honestly if sam had 5 cents for every barre chord he's used he would be a multi millionaire. I've been playing guitar for years and I thought it was easy to barre on the classical guitar until i started learning his arrangements. what a gnarly hand workout.
2:37 with the pressing of the top and bottom stings with the barre finger is how i learned to do it for myself. i was always told not to do it that way, but it is the easiest and most comfortable way for me.. that being said, even after 20yrs of playing, barre chords wreck my left hand and after a song that is almost all barre chords, i have to take a couple mins.
There's already a lot of exercises and lessons online about finger picking practice but I'd really like to have your take on it. A lot of learning (and having light bulbs light up/mental switches being flipped) is rooted in communication and the way you explain things resonates with a lot of your viewers. Anyway thanks!
I have a huge notch in my finger that makes barring chords reaaaally tough for me. For the longest time everyone was telling me I needed to build hand strength, and I told them; "I don't really think that's the case because I've been playing bass for 7 years." Turned out they were wrong and I needed how to work around my bony misshapen fingers. True story.
Lol you actually made me realize why i feel like my left hand is about to fall off after a few minutes of playing bar chords. Also not a huge fan of chords like Bb
Question, Sam: I have been playing for 20 years, and can shred pretty well given my condition on a little electric with light gauge strings, but here's my probknob: I have a nerve condition in my left hand that has rendered my thumb literally useless. I cannot contract it at the first knuckle whatsoever, meaning I can use it as a rest, but I cannot use it as a clamp. This makes playing acoustic guitar or doing complex chords almost impossible. I know nothing is impossible, and others with worse conditions have became amazing players, but it is really demoralizing around a campfire when people tell others I'm this great guitar player, and I have to turn down trying because I'm not on a Jackson with a distortion pedal. I want to be able to grip again, but the doctors have told me the muscle will never grow back. What can I try to compensate for the lack of strength?
Hey Sam, what's with the archaic tablature? Took me a while to realise you had the E string at the bottom and not the top, and the E string at the top and not the bottom.
You're right, its old school I think. That's the way I learned to read tabs when I began learning. Its from your view as the Guitarist looking down on your strings I believe.
Great video man! I have been loving your content and thinking of subbing to your patreon. I wanna request a song from Mario Kart 8. Either big blue or the legend of zelda track would be amazing if you were able to do it :) i play guitar also and really want the tabs lol
