will get more views than one 20-minute video once a month. If you don't have enough footage each week, then you aren't using your camera enough. :-) 3. Show, don't tell. Example: "The beach felt quite touristy." (Show us the beach. Show the work you did on the boat.)

      Hi Oxnate, thanks for your tips! We don't feel comfortable with the bikini thumbnail thing, and it would probably attract a lot of trolls (which we really don't want to deal with). As we work for our living, we don't have time to create a video per week and we personally wouldn't watch a channel all of five minute videos. If we have time, we occasionally put out shorter extras. We hope our subscribers can enjoy our channel anyway. All the best, Elena and Ryan

      Sailing Kittiwake I like not seeing you scrub!
      The thumbnail of a dry boat did get my attention too. For bikini girls there's Rai Uno.

      I find your videos interesting. The details of life on board such as harbor master trying to charge to anchor, drying out the boat for maintenance, ferries zipping past creating wakes and your experience with the older man at the parts shop all contribute to paint a picture of daily life. There are plenty of bikini sailing videos out there, your experiences and interesting enough on their own.

      Sailing Kittiwake Quite right, enough click bait on the so called sailing videos. You don't want the videos to dictate you sailing and your life. Great just the way it is and much more useful for anyone visiting the area. IMHO?

    You are catching some important details and talking about them but you are not showing . we have to listen and imagine. video doesn't work this way :) it is clear that it is time and equipment issue. thanks for your work, good luck :)
