Bit of a late reaction, but I once read a story about a guy that was obsessed with mirrors and at some point he created a spherical mirror. He, infact, did go insane. Or he died, I can't quite remember. It's been a while since I read it. It's a short story by Edogawa Ranpo, if you're interested.

BlackSH0veldeath think of it this way... If you look at a mirror 2 feet away from it and outline yourself, then go 50 feet away and outline yourself, your outline would be the same. You just need really long arms to make it possible but the reasoning behind it is perspective. You never really change size in a mirror since your eyes are what determine the size of the figure in the mirror. Instead, you’re looking at yourself at the exact same size, looking into a mirror that’s the exact same size, just at different distances.
Another way of thinking of it is that, if you do the same test and have someone else highlight you and that person is 2 feet away while you stand 50 feet away, the highlight won’t match. It will actually be much smaller since his eyes are seeing you at a different area.
It’s hard to explain but the one takeaway you should grab from it is that it doesn’t really matter. It’s honestly just a fun fact rather than anything helpful for the average viewer.
Another fun fact though is that, if you look good in a mirror, you look good in person (or at least you’re your type). Looking bad in a mirror though means your ugly (or at least you’re not your type). So next time you look at a picture your friends took and they say it’s fine, then it’s probably fine.
Also i dont think it works from just looking at the mirror you have to trace your phone the way you see it on the camera and then step back and look threw the camera

If you take an object, and make it an infinitely long pillar towards the mirror that keeps the same width, will it magically get smaller when it's further away? No. Perspective is an illusion. It's not easy to explain, but it makes perfect sense. It doesnt get smaller further away, it just seems to. Thats why if you look at it in a mirror, it doesnt ever, ever get smaller.

I read a fantasy book once where the final step of a magician's training was to build and seal a completely spherical mirror with themselves inside it. This opened their third eye and allowed them to use magic. The trick was, they had to work fast for the last bit because the mirror was airtight. Something about the infinite total blackness of a completely sealed spherical mirror, and that imagery through the naked eye was a mental shock to the character. I guess I've always wanted to try it, just for kicks.

i went to a science exhibition with my friends and there was an actual spherical mirror.... well, it was a semi circle in a wall, from afar it looks alot less deep than it really was, when you put your hand in it, your hand would keep going further than you expect and that itself can be really strange, its until you stick your head into it. first it looks strange and you can hardly tell what is in it, then you can see your face flipped upside down, then your face fills up your entire field of view really suddenly which actually scared me at first because im so ugly XD, and when you go deeper it only takes up more space until you inevitably bonk your nose into the back of the mirror making yourself look like a fool

Well technically light is not instant so the light would be travelling through the mirrors as they become more minuscule till the end of time but that’s only possible if the mirrors stay clean enough to let the light through and if the mirrors actually survive that long. Obviously that would be impossible but the light would still travel and reflect a colossal amount of times. Another thing is that if the mirrors actually stay big enough and not reduce to below atom size. 🤯

If we put a gigantic mirror 10 light years away and look at it through a huge telescope, would be able to hypothetically see 20 years into the past?
The thing is it would take 10 years, at the speed of light to get the mirror there, then 10 years for the first reflection to get back.
You'll never be able to go back in time but after you put the mirror there yes it'll be very useful.

The explanation of why mirrors "reverse left-to-right" is utter nonsense. Mirrors do no such thing, and the left-right axis is just as parallel to the mirror as the up-down axis. In fact, what is happening is that the mirror is reflecting front-to-back, as one would expect. However, when we see the reflected image of ourselves, we don't imagine it as our face being pulled through the back of our head. Instead, we imagine a person rotated around 180 degrees. Since left and right are described relative to the direction we are facing, we imagine "that person's" left and right as being opposite our own.
Let me put it another way. Imagine I am facing north and looking into a mirror, with my left hand facing west and my right hand facing east, with a ring on my left hand. My reflection in the mirror also has a ring on the hand on the west side. That hasn't changed. However, since the reflection is now facing the opposite direction, we say it is the reflection's "right hand," even though that is still on our left.
Although we don't often think about it this way, we could just as easily say that mirrors "reverse up and down" rather than left and right, in the following sense: Instead of imagining the reflection to be a person rotated 180 degrees standing on the floor, imagine it flipping 180 degrees head-over-heels. Now instead of the ring seemingly being on the right hand instead of the left hand, we have the head seemingly being on the bottom half of the body instead of the top half of the body. Clearly the mirror has reversed up and down! But you can ask someone this, draw a dot on one of your cheeks, if I draw a dot on the (my) right, a person would see the dot on my left, if I look in the mirror, I will see the dot on my right cheek. So if someone sees a dot on my left cheek, I would see it on my right.Then again "my right" is the same "right" on the mirror.

If you have a page facing you, then rotate the page around the vertical axis, and then mirror it left to right, it will appear the same as looking at it from the back. However if you rotate it around its horizontal axis (i.e. left to right, in the plane of the page), you then need to mirror it top to bottom to make it look like the back.
What happens when you look at someone in the mirror is your mind rotating them to be facing towards you, rather than having their back facing you. This creates the illusion that you are mirroring left and right, when in reality you mirror front and back.
Nice and simple, look at yourself in a mirror. Hold up your left hand. Is your hand still to your left? Yes. If you treated your reflection as a person then it would be to their right, but it is to your left.
Now look at yourself holding up your left hand in a webcam image/photo.
The hand that is up is now to your right, and to the left of the person in the image. That is what you would see in a mirror if you actually flipped left and right, such as what happens with a mirror that looks like a U from above (when looking from the direction of the top of the U).

You say your left hand is still your left hand, but its not the mirrors left hand is it? its just the hand that happens to be on your left. So lets assume for a second its NOT flipped, and i flipped it; you would still see a hand on the left side and claim it as your left hand when its not. the image has infact been flipped.
Take the image from the mirror and compare it to what someone see when they look at you, its completly different.

It is nice and simple, a mirror reflects through the plane, not in it. That means front to back, not left to right or up and down.
Yes, take an image of what people see in the mirror compared to what people see when they look at you. When they look directly at you instead of the mirror they see your back. When looking in the mirror they see your front. You have been flipped front to back. The only way to avoid that is to rotate yourself as well. Mirrors don't rotate.
And yes, it is your left hand.
As for how it is flipped front to back, that is quite simple, things that are further forward (and closer to the mirror) appear further backwards (and closer to the mirror surface).
Take a tetrahedron pointing towards the mirror. When it is flipped front to back, it is still pointing towards the mirror.
Even better, take a clear sheet of plastic and write on it. Look at what it looks like in the mirror, with the front facing towards the mirror and look at what it looks like from the back, you will find they match.
Stop thinking about a 3D world in 2D.
