I had this issue in a past home for years and never took the time to fix the issue. With the Delta Shower Valve the fix should be quick and easy. This video will demonstrate on a Delta RP46074 Shower Cartridge valve which is the most common valve found in Delta single handle fixtures since 2007.

You deserve a medal. No one else has mentioned a 7/64 Allen wrench. At the very least, It is a beginning when you go to the hardware store. A towel to cover the drain is always a good reminder.
This was a great tutorial.
It’s that complicated to go buy a set of Allen wrenches & figure out what size it is that you need a video lol?
Amazing. Saved me so much stress. Was worried I was going to have to rip the wall up to fix this. Somebody buy this man a beer!
Thanks again for creating and posting this video. I was convinced I was going to have to rip out the whole valve and reverse the plumbing in order to fix this problem. I am so happy I did a RUclips search and found your site. Literally 5 minutes to flip the cartridge and problem is now solved. Great job and much appreciated for this video.
My mom just got a house and this is happening in the master. Thank you for showing me what the plumber messed up.... Happy it is an easy fix we do not need to mess with the tile on!
Dood you are so good at doing this. I do apartment maintenance and I think I’ve learned more from your vids than I ever have from any of my coworkers or supervisors
Just finished doing this 5 minutes ago following your simple directions. Thank you for the video.
Thank you! By being so effective at naming your video, I was able to find what I needed by. Just only watching your video. Turns out I reversed my cartridge like you said in the video. Much appreciation.
Hi, thanks for the video….Been dealing with this issue for four years….just assuming it was something I couldn’t fix…..I think it took me longer to walk outside and turn the water off than it did to fix the cartridge….mine was slightly different model… I just had to turn it 180 degrees nothing to take off….excellent video…definitely will keep an eye out for future DIY fixes
Great video... I appreciate the lack of BS, keep it up man!!!
You deserve a medal. Saves me a big ordeal and even bigger plumbing bill. Thank you.
Happy to help!
This is an excellent video, and a great tutorial for those of us who don’t have any background at all with plumbing. Thank you very much.
brief and to the point. Best video on the subject. One thing I noticed. The triangular protrusions on opposite sides of your cartridge slide easily and all the way into corresponding triangular notches on the sides of the sleeve of the valve body. when I try to do the same the cartridge stops 1/8 " short of sliding into the triangular notches. When I install the threaded ring and tighten it I have to use plumbers pliers. Cannot turn the ring by hand. Also cannot get only hot water. It comes in mix with cold. I did turn the temperature adjuster fully now left now right, with Minimal difference.Reinstalled the old cartridge and got only hot or only cold or mix of the two. But can't keep the old cartridge. It leaks.
EXCELLENT! Best DIY I've seen all day!
👍 Thx Melinda
@@EverydayHomeRepairs You are most welcome! When I see something useful or i like of inspires me, I Tell Them.
THANK YOU for saying "7/64" allen wrench!!! Others don't say it and it's VERY helpful when it's all plugged in with Calcium! Cheers!
Hey Scott! You do a great service for all these DIYers and newbies, with your videos. You’re a natural at ‘teaching.’ I watch every video, coz one never knows what They might pick up on!
Hope you and yours are well, best Geo 👍👍👍👍👍😁✌🏻🇺🇸
Thanks Geo, really appreciate you support 👍. Have a great weekend.
Thank you. You are the only person that mentioned that O ring, so I would know where it goes.
Wow , life saver. Really enjoyed this video and it saved me a big plumbing bill. Can’t wait to see more informative videos. God bless you.

Another great episode! 👍 Thanks for sharing.
Thanks buddy!
This is so well explained
Thank you for your show!!!!!

Thanks so.....so much.
Your instruction is the best. Easy to do very clear to understand.
Thanks!
Thank you, I just bought a house and the basement shower was backwards. took me 5 mins to fix. much appreciated.
Excellent!
An excellent video - great job!
I just remodeled my baths and my master bath was backwards(hot to the right). I was so pissed that I thought they did my plumbing backwards. I was about to tear down the rear wall to access the plumbing. Thanks for posting this video.
Never done this before and succeeded with your help. Thank you! And to those rookies like me, please TURN OFF the main water valve. I got splashed everywhere!
would it hurt anything if i couldn’t turn the water valve off? we literally have no clue where our main water valve is.
@@brooklynshelton I highly suggest you find that main water valve. You may end up not being able to fix anything, or worse, a flooded house.
Lifesaver. Installed tankless water heater and with limiter on all the way hot and water heater on 140 it was barley warm because cold is all the way on. It will be backwards on purpose now thanks
Thank you. My brand new shower was finally finished and the plumber screwed this up. I was so upset thinking that I was going to have to bust through the brand new tiled wall or be stuck with it forever.
Works great, looks great.
Helpful information, thank you for sharing !
You bet!
So helpful! Thank you!
Amazing video, very well detailed etc, thank you.
Such a helpful video! 👏🏽👏🏽
Nice job. Solved my problem.
Like others here...I was allready planning my next Saturday reversing the plumbing. It took 5 minutes now I'm no to the next thing - thanks!!
just fixed 3 reversed shower valves at work yesterday. On the Moen's we use, just take the handle off, pull the center out of the valve out with needle nose rotate 180. Ive stayed at hotels in center city Philly where hot/cold reversed.. yea that was fun getting icecold water when think you turned on warm/hot
Hahaha, that will wake you up 🥶
So this is much more common than I thought. I just thought my mom got a bad plumber. She has a Moen. I want to attempt to do it but… if something arises that I can’t fix then uhm I don’t want to take that chance. I gotta call a plumber. 😞
@@Listen2me400 With the main water shut off, there's not much that can go wrong other then breaking a piece, in which case you would then call a plumber. I would personally try to do it yourself (Specifically with youtube videos by the dozens these days) and fix then call a plumber if you run into an issue.
@@chance2838 Thanks but You don’t know my mama. 😂🤣
Thanks for this because you save me some money
Thanks for this.
You are the greatest. Thank you.
Thank you !!! You just saved my marriage. Great Job!
Do you recommend greasing the o-rings with plumbers / silicone grease?
Oh thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for your helpful video. I fixed my bathtub leak with a shower cartridge valve. It started to leak again when the handle suddenly popped off. I know now that I didn't tighten the screw on the handle tight enough because I didn't use the right Allen
wrench. Do you think that can also cause a leak?
This was a great demonstration! Question: you said we might have backwards plumbing. In my master bath I do because it mirrors same lines going on other side of wall for my guest bath. How would I correct the hot and cold then?
Sorry for a dumb question but would this be the same process for changing which way the handle rotates? Mind currently turns counter clock wise to turn on, and the replacement trim kit has engraving for turning clockwise to turn on. Wondering if I can change my current set up to work the other direction but still go off>cold>hot
Thanks 👍 good job
Thank you
Thanks for the tip. What do you suggest to do if the screw is stuck and you can't unscrew with the allen wrench? I used CLR liquid to remove Limescale and then I sprayed with WD40 but still it's stuck. Any suggestions?
Would this also work on a kitchen sink faucet? The hot and cold are reversed and a Flow motion sensor faucet. Thanks!
Thank you!!
Thank you.
I just had my home repipe but still kept old valve (shower) Porter Single-Handle 3-Spray Shower Faucet in Brushed Nickel for 6-2017, over 3 years. The product came with universal valve.
I should have the plumbing company replace 2 of my bathroom showers with new valves but I thought I kept them since they nice. They also had to break some tiles around the shower valve area and covered it with bigger plate.
They are working fine so far. Any concern I should have for the next few years? Hopefully they last 20+ years plus with no leak issue. How hard is it to fix if there is any leak? Thanks
Notes to self:
1:02 7/64 allen wrench
4:40 how to adjust LIMITER
Thanks
Thank you so much! I can do this and save a boatload of plumber billing.
@everydayhomerepairs if you wanted the handle the swing down 180 degrees instead of up 180 degrees, how can you accomplish that?
Good info ! easy to do with new plumbing, but 12-15 yr old faucet valves, not so easy.
So true!
Well I have a 15 year old one and I fixed it and it was way simpler cause you don’t have to do the extra steps of unscrewing everything just unscrew the screw that hold the hand and you just manually spin the thing inside 180 degrees and just the handle back on
@@dominicmaciel3553 Unless you release the bonnet nut, the cartridge won't spin because it locates with the notches as seen in the video.
Usually have to score ring with hack saw blade and Crack with screwdriver..
@@kameha5145 yep, only had to do that once, but so far i've been able to unscrew the ring. plumbing is unpredictable.
Life saver !
👍
This was great to confirm the change we made should've worked, but it didn't. Our new valve doesn't have an H on it. We tried one way then the other, but still the hot comes on first. This was not the case with old valve. We did have to buy a non-delta valve since no one had a delta. Anyway, should work the same right? Any ideas 💡? Thanks!
I noticed that you are using a Delta fossette. Is this the same arrangements (mechanism) in all makes of fossettes?
Do you know what cartridge to use on a Delta Peerless 8700 series?
Is this the same process for Pfister single handle showers?
Dude - your temperature adjustment video you linked to is for a different kind of Delta shower valve!! I need the technique for adjusting the temp on the kind you shower valve cartridge shown here in this video!!!
used the allen wrench got the screw out but the handle won't come off, any ideas?
The access panel on the other side of mine was screwed in. Shouldn't it be easily accessible using one side with magnets?
muy bien amigo
Hey guys! Is it possible to do this WITHOUT turning off the water? I can’t get in to the main house to turn off the water
In some cases it can be even much simpler than this. If you (or someone before you) has removed the knob to clean it, the inner valve stem may be inadvertently turned 45° or 90°, and this will reverse the direction. If your valve is one that you pull to turn on and then turn to change the temperature, you can set the Hot-Cold position by removing the knob (usuallt pry off the cap gently, and remove one screw) then turn the inner valve 45° or 90° and replace the knob. No turning off the water, draining pipes or disassembling any sealed components.
Not with these cartridges and these handles.
In all the decades I have done this, I have never yet had a bonnet nut com off in my bare hands.
Never. Always had to use a carefully padded wrench.
Ha, makes sense but there was no video magic here this nut actually came off with the man paws. Appreciate the feedback 👍
Perhaps a stupid question but....my water shut off is outside near the curb and not as convenient as shut off inside, and every time I have to shut off the water I invariably get a bunch of small debris that tends to clog my faucets when I turn the first one back on. Can I skip the water shut off part? I'd do it anyway just to be sure, but I'm still asking the question??
Exelente!!
Eres el mejor
thanks for this nice video, without shutting the whole house water, is there a shutoff valve near by the faucet that can turn off the hot and cold water ?
Hey Steve, that would vary house to house but usually you will need to turn off the main water shutoff. 👍
Aren’t there always small shut offs for individual hot/cold supply’s right next to shower manifolds? Or is that only in apartment complexes that they do that? And of course it may be easier for a homeowner to shut off the building water supply than to mess with the shut offs right behind the showers wall (I.e. cutting into drywall), but it’s always a bigger pain to shut building water off and affect other residents than to just shut off the water directly at the shower manifold.
@@JaviAirwraps yes, my concern is the same that if i shutoff the main water , other residents will complain. if there is the nearby one will be super. if remove the chrome circular plate, that shutoff may show up. but not 100% sure.
2 critiques:
1) If you are letting the hot water drain out of the system, turn off the water heater. If it's switched turn it off, otherwise, turn off the breaker or pull/unscrew the fuse. It MAY be unlikely that the level in the heater would get below the heating elements, but if it does, the elements can burn out. Don't forget to turn the water heater back on when you're done - BTDT!
2) Before putting that sleeve back on the shower valve, close any taps you might have left open to drain the system, and turn the water back on and check for leaks at the shower valve. You'll be able to see them without the sleeve on. With the sleeve on, if it leaks, it might not show at the handle end of the sleeve, but trickle down the sleeve back behind the shower wall and you wouldn't know it.
These are really helpful tips!! Thank you
Hot water is not going to drain anywhere if the supply water is shut off!
@@jonlynch it will drain out of any open taps at a level below the shower valve being fixed.
@@pete540Z water will only drain from a hot water tank if it has a supply. With no supply, a vaccum would be created if the tank drained.
@@jonlynch - you're ignoring that air can go into the same pipe from an opening in the opposite direction in a pipe. Take a straw in a glass of water, put your finger over it and lift it out of the glass.
Anyone who has ever worked on one of these cartridges that's been in place for 10 or 20 years knows that the set screw on the handle isn't coming off without a fight. Figuring out how to beat corrosion with existing plumbing is the game, there is no "all you have to do is.....". Plan on having to use some combination of heat, penetrating solvents, vinegar and leverage. After 20 years in place, that little Allen key isn't long enough to provide the leverage needed to budge the set screw. But if you can hose clamp the Allen key to a long screwdriver or pipe, you will lengthen the tool to provide more leverage and hopefully get it out. Good luck!
So true!
"All you have to do " is purchase a new handle and take a Sawzall to the old one 🤣
I just changed an old Delta cartridge for the bath tub/shower combo. Backwards is the only way I can get the thing to shut off. The old one leaked about a gallon/day, so I switched the old one out for a new one, but it doesn't close the valve when put in right- only when put in backwards switching hot for cold. Can't figure out why.

Good video! I have a leaking Delta Shower faucet. My problem is, I can't seem to be able to break the hex nut free holding the handle on. Any tips on how to loosen it? I've sprayed some lubricant in the handle hole....hoping that might help. If you have any tips on how to get the handle off, I'd love to hear them!
Might be stuck be mineral deposits If you can soak it in some vinegar that might help break things up. I would shutoff the main water shutoff so you could turn the handle upside down without the water running and then continue to pour / soak the hex nut in vinegar.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs yes, hard water here, so pretty sure its badly calcified. Thanks for the suggestion.
i had the same issue.. drill start small to bigger and bigger until it comes off.
So the top video will show me how adjust the temp of the water because I have the same setup but its either too hot or too cold nuthing in the middle
We had someone install a delta shower valve. When turning the handle, it doesn’t make its way all the way to the hot side causing a Luke warm water temp. The handle won’t turn any further than medium. Any idea what could be causing this?
Most likely it is the temperature limiter which just needs to be adjusted to allow warmer water. This assuming you are able to get hot water at the sink and there isn't an issue with the water heater. This video will point you in the right direction even though the limiter you see might be slightly different. ruclips.net/video/Iu5knERDq3Y/видео.html
Very Good!... 100
Brand new bonnet nut try with hands after 5 years when valve leaks under handle.
Dude ...!!!! ❤❤❤❤👍👍💯💯
What if it switches and it shuts off in different places all the time and sometimes the hot is on the left and sometimes it's on the right?
Nice video, but in my case I stuck with calcified screw and Allen wrench not helping...
Some times a heat gun can loosen up the bond enough to break it free.
Water shut-off parts in this video twice lol. But still a good guide! You should do a video on "anti-scold" toilet/shower valves, as they're a great safety thing to have
I just notices that as well, appreciate the heads up. Will snip out the extra clip and reupload!
Another reason to stick with Delta on some things,, especially shower valves. Delta has gotten cheaper on some things like all of them, but you can get replacement parts. Not so on Glacier Bay or Pfizer. Moen is ok with warranties. I have a Moen Kitchen nozzle that keeps breaking inside that switches rom spray to regular. But getting them on the phone to look for replacement is impossible. I think this one's discontinued -likemost products these days.
I would have confirmed temp before putting handle back on. Thank you
Hey scott
Right now my water is crossing
So when I turn off the hot from outside and I turn on the faucet I’m still getting water on both sides
So when I turn on the hot on the sink it’s flowing slowly, I leave it running and turn on the shower faucet and as soon as I do so the one on the sink almost stop flowing
I had this exact problem, and am now running into 2 problems
Problem 1
When I pulled the cartridge, only the top part came out and the white part remained inside. Can I just leave the white part in and put the top part in the correct way with hot on the left?
Problem 2
I cannot reinstall the top part of the cartridge. I tried plumbers grease, wiggling, putting my entire weight on the cartridge, and it won't install. Base on video, it shouldn't be this hard; simple strong wiggling should remove/install the cartridge.
Would the white part remaining in the valve be a clue as to why I can't install the top part?
Exact problem I'm having. ever figure it out?
@@rkreidler3 how did you end up fixing this?
@Joseph C. Saponara I ended up getting that white part out. I ran string trimmer line around the back side of it twice and knotted it off. Then grabbed the knot with locking pliers and pulled on it till it came loose. It was a real PITA.
@@rkreidler3 thank you I’ll try to get that part out. Forcing the gray valve back in is not working at all
I've got the set screw loosened to the point that it is just floating in there (can't seem to coax it completely out), but the handle refuses to budge. Any ideas?
Call a plumber
@@tommychambers3335 nah. I figured it out. All fixed. No plumber required.
Another nice video. But, unless I missed it, did someone merely install it incorrectly initially (or you're merely educating us)?
Yeah, it was initially installed incorrectly. I had the same issue at my last place but in that case hot and cold was actually plumbed backwards.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs This happened to my mom. I hope it wasn’t plumped backwards. Maybe that’s why the guy didn’t fix it. Wow!
What if it’s a thermostatic cartridge?
7/64” is sorta odd size. Could it be 3 mm?
I used 1/8". Also on a Delta. Hope that helps.
For anyone that has a limiting adapter on their version (just under the knob), you may not need to take the bonnet ring off. I went to do mine today because the hot and cold were reversed and the bonnet ring is essentially welded on due to old age and hard water corrosion. Tried heat. Tried vinegar. Tried WD40. Tried notching the ring and using a hammer and screwdriver. Nope. I almost admitted defeat and that I'd have to cut the bonnet ring off completely and replace it. As I was putting everything back together, it took me a few attempts to get the limiter adapter on before screwing the handle back on. I discovered there was a range of Off -> Hot -> Cold -> Off -> Cold -> Hot if I turned the handle across its full range. I simply set the limiter to catch on the Off -> Cold -> Hot range instead of where it was set previously of Off -> Hot -> Cold and bingo, it's all fixed.
Lol, when I got my first apartment decades ago, they had the hot/cold reversed in the shower.
We had a shower like that in our last home which I didn't fix for years. Always threw off our guests having hot right when you opened the valve.
Hi there :)
It won’t come off. Do you have a different method?
Hello
👍👍
👍
Trim piece says hot on left side. No way to fix it if water was in fact on right side?
Wouldn't reversing the valve like demonstrated in the video work for you?
