I think Kirk did a lot of great solos that fit those early songs. The Black album has his tastiest solos, IMHO.
I know he gets a lot of hate from Megadeth fans and those idiots who think technical ability is important, but it's not, it's all about note selection and he had very good note selection in the early days .
All the pick sweepers and 10 finger tappers in the world can't hold a candle next to the guitarist who has great note selection.

He's old school and he's proven himself as a sick guitarist. He's at a point where he plays what he feels like playing and not for anyone but himself. Good for him. He sometimes is the only sane one too. Look at skom movie. He was the only chill dude. Lol

He gets hate because he is an average guitarist at best, to anyone who is actually competent on guitar. Great note selection is subjective to the listener, where as competency on an instrument can be definitely measured, and Kirk's competency on guitar is very limited especially live. Kirk's lazy rhythm style with accompanied with James precise picking attack just doesnt cut the mustard.

So there's a guy in the band that is constantly playing his instrument and documenting his work, attempting to provide catalysts for inspiration for everyone else to work with. What a travesty. Even if 90% of his submissions are considered unusable, the fact that he is compulsively working is more than most musicians on the planet can claim - including the other members of Metallica, who famously write music almost exclusively in the studio for the last 30 years. If kirk had another band it would be extremely prolific and that's why James doesn't allow anyone to persue outside projects.
I mean it’s too bad cuz you saw what happened to Dave and Jason.. does seem a bit fishy Kirk and Jason wrote some cool stuff too actually. Those two should start a band! MegaCastoffs

I have so many 4am shitfaced recordings in my phone of me noodling on an acoustic guitar aimlessly because I thought I was on to something big so I wanted to record it to remember it. Man I love how pressed some people can get over Metallica nowadays. Like Jesus guys, people can be happy about a band even if they aren’t the epitome of technicality anymore. Like they have more then proved themselves in the past, and if they’re happy about touring and making music for the hell of it, then why should you shame them for not living up to your standards of musicality?
They are old, tired, and have been doing constant touring for years and years. Sure they have changed, had awful moments in their career, and may not be the “best” anymore, but they are metal giants for a reason. I believe all their albums have golden moments on them, and even though their newer albums aren’t the OG 5, it’s still Metallica. I think it’s great they can laugh at themselves more than ever nowadays, and admit their flaws. No matter what, I will always thank these guys for making great music through my childhood 😌
(Remember if you don’t like them. That’s completely fair! I just think people can be vicious sometimes. Music is music. It’s meant to be fun! Enjoy yourselves guys!)
