I can't believe I got into this hobby almost 25 years ago. It seems like yesterday that I was picking up my first box of Eldar Guardians from a local hobby shop. Fast forward to nearly 25 years later and this week we will take a look at what is my absolute dumbest eBay Warhammer purchase to date, not that the models were bad, but man did I overpay! The auction was for a few squads of Eldar models from the late 90s and an Avatar of Khaine! I got into a crazy bidding war and just couldn't contain my emotion, I was pretty young at the time and didn't really think about the price if I'm being honest. In fact, I tried to justify it to my parents, saying these were special, and I got a good deal, which really didn't work, and they were a little upset. Of course looking back at it now and still owning the models just makes for a good story, but I felt bad about this purchase for quite a while, weird kid guilt, anyways... This video was a fun one for me, lots of reminiscing about the good and bad of playing Warhammer when I was young. I eluded to quitting the hobby because of this model, and that's mostly the case. I was legitimately laughed at for this paint job by adult players back in the day, and some very not so nice things were said, so I told them to shove it and I quit buying models. It took me 20 years to come back to the hobby, and I am so glad that I did. I don't ever want to see that happen to anyone, and I will always do my best to encourage and lift up my fellow hobbyist'. I do feel like this hobby has gotten way better about things like that, although I still see room for improvement too. Either way, I hope we can make a positive impact on the hobby and have some fun together painting and playing wargames!
Im with ya all the way. Year 2000 I got my first squad of guardians. Butchered the paint jobs. Then rebought it all 14 years later and 22 years on still have a huge Beil Tan army. Glad you are still enjoying it also
Always so cool to see how many folks have been playing and painting Warhammer for so many years. That nostalgic component is so important, and really only something I relate to with the old video games I used to play. Thanks for sharing your story, Casey! (Also sweet purple mask).
I had an original lead Space Marine dreadnaught that I repainted about 10 times while I was still doing the hobby. I kept changing chapters for my marine army and the dreadnaught was always the one that got repainted first. I wish I still had it and could go back and do it justice (how it looked in my head rather than how it looked after paint job number 10). Cheers for the video, really nice seeing you having the chance to go back and redo it.
Shout out to that tumbling Eldar at 3:30. I don't know if you bought it like this, or 12 year old Casey had the idea, but if it's the later, it's actually a pretty brilliant way of making an action pose that coveys the superhuman grace of the Eldar. He looks like he doing acrobating rolls while firing.
i really wish i could have gotten into this when i was 12, a friend of mine played but laughed at the thought of me ever being able to buy my own because of how poor we were. i just stayed away from the whole hobby till i was in my 30's
It took a lot of saving and scraping together money to get boxes of models and stuff. I think I was a little lucky in that my dad was already into model trains, so the shop was the same, the hobby was similar, the money...still, being young and trying to get into it was tough and not sustainable really. But here we are now right? :)
being 12 in the 1990 everything GW was affordable 40-60 unit plastic box sets for 30$ lead command groups were 5 minis for 10$ the sculpts weren't nearly as breathtaking as they are today but it certainly feels bad that they are out of the price range for young people today
Mate I was in the same boat as a kid, I was the only one who's family couldn't afford mini and that's totally fair enough on my parents part. My friends used to rub it in my face that I didn't have any minis. We entered our late teens and early 20s and 40k wasn't cool to them anymore so I ended with boxes and boxes of their vintage minis. Now we're in our 30s and I've got a few beautifully painted armies made up of their minis that they get envious over whenever they see them bwahahahaha
Nice work, as usual, Casey! I don't have any embarrassing stories to tell about eBay purchases that I can recall offhand, sadly. But that does look like a pretty awesome model to see about scoring--that sculpt is mighty fierce!
First, for those shoulder pad transfers, highly recommend Vallejo decal softener! A video by ThePrefect showed me that multiple coats, pressing it down and letting it dry in between will actually dissolve the transfer material and pretty much just leave the ink. Takes a little while to do multiple coats, but it really makes the transfers look painted with no extra painting! Second, the orange shirt, purple mask and sunglasses with the Dremel, straight up vibing, awesome. Third, awesome job on the model. Looks so satisfying to have done how you want all these years later!
Thank you for this...I've got (way too) many models that I've redone over the years so it's nice to see that I'm not alone. Don't be embarrassed about your past paint jobs, take pride in the fact that you've developed your skills over the years and are able to showcase them now. Personally, I'm about to delve deep into the Eldar rabbithole again so wish me luck!
I wish I'd seen this video when I was 12 and frustrated with how my 90's Eldar army looked. This is a really important lesson for new mini painters in particular. Don't aspire to the box art or someone else's mini you found online, aspire to paint your best mini.
I also started with 3rd edition and a Biel Tan army. My paint job on the avatar still looks good by today standards. But I’ve never finished the paint job on several vehicles and the new eldar releases as well as your video may bring me back on the painting table !
I never even painted my Avatar of Kaine I got at a similar age in a huge eldar battleforce box. It's a cool model still. I remember like yesterday a friend and I slapped some neon paints on a wrathelord posing it stepping on necron scarabs to goof off on the fact that I was never going to paint all my models.
I have a question for you and maybe your peers. I just repainted the cowling on my Warlock Jet Bikes to reflect the colour I use for special units. In this case I changed from Dark Angels green to Midnight Blue. I used a blue grey undercoat and then painted the blue on top and it looks stunning. It is so deep that depending on the light it hints at purple or a deep blue that goes on for ever. I might have highlighted and shaded the job but I don't want to change this effect. And with Eldar you can get away with the nature of the equipment looking pristine because that is who they are. Question: Would you ever paint on a colour and not enhance (?) it because the finish is so good? Or do you believe there is no option but to layer it down?
I am in the same place right now. I just found my Avatar from 20+ years ago and just recently got back into the hobby. This video has motivated me to get this painted up. I’m not up to your level with painting, but I’m thinking about starting a Patreon and post painting along with my book writing.
I remember when I got a dwarven gyrocopter as a kid, and I think I used probably half a bottle of super glue to try and get the three rotors to stick onto the hub for them, still never worked and I gave up painting after then out of frustration. If only I had known about green stuff and pinning back then! My and my best friend have been looking for a complete box of battle for skull pass for quite a few years now but no joy, they're all too expensive!
Just a little camera work tip. Because you have good lighting. Boost your ISO up and increase you’re aperture to around F8.0+ this will make focus shifting less frequent and obvious because of your depth of field will be reduced.
Yeah, I’m usually 100% on manual focus, but I just got a new camera and the auto focus has been pretty good, or so it seemed! I appreciate the tips though for sure! :)
I farmed mine out to a guy I knew who was a good painter for 20 bucks, I knew I couldn't do that model justice. I've still got him today 25 years later.
Hey Casey! I'm working on one of these models myself right now, didn't think I'd see a new video about him! Quick question, have you tried any of the other panel liner colors by Tamiya? The browns are great, but I still haven't figured a good use for the grey. Any thoughts?
I haven't gotten my hands on the other Tamiya colors, been meaning too though! I've heard they are pretty great. Grey would be so good for doing dark colors, or if you want to make something look dusty. I've used grey enamels on the newer Black Coach model from GW, on the dark wood it really stands out and makes it look good. Otherwise it would work well for white armor that you didn't want to have a super strong black line, actually, Eldar Guardians are a perfect example, the newer one I showed in this video was all grey lined.
@@eBayMiniatureRescues Thanks for the tips! I have a Ravenwing Apothecary that needs painting, seems like it might just be the perfect model for the grey.
I bought that model painted from someone at the store as a teenager. I had told him that I liked the paintjob a few times and he needed money, so he asked me if I wanted to buy it from him. I still have it in my showcase behind me. Someday If we meet again I will give him his model back :)
I'm really happy to see mini painters becoming open to products that are applicable to all hobbies involving plastic things covered in paint. Micro Sol and Micro Set for decals, panel liner, weathering pigments and effects. Be nice to see photo etch detailing make it's way into mod kits and sets. Good & cheap way to add intricate detail to small scale. Now I don't feel like a stupid old man or an out of touch weirdo because my solution to everything mini related isn't citadel. Scale model builders can learn how to paint diorama figures and learn about light, shadow and contrast from mini painters; mini painters can find better products and weathering techniques from scale model builders. Gundam people are still learning everything ಠ‿ಠ
I vaguely remember these Eldar models being around when I was into the hobby as a kid, I collected Ultramarines, 20 years later I feel like the new models might finally draw me in.
I see that you have the "hair" head-cannon for the Avatar. Interesting. Mine was always that it was smoke coming out of the funnel in the head, and it just psychically shaped its' self into looking like hair. You might want to think about getting the one from FW, it has very obvious hair. And, at only 100 bucks, its probably gonna be cheaper then the new plastic GW one coming out this year.
Not to harp on you, but I think if you used more internal glow of some sort on the inside recesses… it would have a more dynamic look . But it still looks great!
I have three Avatars, only two are complete though. But have been practicing up and am finally super ready for all these refreshed Eldar, and can’t wait for the new Avatar. And all the Phoenix lords. It’s a great time to have gotten back into the hobby - should have this buttoned down by the time I need to go paint a bunch of fantasy elves and dragons :)
I actually collected the Eldar Avatar models and this was fun to paint. I'm looking forward to the new one and am wondering if it will be as tall as the Forge World one with a spear. The little Rogue Trader one with a spear and a cloak is quite a fun one to paint. I grabbed one of those off Ebay once.
I'd love to get one of the Forgeworld ones someday, it's definitely a cool model. I imagine the new plastic kit will be very similar to the FW one though. The teaser showed the hand and the sword and they were pretty much identical, so hopefully it will be a super slick upgrade to the rest of him!
I just don't have a ton of chemicals around the house. My cabinets lock, but I still have kids that want to get into things. I don't think they would actually get into anything too harsh but better safe than sorry. Acetone for metal is definitely a better way to go, it melts the paint pretty quickly.
Thank you for the video..Have all the minis i bought a LONG LONG time ago..As i get the urge..i strip something and repaint..Have not played in 15years at least..
Ninjon makes an appearance lol Edit: I think the timing is a good thing of the new model is coming. Which means you need to settle your old chilhood dire one last time and give it a final love to it. Once as a kid working with limited tools or resources. Now as Adults giving these models a final touch up with new paint shows how come since then.
Just got centurions for £30. Brand new and sealed, the £30 includes the shipping. Basically saved £7 if i were to buy from a 3rd party seller for 20% off.
Ahhh I love my repainted avatar! Very similar story... I was probably 10 when I got him? I based him with gold spray paint 🤣 He actually looks like an Avatar now... I repainted him ONCE as an adult when I was first figuring out that I could paint OK... he's not perfect but he's just great.
Hey, I wonder if you ever have issues with breaking wires on your dremel wire wheel, because that could cause some major damage to the lens on your camera.
If you're in Northern Nevada the chances are probably pretty high. Admittedly though I haven't been to a shop for a few months, it's probably time to re up on some stuff!
The paint is excellent! i didn't catch the name of the paint you used as a basecoat that would prevent the paint from flacking, could you telle me what it was? and thank you for the video ^^
What kind of Dremmel attachment did you use to clean off the last bits of paint? I've been buying some of the old metal Eldar to paint and join my own old metal Eldar and could use some advice for getting those last stubborn paint patches off.
I feel a lot of the sentiments of this video, 1998 was the first year I got into the hobby when a friends mum got me the space marine command box set. I have no clue what happened to it all but I'll have to hunt down that set and paint it again if only to for the nostalgia because compared to the new Primaris stuff it just doesn't compare. That said that box will always have a special set of memories for me.
For this guy I used Vallejo Metal Color Gold. It's vibrant, but also has quite a bit of green in it, so it really bounces off the reds here. A great color though and some of the best metallic paint on the market!
My mother threw away mine when I went to University. Tbf I'd not collected since I was 13...this was 2004. Got back into the hobby 2 years ago and realised the value of all the models that got thrown away 🙃
I recently did one of these I had for over 18 years what was left in stripper, come into really good, not so fond of yours don't like the colours you used and not a lot of detail, definately better than it was though! Good effort 😉
You really killed me with that Secret Weapon R. I. P. I was gearing up to make another big purchase from them at the end of the year. What happened to SWM/Misterjustin?
I'd say Avatar of Khaine deserves the fresh paintjob if for nothing else, to apologize how he is basically fodder throughout the 40k series to show how strong the plot armor is for various characters.
The kit I bought came with a pretty soft steel one, it's still a little abrasive if you're not careful. Best bet is to look into brass wire ones that are really soft, specifically for cleaning and polishing. I've had them on a list for a while and just haven't picked them up.
I'm partial to it, probably because it seems to fit my Eldar from when I started. But, an option I almost went with was to paint all of that stuff white, a little more like that last example pic, that could have been fun too :)
Your halo is slipping again. Maybe you need to take a step to the left? 14:06 Ah, that's better. Now you get a 4++ Save! The rearview of the Avatar does have a kind of "Oh, no, I shouldn't have eaten a bowlful of Carolina Reaper peppers!" look to its buttocks. 🥵🌶\ The comparison between your painting then and now was illuminating.
You should just buy another one and paint it instead. I really wish I had my armies from the mid 90s. So sad I have none of my OG models. I've still got my Orc and Goblins that I started in 2000 so that's something at least.
Mate... for metals, just use Acetone. Got a wife? Does she do her nails, and need to clean them? Yeah, that stuff. Just an old jar, a lid, drop it in. Done - yeah, as long as it took to read this, its done. It works instanly, and you just scrub with a brush. So easy, but you can also leave it in the jar for literal years!
making these old models' look good is almost an effort in futility. your paint in nice, but the old sculpt fails to live up to modern standards. good to see eldar getting some new stuff!! now for new nids pls, gw? pls?
Eh it works for SOME older models, the old RT plastic space marines, the 2nd edition metal Terminators...mostly stuff the Imperium range (bar the horrendous faces on early Sister of Battle stuff where it seemed like the sculptor had never seen a real live woman and instead just gave them a serious case of man-face...in fact most early female GW sculpts are absolutely fucking dire). However for some models a snazzy modern paint scheme can't do them justice. The one model you almost NEVER see anyone tackle because it's A) fucking expensive and B) honestly a terrible sculpt is the original Nagash model. I'd love to see someone just try to paint that up and make it look good.
haha, that model was my first real try at converting a model. The Matrix had just come out and my Dad took me to see it in theaters. So this guardian is basically Neo in the lobby. If I had known about greenstuff you can believe he would have had a trench coat as well lol
Thanks!! Yeah it was sad to hear that Secret Weapon went under. it's been a tough couple of years for so many small businesses, even when they get pretty regular support. I imagine it won't be gone forever, Justin will probably do something with all that experience, let's hope anyways!
There's a newer version of the avatar I thought. He has the option of holding a sword or a spear or something like that. Maybe I'm mistaken but I swear I remember seeing one like that.

I'd love to get one of the Forgeworld ones someday, it's definitely a cool model. I imagine the new plastic kit will be very similar to the FW one though. The teaser showed the hand and the sword and they were pretty much identical, so hopefully it will be a super slick upgrade to the rest of him!
Do you prefer not to use acetone as it can be caustic? That's worked the best for old metal minis for me.
I just don't have a ton of chemicals around the house. My cabinets lock, but I still have kids that want to get into things. I don't think they would actually get into anything too harsh but better safe than sorry. Acetone for metal is definitely a better way to go, it melts the paint pretty quickly.
I like that the images he click on. He liked. That's great to support other artists.
Thank you for the video..Have all the minis i bought a LONG LONG time ago..As i get the urge..i strip something and repaint..Have not played in 15years at least..
Wasn't '98 the launch year of the Grav Tank?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it haha!
Ninjon makes an appearance lol
Edit:
I think the timing is a good thing of the new model is coming. Which means you need to settle your old chilhood dire one last time and give it a final love to it.
Once as a kid working with limited tools or resources. Now as Adults giving these models a final touch up with new paint shows how come since then.
Dude, your skits are hilarious.
Just got centurions for £30. Brand new and sealed, the £30 includes the shipping. Basically saved £7 if i were to buy from a 3rd party seller for 20% off.
Ahhh I love my repainted avatar! Very similar story... I was probably 10 when I got him?
I based him with gold spray paint 🤣
He actually looks like an Avatar now... I repainted him ONCE as an adult when I was first figuring out that I could paint OK... he's not perfect but he's just great.
Hey, I wonder if you ever have issues with breaking wires on your dremel wire wheel, because that could cause some major damage to the lens on your camera.
If you don't mind me asking what kind of wheel do you use on your dremel to buff?
Excellent work here! Still looking forward to randomly running into you in one of the shops around here lol
If you're in Northern Nevada the chances are probably pretty high. Admittedly though I haven't been to a shop for a few months, it's probably time to re up on some stuff!
Your Avatar of Khaine looks like you painted it with pasta sauce! Eventually we all get better with our painting!
Acetone for metal, Super Clean for everything else.
Adam
The paint is excellent! i didn't catch the name of the paint you used as a basecoat that would prevent the paint from flacking, could you telle me what it was?
and thank you for the video ^^
What kind of Dremmel attachment did you use to clean off the last bits of paint? I've been buying some of the old metal Eldar to paint and join my own old metal Eldar and could use some advice for getting those last stubborn paint patches off.
Looks like a brass brush maybe?
Other commenter, "yalaz", asked same question, he says a soft steel, but he'd prefer soft brass cause the steel is aggressive
Hmm I am very curious as to why don’t you just dip the whole thing into acetone?
Amazing job friend :)
Ulthwe Eldar was my first fully painted army back in 3rd edition. Mine wasn’t any better either.
I'm liking the paint job, but why does it have a windsock on its head?
This was perfect timing.
Oh you angel you... And apparently you didn't even know it 😇. Lovely paint job!
love those protective shades
What gold do you use? It’s very vibrant!
For this guy I used Vallejo Metal Color Gold. It's vibrant, but also has quite a bit of green in it, so it really bounces off the reds here. A great color though and some of the best metallic paint on the market!
Here's to another 25 years dude!
My mother threw away mine when I went to University. Tbf I'd not collected since I was 13...this was 2004.
Got back into the hobby 2 years ago and realised the value of all the models that got thrown away 🙃
got myself some panel liner because if your suggestions! nice video
When I first got back into 40k, I bought an Avatar of Khaine for AUD $35. This was my first encounter with Fine Cast, and almost made me quit again.
What happened to SWM/Misterjustin?
minute 8:51 , what happend with "secret weapon" brand?? Why the "Rest In Peace"?
The pandemic really did a number on them and they had to close. It’s pretty sad, they were a great small company for the hobby.
@@eBayMiniatureRescues NOOOOOOOO!
Amazing work well done
That scorpion be stylin' tho
I'd say Avatar of Khaine deserves the fresh paintjob if for nothing else, to apologize how he is basically fodder throughout the 40k series to show how strong the plot armor is for various characters.
He beats the heck out of the first tiny version.
Which dremel bit do you use to buff pewter models?
The kit I bought came with a pretty soft steel one, it's still a little abrasive if you're not careful. Best bet is to look into brass wire ones that are really soft, specifically for cleaning and polishing. I've had them on a list for a while and just haven't picked them up.
Not a big fan of the light green and gold truth be told.
I'm partial to it, probably because it seems to fit my Eldar from when I started. But, an option I almost went with was to paint all of that stuff white, a little more like that last example pic, that could have been fun too :)
@@eBayMiniatureRescues I could see a darker green but the light just isn't contrasting enough to my eye. All kind of ends up looking the same.
The comparison between your painting then and now was illuminating.
I just bought one of these for £11. I can't get the paint scheme right tho! Stripped and painted him like...6 times!
Great work.
You should just buy another one and paint it instead. I really wish I had my armies from the mid 90s.
So sad I have none of my OG models.
I've still got my Orc and Goblins that I started in 2000 so that's something at least.
Also ... MY GOD THOSE MOULD LINES ON HIS HEAD!
Great video brother. Always an inspiration. Keep up the great work
Mate... for metals, just use Acetone.
Great video!
I saw a Dankhold Troggoth 👀
What happened to secret weapon miniatures? Also love your videos each week!
apparently they closed shop in September due to combination of Brexit and pandemic issues. had going out of business sale and should be done by now.
@@kenwad75 damn that sucks, I really liked their resin bases 😞
Thanks!! Yeah it was sad to hear that Secret Weapon went under. it's been a tough couple of years for so many small businesses, even when they get pretty regular support. I imagine it won't be gone forever, Justin will probably do something with all that experience, let's hope anyways!
3:30 Why is that Eldar breakdancing?
I need to get this mode back from my brother and re-do it myself
I think that Avatar is Pewter. Pewter usually contains lead.
I have this very fig bought many moons ago as a lad in the UK :)
There's a newer version of the avatar I thought. He has the option of holding a sword or a spear or something like that. Maybe I'm mistaken but I swear I remember seeing one like that.
You mean the Forge World one?
I’m kinda disappointed that the ringlight at the beginning is not his Halo:(
Huzzah,, what a journey!
