    Thanks for the video. They are among he best out there. Well done.
    Can you let me know a little about the sailing qualities and comfort of your Heavenly Twins. I read that they are a little uncomfortable at anchor as they rock a lot and that at any point of sail above a beam reach they slam a lot. Would you agree with this? Would you consider a bilge keel monohull instead?
    Keep the videos coming. There must be more as I thought you were heading for southern Portugal to winter the boat and we are only up to August in your vlog...
    Thanks sharing and posting them.
    take care
    Manuel

      Hi Manuel, Thanks for watching, and for the nice words! As with all boats, there are compromises to be made.
      For our budget and for what we're doing at the moment, Kittiwake is perfect. In terms of rocking around at anchor, she isn't as roll proof as some of the big cats we've been on, but she also doesn't roll around very much. If there's a big fishing boat wake then she can bounce around a bit, but we've only ever lost one dinner off of the stove. Generally we don't worry about our drinks on the table falling off unless there's a big boat passing.
      She can slam if she's going into a rough sea, but we generally wait around until we have nice weather and sail downwind. Downwind she's an absolute dream, with no worries about broaching we find it really relaxing and we've done most of our sailing this year under light down wind sails (except Biscay and the Channel).
      We did look at bilge keels, but for the same price, the HT had a lot more living space. I've heard that bilge keelers also struggle into the wind a bit, and can be slow, so there wouldn't be much for us to gain with sailing characteristics.

    And yet another great video you guys. We both know what you mean trying "park" a small cat in winds/current. We are happy that it is light at the same time we dont exactly have the motor power to put it where we want in poor conditions. Ok we are on to the next.

    Nice video. I love those rias of Northern Spain. Don't let the awkward arrival at the pontoon shake your confidence. We've all been there. Keep at it and you'll develop a methodology that works for you and your boat. You guys are stars.

      We’re OK at town quays and pontoons, but haven’t attempted a slip since (we didn’t need to). Hopefully we can learn how to get it right with practice - our boat isn’t the most manoevrable. Fair winds!

    The stand out differences between your videos and others are the narrative just enough to be informative with both of you being involved equally. The photography is professionally done, I was particularly impressed by the under water dolphins sequences. So many sailing journeys content appear to miss the point that whilst the journey is about your experiences they are also a window that enhances our own.

    Another brilliant video Elena and Ryan! It is so relaxing to watch you on your journey together. You got some brilliant shots in this episode and it was really well edited. We know how it feels to experience something beautiful at sea and not be able to get in on camera but don't worry about that, us viewers can visualise the shooting stars and share your wonder at the gifts like this that nature provides. We expect to have several groundings during our canal trip, and with our mast unstepped we'll have less options to free ourselves than we would otherwise have... Perhaps we should carry some ballast on board which we can remove if we get ourselves stuck! 😂 A free marina, what a bonus! Like anything in life, making mistakes is a perfect learning opportunity and I'm sure you would know what to do approaching that berth next time. Thank you for sharing your journey with us, it's really lovely to come on board! Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & baby Emma 👍

    It's a bit like going aground, if you have never ballsed up coming into a marina then you probably never tried... I know I am being picky but I spotted a while back your rigging bottle screws had no split pins in them and they still look to not have any. Under load in stronger winds they will become loose... Just don't want to see you damage your rig. Fair winds and look forward to your next video. You are visiting some lovely spots and the ability to sit on sNd banks and scrub off is invaluable. • @SailingKittiwake

      Hi Andy, thanks for the message. The split pins are definitely in there and the boat is safely down in Portugal now - the rig didn’t come off on the way down :) true about tue marina, although we learnt a bit about the boat and would probably do it a bit differently next time - no harm done and a good lesson learnt :)

    14 minutes 51 seconds condensed fullpackage perks of smallboat sailing, off the beaten track, seemingly after season's end, in brilliantly edited pictures, topped with some lighthandedly added nice tunes ... meanwhile I begin to suspect You might do this fully aware of how lucky You are ... Have a marvelous 2018, You Kittiwakes!
    I'm looking forward to the Iberian peninsula rounding as well as (if not even more) how You'll master the sometimes well overcrowded shores of the Med "Kittiwake-style".
    You are developing quite some role model in terms of sailing, compared to those bytimes slightly repelling exclamationmark channels - but we had that conversation already.
    Only compareable sailing channel I might feel myself remembered whilst looking at Kittiwake are Dylan's brilliant left turns - and that isn't an insult, more an accolade.
    I'm glad to see Your channel growing, and earning heaps of supportive comments!

      Thanks so much once again Manfred. This whole episode was filmed in August actually, so top of high season 😄 We just went to places where no one goes. That’s our trick hehe!
      We do realise we’re super lucky to live this life. It does come with sacrifices and lots of work in the background, but it’s totally worth it.
      We are just as curious as you to find out what we’ll do in the Med about crowds. We got spoiled with empty anchorages, town quays and harbours this year. Fingers crossed we’ll be OK! 😉 We got gifted some second-hand pilot books, so hopefully we can find smaller, hidden anchorages.

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 6 лет назад

      ¡Holla!
      Never had I thought it would have been in high season ... beaches empty, sparse sailors visible, not much people in the village's vennels, and it wasn't the camera angle, I actually watched twice, I've to admit ...
      Well, makes me even more keen to see You mastering the Med Kittiwake-style with outdated pilot books. But: please take Your time for the way down there.
      Lots to see, lots to show us onlookers, Portuguese are very very fine people, my eyes still water with saudade remembering Fado, and Portugal is one of the coasts I still didn't make it to, sailing, while the notoriously weathered last century Sprinter in between rural communes back in the days doesn't really count, shorewise.
      I actually did make tremendous findings just meters beneath the very trampled track in Italy and Switzerland with roadmaps and Moto Guzzi workshop listings dating from the fifties when motorcycling in the 90s and 00s, so that outdated pilots trick might well work for You, for lots of GPS-sailors don't do nothing but, together with downloading the dernier cri ins and double ins to "never miss" 🙄 .
      Anyway, have a good time, stay happy and afloat.
      Nice to have You on screen. Thanks for sharing.

      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад

      Thanks Manfred. The books are from the early 2000s 😊 We hope the trick works as we get a little stressed when people anchor too close.
      Portugal has been amazing so far. Unfortunately our camera charger broke halfway down the Portuguese coast, so we had to film with an older camera for a month or so (the better camera’s old too, so we took ages to find a compatible charger). Hopefully we have enough Portuguese footage 😊

      @@SailingKittiwake Good attempt! I totally agree with Ben, important concept is to approach pontoon heading into the wind/tide. What about going past, then turning 180º (if you have 2 engines you can do this right?), then heading into the wind approaching pontoon on port side (well past, as the moment you expose keel/hullside to the wind/tide you're drifting as you're turning to port)?

    Thank for the beautiful update. Is the center position of the engine on your Heavenly Twin an issue docking? Or to put it another way would the twin inboard configuration have been of use during the docking maneuver? I know you loose the crawl troughs with that set up and they seem like they might be handy most other times.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  6 лет назад

      Hi Ken, excellent question! The dual engines would undoubtedly make the boat easier to manoeuvre in tight quarters, and would have helped a lot in the docking we did in the video. We watched the guy next to us dock his twin engined power cat a few times and the thing was incredibly manoeuvrable. But for a little cat like the HT, the weight penalty of the two inboards is a big sacrifice.

      @nigellucas560 6 лет назад +1

      Consider using your anchor as a dredge. Set the scope as depth plus 2 m and go full ahead. If there is no SOG select neutral and pull up half a meter. Eventually the boat will go ahead slowly as if she was on rails you can do 360 deg turn if you wished. The bow behaves like it has a tug boat assisting.
      Don’t forget to rig a trip line just in case!
      No need to change any feature of the boat.

    Other than I suppose the fact you didn't want to, is there a reason you didn't use or engine? Sure if you have the time it's nice to sail, but you did complain at one stage about the light winds or winds in the wrong direction so why not motor occasionally.

    • @SailingKittiwake

      Hey Carl, the wind was in the opposite direction, quite strong, most of the time. We didn’t want to use the engine, nope, but even if we wanted to, it would have been hard to motor against the wind with our 9.9 outboard. We had the time and just used it to work more on our freelance gigs.
