- Inspired by StateOfMercury's "What If" series, I decided to take the concept a give it a little twist, mixing the two biggest bands of thrash, Metallica and Megadeth, and starting a What If series that would touch on the topic of discussion many have had: what if Dave Mustaine had never gotten the boot?
What if he'd helped write some of Metallica's biggest hits? How would it sound?
Here's the first taste. Hope you enjoy!

UPDATE ON THIS:
Guys, if it's taking me so long to release this, it's because I've decided to do the full Justice album redone with Mustaine's riffs and solos, and release it all at once. It's a pain in the cock, but the project has not been forgotten or abandoned; it's simply evolving. Bare with me, and apologies.

Imo, Dave (still very young and immature) woulda quit upon realizing that James is the irreplaceable heart and soul of Metallica. Dave, like James, is an Alpha male and he needs to be leading his own band. And that’s not a bad thing.

What do you mean "what if"? It is universal knowledge that Dave Mustaine wrote each and every single album released by Metallica, INCLUDING Lulu. Mustaine is a musical genius.
Jokes aside tho, this sounds pretty spot on. Tone is spot on too, but if Mustaine had been in Metallica around that time the tone would've sounded a little different, you know, while Metallica was scooping the mids, Megadeth was cranking them to 11 haha

Looking forward for the result. Always felt like the "if" series must be done for megadeth or kinda touch it in some way. Maybe you'll make what if "holy wars" was on Peace Sells? You even have demos, where Chris Poland plays solos. Take it as a basis and make into a full PSBWB cover! Good luck anyway
That's a neat idea! Unfortunately somebody else should tackle that, since I've decided to focus solely on trying to figure out how Metallica would've sounded with Mustaine as the lead guitarist. Though I agree, a "what if" series for Megadeth should happen!
That sounds really good man. I'm waiting for the full version. And besides that I'd love to see What If Leper Messiah was on the Black Album. I think that would sound so awesome. The intro could be based on the intro of Sad But True. And slower and heavier main riff.

Imagine if Dave would've still been in the band, Lars would gotten replaced with Dave Lombardo and Cliff never would've died, Imagine what a fucking monster of a band Metallica would've been, much better than they turned out!
So first off, Lars the co founder of Metallica along with James so that’s a big no. Secondly there is a 50/50% that cliff would die just based upon the scenario
Metallica was actually in talks amongst eachother regarding replacing Lars, but then Cliff died and it just never happened. It was best to keep Lars in the long run anyway.

Burton could be in the picture.Imagine this- Burton and kirk never switched places in the bus, we unfortunately lost kirk, and to take his place mustaine returns. This could also explain the audible bass. To live is to die would have to be removed though.
No Newsted, no Blackened. And Blackened is pretty much one of Justice's staples, so I'm keeping Newsted and killing Burton. Plus, with Cliff in the picture, no To Live is To Die/In My Darkest Hour, possibly two of the best metal ballads from 1988

What a fantastic band they'd have become if Lars and James hadn't been so hasty in booting him! Metallica settled for less, and after 1989, the downhill slide accelerated exponentially.
While I do think Kirk is an inferior guitarist compared to Dave, I don't think they went downhill post 1989. If anything, the only low they've reached was in the 2000s
@@Fackunator The Black Album disappointed me so much that I stopped following the band after the touring for it, and what happened with Jason I found inexcusable. Musically, for me, they stopped being Metallica after ...AJFA.
@@ImYourOverlord I won't even try to imagine what it must've been like getting the Black Album following Justice, but I think overall it's still a super groovy record. Don't Tread On Me and The Struggle Within are two underrated gems imo
About Jason, it was a bullshit thing to do, absolutely, and I 100% blame James for what went down. But eh, everybody made amends later
@@Fackunator The Black Album was the first music CD I ever bought. Before then, I was all about vinyl. Got it when it came out, on good faith, as I'd loved everything Metallica had done up to that point. I found the album to be less killer, more filler, and ultimately wished I hadn't bought it. There are some bright spots, yes, but not enough for something I'd want in my collection.

If he had never left Metallica? That’s complicated because Mustaine created a different sound for Megadeth as it made no sense to make an exact copy of his former band. Lots of alternate picking mixed with down picking, numerical rifts. Tallica did mostly down picking with duel harmonies and longer tracks. Both had time signature changes, double bass drumming ect... (Thrash Metal)
I think this track was modified under the educated guess that he still made the same style changes while staying in Metallica.
Yes, but also, no. There are a lot of early Megadeth stuff that sounds very Metallica-y (Wake Up Dead, the groovy riff in The Skull Beneath The Skin, half of So Far, So Good..., Five Magics) and a lot of Metallica early stuff that sounds super Megadeth-y (Fight Fire With Fire, Dyers Eve, Damage Inc, Trapped Under Ice). Dave created Megadeth as to not be Metallica, but if he had stayed, I think his natural crazy style would've fit perfectly with James' groovy, caveman-like riffs.
My take on this project is based on that assumption.

I just edited that word to educated guess. It did get crazier from Peace Sells to Rust in Peace. My guess is that their would have been more Metallica thrash albums. And a side project for Load and Reload (Tool/Perfect Circle) because of all the ideas bouncing off each other.

Imo it would sound better than this. This isnt near as good as the original. With Megadave, there are no lead speed limits and that was basically the goal on Justice or ...A Jason fuck all 😅
