      Heh, jokes aside, I prefer two Shoto Lightsabers, one Silver with gold Highlights and one black with Silver highlights, the blades Teal and Purple respectively. However, not merely for duel-wielding, these two would have a quick-release coupler between them to become a saber-staff as needed, and to be released from that form for creative flow attacks to catch opponents off guard. Also, since both blades would be short, Approximately 24", then using the lower of the two's handle for added reach with certain swings or chops becomes possible, unlike the average Lightsaber blade length, approximately 36" in length.
      Yes, these are specs for Lightsabers I have, high end ones, and frankly they fit me like a glove. I have longer blades for them, but practicing forms, the short blades just work much better, and allow for more Form 2 based control and speed. No curve to the hilts...though now I'm thinking those would be interesting options for dueling.

    Well Christopher Lee, the actor behind Dooku, did fencing almost his entire left and in fencing the handle of your saber is usually slightly curved. I think that makes it also cool that with Christopher Lee, he probably didn’t need much training for the role since he was already badass with a sword in real life.

  • @RockingRobby505

    Hey man I just wanted to add from my own experience with this lightsaber that dooku in the movies vastly under used this saber. When using this hilt you are able to point the saber directly at your opponent and deflect blows with a flick of your wrist. If you focus on a more fencing style of combat when engaging an opponent the amount of force needed to deflect blows is greatly reduced and you can use the leverage to hammer an opponent with greater force. Another trick is if you switch your grip while using two hands you can rotate the base of the hilt with one hand while using the other as the main grip to slip past an opponents defenses or block an area that your opponent thought was vulnerable. If you alternate between one and two hands you can keep your opponent off guard and win easily. The main reasons most swords in real life have a straight handle is due to balance and the fact that most western swords have two edges and a point so to utilize both edges and provide the force to cut you need a straight on grip. Dookus saber has all its weight in the hilt and every side cuts so these restrictions previously stated dont apply to a lightsaber. In my mind this is actually a superior hilt to other lightsabers because it opens up many options that regular lightsabers have but you will have to exert yourself far less with a curved hilt.

    This hilt was made specifically for the actor that played Dooku because the guy was an expert fencer even at his older age, so the hilt was modeled to more closely resemble the, “blades,” used in fencing.

  • @johnnyhall4335
    @johnnyhall4335 7 лет назад +45

    I'm guessing curved hilts are better for those who possess a fighting style more akin to one of a pro fencer.

    • @theapartmates5084
      @theapartmates5084 6 лет назад +14

      As I am a fencer of five years, I can tell you the design was originally based off of Christopher Lee's skill with an epee and the pistol grip style. If you watch the fights of Dooku, you notice an immediate similarity to saber fencing and epee fencing along with some basic rapier. This is especially evident in the animated Clone Wars adaptations.

    • @windhelmguard5295
      @windhelmguard5295 6 лет назад +2

      the curved hilt is a design that existed historically and was not for fencing, it was used for cavalery swords and the main advantage of this design is completely lost on a light saber.
      the reason why those pistol grips where originally put on swords was that performing a thrust with a straight grip puts your wrist at an awkward angle which can cause an injury when you accidentally hit something hard.
      puting the pistol style grip on a sword makes it so your hand is in a neutral position and any force directed down the blade is directed straight into the lower arm, instead of hiting your wrist.
      in addition the curved shape allows for better grip when pulling the sword out of an enemy, which is important because geting your sword stuck in an enemy is undesireable.
      neither of these advantages apply to prequell lightsaber combat because it penetrates effortlessly and can not get stuck, so all in all the only advantage the curved hilt gives is a slight increase in range, which dokuu doesn't even capitalize on seeing how he holds his light saber as close to the blade as possible, where it isn't even curved. (when you pay close attention only the lower half is curved, dokuu holding it on the upper half makes the fact that it is curved entirely meaningless.)

    • @theapartmates5084
      @theapartmates5084 6 лет назад +4

      I agree that the design of a curved hilt exists more dominantly in saber style and most cutting style blades so as to allow for greater control from the pinky as a tension-er, as seen in use as a "flick" with an epee.
      However, according to the Star Wars Wiki, "Form II, also known as Makashi, was the second form of lightsaber combat invented by the Jedi Order. A graceful combat style, it became a specialist form for duels with opponents belonging to the Sith Order. Count Dooku was a practitioner of this form" along with, "Lee, a renowned expert at sword fighting throughout his career, had to learn new fighting styles for the lightsaber sequences."
      These sources refer the style of use and how Makashi could translate into differing styles as Lee (Dooku) was forced to take his training with several forms of bladed combat and integrate them into his performance in the prequels and the animated CW. Finally, Dooku was a practitioner of Makashi but that does not limit him to only utilizing Makashi in a duel.

    I would probably choose to make my lightsabre curved, for better ergonomics, and to facilitate a point style like in epee and foil fencing and the style Darth Sidious fought in. However, I may also choose to make a second lightsabre with a standard hilt so that I have a weapon to help deflect against blaster fire.

    Ah, a question that I asked myself all too often. And the one that has two answers.
    My own lightsaber would, just like Dooku's have a slightly curved hilt (I feel most comfortable with one and a half hand curved grip), a flat, indigo blade , and a unique, special modification: a magnetic generator guard, that when activated, forced the tip of the lightsaber to ever so slightly curve in the direction reverse of the pommel. This kind of lightsaber would be suited for both precise and elegant swings, as well as wide and forceful swings, but would require slightly greater skill to use than orthodox lightsabers due to technically having only one edge.
    The other one is for my original, highly non-cannon character, Senca Ailum, a Dark Grey Jedi (not as dedicated to balance as the Grey Jedi, but not as evil as the Sith. Chaotic neutral). His lightsaber is a crossguard one, but has a quality unique among lightsabers: it has two khyber crystals, standing side by side, one that he took from his fallen jedi friend, and now emits a green blade, and the other one being his own, once blue, but now red, unintentionally Bled after he momentarily fell to the dark side, driven by rage and sorrow he experienced by witnessing his friend's murder. The two blades extend side by side, each taking a half of what would be a normal lightsaber blade, and the guard blades bear the colour of their respective crystal.

    Straight hilt, but with one twist. I'd want a very small energy vent on the pommel. It would be similar to a dual-bladed saber, except the hilt would be normal size and one of the blades would be super tiny. The reason for a pommel vent would be for blocking and setting up a thrust that cannot, itself, be blocked. You need only have the intricate skill to block your opponent with your pommel (rather than your blade) and you will always win.

    I've thought about my lightsaber quite a bit. It'd be a pseudo-saberclub with two different colored crystals, a yellow one, and an unbled (white) one. Its handle would be 18 inches long, and have a Mandalorian iron crossguard, and bands of Mandalorian iron on the grips between where the hands would be placed. The blade would be dual-phase, with the yellow blade set up to produce a longer greatclub blade, and the white crystal producing a standard length blade. The swap between phases would also have a brief delay, to enable maneuvers such as appearing to pass my blade through the blade of the opponent, like some depictions of the legendary sword Gram. It would also have a pommel vent for stabilization when using a third "blended" phase in which both crystals would be active at the same time, the purpose of which would be to counteract some lightsaber resistant materials, or weapons that use energy to contact sabers safely. The blended blade would act like a chainsaw to those kinds of things.

    I know this is an old video and I think it was on your channel where I saw it, that most people miss the intent of the curve. That is, you can see it in the other examples you showed, where the back is curved, but not the emitter. Dooku's curve at the front is more important than the more aesthetic curve of the back. Shame people usually miss that when making their own curved variations.
    I definitely love the idea of the curve and using it appropriately for economy of movement and precision strikes. Makashi, especially with his use of Dun Moch, really creates a more intellectual, and less strength reliant style.

  • @ivanstrydom8417
    @ivanstrydom8417 5 лет назад

    A curved hilt is synonymous with a rapier , used to achieve more precise thrusts from various angles, it promotes elegance, precision and efficiency, where as a normal straight hilt is reminiscent of a medieval long sword hilt, perfect for powerful cuts ,parries as well as thrusts. Although parrying requires more effort and speed compared the the efficient design of the curved rapier hilt.
    I for one love the straight hilt, I'd design a hilt resembling a hybrid between Yoda and Anikans hilts. As well as having a green blade.

Would make it virtually impossible to do spinning tricks accurately.

    • @Glaydor51
      @Glaydor51 7 лет назад +2

      The curved hilt is pretty much only for Makashi users, and that form pretty much has no tricks in it. It's effectively like fencing, using very economical and swift movements, perfect against other blade users but awful against blasters. The curved hilt compliments that fighting style because it allows for the blade to be twisted with very little effort in order to block or parry i.e. if you simply twist your wrist, the whole blade will also turn unlike with a straight hilt.

    IRL, one of my favorite knives is the Spyderco Endura model. I have quite a few color variations. While quite inexpensive when first released many years ago, they have gone up considerably in price. They feature a slight curvature up front and a bit of a more pronounced one towards the rear. Extremely comfortable. If I was making a light-saber, it would feature a curved handle. But likely not too pronounced.
    I'd love to track down Darth Tyranus' light-saber, and heal the crystal to stop it from bleeding. Thus turning it to a light silvery/white one. How cool would that be! Plus, I'd get to enjoy its high-end, luxury construction.

    Serious *ahem* offer to the discussion: The curved shape of the hilt is reminiscent of ACTUAL sabre-hilts, not entirely unlike the ones you see not only in modern olympic fencing, but indeed worn by officers and others throughout the 19th century. I believe Dooku's lightsaber (yes, not going with ze british spelling there) was designed IRL towards that purpose, to allude to the "saber" part of "lightsaber".
    Having trained swedish military sabre and longsword for short while and held a number of antique military sabres (and drawing from common sense), I can tell you the handshake-grip you would have to use on this type of curved hilt heavily favours the thrust and DOES NOT increase "power" in any sort of heavy, over-the-top strikes. It does grant you a more comfortable grip and quickens the wrist motions, however. It allows for a more nimble repertoir of cutting motions, at cost of, well... a stronger grip.
    Now, going completely off the sci-fantasy rails here, I believe "real lightsaber combat" would be a complete thrust-fest; not unlike actual late-1800's sabre fencing, with the duelists standing right leg forward and using the force for lunging out in lightning-quick thrusts while retreating and raising the beam directly after, for defence. Everyone would also favour a longer beam/blade (size does matter, sadly).
    Holding a long beam-emitter - that can pierce almost anything without effort - in two hands like a longsword in a duel would only serve to decrease your reach and expose more of the front of your body. It would be inefficient, counter-intuitive and dangerous. The front of your body is where most of the important things... hang.
    1. Try gripping something sword-like (a wooden stick will do nicely unless you actually own a sword of some sort or you're as well-hung as me) in a hammer-grip and extending your arm fully, having the point (tip) of that object like you would a sword in front of you. It's kind of a wrist-breaker, isn't it? It could actually damage your wrist for real if you thrust hard at something real with the point of that object, so don't go all "YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER!" before you try part 2 below.
    2. Now try doing the same thing using the handshake-grip, and I think you'll find how it more naturally aligns with your arm and body, extends your reach, and makes it a bit more nimble at the point and generally in the hand for extended-arm cutting, too (at the expense of a more secure grip and control if you choose to wield something tip-heavy for this test, like a hammer).
    Returning to the lore of SW and canon, I believe the Force - or perhaps some nefarious über sith god that has yet to reveal itself - has been trolling the Jedi and Sith alike for thousands of years, making them favour the swirls, twirls and flourish:y stuff over simply thrusting with something like a 6 meter (roughly 20 feet) long beam that weighs nothing at the point - adjustable in length ofc for fighting in enclosed spaces and the like. Deflecting blaster bolts would be another matter, obviously.
    To summarize: THRUSTING with something LONG has a MASSIVE advantage over cutting with something SHORT (*hand gesture* "puns were not intended").
    I know the old Jedi Order probably wouldn't like my radical ideas, since it would derive them of a lot of their cool twirling action if someone suddenly started force-thrusting everyone to death. A skilled male force-thruster also has an added advantage in more peaceful... nocturnal... *ahem* activities.
    In addition to one-handed thrusting becoming the new standard, I also suggest we change the name to "lightrapier" or "beamthruster". And to you who read all of this: I commend you. You're probably the actual Chosen One, who would bring thrusting balance to the Force. I would like to train you in the ways of force-thrusting, should you accept to become my apprentice. 19-29 year old blonde women have priority, but if you respond to this comment I will consider you regardless of who you are.
    Thoughts? Am I making sense? Does the force allow jedi/sith/whomever to safely ignore thrusting in the manner I suggest above? Did I just waste 10 minutes of my life writing this shitty essay comparing real life to sci-fantasy?
    Thank you, have a great day and may the point be with you.

    I've always had trouble with defense when play fighting with lightsabers, but it's greatly improved by me using two at once. I like the idea of curved lightsabers, and I like to hold my weapons backwards...so I'd make one lightsaber curved and the other one straight, but slightly shorter than the curved one. Then I'd hold them both backwards. It would give me the element of unpredictability, since it would be really hard to determine how to block my attacks. As you can tell I've put a lot of thought into this

The design would be more for swiping and stabbing than for dueling.

    curved hilt with a blaster built in firing parallel, alongside a basket hilt (like in epees, not sabers) of saber-resistant materials. a longer version of dookus hilt as well, both to accommodate the extra components, and to allow greater control with 2 hands. add to this a slightly decreased curvature, and an interlocking mechanism so that i could pair it with another identical saber seamlessly. and if im thinking extra savage, shoto-saber blades coming from the pommel.
    either that, or abandon convention all together, and make a suit of armor out of uniquely shaped lightsaber projectors, generating plasma in the shape of plate mail. these would include buckler shields, and punching gauntlets, and make the user immune to basically all attack, from blasters to force lightning, so long as they could take the heat.

    Long word count but here we go. My ideal lightsaber would be a saberstaff with a 30 inch hilt made of mandalorian steel that guards the weapon from other saber attacks along with a small shield generator buried deep inside the hilt's power system. The internal mechanisms of the staff would allow the blades to extend and retract in mid combat with excellent force control of the rotating focusing crystals inside. This allows the weapon to act more like a traditional quarterstaff than a fixed saberstaff making the weapon more useful in tight spaces and much harder for the opponent to defend against as the weapon is constantly changing its blade length, much like a quarterstaff. To top this off, the only way to activate the weapon is a small internal switch inside the hilt.

      Mandalorion Iron, just to be sure

    • @ElectronicsForFun
      @ElectronicsForFun 6 лет назад +2

      mandalorian iron doesn't have the properties that l am looking for. the reason l want ultrachrome is because it is totally resistant to a lightsaber because it displaces the energy of the lightsaber evenly across the surface of the metal. the only way a lightsaber can destroy ultrachrome is if the lightsaber is held against it long enough to the point where the energy starts building up and eventually melts the metal. with that in mind as long as l design it will heatsink fins then it can displace more heat without hurting the metal or burning the user and you can use your force ability to aid with this as well. and if you play your cards right then you could solely fight a lightsaber battle with just the hilt of your saber, which would be helpful if the opponent throws a swing at your saber in just the right place and damages the controls for it and then you can't extend your blade. a light pike is a weapon that will get you killed if the hilt is vulnerable to lightsaber strikes because it makes up 75% of the weapon's length, so it would be one hit to the hilt and you're out. that's why ultrachrome is the best metal for a weapon like this.

    I actually prefer a fourteen inch, straight hilt with a silver blade. My lightsaber uses this variation for my sparring practice, and I've affectionately named my blade, "Cloud" due to its silver color. It's a great weapon for a power based fighting style like I prefer, but the hilt had to be made longer than average to accommodate my hands.
    The webbing in my fingers comes down about an inch further than most people's giving me very long fingers, which only made the necessity of a thicker hilt that much more important. It took me months of deliberations to select my sword, and I came out with the one that best suits my build, balance, and fighting style. It is less balanced, though. Because of this, I have a harder time with maintaining my stamina during extended combat due its excessive weight.
    At a burly 6'2, I needed to have a larger blade and hilt to get around my size and strength, and so I had to settle for the limits of my budget. But overall, I am happy with Cloud, and I hold a great deal of trust and affection for my weapon of choice.

    I think my ideal lightsaber would be a duel bladed one with two kyber crystals that could split in two when fighting multiple opponents or deflecting blaster fire, but I would only ignite one blade when fighting a single opponent or acting defensively. I also think that I would adhere to being a grey jedi more than sith or jedi, and as a result of this one of my blades would be crimson, and the other would be blue, symbolising the balance I had with the force.

      Ventress had two curved lightsaber that she would connect to make a double bladed lightsaber... It was pretty effective.

    I always thought it was to make swordplay more specified and classy, like fencing. Adequate for a Count.

    I really love curved hilts because not only are they elegant in design but they also make the user more diverse in saber forms because they have to be held a different way to normal hilts. Also it looks really bad ass in reverse handed or melee form. So yes I would use not only one curved hilt, and they would sort of be in an s shape form where if the grip was traditional the blade would be pointed at a more upward angle. And in melee form would be pointed away from the body for a bit of a safety feature. And last but not least the colors would be one red and one amethyst blade like darth revan which is due to the fact that I don’t want to be identified as sith or Jedi but I will still lean more so to the dark side abilities of the force.
