    In this Pro Tips 4U video, Jaime Nieto, Olympic high jumper shows you aspects of the high jump. If you want to learn the high jump or are looking for tips to get better this is an important video. Learn the secrets of being technically sound, the different take-off methods, plus which one Jaime uses and why. Also you’ll learn how to jump at the bar, what you should do as you fly over, when to tuck your knees and what part of the body you should ultimately land on.
    Jamie Nieto is a high jumper who competed in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. His personal best jump is 2.34 meters (7'8"), achieved at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He was the 2004 USA Olympic Trials Champion with a jump of 2.33 meters (7' 7.5") as well as the 2003 USA Outdoor Champion with a jump of 2.30 meters (7' 6.5").
    Jamie's instructional track and field videos for Pro Tips 4U focus on how to warm-up before jumping, the approach and basics of the high jump.

    I was messing around when I was a kid as a high jumper and the other guys all got their jumping done and I hadn't jumped yet. I usually passed to 6'4 or 6'5" at least. The last kid misses 3 times on 6'4" and he thought he won. I asked them to raise it to 6'5" and jumped once in sweat pants and won and I'll never forget him walking away cussing about me being in sweat pants and jumped once. Lol. Even jumped 6'4" in jeans. I miss those days. Enjoy your youth kids I couldn't leap over mowed grass at age 47 now with 11 knee surgeries in me now

    Outstanding. I'm 64 and thinking about jumping again. It's been about 20 years since I last cleared 5'8" with a dive straddle. I tried the flop in 8th and 9th grade but switched to the straddle when my coach pointed out that the world's best all did the straddle. In my early 40s I worked on the flop, but stuck with the straddle. I wish I could have seen this video. It really breaks it down. I still dream of jumping and not coming down.

  • @thethirdman225
    @thethirdman225 8 лет назад +36

    The take off stride should be an exaggerated running stride. You need to carry as much speed as you can through the jump and convert speed to height. That's my way of agreeing with what he said. The high jump is a lot like learning a golf swing. You practice, practice, practice, practice and yes, practice more until it's totally routine. Every jump is different but you need to make it as routine as you can get it. And yes America: LEARN METRIC!! It's the only system anyone uses in competitions outside the US.

    • @jumpmaster8667
      @jumpmaster8667 7 лет назад +1

      If you're at a big meet it is also what they use in the US. High School tries to stick with feet and inches, but college is all metric, at least my experience with NCAA D1.

    • @ianpg9891
      @ianpg9891 6 лет назад +2

    yo I'm a hurdler, but I think I wanna try high jump because it would help my school to have better high jumpers. I'm 5'7, and I have about a 41 inch vertical (generously) should I try it out my sophomore year or would it be a waste of time?
    my 300 mH Time was about 43 seconds but I think it's gonna be alot better this year (hopefully 40-42)

    Another tip, when you get done with your jump don’t get off the mat by going underneath the mat it’ll be counted as a scratch and if you cleared the height it wouldn’t count so I suggest you always leave off the back or the right or left side of the mat.

      I came out under the bar my whole career. There is no rule that prohibits it unless some dumbass conference or state put it in.

      Yeah I mean if you watch any Olympic video a majority of them just go under the bar because it is so high anyways lol

      Ashlynn Sania so me (ambidextrous but more right footed then left) I start with my right foot to the outside. I jump off of my left foot and swing right. opposite for left footers

    • @amyyeo592
      @amyyeo592 7 лет назад +2

      Ashlynn Sania push off from the leg furthest away from the bar

    • @moodtrbl_
      @moodtrbl_ 6 лет назад

      you have to find which leg is stronger, if your left leg is stronger (like me) then you jump/run on the left side if your right leg is stronger then you jump/run on the right side, at least that’s how my gym teacher taught us

    • @trinity7628
      @trinity7628 5 лет назад

      You can go from either side and then the leg farthest from the bar is the one.

    Dear Jamie,
    My name is Clay Brewer and I am a junior in high school. My freshman year I jumped 1.98 meters and have jumped that multiple times since. I know for a fact I am much stronger than I was two years ago, but can't seem to be able to make heights above 2 meters. After reviewing all of my jumps from my 10th grade year I have figured out this was cause by a complete loss of momentum on my turn in step. Do you have any tips for me to help me regain my fluidity in my approach?
    Eagerly awaiting your response
    Clay Brewer

    I have a meet in 2 days. I am 1.48cm & can jump 1.09. I get one practice tomorrow then it is meet day. Hopefully tomorrow I can jump higher after watching this video. I’m trying to get over 1.20cm but that is 11 more cm I have to jump. The thing that I struggle with is that when I go up to the high jump I panic and my I forget what leg to go on and that slows me down. Any tips?

    To find which side you want to go on, fall face straight and let your left or right leg prevent you from falling. Lean over and naturally one leg will save you and that is the one you want to jump with.
